We had conducted a survey on Mean Glandular Dose (MGD) from Full-Field Digital Mammography systems (FFDM) operate using Molybdenum/Molybdenum (Mo/Mo) and Tungsten/Rhodium (W/Rh) target/filter combinations. A survey was carried out at two randomly selected mammography centres in Malaysia, namely National Cancer Society and International Islamic University of Malaysia. The first centre operates using a W/Rh, while the second centre operates using an Mo/Mo target/filter combinations. On the basis of recorded information, data on mammographic views, MGD, age and Compressed Breast Thickness (CBT) were recorded for 100 patients, for each mammographic centre respectively. The MGD data were analyzed for variation with age group, with 5 years increment. The MGD data were also analyzed for variation with CBT, with 5 mm increment. We found that for both CC and MLO views, FFDM systems operated using Mo/Mo and W/Rh target/filter combinations present the same trend on MGD. The average MGD decreases as age ...

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the scatter, dose, and effective detective quantum efficiency (DQE) performance of a slot-scan digital chest radiography system compared with that of a full-field digital radiography system. METHODS: Scatter fraction of a slot-scan system was measured for an anthropomorphic and a geometric phantom by using a posterior beam-stop technique at 117 and 140 kVp. Measurements were repeated with a full-field digital radiography system with and without a 13:1 antiscatter grid at 120 and 140 kVp. For both systems, the effective dose was measured on posteroanterior and lateral views for standard clinical techniques by using dosimeters embedded in a female phantom. The effective DQEs of the two systems were assessed by taking into account the scatter performance and the DQE of each system. The statistical significance of all the comparative differences was ascertained by means of t test analysis. RESULTS: The slot-scan system and the full-field system with grid yielded scatter ...

Low X-Ray Dose Digital Mammography System | SBIR.gov
The long term objective is to develop x-ray systems that will minimize x-ray radiation dose to the patient during clinical diagnosis and routine screening, while maximizing the usefulness of data by applying advanced sensing and signal processing techniques. Near theoretical limit x-ray sensitivity can be achieved with advanced semiconductor detector arrays, so x-ray radiation dose can be reduced by more than an order of magnitude from that required by conventional screen-film systems. The inherently digital output of the detector array is ideally suited for Computed Radiology including electronic archiving and image transmission, image enhancement and analysis, and computer aided diagnosis. During Phase I, there are several specific aims: to produce a preliminary digital mammography system design to determine performance requirements for each of the subsystems; to design, fabricate, and test the critical detector arrays; to address the key detector packaging and system mechanical design issues; ...
SU-E-P-31: Quantifying the Amount of Missing Tissue in a Digital Breast Tomosynthesis (Journal Article) | SciTech Connect
Purpose: To automatically quantify the amount of missing tissue in a digital breast tomosynthesis system using four stair-stepped chest wall missing tissue gauges in the Tomophan™ from the Phantom Laboratory and image processing from Image Owl. Methods: The Tomophan™ phantom incorporates four stair-stepped missing tissue gauges by the chest wall, allowing measurement of missing chest wall in two different locations along the chest wall at two different heights. Each of the four gauges has 12 steps in 0.5 mm increments rising from the chest wall. An image processing algorithm was developed by Image Owl that first finds the two slices containing the steps then finds the signal through the highest step in all four gauges. Using the signal drop at the beginning of each gauge the distance to the end of the image gives the length of the missing tissue gauge in millimeters. Results: The Tomophan™ was imaged in digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) systems from various vendors resulting in 46 cases ...

Breast cancer Ki-67 expression prediction by digital breast tomosynthesis radiomics features | European Radiology Experimental ...
To investigate whether quantitative radiomic features extracted from digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) are associated with Ki-67 expression of breast cancer. This is a prospective ethically approved study of 70 women diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in 2018, including 40 low Ki-67 expression (Ki-67 proliferation index |14%) cases and 30 high Ki-67 expression (Ki-67 proliferation index ≥ 14%) cases. A set of 106 quantitative radiomic features, including morphological, grey/scale statistics, and texture features, were extracted from DBT images. After applying least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) method to select the most predictive features set for the classifiers, low versus high Ki-67 expression was evaluated by the area under the curve (AUC) at receiver operating characteristic analysis. Correlation coefficient was calculated for the most significant features. A combination of five features yielded AUC of up to 0.698. The five most predictive features (sphericity,

