In this investigation differences in cutaneous sensation were detected by human participants between synthetic pyrethroids with a cyano group in the (S)-configuration of the 3-phenoxybenzyl alcohol of their molecular structure (fenvalerate) and those that do not (permethrin). A strong relation was noted between insecticidal potency and degree of induced cutaneous sensation for the alpha-cyano and non-cyano pyrethroids, with a prominent difference between the two. Pyrethroids are a class of widely-used insecticides that can be transported from terrestrial applications to aquatic systems via runoff and tend to sorb to organic carbon in sediments. Pyrethroid occurrence is detrimental to stream ecosystems due to toxicity to sediment-dwelling invertebrates which are particularly at risk of pyrethroid exposure in urban streams. In this work, 49 streams located in watersheds in the northeastern United States were surveyed for nine current-use pyrethroids using two extraction methods. Total sediment concentrations were determined by exhaustive chemical extraction, while bioaccessible concentrations were determined by single-point Tenax extraction. Total and bioaccessible pyrethroid concentrations were detected in 76% and 67% of the sites, and the average sum of pyrethroids was 232 ng/g organic carbon (OC) for total and 43.8 ng/g OC for bioaccessible pyrethroids. Resistance has been attributed to elevated activities of cytochrome P450s but the molecular basis underlying this metabolic resistance is unknown. Microsatellite and SNP markers were used to construct a linkage map and to detect a quantitative trait locus (QTL) associated with pyrethroid resistance in the FUMOZ-R strain of An. funestus from Mozambique. By genotyping 349 F2 individuals from 11 independent families, a single major QTL, rp1, at the telomeric end of chromosome 2R was identified. The rp1 QTL appears to present a major effect since it accounts for more than 60% of the variance in susceptibility to permethrin. This QTL has a strong additive genetic effect with respect to susceptibility. Experiments carried out statically based on standard method (O.E.C.D.). INTRODUCTION: Based on the assumption that professional groups with frequent chemical exposure are at an increased risk for developing Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS), a sample of 45 professional pest controllers was investigated. METHODS: The examination of the pest controllers consisted of a physical and laboratory examination with urine screening for pyrethroid metabolites, a psychiatric interview, a neuropsychological test battery, and a chemical sensitivity questionnaire. RESULTS: Persistent or serious work related health problems and chemical sensitivity were not reported. A field experiment tested the effectiveness of carbaryl and two pyrethroid insecticides, cyfluthrin and esfenvalerate, in protecting high-value Engelmann spruce trees from attack by Dendroctonus rufipennis Kirby. Carbaryl suspension at the 2% registered rate and a reduced rate of 1 % were both effective in protecting Engelmann spruce from attack by D. rufipennis through two pheromone baiting periods and 24 months following insecticide application . Cyfluthrin at 0.025% rate and esfenvalerate at 0.025 and 0.05% rates provided effective protection through one pheromone baiting and 12 months following insecticide application. Although pyrethroid-treated materials are a promising tool for the prevention and the control of dengue in the tropics, the development of pyrethroid resistance in the main mosquito vector (Aedes aegypti) may negate their use for personal and/or community protection. In that context, the efficacy of a mixture of a repellent (N,N-diethyl toluamide [DEET]) and a non-pyrethroid insecticide (propoxur) was investigated under laboratory conditions against both pyrethroid-susceptible and pyrethroid-resistant mosquitoes with the knockdown resistance (kdr) mutation. The results showed that a combination of propoxur and DEET induced a knockdown effect and mortality as high as deltamethrin (a standard pyrethroid) against the susceptible strain, and significantly higher efficacy against the pyrethroid-resistant strain. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of permethrin-treated plastic sheeting (ITPS) applied as a lining to the ceiling or walls of rooms against pyrethroid-susceptible and pyrethroid-resistant Anopheles gambiae. METHOD: Overnight tests were carried out in veranda-trap experimental huts in Vallée du Kou, where two molecular forms of A. gambiae, S and M, occur. The S form is mostly pyrethroid resistant due to the kdr mechanism, and the M form is mostly kdr susceptible. A variety of ITPS covered surfaces were tested, ranging from ceiling only to all walls plus ceiling covered. RESULTS: ITPS had a major effect on the mortality of mosquitoes, the proportion killed being dependent upon the surface area covered. In this study, the acute toxicity of lambda-cyhalothrin, a synthetic pyrethroid pesticides heavily used in the paddy fields, to the juvenile and adults of Astacus leptodactylus was investigated. The two different experiments, one for the juvenile (0.417±0.001 g) and one for the adult (39±2.2 g) crayfish were conducted. Acute toxicity tests was performed in 3 L glass jars for the juvenile and in aquariums for the adults. Acute toxicity tests with a static control and 6 different concentrations with 3 replications were tested. About 10 healthy individuals were placed in each. During the experiments, the water temperature was kept at 20°C and average pH was constant at 7.8. To investigate possible cardiotoxicity, we had examined different concentrations of permethrin on the freshly isolated rat heart cells using the alkaline comet assay. A significant difference in % tail DNA between all concentrations of permethrin (5, 10, 20 μM) and vehicle (control) without enzymes and with Fpg-treated cells were measured. The results indicated that permethrin induced oxidative damage to purine bases in the heart cells. Resistance to cyfluthrin in broiler farm populations of lesser mealworm, Alphitobius diaperinus (Panzer) (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae), in eastern Australia was suspected to have contributed to recent control failures. We wish to test the hypothesis that existing public health insecticides could be made to deliver excellent malaria control without driving the evolution of insecticide resistant mosquitoes simply by using their active ingredients at lower concentrations. Insecticides are a major contributor in human poison fatalities worldwide including India. Present study was attempted to study the profile of insecticide mortality in this part of the country. This is a twelve year retrospective review of insecticide poisoning fatalities undertaken at Kasturba Medical College, Manipal. Among total of 1917 autopsies conducted, 372 cases were due to poisoning out of which 287 cases (15%) were of death due to insecticides with a predominance of organophosphates. Ninety two percent of poisoning fatalities were due to self-poisoning. Majority of victims were males in their 3rd decade of life. Majority of the cases occurred in villages, more during winter season with indoor consumption of poison in more than 3/4th of cases. We suggest further studies at multiple centers to observe a trend in order to float a new strategy for controlling this insecticide menace.. ...
