Youth with autism were more likely to receive services that involve direct engagement in finding a job than other disability groups, including job-placement and job-search services, and services that involve workplace supports. Receipt of these services also had a significant positive relationship to achieving an employment outcome. These findings are consistent with the underlying philosophy of rapid placement and supports inherent in Supported Employment and Individual Placement and Support models of service delivery. The data also suggest that youth with autism may move into job search and job placement services more rapidly when compared to other groups.. The more general services of assessment and rehabilitation counseling and guidance are the services most frequently received. The high percentage of youth receiving these services may be a reflection of which services VR provides first after an individuals Individualized Plan for Employment (IPE) is completed. The VR service flow would, ...
OBJECTIVE A vocational rehabilitation program (occupational therapy and supported employment) for promoting the return to the community of long-stay persons with schizophrenia was established at a psychiatric hospital in Japan. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the program in terms of hospitalization rates, community tenure, and social functioning with each individual serving as his or her control. METHODS Fifty-two participants, averaging 8.9 years of hospitalization, participated in the vocational rehabilitation program consisting of 2 to 6 hours of in-hospital occupational therapy for 6 days per week and a post-discharge supported employment component. Seventeen years after the program was established, a retrospective study was conducted to evaluate the impact of the program on hospitalizations, community tenure, and social functioning after participants discharge from hospital, using an interrupted time-series analysis. The postdischarge period was compared with the period from onset of
WATZKE, Stefan y GALVAO, Anja. The feasibility of vocational rehabilitation in subjects with severe mental illness. Salud pública Méx [online]. 2008, vol.50, suppl.2, pp.s260-s272. ISSN 0036-3634.. Vocational rehabilitation represents an important element within the mental health care system. To ensure the success of rehabilitation, programs of varying degrees of complexity are needed in order to meet patients abilities and needs. Rehabilitation success must be examined multidimensionally and not be reduced to the mere integration into competitive employment. Success is also represented by progress in the level of vocational integration, strengthening of work capabilities, the improvement of the functional level, and in a better quality of life. The patient s need for rehabilitation has to be recognized as early as possible to shorten the duration of the patient s disintegration and to avoid stagnation periods. Rehabilitation needs to start in the clinic; with psychiatric help sustained during ...
The Public Rehabilitation Program in America can trace its roots back to World War I.. During that war, modern medicine allowed more injured soldiers to survive and come home with significant disabilities than ever before.. But they couldnt go back to their old jobs.. The Soldiers Rehabilitation Act of 1918 introduced a new concept in disability support - not just money to live on, but training for the injured veterans as preparation for new jobs matching their "new" abilities.. A farmer who lost a leg fighting in France might be trained in drafting.. A factory worker with lungs burned by chlorine gas might become a pharmacist.. This idea was popular with the American people and matched programs in several states for training injured workers.. In 1920 Congress expanded the veterans program to include anyone with a physical disability, not just veterans.. This was the beginning of the Public Vocational Rehabilitation Program, or VR.. The new program was great - as long as your physical ...
ABSTRACT: OBJECTIVE: While there are now effective interventions for the symptoms of psychosis and schizophrenia, treatment for the functional domains of these illnesses has received less attention. A key area affected by psychotic illness is vocational functioning. This area is currently of interest to clinicians, policy-makers, politicians and patients. This paper reviews several forms of vocational intervention practiced over the years and highlights the issues around adopting an early intervention approach towards vocational rehabilitation. The paper has four aims: (1) to consider some of the consequences of unemployment for those with psychotic illnesses; (2) to review methods that have been used to address unemployment among the mentally ill; (3) to highlight the importance of vocational development at a developmentally appropriate life stage; and (4) to consider the application of evidence-based vocational rehabilitation to those with first-episode psychosis. METHOD: An initial broad ...

Most people with intellectual or developmental disabilities aspire to gainful employment. To assist them with this goal, state Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) agencies offer employment-development services that are based upon Individualized Plans for Employment (IPEs). A commonly used measure of outcomes is the rehabilitation rate, which is defined as the percentage of individuals who achieve employment out of all individuals whose cases were closed after receiving services. This indicator, however, neglects to consider that for various reasons not all individuals progress to receive services. This information is important because not receiving services translates directly into exiting the VR program without an employment outcome. This Data Note explores how many individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities progressed from application to eligibility to IPE development and services, and how this figure varied across states. Based on RSA-911 data from fiscal year 2008, we found that ...
The goal of Think College at the Institute for Community Inclusion at the University of Massachusetts Boston is to support the creation of authentic, inclusive college experiences that lead not only to academic and social growth, but also integrated competitive employment outcomes for youth with intellectual disability. Students with intellectual disability who go to college are 26% more likely to leave vocational rehabilitation services with a paid job and earn a 73% higher weekly income. There are now over 260 colleges and universities that have opened their doors to students with intellectual disability.. As more students with intellectual disability express their desire to go continue their education, more colleges respond by creating opportunities for learning. Teachers need to learn about these opportunities so that they curb the low expectations that are too often placed upon children with intellectual disability. Families need to know about these options so that they can make help ...

Some researchers think that people with a severe mental illness - such as schizophrenia - who are optimistic are more likely to find means to redefine themselves, to accept their condition, to overcome stigmatising beliefs and to actively function in the community. Others think that optimism means that people are in denial about their illness and that it is not necessarily a good thing. But what makes some people with a severe mental illness more optimistic than others? Researchers from the University of Montreal looked at information from two studies. One was of 150 patients with early psychosis and the second was of 143 people with severe mental illness engaged in a vocational rehabilitation service. They found that in the first sample increased optimism could be explained by higher self-esteem, a higher capacity for leisure activities, low depression and less belief that ones problems constituted an illness. In the second study high self-esteem, low depression and high levels of social ...
