Rare Book Lover Banned From Library. DENVER -- Who knew bed bugs could be book worms?. The Denver Public Library had to quarantine and fumigate four areas at the main branch in just the past three weeks because of bed bugs, KMGH-TV in Denver reported.. The tiny insect is being spread by a customer trying to preserve rare books, but ironically its because of his actions that the books now have to be destroyed.. Some of the bed bugs fell out of those materials that had been returned, said Denver Public Library spokeswoman Celeste Jackson.. The infected books came from 69-year-old Denver resident Roger Goffeney. He checks out historic books, some 200 years old, and helps archive them online in an effort called the Gutenberg Project.. Its rare books gone wild at the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library.. Freed for a time from their usual, lonely confines, a collection of more than 30 historic materials tracing the evolution of law in the region - some dating to the 18th century - are on display in the librarys main branch downtown.. Called, From the Wild, Wild West to Law and Order: The Evolution of the Law in the Northwest Territory, the free exhibit is open through Nov. 29 in The Blade Rare Book Room on the librarys third floor.. The exhibit is the first to have an extended stay in the rare book room, and it is one of particular significance to Library Director Clyde Scoles.. With our emphasis on northwest Ohio history, the materials fit very nicely into our collection, he said. Its the past. Its the baseline for which we draw our history, our literature, what we are, and what we have become.. The books on display in glass cases follow the development of law in the region from 1750, when much of what is now Ohio ...
In this article, the strong resemblance of Linear A, Linear B characters with the Proto-Bulgarian characters of the Pliska inscription is used for identifying the phonetic value of each Proto-Bulgarian character. Because said characters are on rays of a rosette, several inscription readings are possible. The selection of the valid reading, its separation in words and its deciphering were made on the basis of similarities between the inscription words and corresponding words in the surviving Slavic languages. The resulting deciphering is: the massacre of the Romans drink glum, but resist at, which can be loosely deciphered as: drink the bitter cup of the Roman massacre glum, but hold on together. The massacre mentioned in the inscription was certainly that that occurred during the war between the Bulgarians of khan Krum and the Byzantines of emperor Nikephoros, when this last on 20th July 811 sieged Pliska, capital of the First Bulgarian Empire, plundered its treasures and burned it to ground.

This book was a runaway best seller back in 1971. It is a primer for anyone who wishes to understand the basic workings of the global network of Insiders that is determined to wield power over all of mankind. After reading it, many people never looked at national and world events in the same way again.. It is a classic book of great importance, having upset the ruling Western political Establishment by exposing much of their secretive underlying history and agendas that control the political processes of the United States and much of the rest of the world. The book was light-years ahead of its time when it was published.. The first few chapters contain preparatory information meant to acclimate uninitiated readers, followed by delving deeply into historical information explaining agendas of the Global Elite. The book shows how this group of Establishment insiders has historically been responsible for secretively establishingand then supporting the totalitarian Communist regimes in Russia, China, ...

it is close in the behavior to a wormhole in the magnetic thing though. but it is not a real wormhole. if you had a real wormhole and you passed a flux line through it and the other end was some distance away you would have separate discrete charges whether magnetic or electrical. in that way a wormhole can emulate a monopole because each end of such a wormhole would effectively be a monopole. this thing hides the flux line even though it does so with mu-metal wave guides. so it shows one behavior of a wormhole but it is not achieved by actual wormhole physics. still as the article said even this achievement has implications for sensors, and other developments ...

