Remember • Operant conditioning extinction differs from classical conditioning extinction • Responds decreases to near zero for both • Operant conditioning: - Transient increase - Extinction induced aggression Partial Reinforcement Extinction Effect: PREE • Extinction occurs at different rates depending on the schedule: - Continuous reinforcement: FAST extinction - Partial reinforcement schedules: SLOWER extinction - Variable schedules show slower extinction than fixed (rate or time) schedules. • PREE used to describe greater persistence in instrumental responding during extinction after partial (or intermittent) reinforcement training - Faster extinction after continuous reinforcement training. • Partial reinforcement schedules show RESISTANCE TO EXTINCTION Other Extinction Effects • magnitude reinforcement extinction effect - Less persistence of instrumental behavior in extinction following training with a large reinforcer - More persistance of responding with a small or moderate ...
Abstract: In behavioral pharmacology, overall response rate is the measure most often used to study the effects of drugs on an animals ongoing operant behavior. However, it has been argued that an overall measure of response rate may not provide the most valid description of behavior and, thus, a more detailed analysis might prove beneficial in classifying drug effects. The purpose of the present research was to (1) study effects of methamphetamine on schedulecontrolled responding, (2) determine if a log-survivor analysis recently used to study nose-poke responding in rats could be extended for use with key-pecking in pigeons and (3) examine microproperties of pigeon responding using an IRT analysis. Pigeons were trained to peck a lighted key under a multiple random-interval (RI) 1-min, RI 4-min schedule. Interresponse times (IRTs) were collected and then analyzed via log-survivor plots and an analysis described by Blough (1963) and used in greater detail by Palya (1992). Log-survivor plots ...
TY - JOUR. T1 - Self-administration of cocaine increases the release of acetylcholine to a greater extent than response-independent cocaine in the nucleus accumbens of rats. AU - Mark, Gregory. AU - Hajnal, Andras. AU - Kinney, Anthony E.. AU - Keys, Alan S.. PY - 1999. Y1 - 1999. N2 - Rationale: The neurochemical effects of psychostimulant exposure may depend on how these drugs are encountered. A useful method for examining this issue is to compare neurotransmitter release following response-dependent, or self-administered, drug exposure and response-independent exposure. Objectives: This experiment examined the effect of active and passive cocaine administration on acetylcholine (ACh) efflux in the shell region of the nucleus accumbens (NAc) in rats. Methods: One group of rats (CSA: cocaine self-administration) was trained to lever-press for intravenous infusions of cocaine (0.42 mg/kg per infusion) on a fixed-ratio-1 schedule of reinforcement. Cocaine infusions were accompanied by the onset ...
The psychology term superimposed schedules of reinforcement refers to a structure of rewards where two or more simple schedules of reinforcement operate simultaneously. Reinforcers can be positive, negative, or both. An example is a person who comes home after a long day at work. The behavior of opening the front door is rewarded by a big kiss on the lips by the persons spouse and a rip in the pants from the family dog jumping enthusiastically. Another example of superimposed schedules of reinforcement is a pigeon in an experimental cage pecking at a button. The pecks deliver a hopper of grain every 20th peck, and access to water after every 200 pecks.. Superimposed schedules of reinforcement are a type of compound schedule that evolved from the initial work on simple schedules of reinforcement by B.F. Skinner and his colleagues (Skinner and Ferster, 1957). They demonstrated that reinforcers could be delivered on schedules, and further that organisms behaved differently under different ...
Lever pressing for food on a variable interval (2.5 min) schedule was challenged by pretreatment with a 1.0 mg/kg dose of the dopamine receptor blocker pimozide. Now lets combine these four terms. A fixed interval reinforcement schedule is when behavior is rewarded after a set amount of time. For example, June undergoes major surgery in a hospital. During recovery, she is expected to experience pain and will require prescription medications for pain relief. June is given an IV drip with a patient-controlled painkiller. Her doctor sets a limit: one dose per hour. June pushes a button when pain becomes difficult, and she receives a dose of medication. Since the reward (pain relief) only occurs on a fixed interval, there is no point in exhibiting the behavior when it will not be rewarded.. With a variable interval reinforcement schedule, the person or animal gets the reinforcement based on varying amounts of time, which are unpredictable. Say that Manuel is the manager at a fast-food restaurant. Every once in a while someone from the quality control division comes to Manuels restaurant. If the restaurant is clean and the service is fast, everyone on that ...
Drug effects on operant behavior are often characterized by their effects on rate of responding, usually expressed as the number of responses per unit of time. The time between two consecutive responses constitutes an interresponse time (IRT), and this measure has been used also to characterize the effects of drugs on operant behavior. IRTs which occur during a session can be classified on a statistical basis as: 1) short-IRT, an IRT(s) of short duratio generated by high-frequency responses; 2) pause, an IRT of long duratio generated by low-frequency responses; and 3) post-reinforcement pause, an IRT which immediately follows reinforcement. This investigation used three schedules of water reinforcement (fixed-ratio 20, fixed-interval 90-seconds and variable-interval 20-seconds) to examine how these IRT classes are influenced by changes in water deprivation conditions or amphetamine administration. Base-line IRT distributions depended upon the schedule of reinforcement. Changes induced by doses ...
After training under a fixed-interval 60 sec schedule of food presentation in the presence of a water tube (to permit schedule-induced licking), groups of rats received either 6-hydroxy-dopamine (6-OHDA)(8 micrograms base/2 microliters) or 0.2% ascorbate-0.9% saline vehicle bilaterally into the nucleus accumbens. 6-OHDA produced greater than 80% depletion of the catecholamines dopamine and norepinephrine and the dopamine metabolite dihydroxyphenylacetic acid in the nucleus accumbens and olfactory tubercle, but nonsignificant depletions in the corpus striatum. The behavior of the groups treated with 6-OHDA (lesion) and vehicle (sham) was assessed for up to 58 days postoperatively. In the first few days after 6-OHDA, the lesion group showed reductions in high rates of responding toward the end and in high rates of licking at the beginning of the fixed-interval. However, licking was increased during later portions of the fixed interval in the lesion group. d-Amphetamine (0.25-2.0 mg/kg) ...

