TY - JOUR. T1 - Parathyroid Hormone (1-34) Might Not Improve Early Bone Healing after Sinus Augmentation in Healthy Rabbits. AU - Huh, Jisun. AU - Jung, Ui Won. AU - Park, Kyeong Mee. AU - Kim, Hyun Sil. AU - Kim, Kee Deog. AU - Park, Wonse. PY - 2017. Y1 - 2017. N2 - Purpose. This study evaluated the effect of administering intermittent parathyroid hormone [PTH (1-34), henceforth PTH] on the early-stage bone healing of maxillary sinus augmentation in healthy rabbits. Materials and Methods. Bovine bone mineral was grafted on the sinuses of 20 female New Zealand white rabbits. The animals were randomly divided into two groups, PTH (n=10) or saline (n=10), in which either PTH or saline was injected subcutaneously 5 days a week for 2 weeks. Half of the animals in each group were killed at 2 weeks postoperatively and the other half were killed at 4 weeks postoperatively. The dosage of PTH was 10 μg/kg/day. Radiographic and histomorphometric analyses were performed. Result. The new bone area (NBA) ...
Abstract: : Purpose: To propose a model of late onset diffuse lamellar keratitis(DLK) that is observed after chemical or mechanical corneal injury in patients with previous laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK). Methods: Corneal flaps were created in eight eyes from four White New Zealand Rabbits. The flaps were reflected and then repositioned and allowed to heal for two weeks. One eye of each rabbit was then given either a chemical (0.5N NaOH) or mechanical epithelial injury with the contralateral eye serving as control. Corneas were then harvested one day after the injury was created for microscopic analysis. Results: Histopathalogical analysis of sections from corneas that sustained mechanical injury show focal aggregates of heterophils, macrophages, and mild corneal edema at the flap-stromal interface. After chemical injury, in addition to heterophils and macrophages, focal and subepithelial aggregates of fibroblasts and myxomatous stromal changes were observed at the flap-stromal interface. ...

Never release a pet rabbit outside. Releasing a domestic animal into the wild is a crime. Unfortunately, every year, thousands of rabbit guardians decide to abandon their pets in the great outdoors. They may believe the rabbit can survive and thrive in the wild but this is an inaccurate and deadly assumption.. Out of the many different types of rabbits and hares the only rabbit to be widely domesticated is the European rabbit (genus Oryctolagus). Although we see a wide variety of sizes, colors and body shapes, all of our pet rabbits are descended from these European rabbits.. The European rabbit is a different genus from our native Eastern cottontail rabbits, Desert cottontail, Marsh rabbit, or Swamp Rabbit (all genus Sylvilagus) or hares and jackrabbits (genus Lepus) and can not successfully breed with these other rabbits.. There are many differences between European rabbits and Eastern cottontail rabbits but perhaps the most important difference is this: European rabbits have been selectively ...
Tissue factor (TF) is a transmembrane protein that binds factor VII/VIIa, thus activating the extrinsic blood coagulation pathway. Since this pathway appears to be involved in the formation of intravascular thrombi, the anti-rabbit TF monoclonal antibody, AP-1, was produced and tested as an antithrombotic agent in a rabbit model of recurrent intravascular thrombosis. In this model, a plastic constrictor is positioned around the injured rabbit carotid arteries, and flow is monitored with a Doppler flow probe. This produces cyclic flow variation (CFV) in the carotid artery, which is caused by recurrent formation and dislodgment of thrombi at the site of the stenosis. After monitoring CFV pattern for 30 minutes, AP-1 was infused intravenously into nine rabbits at doses of 0.05 to 1.5 mg/kg body weight, and a control monoclonal antibody that does not react with rabbit TF was infused into four additional rabbits. In all rabbits receiving AP-1, CFV was abolished, and a steady normal blood flow was ...
Since the earliest days of the Internet, rabbits and all things rabbit have been flourishing online. A Google search of rabbit in mid-2008 led to 114 million hits, with the House Rabbit Societys website, www.rabbit.org, as number one.. Rabbits have, in fact, been a force on the Internet since the earliest public use of the new technology. Rabbit.org for example, was created in 1994, and attracts about 50,000 visitors per day to learn about rabbit care and behavior, and to view the bunny pictures on our Rabbit Randomizer page), which is, oddly, our most popular page. Listserves such as Etherbun, Petbunny, and in the 1990s, newsgroups like alt.pets.rabbits allow rabbit lovers from around the world to chat with each other about rabbit issues, and the Bunderground Railroad, run by RabbitWise in Maryland, is a virtual system of volunteers who transport rabbits across the country to aid rescue groups. Thanks to the immediacy of online communication, life-and-death health information, emergency ...
