Spin control is crucial in this modern age of media hype and orchestrated public attacks. As a nation perpetually under siege, Israel has smartly hired one of New York Citys premier public relations firms, Rubenstein Associates, in NYC, in order to favorably mold world opinion, via media of all types including myriad print venues and broadcast news organizations. This beleaguered nation seeks to create a positive image and accompanying reputation, while simultaneously informing and persuading the international community, especially in relations to its conflict with the Palestinians. As a tiny sovereign entity surrounded by enemy Arab nations in the Middle East, Israel is vitally dependent upon the cooperation and assistance of other nations, most notably the United States and its salient financial support. The struggle for Israel is no less than its quest for survival.. And what is essential for Israel to communicate to the international community through the media? The Israelis must ...

When companies seek clever ways to leverage hot topics and gain some positive public relations in the process, it helps to vet the idea for relevance and the execution for tone. While Bisquicks product may be yummy, its #PancakesvsWaffles Twitter hashtag campaign lacked taste - and good judgment - all the way around.. The obvious reason was timing. It was a week that saw a nominee boast about groping women in the most vulgar terms, and the news media ate it up.. The link to the election was also questionable. Even if 2016 werent unprecedented for its family-unfriendly content, its not a logical association. PR pundits should ask themselves if its really intuitive to put pancakes and waffles alongside a political debate, especially in real time. Are breakfast foods a natural link to politics in your mind? No, theyre not. And the public didnt bite.. Almost immediately, Twitter was flooded with pleas to stop the blatant marketing tie-in and begged the question - do you want your wholesome ...

This study set out to explore the current usage and knowledge of new media as a public relations tool and channel amongst practicing public relations consultants in Australia. The research was motivated by a nationwide benchmarking study by de Bussy and Wolf (2009), which concluded that new media was an extremely low priority for Australian public relations practitioners. Taking into account the speed of change associated with new media adoption, the authors examine whether these findings are still true today. This study takes a qualitative approach, based on a critical analysis of semi-structured interviews with WA based Registered Consultancy Group (RCG) members of the Public Relations Institute of Australia (PRIA) (n=7). Findings suggest a cautious attitude towards the benefits of new media amongst RCG consultants. This is largely based on the assertion that the dynamics of basic communication principles and theories have not changed and that there is consequently no perceived pressure to ...

This article explores issues associated with organisational governance in the context of stakeholder engagement. It argues that both public relations (PR) research and practice have yet to address systematically the challenges inherent in this area, particularly how organisations exert power over stakeholders. Prompted by a consideration of the situational theory of power put forward by the sociologist Steven Lukes, it introduces the concept of passive aggression to PR practice. This is cited as an example of a wider phenomenon, which the author calls dark dialogue. The insights generated by these perspectives are used to highlight how theoretical approaches in the PR field that seek to understand and promote the role of dialogue in organisational-stakeholder relations face an empirical challenge. This insight is then used to highlight the limitations of what has been traditionally termed as social auditing. It is suggested that PR and social auditing practice share the same blind spots when it ...

JAMES HOGGAN: Well, let me give you an example. About a year ago, I was kind of shocked to find, reading a paper in Canada, that the premier of Alberta, where the tar sands are, decided that they were going to spend $25 million on a public relations campaign on the tar sands. And I was shocked because, well, this is the political year of the wealthiest province in Canada thinking that the tar sands was a public relations problem, not an environmental problem. And I think thats where the problems start, but they get worse because of the massive amount of money. Twenty-five million dollars is an enormous amount of money. It just overwhelms the system. So you just - youre able to hire the best researchers. Youre able to come up with the best messages. Youre able to hire the best PR firms. You can send out the most news releases. You can hire the best scientists for hire. And its just impossible for legitimate climate scientists to have a voice in these kinds of situations ...

It continues to amaze me how many clueless or sloppy PR pitches we get week in and week out. Just last week it ranged from obvious typos/grammatical errors to claims that a story was exclusive and unreleased when a quick check of Google Blog Search showed nothing less than 10 blogs had already posted on the topic. While these are not necessarily dealbreakers for coverage, the one that will guarantee a visit to the trash bin is blatant spin.. I realize as much as anyone, that the job of a public relations expert is to tell compelling stories. But there is a big difference between outright "spin" and a story that is genuinely interesting and newsworthy. Because I am in the public relations business, I may be more suspicious of this than most. But when a pitch relies on a sort of suspension of disbelief effect because of great storytelling, I consider that nothing less than public relations spam.. ...

