Background Biosensor-based detection provides a rapid and low-cost alternative to conventional analytical methods for revealing the presence of the contaminants in water as well as solid matrices. Although important to be detected, small analytes (few hundreds of Daltons) are an issue in biosensing since the signal they induce in the transducer, and specifically in a Quartz-Crystal Microbalance, is undetectable. A pesticide like parathion (M = 292 Da) is a typical example of contaminant for which a signal amplification procedure is desirable. Methods/Findings The ballasting of the analyte by gold nanoparticles has been already applied to heavy target as proteins or bacteria to improve the limit of detection. In this paper, we extend the application of such a method to small analytes by showing that once the working surface of a Quartz-Crystal Microbalance (QCM) has been properly functionalized, a limit of detection lower than 1 ppb is reached for parathion. The effective surface functionalization is
The formation of sticky layers on bed particles has been considered as a prerequisite for bed agglomeration in fluidized bed combustion and gasification of woody fuels. In addition, the layer formed makes the bed particle less resistant against fragmentation. The fragments from quartz particles can result in deposition. The present investigation was undertaken to determine the layer formation process on quartz bed particles during combustion of wood-derived fuels and to determine the effect of quartz particle layers on deposit build-up in full-scale dual fluidized bed (olivine) steam gasification of logging residues. Bed material samples were collected from three different combustion appliances: bench-scale bubbling fluidized bed, full-scale bubbling fluidized bed and full-scale circulating fluidized bed. These were collected at different sampling times from start-up with fresh bed material. In addition, samples of deposits, bed material, coarse ash, fine ash, and fly coke from a dual fluidized ...

Sphericity has been determined on quartz grains from beach sediments of northern New Jersey to determine its variation with size and genetic quartz type in a beach environment. Within the size range studied, -5phi to +4phi , sphericities increased from a minimum of 0.59 at -4.5phi (22 mm.) to a maximum of 0.85 at +0.9phi (0.55 mm.), and then decreased again to 0.76 at +3.4phi (0.10 mm.). It appears certain that both size, as such, and genetic quartz type, influence sphericity values, but their relative importance is uncertain. The size range in which the control of quartz type on sphericity appears best developed and most noticeable is between -1.5phi and +1.0phi . In coarser grains, either sphericity when released from the parent rock, or mode of abrasion, seems to assume greatest importance. Coarser sizes consist very largely of vein quartz, which may have an inherently low sphericity. In finer sizes sphericity decreases, apparently independently of quartz type. Comparison with river pebbles ...
This thesis is about thermal etching of quartz single crystals with boron oxide melt and thermal etchings on inorganic polymeric single crystals of orthosilicates, willemite (Zn2SiO4) and phenakite (Be2SiO4), where isolated [SiO4] groups are polymerized by corner-sharing with other tetrahedral groups, such as [ZnO4] and [BeO4]. On the thermal etching of quartz, experiments were performed on quartz (10 0), (0001), (10 1) and (11 1) from 500¢J to 700¢J. Three types of etch figures were recognized by scanning electron microscopy: isolated dislocation etch pit, aligned etch pits and flat etch pits. The effects of defect specification and £\-£] displacive phase transformation of quartz on its development of thermal etch figures were evaluated. By doing so, boron oxide melt was proved to be a useful etchant on the studies of defect types and dynamics of quartz. As for the thermal etching of phenakite type silicate, we conducted thermal-cycle etching of willemite at 1250¢J, hydrochloric and ...

A major barrier to the systematic improvement of biomimetic peptide-mediated strategies for the controlled growth of inorganic nanomaterials in environmentally benign conditions lies in the lack of clear conceptual connections between the sequence of the peptide and its surface binding affinity, with binding being facilitated by noncovalent interactions. Peptide conformation, both in the adsorbed and in the nonadsorbed state, is the key relationship that connects peptide-materials binding with peptide sequence. Here, we combine experimental peptide-titania binding characterization with state-of-the-art conformational sampling via molecular simulations to elucidate these structure/binding relationships for two very different titania-binding peptide sequences. The two sequences (Ti-1, QPYLFATDSLIK; Ti-2, GHTHYHAVRTQT) differ in their overall hydropathy, yet via quartz-crystal microbalance measurements and predictions from molecular simulations, we show these sequences both support very similar, ...

