Qatar, a small peninsular country in the Persian Gulf, emerged as a partner of the United States in the mid-1990s and currently serves as host to major U.S. military facilities. Qatar holds the thirdlargest proven natural gas reserves in the world, and its small citizenry enjoys the worlds highest per capita income. The emir of Qatar, Shaykh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, has managed a course of major economic growth and very limited political liberalization since replacing his father in a bloodless palace coup in 1995. The emir has undertaken several projects to capitalize on Qatars hydrocarbon resources, improve educational opportunities for Qatari citizens, and pursue economic diversification. As part of Qatars liberalization experiment, the Qatari monarchy founded Al Jazeera, the first all-news Arabic language satellite television network, in 1995. The network has proven influential and controversial since its establishment, including during recent unrest in the Arab world. In an April 2003 ...

Introduction: Due to a rapidly changing lifestyle in Qatar, determinants of non-communicable diseases and linked levels of risk factors have risen. These facts pose a national challenge (1). Information about Qatari adults` (19-30yr.) dietary habits is essential because of the increase in the incidence and prevalence of obesity in Qataris. In 2006, the percentage of Qatari boys who are overweight and obese is 28.6%, and 7.9%, respectively (3). Aim of this study was to determine body composition, blood pressure and dietary habits of the next cohort, those 18-29 yrs old. Methods: 80 Qatari male students, 18-29 yrs of age, from Qatar University (QU) participated. Blood pressure (BP) was measured by Omron HEM-780, body composition (body weight and percent of body fat (BF), were measured by OMRON BF-400. Dietary habits were evaluated using the NHANES Food Frequency Questionnaire. For data analysis, Chi-square test and univariate analyses of variance were conducted using SPSS version 20. PARIS: Arab states may want their turn at the helm of UNESCO, but the barbs hurled by Egypt at rival candidate Qatar during the vote highlights the fractious geopolitics paralysing the workings of the U.N. cultural agency.. The row between Qatar and Egypt has its roots in the crisis engulfing Qatar and its Gulf Arab neighbours which have severed diplomatic, trade and travel ties with Doha after accusing it of sponsoring hardline Islamist groups, a charge Qatar denies.. Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic disease caused by a defect of CF transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) gene. CF affects multiple systems, predominantly with respiratory involvement. In Qatar, researchers have been exploring various aspects of the disease for almost 20 years. PubMed and Google Scholar were reviewed for articles related to CF in Qatar. The first publication appeared in the year 2000. Since then, several studies have been conducted on CF patients in Qatar considering a variety of topics. The presence of the CFTR I1234V mutation in a certain Arab tribe stands out as a distinguishing characteristic of CF patients in Qatar when compared to the larger Arab region or even worldwide. We aim here to summarize the existing CF research conducted in Qatar over the years as well as to introduce topics for future research.
It had been reported that up to 37% of the adult male population smokes cigarettes in Qatar. The Global Youth Tobacco Survey also stated that 13.4% of male school students aged 13 to 15 years in Qatar smoke cigarettes. Smoking cessation is key to reducing smoking-related diseases and deaths. Healthcare providers are in an ideal position to encourage smoking cessation. Pharmacists are the most accessible healthcare providers and are uniquely situated to initiate behavior change among patients. Many studies have shown that pharmacists can be successful in helping patients quit smoking. Studies demonstrating the effectiveness of pharmacist-delivered smoking cessation programs are lacking in Qatar. This proposal aims to test the effect of a structured smoking cessation program delivered by trained ambulatory pharmacists in Qatar. A prospective, randomized, controlled trial is conducted at eight ambulatory pharmacies in Qatar. Participants are randomly assigned to receive an at least four-session face-to
In Qatar, the ruling Al Thani (الثاني) family continued to hold power following the declaration of independence in 1971. The head of state is the Emir, and the right to rule Qatar is passed on within the Al Thani family. Politically, Qatar is evolving from a traditional society into a modern welfare state. Government departments have been established to meet the requirements of social and economic progress. The Basic Law of Qatar 1970 institutionalized local customs rooted in Qatars conservative Islamic heritage, granting the Emir preeminent power. The Emirs role is influenced by continuing traditions of consultation, rule by consensus, and the citizens right to appeal personally to the Emir. The Emir, while directly accountable to no one, cannot violate the Sharia (Islamic law) and, in practice, must consider the opinions of leading notables and the religious establishment. Their position was institutionalized in the Advisory Council, an appointed body that assists the Emir in ...