We studied the effects of hypercholesterolemia on the vascular responses of proximal and distal parts of the rabbit coronary circulation in two consecutive studies. For 12 weeks, New Zealand White rabbits were fed a control diet or a diet with 1% cholesterol dissolved in either 3% coconut oil (study A) or ether (study B). Isolated proximal epicardial and distal intramyocardial coronary arteries from control and hypercholesterolemic rabbits were mounted for isometric tension recording in a double myograph. In study A for hypercholesterolemic rabbits (n = 12), the maximal relaxation and sensitivity to acetylcholine (ACh) were significantly decreased in proximal coronary segments contracted with 30 mmol/l potassium solution compared with segments from control rabbits (n = 13). The only change observed in distal coronary segments was a slight decrease in relaxation in response to low ACh concentrations (10(-8) and 3 x 10(-8) mol/l). However, in study B for proximal coronary and distal coronary ...
Oleh : Nurjaman. Thymus gland is the important organ in immunity, especially in producing lymphocyte T cells. Prostaglandin is an antigenic substance that functions as a mitogen.. The aim of this to determine the influence of Prostaglandin as mitogen on the thymus gland of aged male rabbits and young male rabbits.. Forty male rabbits were divided into two groups, the firs group consists of twenty aged male rabbits and the second group consists of twenty young rabbits . The twenty aged rabbits were divided randomly into two groups (group I = 10 rabbits, group II = 10 rabbits). The twenty young rabbits were divided randomly into two groups (group I = 10 rabbits, group II = 10 rabbits). Before the experiment began, all rabbits were observed for one week for adaptation. After adaptation all rabbits were injected with prostaglandin intra musculary, 1.5 mg for each aged rabbit and 0.75 mg for each young rabbit. One week after injection all rabbits of group I (aged and young rabbits) were killed and ...

Purpose: : Purpose of this study was to examine the efficacy of UV filter in eye drops (Item T1558) on the rabbit cornea irradiated with UVB rays. Methods: : Adult New Zealand white rabbits were employed in our experiments. In the first group of rabbits corneas of both eyes were irradiated with UVB rays (312 nm, a dose per day 1.01 J/cm2), in the second group of animals with UVB rays (312 nm, a dose per day 0.5 J/cm2). In both groups of rabbits the irradiation took place once a day for four days. During the irradiation, the Item T1558 (UV filter) was dropped on the right eye and buffered saline on the left eye. After the end of irradiation (on day four) the animals were left without any treatment for one day and sacrificed (on day five). The central corneal thickness was measured by Pachymeter SP-100 (Tomey Co., Japan) in all rabbits, always before irradiation and also on day five before killing the animals. After the death of animals the corneal centers (a circle of 6 mm diameter) were examined ...
Can this antibody be purchased biotinylated? If so, then you can work with it in the same way as mouse on mouse kits with rabbit serum instead of mouse serum added, not so much fun. However, there was a publication in Lab Vision, a now defunct journal and this method is also in Gus Analytical Morphology book, from Biotechniques for doing rabbit on rabbit IHC. The Xenon technology sounds much easier and readily available. Macrophage class A scavenger receptor types I and II (SR-AI and II) mediate the uptake of oxidized LDL in atherosclerotic lesions. The recently described type III receptor (SR-AIII), which lacks amino acids encoded by exon 10 of the SR-A gene, is unable to mediate the uptake of ligands and acts as a dominant negative regulator in the trimeric SR-A molecule. To find out whether SR-AIII might play a role in the regulation of SR-A activity in the arterial wall, we studied its expression in normal and atherosclerotic aortic intima-medias of Watanabe heritable hyperlipidemic (WHHL) and cholesterol-fed New Zealand white (NZW) rabbits. SR-A mRNA was amplified by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) with a SR-AIII-specific primer pair and with a primer pair suitable for both SR-AI and III. Very low SR-AI expression and no SR-AIII expression was found in the lesion-free aortic intima-medias of WHHL rabbits and control NZW rabbits. WHHL rabbit fatty streaks contained abundant SR-AI expression

Methods Fifty male New Zealand white rabbits were randomly divided into five groups (n = 10 each). The rabbits in the normal group were fed with normal diet, while rabbits in model group and drug treatment groups were fed with high cholesterol, then receiving injury of the left carotid artery adventitia with digestion and blunt dissenction, meanwhile the contralateral ones were treated as sham operation. After establishment of atherosclerotic rabbit model, the rabbits were treated with atorvastatin or different dosage of Banxiao for 16 weeks according to the protocol. At the end, serum lipid and relative gene expressions in different tissues were investigated with FPLC and qPCR. And immunohistochemical analysis of carotid arteries were also evaluated.. ...
