Until September 28, 1998, the Canadian Red Cross was responsible for all blood services in Canada. On the recommendation of the Krever Commission, the organization was removed from this position and replaced by the Canadian Blood Services. This was due to nationwide controversy when it was revealed that the Canadian Red Cross had supplied, between 1986 and 1990, blood which it knew might be tainted with Hepatitis C and HIV.[26] In 1994, an investigation found that 95 percent of hemophiliacs who used blood products supplied by the Canadian Red Cross prior to 1990 had contracted Hepatitis C.[27] According to the Krever Commission, approximately 85 percent of those infections could have been prevented. Compared to blood services in Europe and the United States, the CRC was slow to disseminate information about possible infection to those receiving blood products.[28] More than 1,100 Canadians were infected with HIV and 20,000 contracted Hepatitis C from blood transfusions given by the Red Cross ...

When disaster strikes in the United States, there is one organization that is on everyones mind, the American Red Cross. It has operated for over a hundred years on the simple premise of delivering aid to those in need. The organization does this by reacting effectively and efficiently to natural and man-made disasters and delivering humanitarian aid to those affected. In recent years, though, the American Red Cross has come under scrutiny for mismanagement and ineffective disaster relief. The purpose of this paper is to use ethical standards of the nonprofit sector to evaluate and explain the performance of the American Red Cross in recent years. Considering outside factors like climate change and public opinion, a conclusion can be drawn.

STATEWIDE - The American Red Cross is facing a critical blood shortage and is issuing an emergency call for eligible blood and platelet donors of all blood types to give now and help save lives.. The shortfall is the equivalent of the Red Cross not collecting any blood donations for more than four days.. Its crucial that people donate now to meet the needs of patients every day and to be prepared for emergencies that require significant volumes of donated blood, said Bernadette Jay, external communications manager of the Mid-Atlantic and Appalachian Blood Services Regions. Red Cross parcel refers to packages containing mostly food, tobacco and personal hygiene items sent by the International Association of the Red Cross to prisoners of war during the First and Second World Wars, as well as at other times. It can also refer to medical parcels and so-called release parcels provided during World War II. The Red Cross arranged them in accordance with the provisions of the Geneva Convention of 1929. During World War II these packages augmented the often-meager and deficient diets in the PoW camps, contributing greatly to prisoner survival and an increase in morale. Modern Red Cross food parcels provide basic food and sanitary needs for persons affected by natural disasters, wars, political upheavals or similar events. More recent catastrophes involving delivery of Red Cross parcels include events in Georgia, Thailand and Great Britain. The Australian Red Cross reported dispatching a total of 395,695 food parcels and 36,339 clothing parcels to Allied PoWs in Germany ...

The agency became the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in 1863. Its emblem was a red cross on a white background, the inverse of the Swiss flag. A year later the first Geneva Convention was adopted initially by 12 nations, codifying acceptable treatment of sick and wounded soldiers. Dunant was awarded the first Nobel Peace Prize in 1901 for these accomplishments.. The ICRC encouraged the creation of national Red Cross societies, today known as the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. These organizations were independent from the ICRC, which acted as a liaison between the societies. During World War I the ICRC expanded from ten employees to over 3,000 and organized itself into national bureaus for each combatant nation.. Red Cross efforts were invaluable during World War I. So I propose that additional games be installed if donors are willing to pay for the Red Cross to have its own copy. The games must be rated E for Everyone and be able to be played with a trackball mouse. One such game that can be played for hours on end is Civilization. It is a wholesome, educational game in which the player builds a civilization from scratch, founding cities and building libraries, universities, and a military to protect those cities. If you played it, you know how addicting it is. Other games will make your thumbs sore and your brain numb. People who play Civilization can and do play it for hours. A single game of Civilization can take 24 hours or more to complete. So pheresis donors would have to play their games over the course of several visits ...

Students need the hands-on experience working with the manikins in our classes to really get comfortable practicing the skills that save lives. Each student is given their own manikin face at the start of class, so that everyone gets the chance to practice on their own clean manikin. After each class, each manikin and manikin face goes through a thorough cleaning and sanitation process to ensure that they are safe to use for the next round of students. All the manikin faces are washed, then washed again with bleach, then air-dried, and finally wrapped in plastic wrap to be stored until they are needed for the next class. The manikins themselves are bathed with antibacterial wipes until they are squeaky-clean and germ-free. Heres a picture of manikin faces drying in the Manikin ...