Corporations put large amounts of money into advertising and sponsorships aimed at improving the corporate image and putting forward corporate views. Much of this advertising was on environmental issues. One 1974 survey of 114 large companies "found that 30 to 35 percent of corporate advertising addressed environmentalism, energy-related issues, or the capitalist system." Over $100 million dollars was being spent each year on this sort of advocacy advertising during the mid-1970s particularly by oil companies, electrical utility companies and the chemical industry.[20]. The Advertising Council became active. Using funds from the US Department of Commerce, it attempted to educate the public about the benefits of free enterprise, distributing millions of booklets to schools, workplaces and communities. It blamed inflation on government regulation. The idea for this campaign came from the chairman of the board of Procter and Gamble, the largest advertiser in the US, in a speech in which he called ...
This paper discusses the nature of extractive industries operating in less developed countries and the exploitative image they are faced with. In order to address this issue, this paper presents a thorough analysis of societal marketing by considering social initiatives undertaken by corporations to enhance wellfare in the host country. The positive attributes of societal marketing are emphasized through bottom up development and exemplified through LAMCO case study. These factors, along with the invloved actors, all contribute to the enhancement of the corporate image.. ...
Are smokers of today aware that during World War I cigarettes were considered tasteless and unmanly? Most men preferred cigars, pipes, and chewing tobacco. At the time cigarettes proved to be more convenient in the trenches and our government began putting cigarettes in soldiers rations. Many soldiers changed their method of acquiring tobacco shortly thereafter. Cigarettes became known as the choice of warriors, because of this simple marketing tactic used by The American Tobacco Company. As profits started to skyrocket from the increase of mens cigarette smoking, it became evident a marketing scheme must be developed to attract women smokers.. Beginning in the 1920s Edward L. Bernays was one of the first and most successful public relations experts of his time. Many consider Bernays to be the Father of Public Relations. His precedent-setting marketing campaigns for the American Tobacco Company, climaxed when he staged a parade of cigarette-smoking debutantes marching down Fifth Avenue on ...
Charles Ryan Associates of Charleston officially took over as the state tourism advertising contractor, effective July 1. According to Alisa Bailey, Director of Marketing for the Division of Tourism, this contract transformed its purpose and composition since it was last bid nearly three years ago.. When we pre-pared the Request for Proposal and later made the award, we were looking to have the ultimate contract that identified a full service marketing agency, she said. We defined in the proposal three factors: marketing, advertising and public relations. As part of the contract, we know for a fact that the public relations, advertising and marketing needs that most impact the state have been obtained. We took the multi-layer approach.. The contract, worth nearly $250,000 to the West Virginia firm, requires their assistance to the Division of Tourism in the cultivation of editorial by travel and business media, thus, providing more publicity on state tourist attractions and events. Bailey ...
The messages in Still a Problem revolve around the impact tobacco has on Minnesotas health, economy and youth, as well as the role the tobacco industry has in perpetuating the consequences of tobacco use. The new menthol messaging is tied to youth, as menthol is an additive that makes it easier to start smoking and harder to quit, and was exempted from the FDAs 2009 ban on flavored cigarettes ...
Merck and Schering-Plough, which co-marketed the cholesterol drug Vytorin, went into damage-control mode taking out newspaper ads, reported Advertising Age in January 2008. The pharmaceutical companies public relations campaign followed their reluctant publication of a study which revealed that neither drug in present in Vytorin reduced fatty plaque build-up in arteries. The study was completed in 2006, but Merck and Schering did not release it for 21 months, allegedly due to "complexity of the data and their own scientific concerns." The drug companies newspaper ads, which ran in the New York Times and USA Today, referred to the damning study as "a single study that has generated a lot of confusion." They stressed that the drugs "have been proven to lower LDL (bad) cholesterol." However, the study showed was that Vytorin was not "any better than generic Zocor in reducing the buildup of fatty plaque." Members of Congress called for an investigation into why the "massive advertisement campaign ...
Was this a prospective study?". It is Nick Naylors fate in life to have a career that summons the sardonic grin to the faces of his countrymen. Naylor, the hero of Christopher Buckleys novel Thank You for Smoking, is the spokesman for the Academy of Tobacco Studies, which presents the industrys viewpoint to a skeptical (and increasingly antismoking) nation. It is his duty and his burden to remind us that there are two sides to the tobacco question, that the anti-smoking side is comprised of equal parts greed and hysteria and little else, that the thousands of former smokers on respirators or chemotherapy are grasping at straws in their extremity, and that the American People can make up its own mind about whether to smoke or not, dammit. And if this means nitpicking unto infinity about arcane technical points from the New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, or the British Medical Journal, then so be it. His only gratitude comes from the tobacco company that pays his salary, and his only ...