We explore the implications of these compounding selection pressures on food-seeking motivation during breeding, as well as the hormonal underpinnings of these behaviors ...
Abstract: The effects of extinction have been demonstrated in community dwelling older adults (Plaud, Plaud, & Duvillard, 1999), but to date, the effects of extinction have not been empirically demonstrated for older adults with neurocognitive disorder. Therefore, the purpose of the study was to examine whether withdrawal of a reinforcer from a previously reinforced behavior would result in behavior change for this population. Preferred stimuli (pictures) were identified prior to implementation through use of a preference assessment followed by reinforcer assessment. The effects of the schedules were assessed with a computer program on a tablet PC. Conditions were signaled by the presentation of various shapes along with the buttons. The effects of reinforcement were compared with extinction and/or non-contingent reinforcement schedules. The experimental arrangement consisted of a presentation of two buttons that (a) would activate a preferred picture; (b) produce nothing (in the extinction ...

The walls, which are subjected to static (monotonic and cyclic) and dynamic (seismic excitation) loading, have the same geometry and vertical reinforcement details but differ in the horizontal reinforcement arrangement, the latter designed either in compliance with the earthquake-resistant design clauses of current codes or in accordance with the method of the compressive force path. The results obtained indicate that adopting the latter method yields significantly more efficient design solutions without ompromising the code performance ...

Most concrete used for construction is a combination of concrete and reinforcement that is called reinforced concrete. Reinforcement for concrete is provided by embedding deformed steel bars or welded wire fabric within freshly made concrete at the time of casting. The purpose of reinforcement is to provide additional strength for concrete where it is needed. The steel provides all the tensile strength where concrete is in tension, as in beams and slabs; it supplements the compressive strength of concrete in columns and walls; and it provides extra shear strength over and above that of concrete in beams.

The game adds reinforcements to the timeline and new opponents are always mixed with the remaining enemies. This is very important. You have to be aware that new enemies will be able to make their first moves very early, not in the next turn. Always be ready for it and dont set your agents up in the open when you retreat.. Reinforcements can appear multiple times during the same battle. Defeating new enemies can, of course, allow you to gain more XP. However, each successive turn increases the risk of your agents receiving serious injuries. Our advice is to focus on the back and attack only those opponents who get in the way of the team.. ...