Qatars Islamic Education textbook for grade 11 devotes an entire chapter to the topic of secularism and the dangers it represents. The book describes secularism as a negative phenomenon that originated in the West and was injected into the Islamic world by the colonialist powers in a bid to distance the Muslims from their religion and raise generations disconnected from Islam. The chapter lists the negative characteristics of secularism and its detrimental effects, and stresses that Islam views it as heresy.

Djibouti is now accusing Eritrean forces of having occupied a contested area along the border, and have lodged a formal complaint with both the UN Security Council and the African Union, and placed their military on alert related to the alleged incursion.. The two nations have repeatedly had disputes in the Ras Doumeira region, which has on occasion led to military conflict. The most recent such clash over the boundary was in 2008, and left over 100 people killed. Internationally Djibouti has tended to be supported in this dispute.. Another war in the region clearly doesnt benefit anybody, and while theres talk of the African Union getting involved to try to mediate the dispute again, it seems like the whole mess couldve been avoided if they hadnt ended up chasing the Qatari forces out of the region.. ...

Over the past 50 years, the discovery of oil has catalyzed considerable infrastructure development in the six GCC countries of Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE. The consequent need for expansion in the workforce has led to an influx of migrant workers over the past three decades.2 For example, in the 1960s, Qatar had a small, homogenous Arab population of 100,000.This population has increased more than twentyfold to over 2 million, primarily through immigration.3 Foreigners now make up 70% of Qatars population and an estimated 94% of its workforce. In neighboring Saudi Arabia, migrant workers constitute around one-third of the population.4 Similarly, migrants make up more than half the population in Bahrain.5 In the UAE, migrants account for more than 80% of the population.6 This immigration has helped GCC countries accelerate development, and the resulting remittance flows have undoubtedly had a positive effect on the economic prosperity of certain economically ...

Brzezinski: I cant engage either in psychoanalysis or any kind of historical revisionism. He obviously has a difficult problem on his hands, and there is a mysterious aspect to all of this. Just consider the timing. In late 2011 there are outbreaks in Syria produced by a drought and abetted by two well-known autocracies in the Middle East: Qatar and Saudi Arabia. He all of a sudden announces that Assad has to go-without, apparently, any real preparation for making that happen. Then in the spring of 2012, the election year here, the CIA under General Petraeus, according to The New York Times of March 24th of this year, a very revealing article, mounts a large-scale effort to assist the Qataris and the Saudis and link them somehow with the Turks in that effort. Was this a strategic position? Why did we all of a sudden decide that Syria had to be destabilized and its government overthrown? Had it ever been explained to the American people? Then in the latter part of 2012, especially after the ...

Many Internet users in this Arab country wondered why their access bills rocketed in recent weeks. The reason? Their usernames and passwords were being sold on CDs. Jihad Abdullah reports from Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
If you can imagine a future powered by sustainable food and fuels; if you can imagine a future where globalism means that appropriate technologies are employed where they work best to the globes greatest advantage; if you can imagine a future of cooperation and collaboration to work out humankinds tensions, then you see a future envisioned by Advanced Biofuels USA.. The future of the advanced biofuels industry is at a critical crossroads. In the US, the 10% motor fuel ethanol mandate has created a demand of 13 billion gallons/year of ethanol. This has been very good for the corn-ethanol industry which has been able to meet this demand. However, because current Flex-Fuel engines pay a significant mileage penalty when E-85 is used, we are stuck on the 13 billion/year plateau meaning there is no meaningful demand for advanced motor vehicle biofuels. Even the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) has little impact since 15 billion gallons/year of corn ethanol are included in the standard. International ...

