BACKGROUND: Z4032 was a randomized study conducted by the American College of Surgeons Oncology Group comparing sublobar resection alone versus sublobar resection with brachytherapy for high-risk operable patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). This evaluates early impact of adjuvant brachytherapy on pulmonary function tests, dyspnea, and perioperative (30-day) respiratory complications in this impaired patient population. METHODS: Eligible patients with stage I NSCLC tumors 3 cm or smaller were randomly allocated to undergo sublobar resection with (SRB group) or without (SR group) brachytherapy. Transfer velocities of 5 sparingly soluble gases were measured in two different wind wave tanks at wind speeds between u10=1.2 m/s and 67 m/s. Two different gas analysis techniques were used, FT-IR and UV spectroscopy. Additionally, a method was developed that allows the parallel measurement of gas transfer velocity and the solubility. The outer tube is made from a smooth copper tube with an inner diameter of 21.2 mm. The corrugation pitches used in this study are 5.08, 6.35, and 8.46 mm. The method of the invention includes estimating the cardiac output or pulmonary capillary blood flow of a patient based on partial pressure of alveolar CO2 rather than on the partial pressure of end tidal CO2, as previously practiced. A computer program for calculating the cardiac output or pulmonary capillary blood flow of a patient is also disclosed.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The aim of the thesis was to investigate the use of flow destabilization methods, combined with permeate backflushing (BIF) or on their own, on flux recovery and maintenance in capillary UF membrane systems under cross-flow (XF) and dead-end (DE) operating conditions. Various hydraulic and mechanical methods have been used to remove the accumulated cake layer and improve steady state process flux. Permeate backflushing (B/F) is the most widely used but the drawbacks are loss of product and extensive down-time. In a pilot plant study for ultrafiltration of surface waters containing high NOM, turbidity and cation loads, the use of flow destabilization, or feed flow reversal (FFR) combined with cross-flow B/F was able to improve the normalised flux by 10.7 ± 3.4 %, compared with 3.2 ± 1.6 % improvement for BIF without FFR.
