The U.S. Railroad Retirement Board (RRB) is an independent agency in the executive branch of the United States government created in 1935 to administer a social insurance program providing retirement benefits to the countrys railroad workers. The RRB serves U.S. railroad workers and their families, and administers retirement, survivor, unemployment, and sickness benefits. Consequently, railroad workers do not participate in the United States Social Security program. The RRBs headquarters are in Chicago, Illinois, with field offices throughout the country. In connection with the retirement program, the RRB has administrative responsibilities under the Social Security Act for certain benefit payments and railroad workers Medicare coverage. During fiscal year 2009, retirement survivor benefits of some $10.5 billion were paid to about 589,000 beneficiaries, while net unemployment-sickness benefits of $160 million, including over $10 million in temporary extended unemployment benefits under the ...

Good evening, I came across this story that appeared in the Mid Sussex Times and its truly heart-rending. A ten-year-old boy with a terminal illness has been granted his wish of a life time - to become a train driver for the day. When he was born Daniel Bainbridge from Abingdon, was diagnosed with neurofibromatosis,…

There is evidence to suggest that the presence of a transit system can influence and shape the crime patterns of urban areas (Piza and Kennedy,2003). On transit systems a range of potential mechanisms can be identified for theft offences. Firstly, transit systems cluster people together at fixed locations in restricted spaces (Brantingham et al. 1991). Theft levels are greatest at transit stops and stations with higher passenger densities and this has been consistently found over a number of years (Smith and Clarke, 2000;Smith and Cornish, 2006, Newton,2014). Indeed, Loukaitou-Sideris (1999) adapted Angels 1968 idea of a critical zone of population density beyond which violent crime may occur, and suggested that on transit systems a second critical zone of intensity may exist. If reached, this critical point may be sufficiently high to mask and therefore promote less serious offences such as theft. Smith and Clarke (2000) suggest that while robbery and violent offences may be linked to a lack ...
WASHINGTON, DC - April 24, 2013 - The microbial population in the air of the New York City subway system is nearly identical to that of ambient air on the city streets. This research, published ahead of print in the journal Applied and Environmental Microbiology, establishes an important baseline, should it become necessary to monitor the subways air for dispersal of potentially dangerous microbes. Also, the combination of new methodologies in the study, including fast collection of aerosols and rapid sequencing technology, provide an efficient means for monitoring which was not previously available.

Some 13 million gallons of water enters the subway system every day, from precipitation, intrusion of groundwater and even the water we use to power clean platforms. But the serious threat of virus carrying mosquitos makes it even more important to we have clean, functioning drains, and adequate pump equipment, aggressive inspection and pumping schedules to remove standing water," Tom Prendergast, MTA Chairman and CEO said.. The Zika plan for NYCs subways follows a Sunday report in the New York Post, which said the "warm, wet summer and mild winter" was causing a jump in mosquitoes.. In addition to Zika concerns, the Post brought up West Nile, which has already reached the region.. "The subway system is likely infested with Culex pipien mosquitoes, which are often found breeding in foul and stinky stagnant pools of water, said Tom Daniels of Fordham Universitys biological research center. The breed tested positive for West Nile Virus this summer, according to the city Health Department," the ...

Can you hear me now? Cell service is coming to the NYC subway Though its one of the oldest and most complex transit systems in the world,
Mass transit has been part of the urban scene in the United States since the early 19th century. Regular steam ferry service began in New York City in the early 1810s and horse-drawn omnibuses plied city streets starting in the late 1820s. Expanding networks of horse railways emerged by the mid-19th century. The electric streetcar became the dominant mass transit vehicle a half century later. During this era, mass transit had a significant impact on American urban development. Mass transits importance in the lives of most Americans started to decline with the growth of automobile ownership in the 1920s, except for a temporary rise in transit ridership during World War II. In the 1960s, congressional subsidies began to reinvigorate mass transit and heavy-rail systems opened in several cities, followed by light rail systems in several others in the next decades. Today concerns about environmental sustainability and urban revitalization have stimulated renewed interest in the benefits of mass transit.
Thats cool... Why is the London Underground map just so cool? And happy? We bought a puzzle of it at the airport as we left because we had a little cash left and figured we should just use it. Maybe I could put it together again and then glue it and put it on the wall. Would that be weird? It would make ME smile anyway. ...
Festiniog railway station served the village of Llan Ffestiniog, Gwynedd, Wales. This station was one of many 19th century institutions in Wales to be given an anglicised name. Over the years, and especially since the Second World War, most have been rendered into Welsh or given both Welsh and English names. Festiniog station closed before this happened. The village of Llan Ffestiniog - known locally simply as "Llan" - lies over 3 km south of the larger and more recent Blaenau Ffestiniog, and over three miles south by rail. The station opened in May 1868 as the southern terminus of the 1 ft 11 3⁄4 in (603 mm) narrow gauge Festiniog and Blaenau Railway (F&BR). The narrow gauge lines primary traffic was passengers, and workmen in particular, with goods traffic small by comparison. Receipts in 1879, for example, included £1409 from passengers against £416 for goods. Slate was brought to the station by packhorse and sled from Drum quarry. One source states that some slate was brought here from ...