So much to learn, so little time! I recently did a guest appearance on Wisconsin Public Radio and didnt do a very good job answering a question about a rabbit who pottied on the couch instead of its litter box. Thanks to an alert listener and member of the Wisconsin House Rabbit Society, Ive learned a lot since. And I have to admit I find it fascinating. You all know Im an animal behavior addict, whether its dogs or donkeys or doodle bugs, and I even had rabbits for a time, so Im gratified to learn more about them.. Im not proud of my own efforts at rabbit husbandry. It was a very, very long time ago, before I knew much at all about animals and animal behavior, and the rabbits lived outside in a cage in a building. Granted, it was warm and safe, but one of the most important things I now know about rabbits is that rabbits are like dogs in that they are highly social and inquisitive. Keeping a rabbit in a cage outside with little social interaction is no life for a rabbit. (Thank heavens we ...

To evaluate the in vivo and in vitro toxicity of a new formulation of liposome-encapsulated sirolimus (LES). In vitro experiments were done using ARPE-19 and HRP cells. An MTT assay was used to determine cell metabolic activity and a TUNEL assay for detecting DNA fragmentation. In vivo experiments were conducted on New Zealand albino rabbits that received intravitreal injections of empty liposomes (EL) or different concentrations of LES. Histopathological and immunohistochemical analyses were performed on the rabbits eyes following injection. Eighteen eyes of nine rabbits were used. MTT assay cell viability was 95.04% in group 1 (12.5 µL/mL LES). 92.95% in group 2 (25 µL/mL LES), 91.59% in group 3 (50 µL/mL LES), 98.09% in group 4 (12.5 µL/mL EL), 95.20% on group 5 (50 µL/mL EL), 98.53% in group 6 (50 µL/mL EL), and 2.84% on group 8 (50 µL/mL DMSO). There was no statistically significant difference among groups 1 to 7 in cell viability (p = 1.0), but the comparison of all groups with group 8 was

Lest you doubt the passion involved, OPB couldnt get the city manager or Mayor Sam Steidel to talk on the record about the rabbit situation. At a recent City Council meeting, he suggested hes thinking about regulating the animals as pets.. We could say if somebody wants to keep rabbits, they get hutches and they do things properly, he said. Otherwise these are wild critters that need to be, in an infestation situation, eradicated. However we can figure that out.. Eradication or hutching are both reasonable solutions, said Dana Sanchez, a wildlife specialist with the Oregon State University Extension Service. The rabbits may seem like pets to some neighbors, she said, but they are considered feral.. Generally our pet rabbits are from a completely different species than the native rabbits that we see bounding around in the habitat, she said.. Sanchez predicted that a cold winter would greatly reduce their numbers. But adult rabbits can give birth once a month, to an average of six babies. ...
The American Rabbit is a breed of rabbit, recognized by the American Rabbit Breeders Association (ARBA) in 1917. By the ARBA standard, American rabbits have a mandolin body shape and a coat ideal for use as fur. It has also been noted for a good sweet temperament and good mothering abilities. As with all domestic rabbits, the American breed is of the species Oryctolagus cuniculus, the European wild rabbit. The American Rabbit was originally accepted into the ARBA as a Blue rabbit, and historically has been characterized as having the deepest, darkest fur of all blue or grey rabbits. The color at its best is uniform rich, dark slate-blue, free from white hairs, sandy or rust color. A white variety named American White Rabbit was recognized in 1925. It was developed by selecting white sports (mutants), and adding in white red-eyed white (albino) Flemish giants in the bloodline. It is an albino variety of rabbit (otherwise known as red-eyed white) - while blue-eyed whites have appeared, they ...