Accuracy of GE digital breast tomosynthesis versus supplementary mammographic views for diagnosis of screen-detected soft...
Women recalled for further assessment of soft tissue abnormalities were recruited and received standard supplementary views (typically spot compression views) and two-view GE DBT. The added value of DBT in the assessment process was determined by analysing data collected prospectively by unblinded radiologists working up the cases.. Following anonymisation of cases, there was also a retrospective multireader review. The readers first read bilateral standard two-view digital mammography (DM) together with the supplementary mammographic views and gave a combined score for suspicion of malignancy on a five-point scale. The same readers then read bilateral standard two-view DM together with two-view DBT. Pathology data were obtained. Differences were assessed using ROC analysis. ...

Title: Screening outcomes following implementation of digital breast tomosynthesis in a general-population screening program.. Journal: J Natl Cancer Inst 106(11):-. Date: 2014 Nov. Abstract: BACKGROUND: Early data on breast cancer screening utilizing digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) combined with digital mammography (DM) have shown improvements in false-positive and false-negative screening rates compared with DM alone. However, these trials were performed at sites where conventional mammographic screening was concurrently performed, possibly leading to selection biases or with complex, multireader algorithms not reflecting general clinical practice. Our study reports the impact on screening outcomes for DBT screening implemented in an entire clinic population. METHODS: Recall rates, cancer detection, and positive predictive values of screening were compared for 15571 women screened with DBT and 10728 ...

Patent US5696850 - Automatic image sharpening in an electronic imaging system - Google Patents
Digital reproductions of any size made from images scanned from film or taken by an electronic camera are optimally sharpened in a system-wide operation. The images are captured by an imaging device having an electronic imager and subsequently reproduced in a reproduction device, both imaging and reproduction devices having respective modulation transfer functions. Initially, the imaging device modulation transfer function and the reproduction device modulation transfer function are stored in separate devices. After an image is captured with the imaging device, a system modulation transfer function is generated from the imaging device modulation transfer function and the reproduction device modulation transfer function. Then a sharpening function is generated from the system modulation transfer function and the sharpening filter function is applied to the image captured by the imaging device in order to sharpen the image.

Tomosynthesis, the 3D imaging technology, is offered in both our Concord and Westford locations. Tomosynthesis addresses a long-standing imaging challenge. The breast must be compressed during a mammogram in order to turn the three-dimensional structure into a two-dimensional image through which abnormalities may be detected. However, dense breasts can have overlapping tissue that causes image distortion, potentially resulting in a false positive and associated anxiety from having to return for a repeat mammogram. In fact, studies show that tomosynthesis reduces the patient callback rate by up to 40 percent. Tomosynthesis takes approximately four seconds longer per view while in compression than a mammogram. The exam exposes patients to slightly more radiation, but is still below government safety guidelines.. ...

Digital Breast Tomosynthesis Versus Digital Mammography: A National Multicenter Trial - Full Text View - ClinicalTrials.gov
This prospective national multicenter multivendor trial aims at determining the impact of the novel technique Digital Breast Tomosynthesis (DBT) in the assessment and screening for breast cancer. Mammography is the primary imaging modality for the early detection of clinically occult breast cancer.. Despite advances in mammographic technique, mammography is still limited with regard to both sensitivity and specificity. In the majority of cases these limitations arise from the masking of subtle breast cancer lesions by overlapping breast tissue.. DBT is a novel technique that tries to overcome these limitations by performing a 3D-reconstruction of breast tissue from multiple low-dose digital mammographic images acquired in several planes in a 15 to 50 degree angle.. Early studies indicate an advantage of DBT compared to the standard Full Field Digital Mammography (FFDM) in terms of an improvement of specificity without cutback in sensitivity.. Controversy continues over the use of DBT in ...
Detective quantum efficiency of medical x-ray image intensifiers
The recognition of small features of low contrast in the image recorded by an x-ray image intensifier is usually limited by photon noise. This detail-contrast perceptibility is dependent on the detective quantum efficiency (DQE) and the modulation transfer function of the imaging tube and associated scanning system. The DQE can be calculated for all input photon energies from the statistical behaviour of each stage of photon detection and amplification where quanta are lost or converted. The potential improvement to be obtained from any proposed design change can be estimated. The escape of characteristic photons from the input phosphor layer causes significant change to the performance particularly when gadolinium oxysulphide is employed for that purpose ...

