Denver, CO., April 11, 2011 - Research to be presented this week at The Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) Conference in Washington, D.C., demonstrates that consumption of white potatoes (non-fried) by children does not displace other vegetables from childrens meals. In fact, meals that contain white potatoes contain more servings of other vegetables, and are significantly higher in potassium, fiber and vitamin C. Both potassium and fiber were identified as nutrients of concern in the 2010 Dietary Guidelines, released February 2011. Potatoes belong in the diet. Children who consume white potatoes have more nutrient-dense diets, overall, and they actually eat more of other vegetables, said lead researcher Adam Drewnowski, PhD. There were no differences in the prevalence of overweight or obesity between children who did and did not consume potatoes.. Researchers studied more than 11,500 children ages 5-18 years of age using data from four cycles of the National ...
An Intelligent Profiling System (30) contains a knowledge base (16) and form base (24) in which domain knowledge, forms, filters, rules, and clocks are represented. In the Intelligent Profiling System, a liaison (34), and intelligent profiling engine (20), and a knowledge based system (10) work together to maximize the utility of informaiton gathered from user (32) over time. The system profiles users by presenting forms containing questions to users. Forms are selected based upon the results of utilizing filters, rules, and clocks to identify target populations of users. Filters, rules, and clocks also specify what information is important with respect to each user and how frequently information about each user must be refreshed. Liaison (34) presents forms to a user, stores answers in a user data tank (12), and delivers benefits to the user as a reward for answering questions. The system maximizes the utility of information gethered from users over time according to form weights.
European Micronutrients Recommendations Aligned project aims to harmonize dietary recommendations throughout Europe. Recommended nutrient intakes during lactation are based on limited data and are often extrapolated from known secretion of the nutrient in milk with adjustments for bioavailability, so that differences between values can be partly ascribed to differences in methodological approaches and how these approaches were applied. Few studies have considered the impact of lactation on the mothers nutritional status. Rather, focus has been placed on the influence of maternal nutritional status on the composition of her breast milk. Most common nutritional deficits in breast milk are the result of maternal deficiencies of the water-soluble vitamins, thiamine, riboflavin and vitamins B6 and B12. Other than maternal vitamin A status, which to some extent is reflected in breast milk, concentrations of fat-soluble vitamins and most minerals in breast milk are less affected by maternal status. ...
Although some research suggests high activity levels in athletes may increase their vitamin and mineral needs, there are no official guidelines for micronutrient recommendations specific to athletes at this time.
Women in the WHI DM Trial were followed between December 1993 and March 2005, 8.1 years on average. During annual in-person follow-up contacts at the Clinical Centers, staff collected clinical measures, such as height and weight, and self-report measures, such as dietary intake, physical activity, personal habits, and psychosocial variables. All women provided blood specimens at baseline and year 1, although specimens were analyzed only for a 4.3% cohort. At years 3, 6, and 9, blood specimens were collected and analyzed only from the 4.3% cohort. The 4.3% cohort was nested within the 6% cohort of DM participants who provided 4-day food records and 24-hour recalls. Thus, WHI has blood analyte and nutrient intake data on a 4.3% cohort of DM participants at baseline and years 1, 3, 6, and 9. Mammogram reports, from the DM particpants personal health care provider, were collected every two years. Medical outcome information was collected from all DM participants at the annual in-person Clinical ...
Hypertension (HTN) is a prevalent risk factor for cardiovascular, cerebrovascular, and renal disease, and disproportionately affects African Americans (AA). Although HTN awareness and treatment rates among AA are similar to, or exceed non-Hispanic whites, control of HTN among AAs remains inadequate. Randomized clinical trials have demonstrated the effectiveness of lifestyle measures in lowering BP, including the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet, which lowers systolic BP 6-14 mmHg. DASH calls for increased consumption of fruits, vegetables, and low fat dairy, and decreased saturated fat and sodium intake. There is limited evidence that DASH has been widely adopted by the public and AA from lower income communities may be less able to adopt DASH as currently disseminated due to barriers related to income, education, attitudes about foods, health beliefs, and neighborhood availability of healthier foods. We propose to utilize quantitative and qualitative research techniques ...
Particle and Optics Profiling System (POPS) The Particle and Optics Profiling System (POPS) is an assembly of instruments designed to count and measure particles and to determine optical and environmental properties of water with depth. The heart of POPS is the Large Aggregate Profiling System (LAPS), designed and operated by our colleague, Dr. Ian Walsh. LAPS consists of a video camera synched with a strobe light which flashes at predetermined intervals as the system is slowly lowered through the water. The light is channeled so that it illuminates only a narrow slab of water. The video camera faces the slab of light and records images of large particles in the water. Your eyes record the same phenomenon when sunlight passes into a darkened room through a narrow slit in the curtains. You see hundreds of dust particles wafting through the slab of light, but the particles on either side of the slab are invisible. If you put a ruler next to the illuminated particles, you could measure their size. ...

