Shortly after your arrival in Townsville, you will board your coach and head for the other side of the mountains to the Australian Outback. En route, you will have a chance to view the highlights of the city of Townsville before crossing the mountain ranges that lay to the west of the city. Your coach will ascend gradually to a low plateau of dry, undulating scrubland that is typical of so much of Australias outback - a land of gum, goanna and kangaroo. Lying approximately 87 miles southwest of Townsville, you will find the old gold rush town of Charters Towers, where you will be treated to some morning refreshments upon arrival. Today, Charters Towers is a city of over 10,000, but during the height of the gold rush, it maintained a population three times that size. In 1871, three itinerant prospectors discovered gold here and between that date and 1911, some seven million ounces of gold were extracted from the region. The enormous gold reserves prompted the building of Australias first ...
Objectives: This study examines the accuracy of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) case-ascertainment in routinely collected data. Methods: Retrospective cohort study analysed routinely collected data from all births at Cairns Base Hospital, Australia, from 1 January 2004 to 31 December 2010 in the Cairns Base Hospital Clinical Coding system (CBHCC) and the Queensland Perinatal Data Collection (QPDC). GDM case ascertainment in the National Diabetes Services Scheme (NDSS) and Cairns Diabetes Centre (CDC) data were compared. Results: From 2004 to 2010, the specificity of GDM case-ascertainment in the QPDC was 99%. In 2010, only 2 of 225 additional cases were identified from the CDC and CBHCC, suggesting QPDC sensitivity is also over 99%. In comparison, the sensitivity of the CBHCC data was 80% during 2004-2010. The sensitivity of CDC data was 74% in 2010. During 2010, 223 births were coded as GDM in the QPDC, and the NDSS registered 247 women with GDM from the same postcodes, suggesting ...

High rainfall and clear running creeks give us a false sense of security. For a number of years Friends of the Earth FNQ has questioned how council can guarantee that both Mareeba and Kuranda town water drawn from the Barron River is guaranteed safe at all times. The Barron River is a drain for agricultural toxins for example. The very limited testing for contaminants is no indicator for the quality of the water. Herbicides found in the Barron water for example are not included in Council test suites.. The same principle of inadequate testing applies to bores. If you dont have a comprehensive bore analysis done you cant be sure the water is drinkable. This has just been confirmed in the Koah area where a community project tested bores for heavy metals. Bores in rural residential subdivisions, that have been deemed potable [safe to drink] by Council, developers or real estate agents only had very basic testing done. The tests didnt include E.coli, heavy metals or pesticides despite being ...

