Interventional radiologists need to be proactive with women, gynecologists, and family healthcare providers about uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) as a treatment option for uterine fibroids. Many women with severe symptoms do not know about the treatment and medical providers are not telling them about it. This was the message of two presenters at the recent annual meeting in Atlanta of the Society for Interventional Radiology (SIR). Interventional radiologists have the ability to make a major impact in the quality of womens lives. An estimated 80% of adult women have uterine fibroids, according to the National Uterine Fibroid Foundation (NUFF) in Colorado Springs. One in four of these women have severe symptoms requiring treatment. Approximately 600,000 hysterectomies are performed annually in the United States, and the NUFF states that between 170,000 to 300,000 of them are because of uterine fibroids. For many cases, UFE offers a minimally invasive alternative without the removal of the uterus and

The first night of the procedure you are on bed rest. For any discomfort, take Ibuprofen or Tylenol. The next day, you will return to the clinic to have your dressing removed and to be placed into a compression stocking. Though you can stand, walk and return to work on the day following surgery, strenuous activity is limited for 2 weeks. You will return for a follow-up visit 4-6 weeks after the procedure.. All of our interventional radiologists are board certified by the American Board of Radiology with Certificates of Advanced Qualification (CAQs) in vascular and interventional radiology. Applications of virtual reality in Interventional Radiology have largely been directed towards development of simulators for teaching and for training in catheterization procedures or for demonstrating specific interventions such as angioplasty, stent placement or intra-arterial drug infusion therapy. Primary advantages of such systems are that they provide the clinician with an opportunity to practice hand-eye coordinated catheter manipulations that previously could only be achieved during actual patient studies or in the animal laboratory. Difficulties with the systems include problems relating to modeling realistic interactions between the catheter and blood vessels and difficulties in providing the clinician with a library of vascular reconstructions demonstrating pathologies from actual patient databases. Also, because the catheterization procedure is so closely linked with imaging equipment, it is a challenge to reproduce the clinical setting insofar as the clinician feels a part of the ...