As Mohammed bin Salmans blockade of Qatar nears the year and a half mark, it would be easy for the tiny-but-rich Gulf state to gloat over the kingdoms woes. But chaos across the border is a big worry. A quiet high road is paying off for Qatar. Even MbS seems to agree.
Mogadishu, Somalia (AP) - Somalia says it has resumed diplomatic ties with neighboring Kenya after severing relations late last year.. A government statement on Thursday thanked Qatar for its mediation efforts. Kenyas presidency tweeted only that President Uhuru Kenyatta had received a special message from Qatars leader delivered by the foreign ministers special envoy for mediation of conflict resolution.. Somalia had accused Kenya of interfering in its affairs as the Horn of Africa nation struggled with talks on how to carry out a national election - a vote that has been delayed since early February. Somalias President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed recently caused an uproar by approving a controversial two-year term extension. That move brought extraordinary scenes of rival groups of soldiers firing on each other in the capital, Mogadishu. The president later backed off.. Somalias federal government had accused Kenya of meddling in politics in the countrys south, where Kenya has soldiers ...
MANILA, Philippines: The presumptive Philippine president-elect has blasted the countrys dominant Roman Catholic church as the most hypocritical institution and accused some of its bishops of corruption for allegedly asking favors from politicians, including him.. In a late-night news conference that dragged on to the early hours of Sunday in southern Davao city, Mayor Rodrigo Duterte questioned the relevance of Catholic bishops, citing his overwhelming victory in the May 9 presidential election based on an unofficial count despite efforts by them to persuade Filipinos not to vote for him.. Such harsh public condemnation of the influential church and its bishops by a top politician is rare in the Philippines, Asias bastion of Catholicism. It presages a potentially thorny relationship between the Catholic church and the incoming president, who shocked bishops in November when he cursed Pope Francis for sparking a huge traffic jam that trapped him for hours during a visit to Manila.. Duterte ...
Saffron is the most expensive spice in the world! It is produced from the saffron crocus flower (Crocus sativus). It is actually the dried stigmas (which are the insides of a flower that catch pollen) and has a deep auburn colour and sweet flavour. The stigmas can only be picked by hand as machines are not delicate enough. It takes 250,000 stigmas to make just half a kilo of saffron, hence its high price, however you only need a pinch as it is very strong.. The Crocus flower is native to Southwest Asia and some areas of Europe. Though it is often harvested to be used as a spice for cooking or for flavoring tea, it is also known to have many health benefits as an herbal supplement. Saffron has lost some of its popularity as a spice due to more common and affordable herbs and spices, yet it still remains as a herbal supplement because of its many medicinal benefits.. Many people do not know the numerous health benefits that can be gained from using a saffron herbal supplement. The amount of ...
If you love to travel and find yourself randomly searching for airfare sales or browsing Lonely Planet, why not carve out a niche for yourself as a private travel agent? My friend, Mark Jackson did just that, making extra money online with his travel consulting side business. Start with word of mouth recommendations from friends who know they can count on you for the cheapest flights, and then move on and create a Facebook or LinkedIn group to invite people who want to stay on top of the latest deals. Eventually you could spin this into a full-time consultancy teaching people how to make their dream trip a reality. ...

Samuels, 34, anchored the innings with his 95-ball knock, hitting one six and 15 fours in the day-night game that was reduced to 36 overs a side after a rain interruption of more than two hours.. Under the revised Duckworth-Lewis target, Sri Lanka need 190 off 36 overs for a 3-0 sweep of the series. The visitors, who lost the first two ODIs, were off to a disastrous start after being put in to bat at the Pallekele stadium.. Paceman Lasith Malinga (2-43) tasted success in the first over of the game, having opener Johnson Charles caught off the fourth ball by Tillakaratne Dilshan..