The Diagnostic Efficacy of Computer-Aided Detection (CAD) in Full-Field Digital Mammography (FFDM)- A Prospective Study - Full...
Mammography is currently the only documented effective imaging tool for breast cancer screening. However, the sensitivity of mammography may be reduced in dense breasts, and sometimes it is difficult to even perceive a very subtle cancer which presents as a small stellate lesion, or very faint microcalcifications, missed diagnosed thus occurs. Herein, some researchers in Western countries developed computer-aided detection (CAD) system to help radiologists detect subtle, easily overlooked findings to facilitate early breast cancer detection, and most of the research regarding CAD was used in screen-film mammography (SFM) system. Ikeda, et al, worked on the retrospective CAD usage of those negative mammograms which later developed breast cancers. CAD could correctly mark 40% of the areas on these mammograms reported negative previously that later developed evident cancers. However, 80% of these are only nonspecific findings, and do not warrant recall for additional workup even at retrospective ...

Quantitative tool for quality control of computed radiography systems | (1996) | Bogucki | Publications | Spie
The goal of computed radiography (CR) acceptance testing is to establish the storage phosphor reader and phosphor screen baseline performance. Quality control testing then detects changes in the CR system that could affect radiographic image quality. These tests currently require multiple exposures that are laser printed on film, and evaluated subjectively and using optical density measurements. Soft copy digital images have rarely been used to characterize CR systems. This paper presents an automated test target for the acceptance and quality control testing of Kodak storage phosphor readers. By using digital images for testing, the CR system can be evaluated independent of laser printer, film, and film processing effects ...

OSA | Noise-suppressed image enhancement using multiscale top-hat selection transform through region extraction
Enhancing an image through increasing the contrast of the image is one effective way of image enhancement. To well enhance an image and suppress the produced noises in the resulting image, a multiscale top-hat selection transform-based algorithm through extracting bright and dark image regions and increasing the contrast between them is proposed. First, the multiscale top-hat selection transform is discussed and then is used to extract the bright and dark image regions of each scale. Second, the final extracted bright and dark image regions are obtained through a maximum operation on all the extracted multiscale bright and dark image regions at all scales. Finally, by using a weight strategy, the image is enhanced through increasing the contrast of the image by adding the final bright regions on and subtracting the final dark regions from the original image. The weight parameters are used to adjust the effect of image enhancement. Because the multiscale top-hat selection transform is used to ...
Parodying the film noir detective film | ComedyU
Of course, this genre can be used within the Genre Options game; however, this is a difficult game, and even many experienced improvisors cant play it well. A better strategy is to perform a complete detective scene. You might ask the audience for a title (The Big [blank]), and then perform that title in the detective genre. This allows you to concentrate on this genre, rather than trying to practice the many genres required for Genre Options.. The constant first-person narration usually found in the detective mystery (I went inside. I didnt like what I saw . . . etc.) makes it ideal for Typewriter Scenes, where the player on the microphone provides the detectives narration, and another player plays the on-stage detective. (If you are doing a detective scene without an off-stage narrator, the improvisor playing the detective should frequently switch to narrator mode, delivering narrative directly to the audience.). Something that is rarely seen on stage, but which should work well is to use ...

Beamline R and D
During the last year the image intensifier CCD detector developed at the ESRF [1] has been converted from a laboratory prototype to a routinely used detector system for diffraction experiments that produces useful data of high quality.. The image intensifier CCD system covers the energy range 6 - 30 keV with a detective quantum efficiency above 80 %, providing artefact free images of spatial resolution , 200 µm. The useful input field in the corrected flat field image has a diameter of about 185 mm. The optical image produced by the image intensifier is relayed in the standard set-up onto commercially available slow scan CCD cameras of typically 1000 x 1000 pixel resolution, which provide a signal dynamic range , 50,000 for an image read-out time £ 10 seconds.. These cameras are almost always controlled by PCs and their associated software, whereas the beamline control software package (SPEC) is operating on UNIX workstations. In order to operate the CCD cameras from SPEC, the controller card ...