Ayurved is Indian system of medicine and now, it is alternate system of medicine in India. This is my little attempt to make it back to main system of medicine in India. M.L.R. Ayurvedic College, Charbhi Oadri, Bhiwaru (HR) Preface Ayurveda is one of the most ancient systems of medicine in the world. Its origin goes back to the scared vedas which are considered the oldest scriptures on the human wisdom and civilisation. From clinical point of view, today there is not even a single book in which systematically practical ayurvedic management is mentioned. Keeping this in
FIRST EDITION, second issue (see below) of the most important contribution to circulatory physiology after William Harveys De motu cordis, published three years before Lowers birth. Nobel Laureate André Cournand considered Lowers book to be one of the most important texts in the history of physiology because of the nature of its observations, the rigor of its experimental design and demonstrations, and its simple and convincing form of presentation… Lower entered medical practice in London in 1666 and continued experiments he had begun in Oxford on the motion and color of the blood and on transfusion. His observations on these subjects were summarized in Tractatus de corde. Lower made important observations on the structure of cardiac muscle, the quantity of blood in the vascular system, the velocity of blood flow, and the effects of aeration of blood as it passed through the lungs. He was impressed by the complex arrangement of muscular fibers in the heart and felt their unique ...

By the latter half of the 19th century, oceanography was truly international in scope. In contrast to Britainss Challenger expedition, which conducted a world-wide inventory of the seas, the Voringen expedition was a detailed study of the physical characteristics of the Norwegian Sea between Norway, Iceland, Spitsbergen, and Greenland. The leaders of the expedition, Henrik Mohn and George Sars, convinced the Norwegian government to fund the expedition because no extensive investigations of the open seas adjacent to Norway had as yet been undertaken by the government. Mohn and Sars linked the science of oceanography to the well-being of Norway as a nation when Mohn wrote that the sea is the origin and preserver of our existence as a civilized nation; and that expanse of sea being as regards its physical conditions well nigh unknown, on Norway should first devolve the labour of their solution. (b. I, Historical Account, p.6). ...
John Beaumont, a British surgeon and geologist, was a man of considerable reading, of excessive credulity, and a firm believer in supernatural agency. His principal and certainly most curious performance, An Historical, Physiological, and Theological Treatise of Spirits, Apparitions, Witchcrafts is written in an amusing, gossiping style, and abounds with grotesque tales and illustrations from little-known authors. His personal experience of spirits, good and bad, was long and varied (pages 91-4, 393-7); but he innocently contrives to lessen the effect of his narration by adding that in their frequent visitations all would disswade me from drinking too freely - Dictionary of National Bibliography. ...

Leslie, the way I see it, you were afflicted with two handicaps. Number one; as already described, you were sundered from your Pāli dictionary at a crucial time. Number two; you have only read Inscriptions of Ceylon, Vol. 1 in bits and pieces. A historian Leslie should be reading history books with the same avidity that an adolescent girl reads bodice rippers. If you had you wouldnt have missed page cvi of IC1;. But there is a term of respect applied to Buddhist monks in the North Indian Brahmi inscriptions, (Bharhut Inscriptions (CII, Vol. II, pt. II) by H. Luders, E. Waldschmidt and M.A. Mehendale, p.191 and The Monuments of Sanchi by Sir John Marshal and Alfred Foucher, Vol. I, p. 295; Inscription No.265.) that has been avoided in our documents. This is aya, equivalent to Skt. ārya and P. ayya, meaning Aryan or Noble. This term in our inscriptions, is reserved for princes.. These two handicaps Leslie led you to the erroneous conclusion that aya and ayya are isolated Sri Lankan ...

A port is the two ends of an exotic-matter wormhole with negative mass. Each end of the wormhole is mounted in a positive-mass case, and you can (lets say) carry one end down to the moon to shorten the spacetime distance between the space station and the moon. Ports can be collapsed from either end by destabilizing the wormhole. I invented ports in 2006 for Vanilla and in that story I did a lot of work showing what you could do with them. I felt writers had generally treated wormholes as magic gateways and neglected their mayhemic possibilities. I mean, just imagine if the two ends of a wormhole could be moved independently! You could set up all sorts of wacky gravity and pressure differentials. Then in 2007 Portal came out. So, I give up. Ports in the Constellation universe work just like in Portal, with two differences. First, you cant shoot wormholes out of guns, because a) it takes an enormous amount of energy to make one, and b) a wormhole has two sides. In Portal terms, the blue ...

