Ranaviruses cause systemic infection in fish, amphibians and reptiles. Disease outbreaks associated with ranaviruses have been reported worldwide, and their harmful impact on aquaculture and natural populations of host animals has drawn attention to this group of viruses. In this research, genetic relationships among members of genus Ranavirus, including several known and less studied isolates, were investigated. Sequences of several viral genes were obtained and the phylogenetic analyses based on the sequence data were performed. The results confirm that the genus Ranavirus encompasses genetically divergent isolates. Most of the ranaviruses characterized to date are closely related to epizootic haematopoietic necrosis virus (EHNV) and frog virus 3 (FV3). Santee-Cooper ranaviruses and grouper iridoviruses cluster separately from the main group of ranaviruses. Methods based on polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and subsequent restriction enzyme analysis (REA) were developed for the detection and ...
Ranavirus is a genus of viruses, in the family Iridoviridae. There are four other genera of viruses within the family Iridoviridae, but Ranavirus is the only one that includes viruses that are infectious to amphibians and reptiles. Additionally, it is one of the three genera within this family which infect teleost fishes, along with Lymphocystivirus and Megalocytivirus. The family Iridoviridae is one of the five families of nucleocytoplasmic large DNA viruses. The Ranaviruses, like the Megalocytiviruses, are an emerging group of closely related dsDNA viruses which cause systemic infections in a wide variety of wild and cultured fresh and saltwater fishes. As with Megalocytiviruses, Ranavirus outbreaks are therefore of considerable economic importance in aquaculture, as epizootics can result in moderate fish loss or mass mortality events of cultured fishes. Unlike Megalocytiviruses, however, Ranavirus infections in amphibians have been implicated as a contributing factor in the global decline of ...
Infection with Rana grylio virus (RGV), an iridovirus isolated in China in 1995, resulted in a high mortality rate in frogs. The complete genome sequence of RGV was determined and analyzed. The genomic DNA was 105,791 bp long, with 106 open reading frames (ORFs). Dot plot analysis showed that the gene order of RGV shared colinearity with three completely sequenced ranaviruses. A phylogenetic tree was constructed based on concatenated sequences of iridovirus 26 core-gene-encoded proteins, and the result showed high bootstrap support for RGV being a member of the genus Ranavirus and that iridoviruses of other genera also clustered closely. A microRNA (miRNA) prediction revealed that RGV could encode 18 mature miRNAs, many of which were located near genes associated with virus replication. Thirty-three repeated sequences were found in the RGV genome. These results provide insight into the genetic nature of RGV and are useful for laboratory diagnosis for vertebrate iridoviruses ...

An excellent example of this are the annual outbreaks of ranavirus that have occurred within Florida Box Turtle populations in southwest Florida over the past few years. Ranaviruses have been called cold-blooded killers because they cause illness and death in cold-blooded wildlife such as fish, amphibians, and reptiles. This emerging viral disease has rarely been documented in Florida reptiles, possibly because no one knowledgeable about the disease has been looking. When the first turtle with characteristic clinical signs, such as swollen eyelids, plaques in the mouth, and nasal discharge was admitted to CROW in 2013, our veterinarians were highly suspicious. State wildlife veterinarians were immediately alerted and samples were submitted to the Southeastern Cooperative Wildlife Disease Study (SCWDS), where the diagnosis was confirmed. Since then, we have documented outbreaks of ranavirus in Lee County box turtles every winter. Ranavirus typically exists at low prevalence (less than 5 percent ...

The University of Floridas Aquatic Animal Health Program is proud to host Aquatic Ecosystem Health 2015, consisting of two back-to-back conferences: the Third International Symposium on Ranaviruses and the Fifth Florida Marine Mammal Health Conference. Florida is the perfect location to host a joint discussion addressing global aquatic ecosystem health issues because its ecosystems, economy, and heritage are inextricably linked to its diverse water resources. The Florida ecosystem faces many of the global challenges affecting aquatic ecosystems worldwide, such as population growth, rising temperatures, ocean acidification, chemical contamination of surface waters, an unprecedented number of unexplained marine mammal mortality events. Furthermore, significant disease epizootics in freshwater habitats, including ranavirus infections in amphibians, have been increasingly documented. These conferences provide a forum for Marine Mammal and Ranavirus experts to address the complexity of global ...
Understanding the maintenance and spread of invasive diseases is critical in evaluating threats to biodiversity and how to best minimize their impact, which can by done by monitoring disease occurrences across time and space. I sought to apply existing and upcoming molecular tools to assess fluctuations in both presence and strain variation of frog virus 3 (FV3), a species of Ranavirus, across Canadian waterbodies. I explored the temporal patterns and spatial distribution of ranavirus presence across multiple months and seasons using environmental DNA techniques. Results indicate that ranavirus was present in approximately 72.5% of waterbodies sampled on a fine geographical scale (,10km between sites, 7,150 km2), with higher detection rates in later summer months than earlier. I then explored the sequence variability at the major capsid protein gene (MCP) and putative virulence gene (vIF-2α) of FV3 samples from Ontario, Alberta, and the Northwest Territories, with the premise of understanding ...