A highly specific, sensitive (25 pg) radioimmunoassay for prostaglandin A is described; the assay is characterized by high reproducibility (coefficient of variation 1-2%) and low cross-reactivity with respect to PGE1 and PGE2 (10%), PGB2 (15%), and PGF2α (0.01%). High specificity for PGA was obtained by chromatographic separation of the prostaglandins. Since it has been suggested that PGA is a natriuretic hormone, the concentration of PGA in the renal cortex, outer medulla, and papilla was determined in rabbits on low-sodium and high-sodium diets in the presence and the absence of the prostaglandin synthetase inhibitor indomethacin. In rabbits on the low-sodium diet (12 mEq/24 hours). PGA2 was 15 ± 4 pg/mg in the cortex, 502 ± 67 pg/mg in the outer medulla, and 3740 ± 640 pg/mg in the papilla. In rabbits on saline loading (56 mEq/24 hours), cortical and outer medullary PGA2 rose to 32 ± 6 pg/mg and 1275 ± 290 pg/mg, respectively, but papillary PGA decreased to 1842 ± 480 pg/mg. PGA ...
Marsh rabbits are most active nocturnally; they spend most of the daylight hours resting in hidden areas.[7] Frequent hiding spots include dense thickets, hollow logs, and stands of cattails and grasses. They have also been known to take advantage of the abandoned burrows of other animals.[10] Marsh rabbits frequently make runway trails in dense vegetation along marsh edges. These trails can be identified easily as the rabbits mark active runways with fecal pellets.[4]. One very distinguishing habit of marsh rabbits is that they walk on all fours, placing each foot down alternately like a cat. Although they can hop like all rabbits, they are more agile in dense vegetation with this walking tendency.[4][7] This smaller gait has been measured at 3.5-6.5 in (8.9-16.5 cm) between steps.[10] The major characteristic of the footprint pattern not seen in other rabbits is widely spread toes.[11]. Marsh rabbits are more aquatic than swamp rabbits as they are not known to inhabit forests.[11] They take to ...
Rabbits are among the most widely used animals in experimental studies in basic and clinical medical sciences. MR images may also be coupled with the studies of rabbits and may provide important clues to the researchers.. Several coils and parameters may be implemented for experimental MR imaging of the rabbit brain, but because of the small size of this brain, the image quality may not be satisfactory. This letter briefly describes our efforts to improve the quality of MR images of the rabbit brain by using different coils and varying technical parameters.. We retrospectively evaluated the MR imaging of 87 male New Zealand white rabbits used in cranial experimental studies between 1994 and 2003 on a 1T system. Experiments had been conducted in conformity with the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals1 and were approved by the local ethics committee. A circularly polarized head coil, a quadrature extremity coil, or a 3-inch (7.62-cm) circular surface coil and fast spin-echo images ...
There actually are two different types of Polish Rabbits. They are the American Polish Rabbit and the British Polish Rabbit or the Brittania Petite. The British Polish Rabbit is the smaller of these two, with weights only reaching 2 ½ pounds! The American Polish Rabbit can reach 3 ½ pounds. However these are both very small rabbits! The British Polish Rabbit can come in many colors, however in the United States, the only color recognized by the American Rabbit Breeders Association is white with red eyes. The American Polish Rabbit has many more recognized colors, including chocolate, black, and blue with matching colored eyes, as well as white with either red or blue eyes.. Polish Rabbits have some other intriguing attributes. They are considered to be quite smart and can learn some simple tricks! This is mostly them learning to react to certain hand signals and voice commands by working with them repetitiously. These little rabbits also have great dispositions, making them ideal pets for ...

Are rabbits soft and fuzzy? Most definitely. Are rabbits as cuddly as they look? Not necessarily. Is a rabbit more like a cat or a dog? Neither. A rabbit is like a rabbit. Are you expecting your rabbit to come running when called? They seldom do. However, having a carrot in hand may help. I have learned to call my rabbits out from under the bed about 10 minutes before I need them. They seem to show up on time this way.. Are you expecting your rabbit to curl up on your lap and sit with you? He probably wont. He may nudge your leg while you sit on the couch, expecting you to move over or pet him. Perhaps he will jump up and sit with you, allow you to pet him, and then scamper off just moments later.. Do you want to hold your bunny for hours? Well, most dont want to be held for hours. Most prefer you to be on the floor and meet them on their level. The floor is where your rabbit will allow you to snuggle with him and show your affections. This is where he is most comfortable. The first rule in ...
