We conducted 3 nested case-control studies using data from the Quebec Pregnancy Cohort. This is a population-based cohort with prospective data collection on all pregnancies covered by the Quebec Prescription Drug Insurance, from Jan. 1, 1998, to Dec. 31, 2015, in the province of Quebec.20 The Quebec Pregnancy Cohort is updated every 3 years; the latest data available are from 2015. Individual-level information was obtained from province-wide databases and linked using unique personal identifiers. The Quebec Pregnancy Cohort was first constructed by identifying all pregnancies in the Régie de lassurance maladie du Québec (RAMQ) and the Quebec hospitalization archives (Maintenance et Exploitation de Données pour lÉtude de la Clientèle HOspitalière [MED-ÉCHO]) databases; the first day of the last menstrual period was used to define gestational age, which has been validated against ultrasound measurements in patients charts.21 Gestational age is also provided by MED-ÉCHO and the Institut ...
The government of Quebec has launched the Stratégie québécoise de la recherche et de linnovation (SQRI) in 2007 which aims to promote development through research, science and technology. The government hopes to create a strong culture of innovation in Quebec for the next decades and to create a sustainable economy.[177] The spending on research and development reached some 7.824 billion dollars in 2007, roughly the equivalent of 2.63% of Quebecs GDP.[177] Quebec is ranked, as of March 2011, 13th in the world in terms of investment in research and development.[178] The research and development expenditures will be more than 3% of the provinces GDP in 2013. The R&D expenditure in Quebec is higher than the average G7 and OECD countries.[154] Science and technology are key factors in the economic position of Quebec. More than one million people in Quebec are employed in the science and technology sector.[154]. Quebec is considered as one of world leaders in fundamental scientific research, ...

The objective of this study was to assess the soundness of census tracts as units of analysis, i.e. their degree of homogeneity in terms of the active living potential of residential environments associated with walking. In order to do so, homogeneous zones that optimised the spatial patterning of active living potential indicators hypothesised to be associated with greater involvement in walking, namely population density, land-mix use, and accessibility to services, were successfully designed. This was done through the application of an easy-to-use method combining a classification method called K-means clustering with basic mapping applications of geographical information systems. The degree of soundness of census tracts as units of analysis was established through a series of analyses comparing them to the newly-designed zones.. First the distribution of the three active living indicators between and within census tracts was assessed. Although census tracts were homogeneous in terms of ...

Montréal, April 22, 2013 - In Québec, 90% of the population claims to support organ and tissue donation, yet only 50% of people indicate their consent. Meanwhile, thousands of people waiting for transplants suffer or die as a result of a shortage of donors. For this reason, during National Organ and Tissue Donation Week, Héma-Québec reiterates the importance of signing the organ and tissue donation consent form and informing your loved ones about your decision.. Over the next five weeks, Héma-Québec will disseminate poignant testimonials from recipients and physicians on its Facebook page and its Web site. These vignettes, produced in partnership with Transplant Québec, the Régie de lassurance maladie du Québec and the ministère de la Santé et des Services sociaux, will also be used in an advertising campaign on the Web. These testimonials are intended to provide living proof that donating organs and tissues significantly improves the quality of life of those who are ill. They are ...
We investigated the influence of soil drainage class and tree species on nitrogen (N) mineralization and nitrification rates in two forest catenas in southern Quebec. Monthly net N mineralization and nitrification rates were determined along transects running from well-drained to poorly drained soils for 2 years through in situ incubation of homogenized soils. Potential N transformation rates in soils under American beech, sugar maple, and eastern hemlock trees were determined through incubation of homogenized soils in the laboratory under two different moisture regimes (50 and 100% water by volume) mimicking well-drained and poorly drained soil conditions in the two watersheds. Field-based N mineralization rates averaged 38 ± 6 mg m−2 d−1 in well-drained soils, while those in the poorly drained soils averaged 17 ± 5 mg N m−2 d−1. Similarly, net nitrification rates in well-drained soils (18 ± 4 mg N m−2 d−1) were 3 times greater than those in poorly drained soils (6 ± 3 mg N ...

Before people get overly excited about the Conservatives making big gains in Quebec City, lets keep a couple of things in mind. The Quebec City CMA only has a grand total of 8 seats - two of which are currently held by the CPC on the south shore of the St. Laurence. If the whole Quebec City region went 38% CPC and 33% NDP as this poll suggests, you would probably see the two Tories re-elected, the Tories would likely gain the two most suburban seats Quebec City seats that they lost relatively narrowly last time - Louis St. Laurent and Charlesbourg, the NDP would likely retain the three more urbanized seats of Quebec, Louis-Hebert and Beauport-Limoilou and probably also Beauport-Charlevoix which contains a lot of rural areas on the north shore where the CPC and CAQ have never shown much strength...so when all is said and done this poll would mean the CPC gaining a grand total of TWO seats ReplyDelete ...