Lawrence Livermore National Lab (LLNL) researchers took to the New York City subway system 9-13 May to study how a surrogate for a biological agent, such as anthrax, might disperse throughout the nations largest rapid transit system as a result of a terrorist attack or an accidental release.. LLNL says that as part of a multi-agency test sponsored by the Department of Homeland Security Science and Technology Directorate (S&T), a field team led by LLNL scientist Elizabeth Wheeler supervised the release of a harmless DNA-infused aerosol in Grand Central Terminal and two other major subway hubs, and helped collect environmental samples of the particles.. The data recorded during the study will give scientists a better understanding of the spread of airborne contaminants in the subway system and provide first responders with better pre-planning strategies and risk assessment in the event of an emergency, said LLNLs Associate Program Manager Ellen Raber, who headed the overall effort.. "The goal is ...
Yikes!. As part of a study on subway bacteria, researchers identified 49 unique types of bacteria in the Fordham Rd subway station, which services the B and D lines - and is a busy transit hub for Rose Hill students.. The Weill Cornell Medical Center swabbed the bench and a MetroCard vending machine at the Fordham Rd subway station.. The study, published in the The Wall Street Journal, found that 65 percent of the DNA swabs of the two surfaces had bacteria on them.. Among the bacteria found were species associated with urinary tract infections, sepsis, radiation resistance and Italian cheese - perhaps traveled from the kitchens of Arthur Ave.. The two percent of non-bacterial DNA uncovered was from sources such as insects and green plants. Thirty-two percent of the DNA swabs had unidentified substances on them.. ...

Take a wild ride through the New York City subway system with author Marian Swerdlow, one of the first women subway conductors. In the days when subway cars were canvas for graffiti murals and there were no toilets for women employees, Swerdlow trained in Manhattans underworld of tunnels and learned how to cope with the accompanying dangers and frustrations. Her fascinating insiders account from four years on the job is laden with anecdotes that range from the funny to the painful to the absurd. From her fellow employees, she got grief and harassment, but also camaraderie and love-and a distinct subway lingo that permeates her prose. At all hours of the day and night, New Yorkers in their glorious diversity rode her subway cars. Some spat on her and assaulted her; others were supportive and cheered her on. A white woman in a mostly minority male workplace, Swerdlow helped edit a rank-and-file newsletter, "Hell on Wheels," and tried to organize for better working conditions, confronting the ...

PHILADELPHIA - A man has been arrested on charges he grabbed a woman by the feet and threw her onto the tracks at a Philadelphia subway station, police said. The woman managed to get off the tracks on her own and suffered only minor injuries.. Police announced the arrest Thursday, more than two days after the woman was assaulted around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at a subway station in the citys Chinatown neighborhood. The victim had been sitting on a bench when the man asked her what time the train was coming and requested a light for his cigarette, according to investigators. After she obliged and put the lighter back in her coat pocket, police said, the man grabbed her by the neck and began punching her.. In the assault, which was caught on surveillance video, the man can be seen grabbing the victim by her feet, dragging her along the platform and then throwing her on the tracks as she screamed. The suspect walked away with her cellphone, police said, but the woman was able to get back up onto the ...
For the steam traction, the DFB has several furbished historic steam locomotives. Actually vehiclesof the former Visp-Zermatt Railway (VZ) and the former Furka-Oberalp Railway (FO) are running. Two locomotives of the type HG4/4, which were at that time delivered directly to Vietnam are now overhauled in the workshop of Chur and adapted to the standards of the DFB. They will be the strongest steam engines of the DFB. The DFB has furthermore several diesel locomotives, destined for the track maintenance, for pushing service, fir fighting trains and service train. During summer season the DFB hires a diesel locomotive HGm4/4 and from the Matterhorn-Gotthard railway MGB), destined for the additional trains between Oberwald-Gletsch and for emergency service. For the purposes of preserving historically valuable vehicles, the DFB has taken over the steam rotary snow-plough R12 (ex. RhB). This vehicle is restored in Goldau. The DFB could overtake from the MGB railway two important types of vehicles: A ...