A previous large scale search for dietary trials and cardiovascular disease covered the Cochrane library, Medline, Embase, CAB abstracts, CVRCT registry, and SIGLE to May 1998 plus bibliographies of collected papers and reviews.9 We carried out a further search, seeking trials on sodium restriction and blood pressure in Medline, Embase, and the Cochrane library (to July 2000). We checked bibliographies of systematic reviews and included trials; the searches were not limited by language.. We included trials in which randomisation was adequate, there was a usual or control diet group, the intervention aimed to reduce sodium intake, the intervention was not multifactorial, the participants were not children, acutely ill, pregnant, or institutionalised, follow up was at least 26 weeks, and data on any of the review outcomes were available.. For this review our primary outcomes were mortality and cardiovascular events, blood pressure, and urinary sodium excretion. We also collected data on quality of ...

French fries, also known as chips or pommes frites, have got to be the worlds top favorite fried food. They are enjoyed in different shapes (e.g., potato wedges and curly fries) both as a snack or as the source of carbohydrate in a meal, and are frequently found on the menus of cuisines around the world. An average serving (2.5 oz) of fries carries 231 calories and around 12 grams of fat. A great way to cut down on fat and increase nutrients is to replace traditional french fries with oven-baked yam (or sweet potato) fries. You will be amazed that a similar serving of these delicious fries contains only 30 calories and about 3.5 grams of fat, plus a whole lot more nutrients than a white potato. Just dont forget to watch the mayo dipping.. ...
Roxnhead, thanks for your reply. You problem seems to align pretty well with mine. Can you tell me more about your new diet? The most obvious carbs are from pasta, grains, and bread. But white potatoes, dried fruits, and other vegetables can contain high carb contents. How strict did you go? Also, did your muscle weakness start after going gluten free or was it present prior to that? I recently fasted 1 week on water only and altered my diet to a more vegetarian/raw type diet following that. The fast didnt address the muscle weakness/fatigue whatsoever. My diet change has put my CBC blood profile completely in-line but the muscle weakness and fatigue is still unchanged. I debate whether a longer fast may help as I fasted until my fat reserves were depleted(Im thin so it didnt take long at all). Longer fasting would cause more muscle tissue to be torn down and rebuilt during recovery. Whether this will help is unknown but Im targeting another attempt this fall/winter. I have seen a ...