Neural hypo-sensitivity to cues predicting positive reinforcement has been observed in ADHD using the Monetary Incentive Delay (MID) task. Here we report the first study using an electrophysiological analogue of this task to distinguish between (i) cue related anticipation of reinforcement and downstream effects on (ii) target engagement and (iii) performance in a clinical sample of adolescents with ADHD and controls. Thirty-one controls and 32 adolescents with ADHD aged 10-16 years performed the electrophysiological (e)-MID task - in which preparatory cues signal whether a response to an upcoming target will be reinforced or not - under three conditions; positive reinforcement, negative reinforcement (response cost) and no consequence (neutral). We extracted values for both cue-related potentials known to be, both, associated with response preparation and modulated by reinforcement (Cue P3 and Cue CNV) and target-related potentials (target P3) and compared these between ADHD and controls. Both the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) and mesolimbic dopamine, particularly in the nucleus accumbens (NAc), have been implicated in allowing an animal to overcome effort constraints to obtain greater benefits. However, their exact contribution to such decisions has, to date, never been directly compared. To investigate this issue we tested rats on an operant effort-related cost-benefit decision-making task where animals selected between two response alternatives, one of which involved investing effort by lever pressing on a high fixed-ratio (FR) schedule to gain high reward [four food pellets (HR)], whereas the other led to a small amount of food on an FR schedule entailing less energetic cost [two food pellets, low reward (LR)]. All animals initially preferred to put in work to gain the HR. Systemic administration of a D2 antagonist caused a significant switch in choices towards the LR option. Similarly, post-operatively, excitotoxic ACC lesions caused a significant bias away from HR choices

Reinforcement learning is the process by which individuals alter their decisions to maximize positive outcomes, and minimize negative outcomes. It is a cognitive process that is widely used in our daily lives and is often disrupted during psychiatric disease. Thus, a major goal of neuroscience is to characterize the neural underpinnings of reinforcement learning. Whereas animal studies have utilized invasive physiological methods to characterize several neural mechanisms that underlie reinforcement learning, human studies have largely relied on non-invasive techniques that have reduced physiological precision. Although ethical limitations preclude the use of invasive physiological methods in healthy human populations, patient populations undergoing certain neurosurgical interventions offer a rare opportunity to directly assay neural activity from the brain during human reinforcement learning. This dissertation presents early findings from this research effort.
Discrete trial training (DTT; also called discrete trial instruction or DTI) is a technique used by practitioners of applied behavior analysis (ABA) that was developed by Ivar Lovaas at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). DTT is a practitioner-led, structured instructional procedure that breaks tasks down into simple subunits to shape new skills. Often employed up to 6-7 hours per day for children with autism, the technique relies on the use of prompts, modeling, and positive reinforcement strategies to facilitate the childs learning. It is also noted for its previous use of aversives to punish unwanted behaviors. Lovaas spent most of his career conducting groundbreaking research on the use of this methodology to teach autistic children. As of 2005, two studies have shown that approximately 89.5% of children with autism under the age of 5 who received structured early intensive behavioral intervention (EIBI), or 35-40 hours per week of DTT, had gained significant language, ...
CiteSeerX - Document Details (Isaac Councill, Lee Giles, Pradeep Teregowda): This paper surveys the field of reinforcement learning from a computer-science perspective. It is written to be accessible to researchers familiar with machine learning. Both the historical basis of the field and a broad selection of current work are summarized. Reinforcement learning is the problem faced by an agent that learns behavior through trial-and-error interactions with a dynamic environment. The work described here has a resemblance to work in psychology, but differs considerably in the details and in the use of the word reinforcement. The paper discusses central issues of reinforcement learning, including trading off exploration and exploitation, establishing the foundations of the field via Markov decision theory, learning from delayed reinforcement, constructing empirical models to accelerate learning, making use of generalization and hierarchy, and coping with hidden state. It concludes with a survey of some
A wood structural member of the present invention, such as a laminated wood beam, a wood I-beam, or a truss, includes multiple wood segments and plural multiple-fiber synthetic reinforcements. Each of plural reinforcements includes multiple strands of different types of synthetic fibers that are maintained in position by a resin encasement. The surface of a reinforcement to which a wood segment is bonded is adapted so that the reinforcement may be bonded to the structural member with nonepoxy adhesives, such as resorcinol, commonly used in the laminated beam industry.
Proponents of positive reinforcement swear by the effectiveness of their techniques, and it is true that the vast majority of dogs respond well to these training methods.. One reason that positive reinforcement training is so effective is that is uses rewards to teach the dog what is expected of it. When the dog performs the desired behavior, he is provided with a reward, most often in the form of a food treat, but it could be a scratch behind the ears, a rub under the chin or a pat on the head as well. The important thing is that the dog is rewarded consistently for doing the right thing.. Reward training has become increasingly popular in recent years, but chances are some sort of reward training between humans and dogs has been going on for hundreds if not thousands of years.. When understanding what makes reward training so effective, some knowledge of the history of humans and dogs is very helpful. The earliest dogs were probably wolf pups that were tamed and used by early humans for ...
Abstract: This research suggests that coordinated response allocation under concurrent variable interval schedules of reinforcement can be partially described by The Generalised Matching Law (Baum, 1974) in a similar way to the responses of individual humans and non-human animals responding alone are. The Generalised Matching Law (GML) describes how choice or behavioral allocation is effected by variables such as the amount, duration or value of reinforcement delivered contingent on a behaviour. Much of the research in this area has focused on responding where reinforcement delivery is contingent solely on the behaviour of an individual organism (for a review see Michael, 1988). There are, however, many natural situations where distribution of responses is contingent on the coordinated behaviours of two or more organisms, rather than the sum of an organisms individual responses. Coordinated behaviour can be defined as the behaviour of two or more organisms occurring in a specific order, ...