A histogram specification technique for dark image enhancement using a local transformation method | IPSJ Transactions on...
Traditional image enhancement techniques produce different types of noise such as unnatural effects, over-enhancement, and artifacts, and these drawbacks become more prominent in enhancing dark images. To overcome these drawbacks, we propose a dark image enhancement technique where local transformation of the pixels have been performed. Here, we apply a transformation method of different parts of the histogram of an input image to get a desired histogram. Afterwards, histogram specification technique has been done on the input image using this transformed histogram. The performance of the proposed technique has been evaluated in both qualitative and quantitative manner, which shows that the proposed method improves the quality of the image with minimal unexpected artifacts as compared to the other techniques.

CMLT C217 1122 Detective, Mystery & Horror Literature
Section meets COAS Arts & Humanities requirement Class Meets: MWF 11:15-12:05 BH208 Edgar Allan Poe not only wrote some of our finest tales of terror, but also practically invented the genre of analytic detective fiction. His literary career suggests that these two literary forms are in some way connected, and that what links them is a fascination with or before the unknown. By examining the ways in which various writers of detective and horror fiction manipulate their readers (as well as the reader s role in the creation of such texts), we will investigate the connection between mystery and horror. We will ask ourselves: Why do we like to be frightened, at least in literature? What purpose does a detective serve for his or her author and reader? What are the similarities between the criminals of detective fiction (and its detectives!) and the monsters of horror fiction? We will focus on texts in which horror and mystery are combined and consider the detective figures and writing strategies of ...

Contrast-enhanced digital mammography comparable to breast MRI after therapy or chemo
Our study aimed to compare contrast-enhanced mammography with breast MRI in evaluating residual breast cancer in patients undergoing presurgical systemic treatment to shrink their tumour size, says Bhavika Patel, M.D., a radiologist at Mayo Clinics Arizona campus. We identified patients who had both contrast-enhanced digital mammography and MRI after treatment to shrink their tumours and before additional therapy or a mastectomy.. Dr. Patel and her colleagues conducted a retrospective review of contrast-enhanced digital mammography cases at Mayo Clinics Arizona campus between September 2014 and June 2016. Forty female patients met inclusion criteria. The mean age of study participants was 52.3 years. Thirty-four patients received chemotherapy, and six patients received endocrine therapy.. Researchers interpreted radiographic images in a blinded fashion and compared residual size on imaging to pathology from surgical samples. Their results indicated that both imaging modalities demonstrate ...
Gadolinium - Big Chemical Encyclopedia
A typical RTR system consists of a image intensifier, CCD camera, image processor and high resolution TV monitor in addition to radiographic source. Image intensifiers used in X-radiography employ Csl as the input detector. With the increased use of neutrons as radiation source, real time neutron radiography is also being practised widely. Image intensifiers used in neutron radiography employ gadolinium as the input screen. Typical resolutions attainable with present day X-ray and neutron image intensifiers is of the order 45 Ip/cm in the nornial mode. It is well known that rare earth screens such as gadolinium oxysulphide are sensitive to photons as well. While such screens have been used in fluoroscopy, no systematic study has been made to evaluate their potential usage for real time applications using X-rays. One possible reason for this could be due to their non-linear response over the X-ray energy range. A systematic study was undertaken by the authors to study the resolution and ...
X-Ray Detector Market Overview | Industry Research Report 2021 By Hexa Reports | Goa Headlines
X-Ray Detectors are basically those instruments that are employed to gauge the flux, spatial distribution, spectrum, and the other related characteristics of X-Rays. They can be segregated into two major types imaging detectors and dose measurement devices. The analog X-Ray systems normally employ photographic plates and films for image detection. Nevertheless, as there has been a shift in technology from analog to digital X-ray systems, the photographic plates and films are have been substituted by digital image plates that are itself the flat panel detectors.. Flat panel detectors are said to be highly sensitive and they are much faster than a photographic film. As technology and demand for digital X-Ray systems is reaching great heights, the X-ray detectors will call for much stronger structure possessing high transmission capability, temperature endurance, as well as resistance to ionizing radiations. Market size on the basis of type spans flat panel detectors, charge coupled device (CCD) ...