San Franciscos "Street Action Team" is expected to redesign streets for slower speeds, which is one of the most effective ways to save lives, but one tool not available to them is lower speed limits. Portland, whose traffic safety record is exemplary, added an abundance of 15 and 20 mph zones. California law makes these changes impossible. The only place where speeds can be that low is in some school zone and alleys. Enforcement by speed camera, the most efficient method of enforcing the law, is not an option.. Attempts to change speed limit laws have met regular resistance in Sacramento but CalBike is committed to building the coalition that will enable local leaders to implement these crucial aspects of a Vision Zero campaign. An essential part of that will be a coalition of cities calling for the freedom to lower their speed limits and create livable cities. We join with the SF Bicycle Coalition in calling on Mayor Lee to take action for safer streets beyond a public relations campaign to ...

Tuckers warning went unheeded even by his own company. A yr later, in 1989, 50 U.S. firms and trade teams created the worldwide Local weather Coalition (GCC) to discredit local weather science. Its founding members included API, British Petroleum (now BP), Chevron, Exxon, Shell, Texaco and … Mobil.. Till it disbanded in 2002, GCC conducted a multimillion-dollar lobbying and public relations campaign to undermine national and worldwide efforts to deal with international warming. One among its fact sheets for legislators and journalists, for instance, claimed "the position of greenhouse gases in local weather change shouldnt be nicely understood" and emphasized that "scientists differ" on the problem.. An inner 1995 GCC primer included in the UCS report, nevertheless, signifies that the coalitions own scientific and technical consultants had been telling its members that greenhouse gases had been indeed causing global warming.. "The scientific basis for the Greenhouse Impact and the potential ...

