Other dioceses listed in this records collection are the Diocese of Ponce (erected in 1924), the Diocese of Arecibo (erected in 1960), and the Diocese of Caguas (erected in 1964). Study Design. The overall goal of this project is to implement and evaluate a community-level, structured approach, the Enhanced HIV Care Access and Retention Intervention for drug users in San Juan, Puerto Rico. It will bring HIV care directly to five San Juan neighborhoods in which a high proportion of HIV-positive injection drug users (IDUs) reside. The enhanced care intervention is comprised of 4 components: A) a neighborhood-level HIV Testing Campaign to identify HIV-positive drug users who are not aware of their HIV status, B) a Treatment Re-engagement Campaign using patient navigators for out-of-care HIV-positive IDUs, C) a Patient Navigator Linkage to Care and Substance Abuse Treatment team for both newly diagnosed and out of care HIV-positive IDUs and D) a Mobile HIV Care Clinic staffed by HIV clinicians to facilitate linkage into and retention in care. The oldest city within the United States is actually an ocean away, and today it was recognized as a National Historic Landmark. The historic district of Old San Juan, Puerto Rico is one of 13 new National Historic Landmarks announced today by Interior Secretary Ken Salazar. Puerto Rico is also the site of a second newly-designated landmark - the Casa Dra. Concha Meléndez Ramirez, in San Juan, the residence and workplace of one of Puerto Ricos most well-known intellectuals and educators, Concha Meléndez Ramírez.. Old San Juan is the only existing representation of an almost 400-year-old Spanish colonial city in the United States, according to the Department of Interior. As the oldest city in the U.S. and its territories, the Old San Juan Historic District includes the oldest house, Christian church, executive mansion, convent and military defenses in the U.S. It contains "the largest collection of buildings representing four centuries of Spanish culture, religion, politics and architecture," ...
WASHINGTON (AFP) - Protesters marched Sunday in Washington in solidarity with hurricane-hit Puerto Rico, criticizing the lackluster US response to the storm and calling for reform.. Hurricane Maria slammed into Puerto Rico in September, ravaging the US territorys infrastructure. Some 50 percent of its population of 3.4 million people still lacks electricity more than two months later.. Demonstrators gathered at the US Capitol with Puerto Rican flags and signs that read "Fight for Puerto Rico," then marched toward the Lincoln Memorial at the other end of the National Mall.. Lin-Manuel Miranda, the creator of hit hip-hop musical "Hamilton," and Jose Andres, an award-winning chef who led efforts to feed hungry Puerto Ricans after the storm, both attended the march.. "We have men and women in Puerto Rico who are suffering. We need to help our fellow Americans. We need to abolish the Jones Act, we need to remove the debt, we need to make Puerto Rico great again," said Janette Messina, a 45-year-old ...

San Juan is the capital of, and at about 395,000, the largest city in, Puerto Rico. It has one of the best harbors in the Caribbean. The city celebrates its fifth century in 2008 or 2021, depending on whether one counts from the founding of the original settlement at Caparra or the act of moving the Caparra settlement to Puerto Rico isle (now Old San Juan).
Earlier this year, NPQ wrote about the strategic investments approach of the Puerto Rico Community Foundation in its recovery efforts post Hurricane Maria. This week, we caught up with its president, Nelson Colón, as he prepares for a speech at the City Club of Cleveland on community investment opportunities in Puerto Rico.. The City of Cleveland and Puerto Rico have what Colón describes as, "mutually enriching social, cultural, and economic relationship." Shortly after Maria, the citys baseball team, the Cleveland Indians, visited San Juan with a group of Cleveland leaders and stopped by the foundation to learn about its equity-focused funding approach. A year after the storm, during which many on the island and the states have decried Puerto Ricos entrenched inequity, the foundation is still the only funder on the island with an equity strategy.. The foundation has a particularly strong relationship with the Cleveland Foundation, which was its mentor foundation in 1983 when Puerto Rico ...
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - On November 21, 2017, a federal grand jury in the District of Puerto Rico returned an indictment against 32 defendants charged with conspiracy to distribute controlled substances in the municipality of San Juan, announced Rosa Emilia Rodríguez-Vélez, United States Attorney for the District of Puerto Rico. The FBI and the Puerto Rico Police Department (PRPD), San Juan Strike Force Unit, are in charge of the investigation.. The indictment alleges that beginning in or about the year 2011, the organization distributed crack, heroin, cocaine, marihuana, Oxycodone (commonly known as Percocet), and Alprazolam (commonly known as Xanax) all within 1,000 feet of the real property comprising the San Fernando Public Housing Project, a school and a playground in the municipality of San Juan, all for significant financial gain and profit. The 32 defendants acted in different roles in order to further the goals of their organization, to wit: leaders, drug point owners, enforcers, ...
Americans in Puerto Rico are still suffering from the devastation of Hurricane Maria, and I ask you to take aggressive action to help them. In light of the islands damaged infrastructure and its residents lack of access to power and clean water, it is critical that the island receives the resources needed to properly treat people who depend on medically necessary services. Many Floridians contact my office every day to emphasize that their family and friends in Puerto Rico are still struggling to recover from this deadly storm.. There are news reports that some water in Puerto Rico has been contaminated, causing people to contract leptospirosis, a bacterial disease that can cause kidney damage, meningitis, liver failure, and death. I am very concerned that there could be additional cases of leptospirosis or other bacterial infections, and that the islands lack of resources could prevent those infected from receiving necessary treatment.. San Juan Bautista is the main town in the Juan Fernández Islands. Some sources say it was founded in 1877, while others give an earlier date of 1750. It is located on Cumberland Bay on the center of the northeast coast of Robinson Crusoe Island. Although the community maintains a rustic serenity dependent on the spiny lobster trade, residents employ a few vehicles, a satellite internet connection, and many television sets. As of the 2012 census, the town had a population of 800 in an area of 0.31 km2 (0.12 sq mi). There is a soccer pitch at the northern end of the village. The nearby school is called the Dresden School, after the German light cruiser SMS Dresden which was sunk there during World War I, as is the street it is situated on. The names of other generally unpaved streets in the village include Larraín Alcalde, Ignacio Carrera Pinto, El Sándalo, Vicente González, Teniente Cortés, and La Pólvora. Overlooking San Juan Bautista are Las Cuevas de los Patriotas (Patriots Caves), ...
In 1598 the new Spanish settlement near this Pueblo was made the first capital of the New Mexico province of New Spain by Juan de Oñate. It is 25 miles (40 km) north of Santa Fe, which replaced it as the capital when founded in 1608. San Juan Pueblo was the northern terminus of the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, an important historic trail from Mexico City used by settlers and traders from 1598 to 1884. San Juan Pueblo was also the home of Popé, the leader of Pueblo Revolt of 1680 against the Spanish. In 2005 the Tewa people changed the Pueblo name back to its pre-Spanish name, Ohkay Owingeh.[1] ...