Quebec researchers link protein distribution to greater mass and muscle strength in the elderly. Loss of muscle is an inevitable consequence of aging that can lead to frailty, falls or mobility problems. Eating enough protein is one way to remedy it, but it would seem that spreading protein equally among the three daily meals could be linked to greater mass and muscle strength in the elderly. These are the findings of a study conducted at the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI-MUHC) [Dr. Stéphanie Chevalier, scientist with the Metabolic Disorders and Complications Programat the RI-MUHC and an assistant professor at the School of Human Nutrition at McGill University] in collaboration with the Université de Sherbrooke and the Université de Montréal. The research team examined both the amount of protein consumed and its distribution among people aged 67 and over, using one of the most comprehensive cohort studies in Quebec. Read more

For Alfa Laval, methanol testing is part of looking ahead at the marine fuel landscape, which will shift from todays emphasis on LNG to methanol and then renewable ammonia. Although the current project has the engine in focus, it provides a practical catalyst for much wider development work at the Alfa Laval Test & Training Centre. Alfa Lavals scope, while excluding the engine itself, includes many applications that will be influenced by future fuels.. When it comes to new fuels, our close work with engine makers leads us to new ideas and opportunities, says Jørgensen. A good example is Alfa Laval PureCool, our solution for reducing methane slip from LNG engines, which was developed in partnership with WinGD. Our boilers and other existing products will also be used with methanol, so we need to do the same fuel homework we did with LNG.. We were investigating LNG combustion at the Alfa Laval Test & Training Centre long before the LNG market began moving in earnest, Jørgensen ...
The Baker and Blais studies provide us with very useful insight into preventable adverse events within Canadian and Quebec hospitals. However, it is important to note that the rates of adverse events determined through a chart review process as in the Baker and Blais studies cannot be compared to data compiled from employee reporting of incidents and accidents on a reporting form. Like other Quebec hospitals, the JGH collects data by completing the Quebec Health Ministrys AH-223 incident/accident reporting form. Until recently, this information was not generally shared with the public; public reporting of adverse events is a new development for Quebec. Each healthcare organization is different, with varying volumes, populations served and complexities of cases. For this reason, the Jewish General Hospitals approach to incidents and accidents reporting is to compare its performance to itself over time. This is directly in line with the viewpoint of the Ministry of Health and Social Services. ...

Analyses were carried out on data from Quebecs longitudinal study of child development (QLSCD 1998-2002) conducted by Santé Québec, a division of the Institut de la statistique du Québec (ISQ) when children were aged on average 29 months (27 to 31 months). This study annually tracks a representative sample of Quebec children. The initial sample was recruited from the Quebec birth registry when babies were about 5 months old and is representative of singleton births in Quebec in 1997-1998, excluding babies born to mothers living in Northern Quebec, in Cree and Inuit territories as well as on First Nations reservations (2%).38 All singleton births in the included territories were eligible except births of unknown gestational age and premature babies born before 24 gestational weeks.. The research was approved by the human research ethics committee of the Faculty of Medicine of Université de Montréal. Two data sources were used: data on neonatal health problems, weight and height measurements ...

Research from McGill University suggests that people who are vulnerable to developing alcoholism exhibit a distinctive brain response when drinking alcohol, according to a new study by Prof. Marco Leyton, of McGill Universitys Department of Psychiatry. Compared to people at low risk for alcohol-use problems, those at high risk showed a greater dopamine response in a brain pathway that increases desire for rewards. These findings, published in the journal Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research, could help shed light on why some people are more at risk of suffering from alcoholism and could mark an important step toward the development of treatment options ...

Another factor causing the higher levels of mesothelioma in Quebec could be significant exposure levels in factories making asbestos containing products, notes the report. A study of twenty-three asbestos processing factories in Montreal at the end of the 1990s showed that 30% of the factories failed to comply with occupational exposure regulations. Another study, ten years later in 2008, identified only nine factories using asbestos. In none of the nine factories were proper safety standards being followed.. In a follow-up survey in 2102, the Quebec National Public Health Institute (INSPQ) identified six Quebec factories still using chrysotile asbestos. In its publication, Projet Amiante-Industries 2012 : bilan, the INSPQ reported that two of the factories used asbestos from a Quebec mine, two used asbestos-containing materials provided respectively by an Ontario supplier and a supplier in the Czech Republic. The source of the asbestos for the other two factories was not known.. One of the six ...

Marc was traded to his native Quebec and was reborn as a hockey superstar. His 1975-76 season was superb as he led the Quebec Nordiques and the WHA in goals (71), assists (77) and points (148). Unfortunately his season got an abrupt end during the playoffs when he was horrifically jumped from behind by Rick Jodzio, a policeman with the Calgary Cowboys. The Nordiques players came to Marcs rescue as both benches emptied and a 45-minute brawl ensued. Marc was carried off on a stretcher, with blood oozing from his mouth while the players slugged it out toe-to-toe. Marc received a serious brain concussion that endangered his hockey career. Marc eventually recovered but suffered from severe headaches for over a year. This incident almost resulted in Quebec withdrawing from the playoffs and it resulted in Bud Poile, the director of on ice operations in the WHA to resign. It also forced certain anti-violence legislation. Rick Jodzio was suspended for the rest of the year and was eventually tried in ...