The study of perceptual decisions has been developed as a substitute for investigating more complex multiple attribute decisions. However, little attention has been paid to the similarity of results between the two literatures. Four separate behavioral experiments and a secondary trial- by-trial analysis investigated the sensitivity of perceptual decisions. Results were compared to both previous perceptual decision research and that of multiple attribute decisions in an effort to bridge the divide. The first experiment examined the effect of increasing the similarity of available response alternatives on accuracy and reaction time. The results suggest that high levels of similarity can begin to degrade the decision process by lowering accuracy and slowing reaction time; however these changes may be dependent on the extent to which the alternatives use overlapping neuronal pools. The second experiment examined the effect of increasing the number of response alternatives available for a single ...
In the absence of response-reinforcer delays, AcbC-lesioned rats acquired an instrumental response normally, responding even more than sham-operated controls. In contrast, blockade of N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) glutamate receptors in the AcbC has been shown to retard instrumental learning for food under a variable-ratio-2 (VR-2) schedule [in which P(reinforcer , response) ≅ 0.5] [40], as has inhibition or over-stimulation of cyclic-adenosine-monophosphate-dependent protein kinase (protein kinase A; PKA) within the Acb [41]. Concurrent blockade of NMDA and DA D1 receptors in the AcbC synergistically prevents learning of a VR-2 schedule [42]. Once the response has been learned, subsequent performance on this schedule is not impaired by NMDA receptor blockade within the AcbC [40]. Furthermore, infusion of a PKA inhibitor [41] or a protein synthesis inhibitor [43] into the AcbC after instrumental training sessions impairs subsequent performance, implying that PKA activity and protein synthesis in ...