Novel mammographic image features differentiate between interval and screen-detected breast cancer: a case-case study | Breast...
All analysis was based on digitized film mammograms. Analysis was based on the last pre-diagnostic mammographic image per woman, using the mediolateral oblique view of the breast contralateral to the future tumor. To avoid image acquisition bias related to suspected or diagnosed cancer we did not consider mammograms that were acquired later than 30 days before diagnosis. PD values were calculated by an automated ImageJ-based method developed and validated by Li et al. in 2012 [18]. This method attempts to mimic the outcome of the gold standard area-based PD measurement method, Cumulus [19], and a high correlation (r = 0.884) between the two methods was demonstrated.. Our aim was to study features of the dense area in the mammograms, which were obtained by three processing steps: pre-processing of the image, dense area selection, and feature extraction. First, the images were pre-processed by automatically removing nametags and other artifacts, as well as reducing contrast intensity differences ...
A Context Aware Automatic Image Enhancement Method Using Color Transfer - SAE International
Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) have become an inevitable part of most of the modern cars. Their use is mandated by regulations in some cases; and in other cases where vehicle owners have become more safety conscious. Vision / camera based ADAS systems are widely in use today. However, it is to be noted that the performance of these systems is depends on the quality of the image/video captured by the camera. Low illumination is one of the most important factors which degrades image quality. In order to improve the system performance under low illumination, it is required to first enhance the input images/frames. In this paper, we propose an image enhancement algorithm that would automatically enhance images to a near ideal condition. This is accomplished by mapping features taken from images acquired under ideal illumination conditions on to the target low illumination images/frames.The proposed method consists of four steps a) Pre- processing b) a coarse level segmentation of the ...
Brevet US5517687 - Subharmonic image rejection and image enhancement mixer - Google Brevets
A subharmonic image rejection and image enhancement mixer for mixing millimeter wavelength signals using a low conversion loss technique is described. A local oscillator frequency from an external source is fed to a first subharmonic mixer and through a phase shifter to a second subharmonic mixer. The phase shifter delays the local oscillator signal by (90 /n), where n is the multiple of the subharmonic mixers and is greater than 1. The first and second subharmonic mixers mix the local oscillator frequency with an input signal, which includes a desired frequency and an image frequency, to produce an intermediate frequency having a desired component and an image component at a select phase. A 0 -90 hybrid separates and terminates the image component of the intermediate frequency. The input port that feeds the input signal to each subharmonic mixer is dimensioned so as to provide a virtual image short termination or an image short termination to a self-generated image signal from each subharmonic mixer,
All you need to know about the C-Arm X-Ray Machines - Trivitron Blog
A C-Arm machine categorizes itself as an advanced medical imaging device that works on the basic premise of the X-ray technology. They are fluoroscopy machines and are colloquially called as image intensifiers. However, technically, the image intensifier is only a part of the machine and it is called a detector. C-Arm gets its name from the C-shaped arm present in the device, which is used to connect the x-ray source and the detector. These C-Arm machines are widely used during orthopedic, complicated surgical, pain management (Anesthetics) and emergency procedures. Its Fluoroscopy technology enables the device to provide high-resolution X-ray images in real time so that the surgeons can monitor the progress of the procedure and take decisions accordingly. It is a non-invasive device, making it safe both during and after the screening procedures.. What is an X-ray image intensifier? ...

Low-light image enhancement using multi-layer fusion and detail recover | (2018) | Chen | Publications | Spie
Due to contrast deficiency and blurred details in some low-light images, this paper presents a low-light image enhancement method using multi-layer fusion and detail recovery. Firstly, V channel in HSV color space is copied to three layers: Retinex layer, brightness layer and detail layer. In Retinex layer, the combination of weighted guided image filtering and morphology eliminates halo phenomenon. Meanwhile brightness and details of images are enhanced by the improved Retinex. Adaptive normalization is adopted to enhance brightness further in brightness layer. In detail layer, the improved model of local linear is to obtain more details. Finally, a detail recovery based on pixel arrangement is performed to avoid partial fuzzy details caused fusion. Experimental results show that the proposed method can more effectively highlight image details and improve the contrast ...
3D Mammography (Tomosynthesis) | Diagnostic Center for Women
3D Mammography, clinically known as, Digital Breast Tomosynthesis (DBT), obtains multiple images of the breast and reconstructs them to create a 3D image of the breast rather than a single image. This technology improves the detection of small cancers and has been shown to reduce the number of patients recalled for more imaging due to false positives. This is used for screening patients, and can also be utilized as an additional screening tool if a patients 2-D mammogram shows dense breast tissue. ...