The Life of Abraham Lincoln as President. Imagine yourself in the early 21st century, finding an unpublished book written by a friend of Abraham Lincoln. That is exactly what happened to nationally recognized author, Bob OConnor, a member of the Berkeley County Historical Society.OConnor, who lives in Charles Town, West Virginia, found this rare book in the Lamon papers at The Huntington Library in California in 2008. As editor, OConnor, transcribed the document and has added footnotes to identify the characters and define the 19th century legal terms used by Mr. Lamon, who was an attorney.. Ward Hill Lamon was born in Summit Point, VA (today WV) and grew up in Mill Creek, VA (now Bunker Hill, WV). He moved to Illinois in 1846 and became an attorney on the 8th Judicial Circuit of Illinois. No one had as much access to Abraham Lincoln during his presidency than Ward Hill Lamon. Lamon spent many a night sleeping outside the Lincoln bedroom on the floor to protect his friend from harm. But when ...

This trek is basically a PASS, in ancient times this was the nearest route to descend down to KONKAN(Kalyan port) from PLATEAU(Deccan),this pass was mainly used by traders who used to frequent this rout. Near the top one beautiful cave is situated with few water cisterns, there is also a huge pot located on top plateau just at the entrance of the way down to caves, it is said that it used to be a JAKAT NAKA( Toll), and every trader was supposed to put SWARNA MOHOR( Gold coin) in the pot to gain access to the road for descending down. The inscriptions in the caves indicate that they are the work of Satavahana rulers who came into prominence after the fall of the Mauryan empire. It is believed that a powerful woman ruler Naganika, the wife of Satakarni (180-170 BCE) of the Satavahana family commissioned the cave, the statues and the inscriptions. Inscriptions in the cave mention her and her family members. Though the statues adorning the sides of the rectangular cave are now gone, the inscriptions ...

The document that scholars believe the oldest treatise on medicine - the Egyptian papyrus, stores the ideas of the sages who lived almost 4000 years ago - has long been hidden in the vault of rare books the new York medical Academy. It is a remarkable heritage of culture that was already ancient when Rome was in its infancy, and Athens was a small town. Stone monuments of Egypt survived, but the majority of reed manuscripts were lost. Expert James Breasted, who translated the papyrus in the 1920-ies, called him the worlds oldest manifestation of really scientific knowledge. Soon the papyrus will be exhibited in the Metropolitan Museum at the exhibition Medicine of ancient Egypt. Here you can see scan of the mummy, surgical needles and other medical artifacts. Their knowledge of the body were incredible, although they didnt always understand it, said James Allen, curator of Egyptian art at the met.. Papyrus is clear that the ancient physicians knew that the blood pumped by the heart flows ...

It was a cold bright day in London on Wednesday. I spent some time in one of the carrels in the Rare Books Reading Room in the British Library listening to sermons in Welsh, reminding myself how they sounded - the highs and lows in both pitch and volume and the dramatic pauses. There are so many ways to change a voice. I also listened to a sermon in English from the 1950s by Reverend Gordon Franklin on the theme of love. He had such clipped business tones - strangely these had the effect of making what he was describing even more touching and appealing. Then I heard about the early life of Sir David Davies in Ebbw Vale which was interesting, part of a series of interviews about the history of the steel industry in the UK called LIVES IN STEEL. Sir David Davies was an important Trade Unionist, and one of his biggest regrets seems to have been that he left school early even though hed passed the eleven-plus which would have entitled him to go to grammar school. Listening to him being ...