David M. Klurfeld. The article by Dupont et al. [1] addresses the effects of saturated and hydrogenated fats on health and reflects the prevailing opinion that a decrease in saturated fat intake, indicated primarily for lowering serum cholesterol levels. is warranted. In reviewing the multiple facets of this issue, Dupont et al. touch on the tropical oils controversy, which has become a significant consumer nutrition issue of the last few years. Major corporations scrambled to reformulate products so that specific fats were removed from the ingredients statement, while denying there was any scientific justification for this.. To understand the tropical oils question, one must first remember what is behind this name. There are no legal or scientific definitions of tropical oils. This was a term created by the American Soybean Association (ASA) as part of a public relations campaign in a trade war with the producers of palm oil. However. in common use the term refers to palm, palm kernel, and ...
In death, as in life, Yasser Arafat lit the flames of the Palestinian struggle for freedom and dignity. If he did nothing else he made certain that the Palestinian struggle for liberty and justice would be taken seriously by the rest of the world. When Golda Meir claimed that there were no Palestinians he proved her wrong. And when Ariel Sharon labeled him irrelevant he demonstrated to the whole world that the Palestinian cause was as central as ever to international peace and security. Arafat s personal physical courage even in his old age was an inspiration to his people. He was free to pack his bags and head for Paris anytime he wanted to. But he chose to endure the last three years of his life as a virtual prisoner of Sharon. It was easy for armchair generals and Arab intellectuals to second-guess Arafat from the comfortable distance of European and Middle Eastern capitals. But Yasser wasn t running a public relations campaign he was charting the destiny of his people. I, for one, am guilty ...
I know somewhat how he felt. I live in a culture that has given up sane standards of behavior, and has jettisoned consistency. I come from a time when there was the Correct, and there was the Aberrant. The Aberrant was viewed as alien, mistrusted, and often ridiculed. What a difference a couple of generations (and PR.) makes. What was once villified as the Sin Not to be Named has become a Civic Virtue, and Normal. A decades-long public relations campaign has paid off. For as long as, the homosexual, the mincing, lisping fageler, has been a mainstay of funmaking. Practically every country ridicules homosexual activity and lifestyle. Anime series often have a homosexual character displaying unrequited feelings for the main character for comic relief. We know what aint quite right, and humor reveals it. As to cultural inconsistency, our alleged science-mad society completely ignores the Darwinist and Gouldian evolutionary dogmas to accept homosexuality as anything other than what those very ...
To many Florida developers in the last decade, downtown condo towers seemed to make a lot of sense. They were sold as the logical locale for active seniors and millennials, great affordable starter homes, and best of all, investments. Reinvigorating downtowns became fashionable currency in many of Floridas second and third tier cities. Sadly, many of these new structures have turned into hulking shadows today in places such as Delray Beach, Tampa, and Orlando. Many of Floridas core urban districts suffer the dark windows, unoccupied balconies, vacant storefronts and wide open sidewalks that signify the opposite of thriving urbanity. Repairing this false renaissance in downtowns requires city leaders to see the central business district for what it really is: just another suburb needing attention to stay healthy, safe, and productive.. Suburbs are heavily marketed by their developers with product launches, public relations campaigns and lavish sales centers. Downtowns, on the other hand, ...

Jack Dolan of the Los Angeles Times takes Californias stem cell agency (California Institute of Regenerative Medicine- CIRM) to task for the exorbitant salaries paid to its executives, while other California agencies cut back and the state wrestles with covering an enormous budget deficit.. Investment banker Jonathan Thomas was elected the new chairman on June 22, beating out cardiologist and entrepreneur Frank Litvack for the position. Thomas will take a salary of $400,000 to serve as part-time board chairman, joining CIRMs president Alan Trounson ($490,008 salary last year) as two of the most highly-paid state employees.. As the California Stem Cell Report pointed out at the time, political and financial pressure had a great deal to do with Thomas winning the chairmanship, not so much science.. Thomas and others at CIRM have indicated that they are simply misunderstood, and need better public relations. They are advertising for a new public relations director (salary up to $208,520 per year) ...

If the shelter arbitrarily euthanizes every dog in the shelter because of an outbreak, considering that diagnostic tools are now available, it could turn into a public relations nightmare," Dr. Schultz points out. In many communities, the handling of an outbreak by a shelter or animal control agency attracts a great deal of attention from rescue groups, activists, and the media. Coverage of protests, mass depopulation, and public criticism can hamper fundraising and budget negotiation efforts for years to come.. On the other hand, using innovative and modern practices to prevent and respond to disease outbreaks can be a public relations bonanza. "These diagnostic tests are cost effective in saving lives by being able to move animals into new homes faster, ensuring that they are healthy and protected from these diseases, and thereby promoting your shelter as a humane, progressive animal shelter that is highly regarded in the community," said Dr. Schultz.. Becoming known as a shelter that does ...

previous post , next post » Sometimes the New York Times stylebook makes life hard for its writers, and interesting for those of its readers who like cloze tests. According to Michael Barbaro, "A Mood of Gloom Afflicts the Romney Campaign", NYT 9/18/2012:. A palpably gloomy and openly frustrated mood has begun to creep into Mr. Romneys campaign for president. Well practiced in the art of lurching from public relations crisis to public relations crisis, his team seemed to reach its limit as it digested a ubiquitous set of video clips that showed their boss candidly describing nearly half of the countrys population as government-dependent "victims," and saying that he would "kick the ball down the road" on the biggest foreign policy challenge of the past few decades, the Palestinian-Israeli peace process.. Grim-faced aides acknowledged that it was an unusually dark moment, made worse by the self-inflicted, seemingly avoidable nature of the wound. In low-volume, out-of-the-way conversations, a ...