Results of a numerical modeling study of quartz dissolution and precipitation in a sub-seafloor hydrothermal system have been used to predict where in the system quartz could be deposited and potentially trap fluid inclusions. The spatial distribution of zones of quartz dissolution and precipitation is complex, owing to the fact that quartz solubility depends on many inter-related factors, including temperature, fluid salinity and fluid immiscibility, and is further complicated by the fact that quartz exhibits both prograde and retrograde solubility behavior, depending on the fluid temperature and salinity. Using the PVTX properties of H2O-NaCl, the petrographic and microthermometric properties of fluid inclusions trapped at various locations within the hydrothermal system have been predicted. Vapor-rich inclusions are trapped as a result of the retrograde temperature-dependence of quartz solubility as the convecting fluid is heated in the vicinity of the magmatic heat source. Coexisting ...
Crystalline silica is the scientific name for a group of minerals composed of silicon and oxygen. The term crystalline refers to the fact that the oxygen and silicon atoms are arranged in a threedimensional repeating pattern. This group of minerals has shaped human history since the beginning of civilization. From the sand used for making glass to the piezoelectric quartz crystals used in advanced communication systems, crystalline silica has been a part of our technological development. Crystalline silicas pervasiveness in our technology is matched only by its abundance in nature. Its found in samples from every geologic era and from every location around the globe. Scientists have known for decades that prolonged and excessive exposure to crystalline silica dust in mining environments can cause silicosis, a noncancerous lung disease. During the 1980s, studies were conducted that suggested that crystalline silica also was a carcinogen. As a result of these findings, crystalline...

Two varieties of quartz are commonly called rose quartz. 1. One is found in translucent masses made of intergrown anhedral crystals. It occurs in different hues of pink, sometimes blueish, sometimes more reddish; irradiation may cause the formation of smoky quartz color centers and add a gray tone. Rose quartz is always showing a hazy to translucent character due to microscopic fibrous inclusions of a pink borosilicate mineral related to dumortierite (Applin and Hicks, 1987; Goreva et al, 2001; Ma et al, 2002), which group leader Rossman names dididumortierite (Nadin, 2007). These inclusions are probably the result of an exsolution from an initially homogeneous material. The color of the fibrous mineral as well as the color of rose quartz is stable up to temperatures of about 575°C (Lehmann and Bambauer, 1978; Goreva et al, 2001) and is also generally stable in ultraviolet light (Goreva et al, 2001), although there have

The reason for a variety of different quartz colors and shapes is because different crystals bond with other elements in the Earth. Quartz is comprised of Silicon Dioxide, SiO2, the Earths most common compound. Different color quartz comes from these compounds binding with other elements. For instance, yellow and brownish quartz is that color because of impurities from Iron, while red and pink quartz are stained with magnesium, phosphate or aluminum imperfections.. ...

The work of Fubini et al [5] explicitly specifies the use of a liquid nitrogen cooled MCT detector, the same type of detector is assumed in the work of Pandurangi et al. although this is not specified [10]. An inherent problem with this type of detector is the condensation of water vapour and subsequent water ice formation on the cold detector window as a function of time. Indeed [10] shows spectra for two types of quartz samples where the O-H stretching band at ~3400 cm-1 is comparable in magnitude to that of the bulk Si-O stretching bands at ~1100 cm-1. This considerably exceeds what might be expected for surface H2O or OH species. No spectra showing the bulk bands are given in Fubini et al [5] and therefore direct comparison is not possible. Detectors of this type should be avoided when studying water/solid systems as this inherent experimental artefact will always obscure any information pertaining to the adsorption of water on the sample surface. Any data relating to this band should always ...

1) Sure, crystals emit power - the power to enrich gemshop owners beyond their wildest dreams. The wholesale price of quartz crystals, the kind most often mentioned as having mystic properties, has increased 1,000 percent since the crystal craze began. Claims of healing powers, however, are spurious and are a result largely of a misunderstanding of quartzs technical properties by addle-brained New Agers.. Quartz, also known as silicon dioxide or silica, is the earths most abundant mineral, most often seen in the form of sand. Quartz crystals can be created in hot water under pressure, a process that may be readily duplicated in the lab. Though not as iridescent (or as hard) as diamonds, quartz crystals are undeniably pretty, and that plus their large size and easy availability has undoubtedly contributed to their popularity.. Quartz crystals are widely used in timepieces and radio tuners owing to two interesting properties: they dont expand much when heated, and they change shape slightly ...
Quartz samples of different origin from 10 localities in the Southern Ural region, Russia have been investigated to characterize their trace element compositions and defect structures. The analytical combination of cathodoluminescence (CL) microscopy and spectroscopy, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, and trace-element analysis by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) revealed that almost all investigated quartz samples showed very low concentrations of trace elements (cumulative concentrations of <50 ppm with <30 ppm Al and <10 ppm Ti) and low abundances of paramagnetic defects, defining them economically as