Beyond Pesticides, May 19, 2011) Scientists at the University of Sherbrooke in Quebec, Canada found that pesticides associated with genetically engineered (GE) foods are present in maternal, fetal and nonpregnant womens blood, emphasizing the need for further research into the effects that GE food has on human health. The study, Maternal and fetal exposure to pesticides associated to genetically modified foods in Eastern Townships of Quebec, Canada is published in Reproductive Toxicology. Scientists Aziz Aris and Samuel Leblanc analyzed blood samples for 39 nonpregnant women and 30 pregnant woman and their fetuses in Sherbrooke, an urban area of Eastern Townships of Quebec, Canada. Its important to note that none of the women in the study had ever worked or lived with a spouse that worked in contact with pesticides. The diet of the women involved in the study is described as typical of a middle class population of Western industrialized countries.. The Cry1Ab toxin, which is an ...

MONTREAL - Quebecs labour minister is threatening to impose more restrictions on the provinces construction and manufacturing sectors for allegedly flouting health orders. Jean Boulet said today in a statement hes received many reports of non-compliance connected to the two sectors since the government imposed new restrictions Jan. 9. The new measures - in effect until at least Feb. 8 - require the two industries to limit operations to essential activities and to reduce the number of workers in factories and on construction sites. Quebecs new health orders also include a provincewide curfew from 8 p.m. until 5 a.m., in an attempt to reduce COVID-19 transmission and reduce the strain on the health system from rising hospitalizations. Boulet does not enumerate the violations, but says its zero tolerance for those who dont follow the rules and is warning the government could impose additional restrictions. The Canadian Press recently contacted three construction industry associations, who all said

Quebec government veterinarians will return to Nunavik in June to deliver a series of vaccination clinics to dog owners along the Ungava coast.. The annual clinics, which are offered free of charge, aim to protect Nunaviks domestic animal population against rabies.. Vets also offer vaccines against other canine viruses common to the North, including distemper, hepatitis and parvovirus.. And because there is no permanent veterinary service in Nunavik, vets provide those same vaccines and training to local municipal staff to administer vaccines in their absence.. The program works to crack down on the spread of rabies in the region - a virus that can be deadly to both humans and animals if untreated.. The virus is considered to be endemic or always present in the region.. Health officials in Nunavik noted a rise in rabies cases in 2012, when a number of foxes tested positive for the virus.. Foxes and wolves are the main carriers of rabies in the wild - and when they bite dogs, rabies can spread ...
In 1970, the recently elected members of the sovereigntist Parti Québécois refused to recite the Oath of Allegiance before taking their seats in the National Assembly of Quebec. At the time, all the other parties in the assembly agreed that the oath was outdated and needed to be amended.[84] The Act Respecting the National Assembly of Quebec was granted Royal Assent in 1982, in which a supplementary oath pledging loyalty to the people of Quebec was included.[85] The Members Manual of the National Assembly outlines that this additional oath is to the people and constitution of Quebec, distinct from the Oath of Allegiance, which is an oath to the country via the Queen,[86] though some saw the monarch, in that context, as representative of the Quebec state and not of Canada, taking into account Canadas divisible Crown.[87] Also, Ontario Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) Dominic Agostino proposed in 1996 that the Legislative Assembly of Ontario follow that of Quebec and add another ...

It will be interesting to see whether or not Saskatchewan reintroduces EDL legislation after Ontarios information and privacy commissioner manages to implement an on/off switch that she has been talking about with Jesse Brown for the past few weeks. My suspicion is that they will, but that they will let Ontario do the heavy lifting in this area (I expect that Ontarios influence with DHS will be more substantial than Saskatchewan, but maybe that isnt/wont be the case).. In Quebec, Jean Charest will be announcing (today) that Quebecers will soon be able to get EDLs to cross Canadian/American borders. Privacy advocates there have noted that this issue is entirely passing under the radar - somewhat depressingly, Ligue des droits et libertes is suggesting that what occurred in Ontario and other provinces constituted a debate. The stratification period for seeds taken from trees native to Quebec is shorter than for seeds from trees native to northern Florida. This is because the ground freezes earlier and stays frozen longer in Quebec than in northern Florida. In northern Florida the soil seldom freezes hard, but it is cold enough that seeds germinating in early spring would be killed by frost. This phenomenon was verified when red maple seeds harvested from trees growing near Quebec were planted in northern Florida and seeds harvested from red maples originating in northern Florida were sown in soil near Quebec. The Quebec seedlings germinated in the middle of Floridas winter and were killed by frost, while the seeds from Florida never germinated in Quebec ...