We evaluated the propagation of myocardial injury in a model of coronary artery occlusion and reperfusion in control and hypercholesterolemic rabbits. This was done by examining the differences in the infarct size and in the extent of leukocyte accumulation resulting from coronary artery occlusion (30 min) followed by reperfusion (2 or 48 hr) in rabbits fed 1% cholesterol for 4 days vs. controls not fed cholesterol. There was no significant difference in the infarct size in the 2-hr (45.7 +/- 6.7%, n = 8) vs. 48-hr (48.8 +/- 5.8%, n = 9) models of reperfusion in control rabbits. However, infarct size in the cholesterol-fed rabbits at 2 hr (64.0 +/- 4.1%, n = 6) or 48 hr (72.3 +/- 3.0%, n = 8) of reperfusion significantly exceeded that in the corresponding controls (P , .05). The infarct in cholesterol-fed rabbits at 2 hr of reperfusion was smaller than that at 48 hr of reperfusion, but not significantly. Treatment with S-nitroso-N-acetylpenicillamine, a nitric oxide donor, effectively reduced ...

Hearts from 10 New Zealand White male rabbits (mean weight, 3.7±0.4 kg) were isolated, mounted on a vertical Langendorff apparatus, and perfused with a modified Tyrodes solution as described earlier.30 The experimental setup is shown in Fig 1⇓. The temperature of the perfusing solution was maintained at 37±0.5°C and the perfusion pressure at no less than 50 mm Hg. AV node ablation was performed mechanically through a pair of surgical tweezers to control the intrinsic heart rate. Subsequently, the heart was paced at 500-ms cycle length by electrical stimuli of twice diastolic threshold strength and a duration of 2 ms from the right ventricular apex by use of a programmable stimulator and stimulus isolator (Bloom). The heart was immersed in a Tyrodes solution-filled chamber 12 cm wide and 7.5 cm high. A three-lead volume-conducted ECG was obtained by means of four Ag-AgCl electrodes flanking the tissue chamber in an approximate Einthoven configuration.31 32 The signals were amplified by a ...
While many shelter rabbits come from feed stores, flea markets, or laboratories, the sad truth is that most rabbits facing euthanasia were once family pets or classroom animals. The fate is usually not good for these intelligent animals who were bought at pet stores or breeders and surrendered to shelters when the novelty wore off or at the conclusion of a school year. Unfortunately, many people mistakenly assume that a rabbit is a low-maintenance pocket pet or good gift for a child. In reality, rabbits are a lot of work. Plus, their vet care can be expensive. Rabbits are as intelligent and sensitive as cats and dogs. They bond for life with their human guardians and rabbit friends. They grieve deeply when they lose this bond. Rabbit can learn their names, like to play with toys and use a litter box(just like a cat). They are not meant to live confined in cages and require at least 4-5 hours of attention and safe, indoor exercise each day . ...

Skin Irritation The available studies for skin irritation were performed with a design that is more stringent compared to OECD testing guideline 404. In the key study, the undiluted test item was applied by topical occlusive application to the back of three male and three female adult New Zealand White rabbits. One side of the shaven back was slightly scarified and Gauze patches of 2.5 x 2.5 cm laden with 0.5 ml of the test material were applied for an exposure period of 24 hours. Following removal of the dressing the skin reactions were appraised at 24, 48 and 72 h and after 4 and 7 days according to the Draize scoring scheme. The mean group score for erythema was 0.7, 0.7 and 0 for intact skin after 24, 48 and 72 hours, respectively. The mean group score for edema was 0.2, 0 and 0 for intact skin after 24, 48 and 72 hours, respectively. This result is confirmed by a supporting study performed following the same protocol. Here, the mean group score for erythema was 1.8, 1.8 and 1.7 for intact ...
Preterm-born children suffer from neurobehavioral disorders. Premature birth terminates the hypoxic in utero environment and supply of maternal hormones. As the production of interneurons continues until the end of pregnancy, we hypothesized that premature birth would disrupt interneuron production and restoration of the hypoxic milieu or estrogen treatment might reverse interneuron generation. To test these hypotheses, we quantified interneuronal progenitors in the medial, lateral, and caudal ganglionic eminences (MGE, LGE, and CGE) of preterm- (E29 at D3 and D7) vs. term-born (E32 at D0 and D4) rabbits at equivalent postconceptional ages. We found that both total and cycling Nkx2.1+, Dlx2+, and Sox2+ cells were more abundant in the MGE of preterm rabbits at D3 compared to term rabbits at D0, but not in D7 preterm relative to D4 term pups. Total Nkx2.1+ progenitors were also more numerous in the LGE of preterm pups at D3 compared to term rabbits at D0. Dlx2+ cells in CGE were comparable between ...