Herpetological Review 43(2), 293-295. - In this project, amphibians were collected from natural ponds and cattle ponds to compare the endemic nature of ranavirus. Hundreds of tadpoles and juvenal frogs were collected for tissue biopsy. The tissues were enzymatically digested and DNA preferentially purified. Spectral analysis revealed pure, good-quality DNA purification and ready for PCR. We performed some ranavirus-spiked controls to determine our minimum detection limits and tested for PCR-inhibition in all samples. Finally, a collection of samples were DNA sequenced for final confirmation that what we were seeing was the actual viral DNA. Chatfield, M. W. H., B. B. Rothermel, C. Brooks, and J. Kay. 2009. Amphibians are declining worldwide, and one cause of this is infectious disease emergence. Mass mortalities caused by a virus or a group of viruses belonging to the genus Ranavirus have occurred in wild common frogs Rana temporaria in England since the 1980s, and ranaviral disease is widespread in amphibians in North America and Canada, where it can also cause mass die-offs. Although there have be ...

Researchers at the Commonwealth Scientific & Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) in Australia have spent years looking for biological methods to control invasive cane toads. Its proving to be a difficult task. The trick is finding a way to do it without killing off native species.. CSIRO researchers looked into the possibility of infecting toads with a fatal, exotic ranavirus-a non-native virus that infects amphibians, reptiles, and fish. They abandoned the idea in 1998, when they found that it killed a native frog species as well as cane toads.. Gene technology also looks promising. The hunt is on for a gene critical to toad development that could be switched off to prevent metamorphosis-the changing of a tadpole into an adult frog. If the toads dont reach adulthood, says CSIROs Dr. Tony Robinson, they wont be able to reproduce.. Dr. Alex Hyatt at CSIROs Australian Animal Health Laboratory thinks that a ranavirus inserted with the development-controlling gene can be used as a ...

I have been able to trace a hitherto unidentified quotation in the Ratnagotravibhāga(vrtti) (RGV(V)) to the Tathāgatagarbhasūtra (TGS). The sentence in question occurs in the RGV(V) in the context of the explanation of the three svabhāvas of the dhātu, viz., dharmakāya, tathatā and gotra, the three key terms of verses 1.27-28, which constitute the central section of the RGVV. The quotation is part of the commentary on the third aspect, i.e., gotra, and is placed after the last of the three interpretations of the compound tathāgatagarbha. In this context the dhātu of living beings, i.e., their buddha essence, has just been declared to mean cause (hetu ...

Lymphocystivirus is a genus of viruses, in the family Iridoviridae. Fish serve as natural hosts. There is currently only one species in this genus: the type species Lymphocystis disease virus 1. Diseases associated with this genus include: tumor-like growths on the skin. Lymphocystivirus is one of five genera of viruses within the viral family Iridoviridae, and one of three genera within this family which infect teleost fishes, along with Megalocytivirus and Ranavirus. Lymphocystiviruses infect more than 140 freshwater and marine species, spanning at least 42 host families worldwide, causing the chronic, self-limiting clinical disease, lymphocystis. While lymphocystis does not cause mass mortality events like megalocytiviruses and ranaviruses, fish with lymphocystis exhibit grossly visible papilloma-like skin lesions which substantially reduce their commercial value. No vaccines are currently available for lymphocystis viruses. Group: dsDNA Order: Unassigned Family: Iridoviridae Genus: ...
Relationship of SGIV to other iridoviruses.Conservation of synteny and of gene order can give insights to assess structural conservation among the viral genomes within the family Iridoviridae. Conservation of synteny refers to a pair of genomes in which at least some of the genes are located at similar map positions regardless of the gene order or the presence of intervening genes. When the evolutionary distance is large, scrambling of the gene order and the presence of nonsyntenic intervening genes become frequent (23). Therefore, it is necessary to account for these features when studying iridovirus evolution.. To make comparisons between SGIV and five other iridovirus genomes (ATV, TFV, LCDV, ISKNV, or CIV), we shifted the starting coordinates and set the start codon (ATG) of MCPs as the first base for all viral genomes. We also altered sense and antisense strands on ATV, LCDV, ISKNV, and CIV genomes in order to get the same nucleotide order on MCPs individually. However, none of the ...
The Iridoviridae is a family of large, icosahedral viruses with double-stranded DNA genomes ranging in size from 103 to 220 kbp. Members of the subfamily Alphairidovirinae infect ectothermic vertebrates (bony fish, amphibians and reptiles), whereas members of the subfamily Betairidovirinae mainly infect insects and crustaceans. Infections can be either covert or patent, and in vertebrates they can lead to high levels of mortality among commercially and ecologically important fish and amphibians. This is a summary of the current International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) Report on the taxonomy of the Iridoviridae, which is available at www.ictv.global/report/iridoviridae.