Negative reinforcement can be enhanced with positive reinforcment. 1. The pressure is applied such as a pulling on the rein. 2. The horse responds by turning and the pressure is immediately released (this release is the reinforcement, but since pressure was first applied, the pressure has to be removed, which is a taking away, a negative act, thus the term negative reinforcement; how all horses are trained). 3. Once the pressure is released, or as the pressure is released, the horse can be rewarded with rubbing or verbal praise, which is using the addition of positive reinforcement to train. Once the horse has responded to the pressure or cue, and the pressure is released, another something can be added to enhance the behavior, to increase the likelihood of the behavior repeating itself. This end act of reward, if utilized, is termed positive reinforcement. The release preceding the rub, however remains negative reinforcement. For those of you who are interested in understanding the principles ...
A modular segmented structural reinforcement system for use with closed forms or cavities defined with automotive vehicles having a plurality of modular segments designed to be secured within a defined portion of an automotive vehicle applications. An expandable or bonding material, such as an epoxy-based reinforcing foam or other sound absorption, damping, vibration reduction, or sealing material is disposed on at least a portion of the outer surface of each of the plurality of segments. Once the system is flexible fitted within the closed form or placed within a selected cavity of an automotive vehicle, the material expands and cures during an automobile assembly operation, bonding the reinforcement system to the segments. As a result, the reinforcement system provides enhanced load distribution over the vehicle frame without adding excessive weight and further serves to reduce noise and vibrational characteristics of the automotive vehicle.
A modular acetabular reinforcement system includes a substantially cup-shaped reinforcement body having a peripheral flange portion. One or more fixation wings, of various sizes and shapes, are selectively and separately attachable to the flange portion of the reinforcement body. The system is mountable within the acetabulum of a patient to reinforce the acetabulum and to serve as a platform for other prosthesis components such as an acetabular shell.

One of the most influential interval timing paradigms assumes a pacemaker-accumulator clock (pacemaker-counter) and was introduced by Treisman [15]. According to Treisman [15], the interval timing mechanism that links internal clock to external behaviour also requires some kind of store of reference times and some comparison mechanism for time judgement. The model was rediscovered two decades later and became the scalar expectancy theory (SET) [5,16]. SET also assumes that interval timing emerges from the interaction of three abstract blocks: clock, accumulator (working or short-term memory) and comparator. The clock stage is a Poisson process whose pulses are accumulated in the working memory until the occurrence of an important event, such as reinforcement. At the time of the reinforcement, the number of clock pulses accumulated is transferred from the working (short-term) memory and stored in a reference (or long-term) memory. According to the SET, a response is produced by computing the ...
Rationale: Previous research has shown that rats exposed perinatally to phencyclidine (PCP) exhibited neuroanatomical abnormalities and altered cognition. In addition to cognitive deficits, schizophrenic patients may also exhibit negative symptoms such as lack of motivation. Objectives: In this study, we used a progressive ratio ( PR) schedule of food reinforcement to assess motivation following early exposure to PCP. Methods: Male rat pups were injected SC with 10 mg/kg PCP on postnatal days (PN) 7, 9, and 11. On PN 120, they began training in a PR 5 schedule of food reinforcement.
Reinforcement learning (RL) is the study of systems that learn from interaction with their environment. The current framework of Reinforcement Learning is based on receiving scalar rewards, which the agent aims to maximize. But in many real world situations, tradeoffs must be made among multiple objectives. This necessitates the use of vector representation of values and rewards and the use of weights to represent the importance of different objectives. In this thesis, we consider the problem of learning in the presence of time-varying preferences among multiple objectives. Learning a new policy for every possible weight vector is wasteful. Instead we propose a method that allows us store a finite number of policies, choose an appropriate policy for any weight vector and improve upon it. The idea is that though there can be infinitely many weight vectors, a lot of them will have the same optimal policy. We prove this empirically in two domains: a version of the Buridans ass problem and network ...

However, it is important to learn policies using images as input for real-world robots, not for simulations. Therefore, in this article, we introduce a method called offline model-based policy optimization (LOMPO) that can learn policies even when images are used as input.
PyData Amsterdam 2017. In this talk Id like to give practical introduction into deep reinforcement learning methods, used to solve complex control problems in robotics, play Atari games, self-driving car control and lots more.. Deep Reinforcement Learning is a very hot topic, successfully applied in lots of areas which require planning of actions in complex, noisy and partially-observed environments. Concrete examples vary from playing arcade games, navigating websites, helicopter, quadrocopter and car control, protein folding and lots of others.. Surprisingly, during my own delving into this wide topic, Ive discovered that (with rare exceptions) there is a lack of concrete, understandable explanation of most successful and useful algorithms and methods, such as Deep Q-Networks (DQN), Policy Gradients (PG) and Asynchronous Advantage Actor-Critic (A3C). The situation is even worse with simple code examples of the above methods.. On the one side, there are lots of scientific papers on arxiv.org ...