Alexis OHara has developed a cabaret show entitled Limbic Transit System especially for the City of Women festival. It could just as well be called »The Best of Alexis OHara«, and in it she will present the funniest of her cabaret alter-ego characters which despite their being amusing (or maybe precisely because of it) create an electrifying and socially critical atmosphere which triggers embarrassed laughter and the occasional roar. OHara switches characters extremely rapidly, in one instant »a lady« and the next a nun. An insuperable master in the play of voice, she also builds the dramaturgy through the intervention of unusual sounds. OHaras particular speciality is, however, real-time management of electronic sound generators, in addition to which she boasts a remarkable presence and humour communicated via an unpredictable narrative.. Organized by: City of ...

Locomotive - Diesel traction: By the end of the 1960s, diesel had almost completely superseded steam as the standard railroad motive power on nonelectrified lines around the world. The change came first and most quickly in North America, where, during the 25 years 1935-60 (and especially in the period 1951-60), railroads in the United States completely replaced their steam locomotives. What caused the diesel to supersede the steam locomotive so rapidly was the pressure of competition from other modes of transport and the continuing rise in wage costs, which forced the railroads to improve their services and adopt every possible measure to increase operating
I witnessed the pathetic end of a rather sad life today. A young woman killed herself beneath the wheels of a commuter train. Her life ended this afternoon at 12:33, and now some dozen hours later I cannot think of anything else.. Leaping in front of commuter trains is a common method of suicide in this part of Japan. In other parts it is relatively rare from what my friends tell me. Most suicides choose a station with a beautiful view and near a bend so that the train drivers have no warning. As some stations are only served by local trains, these are also more popular as the express trains fly through them - often at speeds approaching sixty miles an hour. On stations where the bullet train pass, they do so on outer, inaccessible rails with tall fences constructed to deter the jumpers.. The young woman chose Tofukuji station on the Keihan line - a station on a bend affording a pleasant view of the eastern mountains of Kyoto. It is also served by local trains only. So at 12:33pm, just before a ...
The New York Times reported today that New York Citys Metropolitan Transit Authority voted 8-0 to change its rules on what advertising it will accept after the furor created by Pamela Gellers anti-Islam ads. Geller, executive director of the American Freedom Defense Initiative, won a court case last month, compelling the MTA to post her ads, which read, In the war between civilized man and the savage, support the civilized man. Support Israel. Defeat Jihad. A wave of public outrage over the ads, which were posted in New York City subway stations, has lead to incidents of vandalism, with activists and angry citizens defacing the posters. On Tuesday, Egyptian-American activist and journalist Mona Eltahawy was arrested for defacing one of the ads with pink spray paint. Ostensibly in response to the vandalism, the MTA stated that they would, from now on, prohibit advertising which would incite or provoke violence or other immediate breach of the peace, and so harm, disrupt, or interfere with ...
LT managers say that the smart cards will reduce queuing at gates and ticket machines because they can be simply flashed close to the gate and will even work from within a wallet or a handbag. They will also reduce fraud, which costs the underground at least £30m a year out of total annual ticket revenues of £1.15 billion. The smart cards will enable the underground to simplify its current complex range of concessionary fares. In the longer term, smart cards offer huge marketing opportunities as they can be used to buy a wide range of other goods and services.. For travellers, too, there should be benefits. A commuter into London will be able to travel on rail, bus and tube using a single card which can include both a normal season ticket and a stored value component. The convenience of not having to fumble for change should be attractive. And if the card is stolen, it can easily be blacklisted because it contains information about the user. Those travellers who dislike having their movements ...
