OBJECTIVE--To assess the effect of each of the components of the national capitation funding formula--population projections and age and mortality weighting--at regional and district level. DESIGN--Application of age-cost and mortality weights to the projected 1997 populations of regions and districts, based on the Department of Health public health common dataset. SETTING--Regional and district health authorities in England. RESULTS--The application of the age-cost and mortality weights to projected populations resulted in greater changes in the shares of weighted populations relative to the estimated 1991 population at district level (mean 0, range -17% to 28%) than at regional level (mean 0, range -9% to 6%). At district level mortality weights had less scope for influence (mean 0, range -9% to 14%) than population projections (mean 0, range -16% to 31%) or age weights (mean 0, range -20% to 30%). CONCLUSIONS--The adjustments to the 1991 population shares due to the application of the ...

The City of Dublin Skin and Cancer Hospital located here in Hume Street has a proud tradition of service to the people of Dublin, a service which we, indeed, of the Eastern Regional Health Authority are anxious to see continued and expanded. As you know, the Authority was established on the 1st March 2000 and has been given the task of building on current achievements to provide an integrated seamless and co·ordinated service for the 1.4 million who live in the Eastern Region catchment area. I use the figure 1.4 million advisedly because I think that is about the current population. We understand that by the year 2005 it will be 1.5 million and by the end of the decade it will be 1.6 million, so in a period of about fifteen years the population of the region will have gone from 1.3 million to 1.6 million which is an increase, in fifteen years, of 300,000 people which is about the same population as in the North Eastern Health Board or the Mid·Western Health Board, so in fact we are ... ...

Seventy six addresses were selected from each postcode area, yielding a total of 6080 addresses. At each of these addresses one adult aged 18 or over was selected using a Kish grid.18 Individuals in institutions, hostels, care homes, or bed and breakfast accommodation were excluded from the sample. Of the selected addresses, 12% were unproductive as they were non-residential, empty, or untraceable. The final sample comprising 3395 subjects was representative of the general population with respect to age, sex, and social class. During the interview, respondents completed the EQ-5D ...

They make two conclusions from these results. One is that there is insufficient data to really answer this question definitively - only five studies. We therefore need to conduct further research into this important question. But, what evidence we do have does not support the conclusion that regional differences in utilization of medical procedures are due to overuse. Differences in overuse were slight and simply did not explain the disparity in health care use and costs in the regions compared. Their review suggests that Gawandes assumption may not be warranted. It suggests, at the least, that the story is more complicated.. Conclusion. Like any complex issue the answer is probably "all of the above." In other words - the problem of rising health care costs has many causes all of which need to be addressed if we are going to have a significant impact. We need to be realistic about the potential of addressing each contribution, however. It is tempting to blame the culture of medicine and ...

A PET Scan (Positron Emission Tomography) is a way of making 3D images that show how the body works. A radioactive drug (FDG) is injected in the arm of the patient and it goes to places where glucose is used for energy. The patient is then placed in a PET Scanner. This device consists of thousands of radiation detectors that measure the radiation that is being emitted by the radioactive drug (FDG) in the patient. These images show the areas of the body that are actively burning glucose for energy. Since cancer is relatively fast growing, compared with other normal cells, this technology can be used to locate a disease or to better understand how widespread it is. The procedure is similar to a CT Scan, but it takes a little longer to allow for the radioisotopes to make their way around the body through the blood stream.. ...

Ideally, that sort of scenario will be common in the near future. Interestingly, the groundwork for regional health information organizations (RHIOs) was laid in the 1990s. Back then, the concept of community health information networks (CHINs) started to grab hold of the health plan market. But it failed because of two factors, according to Donald Gravlin, vice president at Capgemini, the consulting company: "technology and economics/politics.". Back then, the technology to create, maintain, and support a national database was still in its infancy. "The ability to easily codify and share data was nonexistent, so there was a technical hurdle to overcome.". Compounding that problem was the fact that within many communities that were served by two or more health delivery networks, "there were prevalent fears of patient stealing," says Gravlin.. "Resolving the politics to allow health care organizations to share data, while refraining from taking the position of I will if you will and you go ...

The study is entitled "HUMAN RESOURCES DEVELOPMENT IN HIGHER EDUCATION IN KERALA". The concept "Human Resource Development" is of high value in business and industry and has been used and applied since years. In industry and business the human element is considred as a resource and hence its development and protection is very essential and inevitable. Of all the factors of production, human resource is the only factor having rational faculty and therefore, it must be handled with utmost care. Right recruitment, right training and right induction followed by faultless monitoring and welfare measures are but decisive factors in business and industry. Altogether there is a constant attention up on human factor there. But this is not a practice at all in education. So far there has not been any such measure of care and close watch and performance analysis of human resource on education front. This may be the main reason for lack of accountability in the sphere of education. The present study ...