A number of morphologically distinct, spontaneously occurring lesions are present in the rabbit aorta. Intimal atheromata occur in newborn rabbits, decrease in incidence as the rabbit becomes weaned, and are a rarity in the adult. Intimal mesenchymal thickening is first seen in weanling rabbits and is almost universally present in the adult. Medial sclerotic changes involving exclusively the inner one-half of the media and termed type A lesions are present in weanling and adult, but not in newborn rabbits.. Type A lesions have a variable gross appearance, but a fairly uniform microscopic appearance, which shows principally fragmentation and calcification of elastic lamina and accumulation of acid mucopolysaccharides.. Type B lesions, medial sclerosis involving exclusively the outer half of the media, usually occur throughout the entire aorta, and only in adult rabbits.. ...
Rabbits are a unique species with very specific dietary and health requirements. They are becoming increasingly popular as pets and the more popular they become, the more we learn about them. Rabbits are social animals and enjoy living in a bonded, desexed, pair. They are athletic and need lots of space and exercise, as well as a cosy bed area to sleep in. Their enclosure also needs to be very secure as predation is a common cause of death.. Diet is very important in this species. A diet that is too low in fibre or poorly balanced, can lead to serious gastrointestinal and dental diseases.. Because rabbits are a prey species, they tend to show only subtle signs of illness until they are seriously ill. This means it is important to monitor your rabbit carefully for any changes in their behaviour, eating, drinking or toileting. If you notice any changes call the clinic immediately and discuss them with a vet or book an appointment.. For more information on rabbit health click on the headings ...
Rabbits who spend any time in the garden are most at risk, although even indoor rabbits can contract the virus through being bitten by mosquitoes and fleas. Keeping your rabbit protected from fleas (especially when you have other pets) with a product like Advantage and keeping the hutch and run screened from other rabbits and insects will help prevent your rabbit from contracting the virus. But the only way to make sure your rabbit is protected is through an annual vaccination. The Nobivac Myxo-RHD vaccine protects them against both Myxomatosis and VHD classic strain 1. Please note for full protection your rabbit will also need an annual booster of Filavac -K C+V to protect them from the RHDV2 variant strain. I am terrified not only have I found the rabbit, but it is super sized......I run to neurologist....help....I have a giant rabbit on the wee hill right next to my house what do I do....its going to kill me, a slow cruel death.......I show him my sore hand telling him the rabbit must have bitten me, and my eyes are burning from its laser eye death stare.......my neurologist laughs....he says it is just a tiny brown rabbit on a hill miles from your house, even if it started hopping towards you its too far to ever reach you. It never bit you and although there is a lot of things we dont know about rabbits, we do know they dont have laser eyes.....( well 99.9% sure as we are doctors and can never say 100%). Your hand and eyes are just sore from holding the camera for hours...no giant rabbit, no lazer eyes..go home you are not being threatened or attacked by a killer rabbit ...

TY - JOUR. T1 - Induction of phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase and serine-threonine kinase-like immunoreactivity in rabbit spinal cord after transient ischemia. AU - Sakurai, Masahiro. AU - Hayashi, Takeshi. AU - Abe, Koji. AU - Itoyuama, Yasuto. AU - Tabayashi, Koichi. PY - 2001/4/13. Y1 - 2001/4/13. N2 - The mechanism of spinal cord injury has been thought to be related with tissue ischemia, and spinal motor neuron cells are suggested to be vulnerable to ischemia. To evaluate the mechanism of such vulnerability of motor neurons, we attempted to make a reproducible model of rabbit spinal cord ischemia. Using this model, the inductions of phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3-k) and serine-threonine kinase (Akt) were investigated with immunohistochemical analyses for up to 7 days of the reperfusion following 15 min of ischemia in rabbit spinal cord. It has been demonstrated that both PI3-k and its downstream effector, Akt mediate growth factor-induced neuronal survival. Spinal cord sections from ...
