This project used multiple sources to draw together evidence and expertise in meta-narrative reviews. For each item we have included an explanation for why it is important and guidance on how it might be reported. Meta-narrative review is a relatively new method for evidence synthesis and as experie …

Producing literature reviews of complex evidence for policymaking questions is a challenging methodological area. There are several established and emerging approaches to such reviews, but unanswered questions remain, especially around how to begin to make sense of large data sets drawn from heterogeneous sources. Drawing on Kuhns notion of scientific paradigms, we developed a new method - meta-narrative review - for sorting and interpreting the 1024 sources identified in our exploratory searches. We took as our initial unit of analysis the unfolding storyline of a research tradition over time. We mapped these storylines by using both electronic and manual tracking to trace the influence of seminal theoretical and empirical work on subsequent research within a tradition. We then drew variously on the different storylines to build up a rich picture of our field of study. We identified 13 key meta-narratives from literatures as disparate as rural sociology, clinical epidemiology, marketing and

The scientific writing activity of Greek institutes in international journals for the five-year-period 2000-2014 is presented in the National Documentation Centres (EKT) new report Greek Scientific Publications 2000- 2014: bibliometric analysis of Greek publications in international scientific journals (in Greek). According to the main findings of the report, which used data from the Web of Science, Greek publications have maintained their high impact. In fact, the impact indicator for Greek publications over the five-year-period 2000-2014 surpassed the average for EU and OECD countries. The percentage of Greek publications cited also have continued to be higher than the average for EU and OECD countries. The number of publications produced in recent years has remained stable, with a slight decline after 2012, which was the year with the highest number of publications. If the number of publications in relation to the national expenditure on Research & development is taken into consideration, ...
TY - CONF. T1 - Operationalisation of realist synthesis as a PhD student; what works, for whom, and in what circumstances?. AU - Somervile, Susan. AU - Cooper, Christina. AU - Wilmot, Sarah. AU - Dalkin, Sonia. AU - Lhussier, Monique. PY - 2016/10/3. Y1 - 2016/10/3. N2 - Introduction: Operationalisation of realist methods can be challenging (Dalkin et al. 2015). Protocols and standards do exist in the literature to guide the process of realist informed research: Rycroft Malone et al (2012), Saul et al (2013), RAMESES (2013), Greenhalgh et al (2014) Blane et al (2015). However Realist methodologies are advocated for the exploration of complex interventions in a variety of subject areas and so are likely to require individually tailored approaches. This heterogeneity of process can affect the progress of novice realists, especially those who find themselves as doctoral students working more alone than is the norm in realist research. Objectives: This poster illustrates the approaches taken by ...
We identified studies that assessed the impact of publication bias in Medline (January 1993 to October 2003) using the search terms publication bias, citation bias, language bias, location bias, reference bias, or multiple publication bias. We also searched the references of a Cochrane review on publication bias.4 We restricted the search to publications that primarily investigated publication bias and whose acceptance therefore might have depended on whether they had found publication bias or not. We retrieved 265 references. Of these, we chose 148 for full examination. Their bibliographies yielded 26 additional papers. We excluded 148 studies because they gave no original data. All remaining 26 were included in the analysis (see bmj.com).. We used a funnel plot to evaluate reports for publication bias. In a funnel plot the effect size is plotted versus a measure of its precision, such as sample size. With increasing sample size, random variations of the effect are smaller. Thus, ...

Secondary publication is the subsequent republication, or simultaneous publication (sometimes called dual or parallel publication), of an article in 2 or more journals (in the same or another language) by mutual consent of the journal editors. Secondary publication can be beneficial. For example, the editors of an English-language journal and a non English-language journal may agree to secondary publication in translated form for the benefit of audiences who speak different languages. The ICMJE approves secondary publication if all of the following conditions are met: 1. The authors have received approval from the editors of both journals; the editor concerned with

According to State Statutes an unofficial publication of an Act is not enough to raise it to Law. Wisconsin State Statutes specifically allow that an Act will only become Law the day after the Secretary of State officially designates a date of publication. The Secretary of State officially rescinded the March 25th date, in light of a Court Order. Thus publication by the Legislative Reference Bureau (LRB), or anyone else, is irrelevant towards officially raising the Act to Law. Wis State Statute 991.11 acts....shall take effect on the day after its date of publication... Wis State Statute 35.095(1)(b)(b) Date of publication means the date designated by the secretary of state... The states Legislative Reference Bureau (LRB) went ahead and published the Act online on March 25th. The LRB cited a Statutory Law requiring a 10 day limit for publication as one of their two reasons for their publication of the Act (a request for publication by a Congressman Fitzgerald being the other ...
Epidemiological and experimental studies have suggested that exposure to particulate air pollution may promote progression of atherosclerosis. In the present study, the characteristics and trends of the research field of particulate matter (PM) and atherosclerosis were analyzed using bibliometric indicators. Bibliometric analysis was based on original papers obtained from PubMed/MEDLINE search results (from 1973 to 2014) using Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) terms. A fully-detailed search strategy was employed, and articles were imported into the Thomson Data Analyzer (TDA) software. The visualizing network of the collaborative researchers was analyzed by Ucinet 6 software. Main research topics and future focuses were explored by co-word and cluster analysis. The characteristics of these research articles were summarized. The number of published articles has increased from five for the period 1973-1978 to 89 for the period 2009-2014. Tobacco smoke pollution, smoke and air PM were the most studied
TY - JOUR. T1 - A bibliometric and citation analysis of stroke-related research in Taiwan. AU - Chuang, Kun-Yang. AU - Huang, Ya-Li. AU - Ho, Yu-Shan. PY - 2007/8. Y1 - 2007/8. N2 - As the population ages in Taiwan, stroke research has received greater attention in recent years. Strokes have significant impacts on the health and well-being of the elderly. To formulate future research policy, information on stroke publications should be collected. In this research, we studied stroke-related research articles published by Taiwan researchers which were indexed in the Science Citation Index from 1991 to 2005. We found that the quantity of publications has increased at a quicker pace than the worldwide trend. Over the years, there has been an increase in international collaboration, mainly with researchers in the U.S. Article visibility, measured as the frequency of being cited, also increased during the period. It appears that stroke research in Taiwan has become more globally connected and has also ...

Shared Decision-making (SDM), a medical decision-making model, was popularized in the late 1980s in reaction to then predominate paternalistic decision-making, aiming to better meet the needs of patients. Extensive research has been conducted internationally examining the benefits of SDM implementation; however, existing theory on how SDM works, for whom, in which circumstances, and why is limited. While literature has shown positive patient, health care provider, and system benefits (SDM outputs), further research is required to understand the nuances of this type of decision-making. As such, we set out to address:

Overall, the percentage of projects commissioned by the HTA Programme which are published in its journal is high, for those commissioned in 2002 or before 94% is published; for those commissioned after 2002, the figure rises to 98%. This number is well in excess of the figure of 50% quoted by Chalmers and Glasziou1 although it must be born in mind that their data related to studies initially presented as summaries or abstracts at professional meetings (which may include pilot or feasibility studies which do not progress to full studies), rather than commissioned projects, and so are likely to overestimate the publication rate. This rate is also higher than some other funders, for the National Institutes of Health in the USA, after a median of 51 months after trial completion, a third of trials remained unpublished.11. The strengths of this study were that it considered a large sample of projects from a major UK research funder, over a period of 18 years, encompassing a variety of research ...
