Meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus pseudintermedius (MRSP) has recently emerged as a worldwide cause of canine pyoderma. In this study, we characterized 22 S. pseudintermedius isolates cultured from 19 dogs with pyoderma that attended a veterinary dermatology referral clinic in Australia in 2011 and 2012. Pyoderma gangrenosum is a destructive cutaneous disease characterised by progressive painful ulceration. The occurrence of pyoderma gangrenosum at a surgical site is rare (especially if there is no predisposing illness), but is well recognised. We present a case of a 63-year-old man who developed erythematous ulcerative lesions due to pyoderma gangrenosum in and around a lower limb fasciocutaneous flap used to cover an exposed total knee prosthesis. The lesions were initially confused with postoperative wound infection. No predisposing disorder, other than the rarely reported association with osteoarthritis, was found. The diagnosis is important because its rapid detection not only avoids unnecessary treatment but also allows for prompt intervention with oral steroids. My problems with PG started mid Feb 2007, it went from looking like a spider bite to a fist sized lesion within 5 days; it was on the arch of my left foot and I could bear very little weight or pressure on it. Went to a dermatologist, who also did a biopsy (which I agreed hurt like the devil) but he was pretty sure it was PG with me having Crohns. He gave me an ointment to put on it and said to soak it in warm water 10 mins a day and to keep it covered. The pain that we feel with PG is unbelievable…if you have not had it you have no idea the excruciating pain. I also developed ¾ smaller ones on my foot that thank goodness never erupted.