CiteSeerX - Document Details (Isaac Councill, Lee Giles, Pradeep Teregowda): We propose a reconfigurable fault-tolerant deflection routing algorithm (FTDR) based on reinforcement learning for NoC. The algorithm reconfigures the routing table through a kind of reinforcement learning-Q-learning using 2-hop fault information. It is topology-agnostic and insensitive to the shape of the fault region. In order to reduce the routing table size, we also propose a hierarchical Q-learning based deflection routing algorithm (FTDR-H) with area reduction up to 27 % for a switch in an 8 × 8 mesh compared to the original FTDR. Experimental results show that in the presence of faults, FTDR and FTDR-H are better than other fault-tolerant deflection routing algorithms and a turn model based fault-tolerant routing algorithm.

Advocate honesty: When a child feels comfortable to openly admit that they are struggling with a task, they are more likely to request support before they feel angered and frustrated at their inability to independently complete the task. This will give us a natural and genuine opportunity to appreciate their efforts to this point and highlight their strengths. After this injection of positive reinforcement, we can continue to encourage and motivate the individuals at an appropriate level. Encourage effort. Its important to be reminded that every individual in this world struggles with something, and often struggle with lots of things! By reminding children with special needs that they are not necessarily struggling as a result of their disability, but rather because it is part of the learning process, we begin to normalize their difficulties. This can be a particularly supportive strategy to use to encourage individuals who are discouraged by their slower rate of learning. By breaking tasks ...
Purpose: This phase I study evaluated the safety, tolerability, pharmacokinetics, and preliminary efficacy of the combination of decitabine with vorinostat.. Patients and Methods: Patients with advanced solid tumors or non-Hodgkins lymphomas were eligible. Sequential and concurrent schedules were studied.. Results: Forty-three patients were studied in 9 different dose levels (6 sequential and 3 concurrent). The maximum tolerated dose (MTD) on the sequential schedule was decitabine 10 mg/m2/day on days 1 to 5 and vorinostat 200 mg three times a day on days 6 to 12. The MTD on the concurrent schedule was decitabine 10 mg/m2/day on days 1 to 5 with vorinostat 200 mg twice a day on days 3 to 9. However, the sequential schedule of decitabine 10 mg/m2/day on days 1 to 5 and vorinostat 200 mg twice a day on days 6 to 12 was more deliverable than both MTDs with fewer delays on repeated dosing and it represents the recommended phase II (RP2D) dose of this combination. Dose-limiting toxicities during the ...
The GABAA receptor mediates fast, inhibitory signaling, and cortical expression of the α1 subunit increases during postnatal development. Certain pathological stimuli such as stressors or prenatal cocaine exposure can interfere with this process, but causal relationships between GABAA α1 deficiency and complex behavioral outcomes remain unconfirmed. We chronically reduced GABAA α1 expression selectively in the medial prefrontal cortex (prelimbic subregion) of mice using viral-mediated gene silencing of Gabra1. Adolescent-onset Gabra1 knockdown delayed the acquisition of a cocaine-reinforced instrumental response but spared cocaine seeking in extinction and in a cue-induced reinstatement procedure. To determine whether response acquisition deficits could be associated with impairments in action-outcome associative learning and memory, we next assessed behavioral sensitivity to instrumental contingency degradation. In this case, the predictive relationship between familiar actions and their ...

In this paper, we aim to develop a simple and scalable reinforcement learning algorithm that uses standard supervised learning methods as subroutines. Our goal is an algorithm that utilizes only simple and convergent maximum likelihood loss functions, while also being able to leverage off-policy data. Our proposed approach, which we refer to as advantage-weighted regression (AWR), consists of two standard supervised learning steps: one to regress onto target values for a value function, and another to regress onto weighted target actions for the policy. The method is simple and general, can accommodate continuous and discrete actions, and can be implemented in just a few lines of code on top of standard supervised learning methods. We provide a theoretical motivation for AWR and analyze its properties when incorporating off-policy data from experience replay. We evaluate AWR on a suite of standard OpenAI Gym benchmark tasks, and show that it achieves competitive performance compared to a number ...

When information processing is costly, Herrnsteins matching and a similar simplifying paradox discovered by Allais may be efficient for agents averse to the risk of making errors. Such simplification is likely to be an evolutionarily stable strategy. Differential aversion to errors can lead to different estimates, even without differences in estimating ability.