This is definitely the case with the currently predominant treatment strategy of giving dogs with CRF a low-protein diet. Ingredients. From the day of her arrival she was eating royal canin kibble mixed with ava kibble, she seemed to enjoy the rc kibble and left the ava, however after 2 days of arrival she started to display symptoms of sickness and diarrhoea. After reading your article, I am feeding what I gave her before which is meat, chicken, yams, & white potato, egg yolks and canned white tuna in water. For this second recipe, its a single serve meal and takes 20 minutes to prepare. If your dogs symptoms improved, it may be because there was an underlying cause, such as a urinary tract infection, that was successfully treated (was your dog treated with antibiotics or anything else?). I added hamburger and sweet potato. We have tried the canned tripe and she ate it once and then snubbed her nose at it. There is no way Ill feel compelled to go back to the white potato after todays recipe. Here, Ive peeled, chopped, and cooked celeriac (celery root) in butter with a dash of salt and pepper. Thats it. The great thing about celeriac is that it softens quickly-within 2-3 minutes of cooking-and develops the same texture, taste and appearance of regular hash browns. So whats stopping you? The Norwegian Scientific Committee for Food and Environment (VKM) has evaluated intake of molybdenum, tolerable upper intake levels and consequences of establishing maximum limits for molybdenum in food supplements at 100, 250, 500 or 1000 µg per day.. VKM support the tolerable upper intake level suggested by the Scientific Committee on Food in 2000 at 600 µg/day.. The highest suggested maximum limit of 1000 µg molybdenum from food supplements will lead to exceedance of the tolerable upper intake level for adults. For 1-3-year-old children, all the suggested maximum limits for molybdenum will lead to exceedance of the tolerable upper intake level. In children, 4-10 years, supplements with 250, 500 or 1000 µg molybdenum will lead to exceedance of the tolerable upper intake levels, whereas for adolescents 11-17 years, the tolerable upper intake level will be exceeded with supplemental doses at 500 or 1000 µg per day.. This VKM-opinion is based merely on previously published reports on upper ...
The Food and Nutrition Board (FNB) sets intake reference values for various nutrients, including vitamin D. The established recommended dietary allowance (RDA) represents a daily intake of vitamin D that is sufficient to maintain bone health and normal calcium metabolism in healthy people.. . Also established is the tolerable upper intake level (UL), which represents the maximum daily amount of a nutrient that is unlikely to cause adverse effects. Since vitamin D is stored in fat cells, excess amounts can build up to dangerous levels, causing high blood calcium and damage to the heart, blood vessels, and kidneys. (24). . The table below outlines the recommended daily intake for vitamin D in International units (IU) and micrograms (mcg), as well as the tolerable upper intake level, for different age groups. (24). . The findings in this report indicate that 47.6% of the U.S. population aged ≥2 years meet the criteria of the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for persons who should limit sodium consumption to 1,500 mg daily (3). For the Dietary Guidelines, the 2005 Institute of Medicine (IOM), Dietary Reference Intakes were used to define the specific subpopulations for whom the 1,500 mg recommendation applies (2). These subpopulations tend to be more responsive than others to the blood pressure-raising effects of sodium (2,3). Additionally, IOM recommends that sodium intake not exceed the tolerable upper intake level of 1,500 mg/day for all children aged 2--3 years. The tolerable upper intake level is defined as the highest daily nutrient intake level that is likely to pose no risk of adverse health effects to nearly all persons in the general population (2). When the IOM recommendation for children aged 2--3 years is combined with the subpopulations recommended in the 2010 Dietary Guidelines to reduce intake to ...

EFSA has reviewed the Tolerable Upper Intake Levels (ULs) for calcium and vitamin D. For vitamin D, the UL for adults and adolescents has been raised from 50 micrograms (50µg) a day to 100µg; the UL for children aged 1-10 has been increased from 25µg a day to 50µg a day. For calcium, the Panel concluded that no new data have become available which would require a revision of the UL for adults of 2,500mg a day.
Responding to the expansion of scientific knowledge about the roles of nutrients in human health, the Institute of Medicine, in partnership with Health Canada, has updated what used to be known as Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDAs) and renamed their new approach to these guidelines Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs).
APRE researchers examined total vegetable and white potato (WP) consumption of WCBA, using the most recent data available from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) and the Food Pyramid Equivalents Database 2009-2010 and 2011-2012. The study authors found that, on average, WCBA consumed 1.36 cup equivalents of total vegetables. Depending on physical activity levels, the 2010 DGA recommend 2.5 to 3 cups of vegetables a day for WCBA needing 1,800-2,400 calories per day; this recommendation includes 5 to 6 cups of starchy vegetables a week. Non-Hispanic white women, Hispanic women, and women of other races consumed an average of 1.39, 1.43, and 1.46 cup equivalents of vegetables, respectively. On average, non-Hispanic blacks consumed 1.11 cup equivalents of vegetables--significantly fewer than women of all other races. WCBA consumed about 0.31 cup equivalents of WP. According to the data, said Storey, white potato consumption is low for WCBA--about 2 cups a week, on average, ...