Skin irritation The skin irritation potential of Y-15866 was investigated in a GLP-conform study according to OECD guideline 404 (Arcelin, 2011). The undiluted test substance (0.5 mL) was applied for 4 h to the clipped skin of 3 young adult New Zealand White rabbits (1 male and 2 females) under semiocclusive conditions. The scoring of skin reactions (erythema and edema) was performed 1, 24, 48 and 72 h after removal of the dressing. The test item did not elicit any skin reactions at the application site of any animal at any of the observation time points. No signs of systemic toxicity were seen. The mean erythema and edema scores after 24, 48 and 72 h were 0 for all 3 animals. Eye irritation The eye irritation potential of Y-15866 was investigated in a study according to OECD guideline 405 and in compliance with GLP (Arcelin, 2010). The undiluted test substance (0.1 mL) was placed into the conjunctival sac of the left eye of 3 young adult New Zealand White rabbits (1 male and 2 females). Scoring ...

Rabbits are small mammals found in several parts of the world, in varying habitats including forests, woodland, meadows, savanna deserts and wetland. The most common and well-known species is the European rabbit. Rabbits are social creatures and live in groups of around 2-9 females, 1-3 males and their offspring. All species apart from the Cottontail live in underground burrows (called warrens), or rabbit holes. Rabbits have been domesticated fairly recently compared to other domesticated animals, and pet rabbits might come in different colours and breeds but they will usually behave very similarly to wild rabbits. Rabbits are herbivores (plant eaters) that feed by grazing on grass and leafy weeds. Although were used to seeing rabbits munching on carrots in films and cartoons, root vegetables arent a natural part of a rabbits diet, and because theyre high in sugar they shouldnt be given to pet rabbits too often. Rabbits have a lifespan of around 10 years. Female rabbits (does) usually have their
We investigated the effect of fibronectin on epithelial migration onto the stroma in cultured rabbit cornea. Rabbit plasma fibronectin was purified by affinity chromatography using gelatin-Sepharose 4B, and its purity was confirmed by SDS polyacrylamide slab gel electrophoresis. Antibody against rabbit plasma fibronectin raised in guinea pigs formed a single precipitin line against rabbit plasma and purified rabbit plasma fibronectin by Ouchterlony double diffusion test. When rabbit cornea was cut into small blocks and cultured in TCM-199 medium alone, corneal epithelial cells began to migrate on the cut edge of the corneal stroma. The addition of purified rabbit plasma fibronectin to the culture medium significantly enhanced epithelial migration. The degree of enhancement depended on the amount of fibronectin added. When guinea pig IgG anti-rabbit plasma fibronectin was added, epithelial migration was significantly inhibited when compared with that in control cultured corneal blocks. The ...
We investigated the prevalence of enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) in rabbits acquired from two commercial vendors and a local petting zoo. Fecal samples from 34 Dutch Belted (DB) and 15 New Zealand White (NZW) rabbits were cultured; and isolates were biotyped, serotyped, tested by polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and genotyped by repetitive-element sequence-based PCR (Rep-PCR). Seven (25%) of 28 DB rabbits acquired from one commercial source were positive for EHEC, including O153:H- and O153:H7. One (9%) of 11 NZW rabbits from the same source was positive for eae-, stx1+ O153 strains. In contrast, six DB rabbits from another commercial source and four rabbits from a petting zoo were negative for EHEC. Rep-PCR demonstrated that the O153 EHEC and O145 enteropathogenic E. coli were two distinct clones. Our study indicates that rabbits are a new reservoir host of EHEC that may pose a zoonotic risk for humans ...

TY - JOUR. T1 - Differential transmural constrictor response to norepinephrine in rabbit carotid artery. AU - Flaim, Stephen F.. AU - Field, John M.. AU - Zelis, Robert. N1 - Funding Information: It has been shown that the vasoconstrictor response of smooth muscle to alpha adrenergic stimulation varies according to the position of the muscle cell within the tunica media of the vessel wall from rabbit thoracic aorta (Pascual et al., 1979), sheep carotid artery (Keatinge et al., 1976) and rabbit ear artery (McCalden et al., 1979). The purpose of the present study was to determine if this phenomenon occurred in the rabbit carotid artery as well as to attempt to further characterize the mechanism of this response. In order to achieve these goals, the response of intact isolated perfused segments of rabbit carotid artery was measured during norepinephrine stimulation applied to either the luminal or the adventitial surface or to both surfaces simultaneously under varying experimental conditions. The ...