Amphibians can evolve increased tolerance to pesticides, but the adaptation can make them more susceptible to parasites, according to a team that includes researchers at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. The research, led by Binghamton University, showed that wood frogs that evolved increased tolerance to pesticides showed greater susceptibility to a dangerous virus, although they also demonstrated reduced susceptibility to a parasitic worm.. We have only recently begun to understand that amphibians can rapidly evolve tolerance to chemicals like pesticides, which on the surface is good news, said Rick Relyea, a professor of biological sciences and director of the Darrin Fresh Water Institute at Rensselaer. But now comes the bad news: with that tolerance there is a tradeoff, which is that they become more susceptible to parasites that, in the case of ranavirus, can wipe out entire amphibian populations.. Previous research, led by Jessica Hua, a Binghamton University assistant professor, with ...

WEDNESDAY, Feb. 15, 2017 (HealthDay News) - For patients undergoing combined esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) and colonoscopy with propofol sedation, shorter runway time is associated with better quality colon cleansing, according to a study published online Feb. 11 in the Journal of Digestive Diseases.. Alaa Alghamry, from The Prince Charles Hospital in Chermside, Australia, and colleagues prospectively recruited 892 consecutive patients undergoing simultaneous EGD and colonoscopy. At EGD they recorded residual gastric volume (RGV) and pH of gastric content, followed by colonoscopy.. The researchers found that shorter runway time correlated with better quality of colonoscopy cleansing. The mean runway time was 5.8 ± 2.0 hours and mean RGV was 17.7 ± 19.2 ml. No correlation was seen between RGV, pH, and runway time. For runway times of ≤4.0 and 5.0 hours or ,4.0 and 5.0 hours, respectively, there was no difference in RGV and pH. The mean RGV was 35.9 ± 11.8 ml for the 2 percent of patients ...
The main aim of this work was to identify local adaptation processes in amphibian populations, thereby improving the general understanding of genetics and mechanisms behind the evolution and maintenance of biological diversity. Phenotypic and genetic variation in life-history traits was studied within and between populations common frog (Rana temporaria) populations along a 1600 km transect from southern Sweden to northern Finland.. Embryonic and larval development and growth was investigated both under field and laboratory conditions. The results suggest ample genetic diversity in larval life-history traits among Fennoscandian common frog populations. Larval developmental rate along the gradient has evolved a countergradient variation pattern of genotypes and phenotypes as indicated by the positive relationship between developmental rate and latitude under laboratory conditions and the lack of such a relationship in the field. The data suggest that this pattern has evolved because of time ...

Pain is a meaningful warning signal of our body. It shows if something isnt correct and protects our organism from harmful influences of the outside. Long continuous pain or pain without a direct influence have lost its meaning, however, and must be treated.. The first treatment using electrical current was carried out around 2500 BC in Egypt. At that time they used electric sheatfish for the treatment of pain relief. The results obtained from this treatment were quite astonishing bearing in mind that science concluded the physiological basis for this treatment in the 19th century.. The Gate-Control Theory which was first published by Melzack and Wall in the 20th century formed the basis for the neurophysiological understanding and the first treatment of pain relief with the aid of highly frequenced TENS as it is applied today. TENS as a scientifically recognised method for pain relief therapy is a suitable aid for pain for many doctors. The stimulating electrical current impulses being ...
