Initially, as per the National Lung Screening Trial, eligible patients were those age 55-74, with a 30 pack year (1 pack a day for 30 years, 2 packs a day for 15 years, or some other similar combination of packs per day multiplied by years smoked) history of smoking, either current smokers or those who quit in the last 15 years.. Early this year, data from another more recent study compelled us to revise those criteria, lowering the age of eligibility from 55 to 50 and the number of pack-years smoked to 20. This was because the data demonstrated that doing so would improve the sensitivity of the study, without decreasing the specificity or accuracy. Methods: The Tomophan™ phantom incorporates four stair-stepped missing tissue gauges by the chest wall, allowing measurement of missing chest wall in two different locations along the chest wall at two different heights. Each of the four gauges has 12 steps in 0.5 mm increments rising from the chest wall. An image processing algorithm was developed by Image Owl that first finds the two slices containing the steps then finds the signal through the highest step in all four gauges. PURPOSE: To prospectively evaluate the effects of z-axis spatial resolution and tube current on the sensitivity of a commercially available computed tomographic (CT) colonography computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) system for polyp detection by using pig colon phantoms. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ninety-six polyps were created and analyzed in 14 pig colon phantoms. PURPOSE: To describe prospective ECG-triggered dual-source CT dual-step pulsing (pECG(dual_step)) for evaluation of coronary arteries and cardiac function. METHODS: Fifty-one consecutive patients pre- or post-cardiovascular surgery were examined with adaptive sequential tube current modulated (pECG(dual-step)) 128-slice dual-source CT without heart rate control (main padding window: 40% RR interval ,65 bpm/70% RR interval ,65 bpm). Image quality of coronary arteries was graded (4-point scale), and cardiac function was evaluated. RESULTS: Mean HR was 68 bpm. Thirty-seven patients were in stable sinus rhythm (SR); 14 had arrhythmia. Image quality of coronary arteries was diagnostic in 804/816 (98%) of segments. The number of non-diagnostic segments was higher in patients with arrhythmia as compared to those in SR (4% vs. 0.5%; p = 0.01), and there were fewer segments with excellent image quality (79% vs. 94%; p , 0.001) and more segments with impaired image quality (p , 0.001 and p = 0.002). ...

No technological advance for imaging the thorax has had so profound an impact on the visualization and management of data as multislice CT. Its fast acquisition times and higher resolution have forever changed imaging of the lung, an organ whose dynamic nature demands rapid acquisition and whose complex anatomy demands isotropic resolution for fine anatomic detail and true 3D analysis. MSCT allows shorter breath-holds, fewer breathing and motion artifacts, and reduced contrast delivery for CT angiography studies. The improved anatomic detail clarifies pulmonary anatomy and detects change as an indicator of disease.