Once Upon A Spine A Bibliophile Mystery (eBook) : Carlisle, Kate : San Francisco bookbinder Brooklyn Wainwright stumbles through the looking glass in a tale of murder, rare books, and a quest for the perfect pie. . . . Brooklyns oh-so-proper future in-laws are traveling from England to meet her, and if thats not enough to set her on edge, rumors abound that the charming Courtyard Shops across the street may be replaced by high-rise apartments. Their trendy neighborhood will be ruined unless Brooklyn and her fian̐cue Derek Stone, can persuade the shopkeepers not to sell. But with a rare edition of Alice in Wonderland causing bad blood at the Brothers Bookshop and a string of petty vandalism making everyone nervous, Brooklyn and Derek feel like theyre attempting six impossible things before breakfast. Then the owner of the Rabbit Hole juice bar is felled by his own heavy shelves, and the local cobbler lies dead beside him. An accident . . . or something more sinister? Things get curiouser and

The numerous alchemical paintings of Thomas Wijck (1616-1677) offer a major source for laboratory imagery in the early modern North, yet they remain misunderstood. Alchemy was more than an obsessive quest for immortality or gold-it was a set of tools by which individuals manipulated nature. Alchemists were not the only experts in transformation: artists workshops were also sites of experimentation where the boundaries of nature were tested. Comparisons between art and alchemy are not new, nor were they ever merely rhetorical: the line between artisanal and alchemical knowledge-particularly in metalworking, dyeing, etching, and other arts-was thin, permeable, at times nonexistent. My current research is directed at Wijcks studio and his patrons, exploring the technical/chemical aspects of painting and printmaking as well as the intellectual and social circles in which he traveled. With support from PACHS, I completed research in the Rare Book collections of the University of Pennsylvania, ...
It is well known nowadays that modern Scientific Revolution benefited indirectly from the theories, results and inventions transmitted from the Arabic/Islamic scientific tradition during the Renaissance. The new element introduced by Dr Rim Turkmani who worked for many years on the original archives is that knowledge transfer didnt stop at the Renaissance. In the following original and well-documented article, Dr Turkmani shows that fellows of the Royal Society and scholars at Oxford and Cambridge were openly borrowing ideas and observations from the Middle East throughout the 17th century. Dr Turkmani transferred highlights from these documents and rare books into the Arabick Roots exhibition supported by FSTC and The Qatar Foundation and that was opened at the Royal Society on the 9th of June (see opening coverage here).. ...

Jean Patou (pronounced [ʒɑ̃ pa.tu]; 19 August 1880 - 8 March 1936) was a French fashion designer and founder of the Jean Patou brand. He became a fashion desgner at his 22. The most lovely things of Jean included fast cars, luxury, fine materials and rare books. He was a pioneer of modernity. Patou was born in Normandy, France in 1880. Patous familys business was tanning and furs. Patou worked with his uncle in Normandy, then moved to Paris in 1910, intent on becoming a couturier. In 1912, he opened a small dressmaking salon called Maison Parry. His entire 1914 collection was purchased by a single American buyer.[citation needed] Patous work was interrupted by World War I. He was mobilised in August 1914, shortly after the German invasion of Belgium. Patou served as a captain in the Zouaves. Reopening his couture house in 1919, he became known for eradicating the flapper look by lengthening the skirt and designing sportswear for women and is considered the inventor of the knitted ...

Pugs love to chew on everything, and they usually choose the most valuable. New furniture, your favorite shoes, childrens toys and rare books are their favorite objects, so try to find a cheaper and safer replacement in advance.. For example, your pug will like chewing pastilles and nodal bones, especially when his teeth are cut. Pugs love large chewing bones - they perfectly help to overcome boredom and, in addition, cleanse teeth of bacterial plaque. Special chewable pastilles can be found in pet stores and supermarkets.. There are many toys for chewing, but avoid small and thin (as they say, on one tooth), even if there are a lot of them in a pack - they can get stuck in the throat of a dog. Choose goodies from reputable manufacturers you trust.. Ask the consultant to pick you a bone that is not too small, but not too large for the pug to pick up and carry. In the end, take the dog with you to the store and watch the reaction to different toys. Just beware of tweeters - they are easy to ...