[Apropos of the International Nurses Day, authors discuss Nightingales impact on the development of nursing and her role in international nursing history. They consider as one of the main achievements of Nightingale that she raised the profile of nursing to an appreciated profession, thereby contributing to modifying the widely held view on womens role in society in Hungary, too. After reviewing the developments related to the educational empowerment of women in the Hungary of the 19th century they suggest that these changes as well as awakening of the nation might explain the decision of the Hungarian Red Cross Society to table a motion at the 8th International Conference of Red Cross Societies in London with a view to establishing a medal in honour of Florence Nightingale. The Hungarian proposal was approved by the international conference in Washington in 1912 and a resolution was passed to institute the Florence Nightingale Medal. ]

The humanitarian crisis in Syria is growing and the UK needs to do more to help, says the British Red Cross - on the eve of a UN conference on resettlement.
TOP URGENT. Turkey continues to smuggle weapons and money to terrorist mercenaries in Libya via Tunisia. This is a continuing problem, causing death and destruction in Libya. Turkey loads the ship in Turkey and sometimes they fly weapons out of Ankara. These ships are camouflaged as ships from other countries. They have previously used Iran and are currently using one marked from the Netherlands. On the ship, they have disguised the weapons in containers marked Red Cross. They use the Tunisian port of Zarzis, near the Libyan border. This is an exact repeat of the dirty game that was played by NATO et.al. in 2011.. Second breaking story: THERE WAS NO WATER SHUT OFF TO TRIPOLI (see UN report below). This comes directly from the people on the ground in Libya. The story is propaganda being put out by the terrorist militias. They are losing their criminal hold on Libya and are playing dirty games as usual. Expect more of their lies in the days to come as they get more and more desperate.. The UN ...
Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a major cause of lower respiratory tract infection in young children in both the community and hospital setting. The clinical presentation, patient and phylogenetic characteristicsof laboratory-confirmed cases of RSV, as well as risk factors for nosocomial infectionat Red Cross War Memorial Childrens Hospital in Cape Town were analysed. The median duration of symptoms prior to diagnosis was 2 days (IQR: 1-4 days). Nosocomial infections wereidentified in 22 (9.7 %) children. There were pre-existing medical conditions in 113 (50.0 %) excluding HIV, most commonly prematurity (n = 58, 50.0 %) and congenital heart disease (n = 34, 29.3 %). Accounting for Nonprofit organizations (NPOs) has become an interesting and promising topic, which is different from commercial accounting in many ways: The objective of NPOs is to provide services for public benefits, not to generate profits for partners or shareholders. Since their expenditures must be covered by revenues, which are financed by grants or donations, not market transactions, NPOs is money focused, while commercial organizations are profit focused. A case study of British Red Cross (BRC) is undertaken by analyzing its bookkeeping and financial statements, the problems and suggestions could be helpful to improve the financial reports of the other NPOs. Key words: NPOs, BRC, money focus, profit focus, bookkeeping, financial reports, fund accounting ...

From the war diary of the Canadian Convalescent Hospital, Uxbridge (Volume 1, Oct 4, 1916) This hospital is located in College Park, Hillingdon, in the Parish of Hillingdon. The Main building is an old mansion and formerly belonging to the late Col. Cox, a late partner in the well-known banking institution of that name. The grounds consisting of about 40 or 50 acres are beautifully laid out with shrubbery and ornamental trees. They have a Southern exposure and are protected on the north and east by high ground at the bottom of the hospital grounds, runs a small stream. The walks and drives of the immediate vicinity of this hospital are very picturesque and beautiful, and in old times this locality was regarded by Londoners as a health resort. In addition to the Main building which is capable of holding about 115 patients, 16 Salonika huts have been erected during the season and this will bring the capacity of the hospital up to 500 beds. The Canadian Red Cross Society has erected a recreation ...

In the United States a public service announcement(PSA) is defined by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in a formal and detailed manner. A PSA is any announcement (including network) for which no charge is made and which promotes programs, activities, or services of federal, state, or local governments (e.g., recruiting, sale of bonds, etc.) or the programs, activities or services of non-profit organizations (e.g., United Way, Red Cross blood donations, etc.) and other announcements regarded as serving community interests, excluding time signals, routine weather announcements and promotional announcements. PSAs came into being with the entry of the United States into World War II. Radio broadcasters and advertising agencies offered their skills and facilities toward the war effort and established the War Advertising Council which became the official homefront propaganda arm of the Office of War Information. Print, outdoor advertising and especially radio became the carriers of such ...

Many humanitarian and nonprofit organizations provide CPR and AED training. The American Red Cross offers courses in CPR and combined CPR/AED techniques, as does the AHA.. The AED can detect abnormalities in a persons heart rhythm and, if needed, deliver an electric shock to the chest to restore normal rhythm to the heart. This is known as defibrillation.. Sudden cardiac arrests are often caused by a fast and irregular heart rhythm that begins in the hearts lower chambers, or ventricles. This is ventricular fibrillation. An AED can help restore the hearts normal rhythm and even help revive a person whose heart has stopped functioning. Learn more about how the heart works.. With training, an AED is easy to use. Data presented by Herwaldt and colleagues also suggest that the number and frequency of transfusion-associated babesiosis cases are rapidly increasing. Whereas only 7 (4%) cases were reported during the initial 11 years (1979 to 1989) of study, 122 (77%) cases occurred from 2000 to 2009. This precipitous increase is corroborated by recently published reports from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Rhode Island Blood Center, American Red Cross, and the New York City Department of Mental Health and Hygiene (7-10). The observed increase in cases raises the question of whether the parasites endemic range is expanding, if prospective donors are becoming infected more frequently, or if physicians and hospitals are more attuned to potential Babesia infections in blood recipients. As with many questions regarding emerging infectious agents, this is difficult to answer, but the explanation is probably multifactorial. Studies to define the geographic spread of the parasite are limited but should ...
