We identified four properties that reduced N-channel Po at depolarized voltages. These properties were null sweeps, low Po gating, inactivation, and slow activation. Several of these gating processes behaved in a manner consistent with the modal hypothesis. In particular, null sweeps were significantly clustered in the majority of our single N-channel patches. Clustering of null records has been reported for L-type calcium channels (Hess et al., 1984), skeletal muscle sodium channels (Horn et al., 1994), and N-type calcium channels (Rittenhouse and Hess, 1994). These clustered null sweeps were interpreted to result from a gating mode from which the channel will not open. Such a mode could be represented by a long-lived inactivated state that had a mean dwell time lasting several sweep intervals (4-6 s in our recordings). At the former Fort Ord in Monterey County, California the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is attempting to document changes in amphibian populations by surveying each year. Malignant mesothelioma is an aggressive cancer with limited therapeutic options. Sialic acid-binding lectin isolated from Rana catesbeiana oocytes (cSBL) is a multifunctional protein with anti-cancer activity. The effects of pemetrexed, cisplatin, and cSBL were evaluated in mesothelioma and normal mesothelial cell lines. We evaluated cytotoxicity, apoptosis, caspase-3 cleavage and activation, cell proliferation, cell cycle arrest, and levels of cell cycle proteins in H28 cells treated with pemetrexed, cisplatin, and cSBL alone or in combination. Treatment with cSBL alone was cytotoxic to mesothelioma cells. The anti-cancer effect of cSBL was observed in a broader range of cell lines and exhibited greater cancer cell selectivity than pemetrexed or cisplatin. Combination treatment with pemetrexed + cSBL resulted in greater dose-dependent cytotoxicity than pemetrexed + cisplatin, the standard of care in mesothelioma. Bullfrogs have recently expanded into the main reservoir and are now extremely common in Crab Creek beaver ponds and in ponds near Job Corp Dike, which is at the NW corner of the reservoir. There were none in 2002, but tadpoles starting showing up in traps in 2006, and 2009 was the first year I observed adult and juveniles widespread throughout the region.