The San Juan Basin of northwest New Mexico and southwest Colorado contains several Upper Cretaceous coal-bearing formations. The coals in these formations were deposited in environments associated with repeated transgressions and regressions of the Western Interior seaway in Late Cretaceous time. A detailed subsurface and surface study of the coal beds in one of these units, the Fruitland Formation, formed the basis for a coal-depositional model (Fassett and Hinds, 1971). This model basically shows that the thickest Fruitland coals formed landward of thickly stacked sandstone beds of the regressive-marine Pictured Cliffs Sandstone. Transferability of the Fruitland coal model was tested by comparing it to another San Juan Basin coal-bearing rock unit, the lower Menefee Formation. Lower Menefee coal deposits were formed in association with the Point Lookout Sandstone, an older regressive-marine unit. The purpose of this comparison was to see if thick lower Menefee coal beds were also concentrated adjacent

SAN JUAN (AFP) - Living conditions in hurricane-ravaged Puerto Rico are growing worse by the day, with tired, bewildered people lining up to buy scarce fuel and food Sunday amid a blackout and little to no telephone service.. Puerto Ricans are spending hours waiting in line to buy whatever they can, but often go home empty-handed if they do not manage a purchase before a dusk to dawn curfew takes effect.. Cell phone service is spotty at best and hotels are also running out of diesel fuel for their generators.. The general manager of a Marriott hotel in the capital San Juan told guests that if they did not find diesel by Sunday night, the entire building would be evacuated.. Hurricane Maria slammed the US island territory before dawn Wednesday as a category 4 storm on the five-point Saffir-Simpson scale, as part of a vicious and deadly tear through the Caribbean.. The storm is blamed for 33 deaths, many of them on the tiny and poor island of Dominica and 13 in Puerto Rico.. Authorities are also ...
The campaign, a joint effort between the state Department of Public Health (DPH), Connecticut Airport Authority (CAA), federal Transportation Security Administration (TSA), and JetBlue, will focus on passengers traveling to and from San Juan, Puerto Rico on JetBlues two daily flights, but will also be seen by other travelers who may be connecting through other airports on their way to areas in the Caribbean, or Central/South America currently affected by Zika virus.. Puerto Rico has seen more than 1,700 Zika virus cases, including 191 in pregnant women. Last month, Puerto Rican health officials reported their first case of Zika-linked microcephaly.. Starting Friday, posters in both English and Spanish will be placed on the jet bridges for the flights to San Juan. The posters warn travelers to the American Tropics of the risk for mosquito-borne diseases, including Zika, and advise steps to avoid mosquito bites. Other posters focus on travelers returning from the American Tropics, providing ...
The public debt of Puerto Rico has grown at a faster pace than the growth of its economy, reaching $46.7 billion in 2008.[88] In January 2009, Governor Luis Fortuño enacted several measures aimed at eliminating the governments $3.3 billion deficit.[89] Since 2000, the government of Puerto Rico has experienced 19 consecutive negative cash flows which has contributed to the enlargement of its public debt, as the government incurs in new debt in order to pay the older one. On February 4, 2014 Standard & Poors downgraded the debt of Puerto Rico to junk status. Puerto Rico has roughly $70 billon outstanding debt for a population of four million inhabitants. Despite its small population it is the third issuer of municipal bonds in all 50 states and territories. First being California, second New York.[90] In early 2017, the Puerto Rican government-debt crisis posed serious problems for the government which was saddled with outstanding debt of $70 billion or $12,000 per capita[20] at a time with a ...
Fernando Pico is Puerto Ricos leading historian and author of over 20 books in Spanish and two translated into English.Less known is that he started his career as a columnist for the leading English-language newspaper in Puerto Rico, the "San Juan Star", from the early 1970s to the 1980s. At that time he was a free-wheeling young grad student and later a professor, and the editor of the newspaper often cut out his more radical commentary. Thus, Pico had to resort to oblique satire. These essays deal with continuity and change in Puerto Rico, and constitute a delightful San Juan reader from a thoughtful historians point of view. The themes range from Puerto Rican events observed from Paris, to politics encompassing the harassment of Puerto Rican dissenters in the early 1970s and the proliferation of referenda on the island, to lyrical descriptions of the disappearance of rural landscapes and cultural traditions. He describes bus riding etiquette and documents how neighborhoods were changing. He ...
By Workers World staff - Cuba, a sovereign socialist country, has been investing ample money and resources to nearly eliminate Aedes aegypti, the mosquito that carries Zika, dengue and chikungunya. Puerto Rico, as a colony of the United States, has been deprived of its political, economic and legal sovereignty, putting it at the mercy of the U.S. Congress and financial institutions. The island is expected to be hit hard by a surge of Zika over the next few months.. Zika arrived in Puerto Rico earlier than expected. As of March 23, there were already 258 locally acquired cases in Puerto Rico, including 35 pregnant women. (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). Only 20 percent of those who contract Zika show any of its mild, flu-like symptoms, but evidence shows that the virus can target fetal nerve cells, causing infants to be born with microcephaly - unusually small heads and incomplete brain development. Since Zika hit Brazil last year, a total of 863 cases of microcephaly have been ...