It comes as data shows dental outcomes for children were better in the city than in -nearby non-fluoridated areas.. Townsville is now the states only major regional centre outside the southeast to continue the practice after two successful votes to stop it in Gladstone and Mackay.. Hinchinbrook Shire Council may be next, with Mayor Ramon Jayo promising to survey residents about fluoride more than three years after it was added to the water supply.. But Cr Hill said she had no plans for a similar vote.. "At this stage theres no reason to remove fluoride based on the evidence provided," she said.. "The debate in Mackay was really more about who was going to pay, that was the real issue.. "Weve had it for a long time and only add it through once main source in Douglas while some councils have up to six different treatment plants.. "That makes adding fluoride very expensive for them but thats not a concern here.. According to figures from a two-year survey run by Queensland Health, children in ...
30 years ago, CAIRNS iconic Esplanade was used as asbestos dumping ground. The harmful material has started spilling out onto the beach.. A former teacher of Cairns State High School has lifted the lid on the demolition of several school buildings which were later used as landfill near where Cairns hospital helipad is located. Over the last three decades, coastal erosion has caused asbestos to spill out as pictured on the right potentially exposed to the elements.. Russell Geisel (above) who taught at Cairns State High School from 1982-1995 said three World War II era buildings with asbestos roofs were torn down in the mid-80s.. Mr. Geisel said that the sheeting was broken up at the school then mixed in with the rest of the rubble before being dumped on the Esplanade. Four months ago, The Cairns Post revealed that white asbestos had spilled onto the shore opposite Cairns Hospital amid building material dumped about 30 years ago that has been used as landfill.. This project will consist of a field day showcasing innovative drainage systems.. The field day will be open to anyone, but is intended to attract other farmers, county commissioners and county staff, watershed district managers, board members and personnel, local state senators from Minnesota and North Dakota, leaders and managers of state and federal agencies, and agricultural commodity groups. The field day will showcase an innovative subsurface drainage system on the farm. The system is designed to manage when and how much water is being drained via controlled drainage, and to capture and store the drainage water in a storage reservoir so it can be reused and recycled through a subsurface irrigation system. A saturated buffer has also been installed in another field and will be shown during the field day. These systems help better manage water, nutrients, and crop production. Water is reused rather than being sent down the stream, and nutrients are recycled from the drainage water back to ...
The Cairns Islamic Society is a small but growing community that has, after more than a hundred years and 5 generations of Muslims in the area, finally got a Mosque that is currently being built. Try to find local classes.. Push-ups always help build triceps. Instead of doing normal push-ups, turn both hands at a 45 degree angle. This modified pushup is the most effective way to have those triceps strong and toned.. When riding a bicycle, focus on keeping your pace around 80 to 110 RPM. Keeping a stable pace puts less pressure on your own knees, and allows you to ride longer. To ascertain your pace, count the frequency of which your right leg rises during the ten second interval, and multiply that number by six. It should be around 80 to 110 times.. It can be easy to get stronger faster should you more exercise a lot sooner. Your own muscles, then, will have to work much more to meet the demand you are placing on it. Plus, it would improve your overall endurance levels tooGroovy Kids Yoga Townsville As an example, should your full body workout normally takes half an hour, try to finish in 27 minutes instead.. Research indicates that health-related quality of life is impaired in people with chronic hepatitis C whereas little is known about similar effects of chronic hepatitis B. A study was conducted to explore differences in HRQoL (including perceived stigma) between CHB and CHC participants. As expected, CHB participants scored substantially lower on perceived stigma. However, there was no difference in HRQoL between the two groups, indicating that other factors must impact negatively on people with CHB.. The current research aims to reduce unrecognized and untreated cases of CHB. Two priority populations and several priority action areas in the First National Hepatitis B Strategy are being addressed. Migrant populations from endemic areas represent the majority of people with CHB in Australia. Studies in the U.S. show that Hmong people are worse affected than most. Therefore, the Hmong community living in Cairns area (Far North Queensland) will likely benefit from -and has expressed interest in ...
The World Club Challenge loss was followed by a poor start to the 2007 NRL season by the Broncos, who lost their captain and five-eighth Darren Lockyer to an ankle injury after the first match against the North Queensland Cowboys. Lockyer returned to the field in Round 3 against the Penrith Panthers, but Brisbane had lost their first three games in a row for the first time since 1999. They racked up their first win against the Sydney Roosters in the traditional Good Friday match played by the two clubs. Another loss followed by a win in the Andrew Johns farewell against Newcastle in Round 6.. When, in the Round 7 replay of last years grand-final, Brisbane were unable to defeat Melbourne, they had managed to win just 2 of their first seven games, compared to their strong starts in 2006 and 2005. Having not yet played an NRL game in 2007, Tame Tupou, the Broncos top try-scorer for the previous season, left the club in round 7 for England. In round 11 Brisbane were at the bottom of the ladder ...
The Majorville Cairn and Medicine Wheel (Iniskim Umaapi) is an archaeological site of the Blackfeet Nation located south of Bassano, Alberta. The medicine wheel has been dated to 3200 BCE (5200 years ago) by careful stratification of known artifact types. The medicine wheel sits on top of a grassy hill at an elevation of 918 m overlooking a large area of undisturbed prairie around the Bow River. The structure consists of a round stone cairn, 9 m in diameter, surrounded by a 27 m wide cobble circle connected to the cairn by 28 stone spokes. This arrangement is categorized as Subgroup 6 and of the total 67 known medicine wheels only 3 belong to this category, the other two being the Jennings site in South Dakota and Bighorn in Wyoming. The southern half of the cairn has been excavated and the projectile points found indicate it was in use since the Oxbow/McKean Phase for the last 4500 years. The site was built in layers, with the earliest 14 C date from the cairn determined at 3845 plus/minus 85 ...

For the last twenty years and more Geoff Guest and his wife Norma have taken in countless boys and girls under their wings at a place called Petford Training Farm situated west of Dimbulah in far North Queensland. Boys and girls both black and white came there from outlying Aboriginal settlements, towns and cities. Some made their own way there, some were sent by elders, magistrates, social workers, courts, parents and guardians. The one thing they all had in common was for varying reasons they had become alienated from todays societies norms and expectations of them, indeed, for a small percentage of them coming to Petford was their only alternative to institutionalisation. Under the watchful eye and guidance of Geoff and Norma these young Australians were put through a three month Horseman ship course where they learnt to catch wild brumby horses, how to break them in, how to ride and how to care for their mounts. They were also taught basic English and arithmetic, personal hygiene and ...