Apple; apricot; birch pollen; carrot; cherry; hazelnut; peach; pear; plum; white potato. The oral allergy syndrome (OAS), also referred to as the pollen-food allergy syndrome, is a unique form of food allergy characterized by a localized reaction of the mouth and throat that occurs when affected individuals eat certain fresh fruits and vegetables. Patients with allergy to birch pollen will also often have allergies to one or more food allergens including apple, carrot, hazelnut, white potato, pear, plum, peach, cherry, and apricot. Individuals with OAS experience contact urticaria (itching and hives) that is confined almost exclusively to the mouth and throat upon ingestion of the triggering food. This condition only rarely affects other target organs. Characteristic symptoms of OAS include itching of the lips, palate, tongue, and throat. OAS is a self-limiting condition with symptoms that occur immediately on contact with foods and typically resolve rapidly. It is important to differentiate ...
Lidl GB recently announced a new healthy food commitment called the Healthy Eating Pledge, which its CEO, Christian Härtnagel, says is the discounters most ambitious target yet. The initiative aims to encourage healthier diets and increase sales of nutritional products to 85% or more of total sales by 2025, based on tonnage volume.. Lidls specialist nutrition teams developed a nutrient profiling system (NPS) to measure the healthy level of foods. The NPS is based on Public Health Englands nutrient criteria for front-of-pack traffic light labeling, which focuses on fat, saturated fat, sugar, and salt quantity, ranking all products as healthy, healthier, or least healthy.. The nutrition teams are also reviewing over 200 lines annually with potential for improvement to meet the healthy or healthier criteria. Furthermore, Lidl says it will engage with suppliers to boost its more nutritional products.. This commitment follows close behind Lidls investment in a separate Get Fresh initiative. ...

A broad literature search was conducted in the MEDLINE database. VKM found few relevant studies focusing on potential negative health effects for most of the amino acids. Amino acids have a high bioactive potential, and thus VKM concluded that amino acids that are not included in human studies or that are poorly studied may represent a moderate risk.. No tolerable upper intake levels are established for the individual amino acids. The Panel has suggested the following categories:. ...

the only thing that has been studied involving starch and AS was a 9month dietary trial on 36 AS patients that were instructed to increase their intake of Red Meat, White Meat, Fish, Beans & Peas, Nuts, Vegetables & Salads, Milk, Fruit and reduce their intake of Bread, Potatoes, Chips, Rice, Spaghetti, Cereals, Cakes, Biscuits. the ESR of patients decreased by an average of 14mm/hr and there was a significant decrease in serum IgA. starch restriction may have been responsible for the improvement but there are also many other variables that are changed by following those guidelines which makes it impossible based on this study alone to conclude that specifically reducing starch intake improves AS symptoms. it can however be concluded that following those specific dietary guidelines has been shown to lead to an improvement of inflammatory markers and symptoms in AS patients and that changing diet can have a significant impact AS symptoms. since the patients were instructed to increase consumption ...
In an EPI diet, a 10 to 15% ratio of organ meats usually works well. If this is too rich for your individual dog, reduce the amount. Some EPI dogs have been known to only be able to tolerate 1% of organ meats. Others tolerate 15% without a problem.. Vegetables. Again, always introduce only 1 change or addition to the diet at a time. When adding vegetables, the better digested are the very finely ground (or mashed) and thoroughly cooked. Veggies such as the root vegetables, like sweet potatoes (better than white potatoes), turnips, beets or carrots are usually well tolerated. Vegetables that grow on the ground are also good like squash or pumpkin. Broccoli, green beans, etc are also good to mix in, however, as with anything else, the tolerable ratio will vary from dog to dog.. In an EPI diet, a 0 to 30% ratio of vegetables (carb content) usually works well. (side note: if dog is prone to crystals… do not feed broccoli). Also, please understand that vegetables also have fiber content, so be ...

Marcy is a late maturing white potato variety. It was originally bred in 1990 at Cornell University from a cross between the Atlantic variety and Q155-3 variety. It is mostly used for chipping but can be used for baking and boiling. It has good storability; chip color is good even after short to medium storage. Marcy has a high yielding crop. Marcy plants are tall and semi-erect with no pigmentation in the stem and very prominent wings. The sprouts are red-violet with a spherical shape; the tip has a semi-open habit and is weakly pubescent with no pigment while the base is moderately pubescent with moderate pigmentation. The leaves have an open silhouette and have a green color except on midribs and petioles, which are not pigmented. The primary leaflets are in four pairs, are large and elliptical with the base cordate and the tip acuminate. There are few secondary and tertiary leaflets. The terminal leaflets are medium-sized and have an ovate shape with the tip acuminate and the base cordate ...
A body scanning measurement, typing and profiling apparatus and method utilizing microwave energy. Microwaves are used to measure the size and shape of an individual. An array of miniaturized transmitting antennas direct RF energy to a similarly sized array of receiving antennas. Microwaves are directed toward an object, such as a human being, to be measured and the unabsorbed energy of the microwaves transmitted is measured and converted to a signal representative of the size and shape of the object being measured. A computer processor generates vital body measurements and stores such measurements for future use.