Asthma is a chronic disease that causes constriction of the airways. People with asthma may experience wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, and trouble breathing. Although asthma is a major public health problem among Puerto Ricans, little research has been done to determine the influence of heredity and environment on the disease in this population. To learn more about these relationships, this study will examine the effects of certain genes and allergens on the development and severity of asthma in Puerto Rican children.. This observational study will recruit both children with asthma and children without asthma. Participants will meet with study staff twice during the study. The first visit will take place at participants homes. Participants will complete questionnaires about demographics, respiratory and general health, and household characteristics. Lung function testing, collection of blood samples, and collection of household dust samples will also take place at the home-based visit. The ...

Insulin Autoantibodies: Evidence of Autoinmune Disease Among a Group of Puerto Rican Children with Newly Diagnosed Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus
New research indicates moderate to intense exercise in the elderly may be effective at reducing dementia and strokes. In comparing MRIs of the brain in those who exercised more intensely, researchers identified considerably less brain damage caused by blocked arteries as compared with those who exercised far less intensely. Interestingly, there was no difference in the brains of those who exercised with light intensity as compared with those who did not exercise at all. Although this study did not directly evaluate exercise intensity to the rates of dementia and stroke, the findings of increased brain blood flow and less brain damage strongly suggests moderate to intense exercise should significantly lower the incidence of dementia and stroke suffered by the elderly. According to the American Heart Association, 150 minutes of moderate-intensity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity exercise is recommended each week ...
Opioid use has been in the spotlight recently. From over-prescription, to abuse and addiction, to devastating long-term effects, the conversation about these controversial medications has even reached the federal level through opioid legislation. But the drug is now receiving attention in a new topic of discussion: motor vehicle accidents. A new study from the Oxford Journal Age and Ageing has demonstrated a possible link between opioid use and increased vehicle crash risk for individuals 50-80 years old. The results of this study demonstrated that older drivers using opioid medications doubled their risk of a single-vehicle crash against those using non-opioid analgesics. Previous studies have also suggested possible increased risk associated with driving while taking opioids, which further reinforces the known risks of opioid medications. For doctors of chiropractic, seeing patients who are taking opioid medications is all too familiar. This is because opioids are very commonly prescribed for ...

Dengue fever, a viral disease transmitted by the mosquito Aedes aegypti, can spread rapidly in explosive epidemics. In Puerto Rico, dengue is a seasonal disease estimated to be responsible for more than 1,000 hospitalizations annually. Dengue transmission is influenced by the behavior of Aedes aegypti, movement and distribution of humans, and virus development within the mosquito. The role of each of these factors is poorly understood, in part, because of the absence of studies on the spatialtemporal patterns of dengue cases. Furthermore, recent failures of mosquito control programs designed to reduce dengue transmission indicate that long standing assumptions about the dispersal of dengue virus by mosquitoes are incorrect. The spatial and temporal distribution of dengue cases reported to the Centers for Disease Controls dengue surveillance system during a 1991-92 outbreak in Florida, Puerto Rico, and a normal transmission season (May 1994 - June 1995) in Ponce, Puerto Rico, were studied using ...
