The history of social policy has a clear lesson. Programs that benefit all citizens do more to reduce poverty than programs targeted to the poor. So a new strategy for gamily security makes more sense than another War on Poverty.

Downloadable! The success of individual firms can illustrate lessons learned from economy-wide research on how public policy and private company policy affect the development of the services sector. This review of some 14 case studies of large international services firms shows that three factors are common to their success: (1) Many successful services companies examined owe their existence and success to the opening up of markets; (2) The opening up of markets enabled new entrants to take another step towards success, namely innovation. Such innovation - either in terms of processes or products - helps firms to differentiate themselves from other, often more traditional, firms. The strong focus on innovation is often associated with an important role of venture or risk capital. In many cases, successful services firms were also pioneers in introducing information and communication technology (ICT) and developing other key technology applications; and (3) A motivating work organisation. I believe people are hungry for non-partisan, evidence-based solutions to public problems.. Between the federal, state, and local governments, we spend over $7 trillion a year on government in the United States. Are we getting our moneys worth? Its doubtful, but we are taking steps in the right direction. Virtually all new grants and programs require organizations to use the methods of public policy to measure the impacts of their programs. We are still in our relative infancy as a field, but I believe the prospects are incredibly bright to improve the efficacy of our programs aimed at improving peoples lives.. As for my research, Im most excited about a current project that Im working on with University of Redlands undergraduates Sera Gearhart and Lidya Stamper. Together were examining the effects that a countrys economic inequality has on its educational performance. The results are very large and statistically significant. Excessive levels of economic inequality can be very damaging to ...

The AFNs rebuke on what they believed to be "co-development" of environmental legislation illustrates the significant challenges the Liberals face as they look to put those principles in practice. Rather than insist on the right to free, prior and information consent, the Liberals principles for relations with Indigenous people says the government "aims to secure" their consent "when Canada proposes to take actions which impact them and their rights, including their lands, territories and resources." Mr. Carr said last week that the government must strike a balance among interests when assessing major projects like pipelines and mines.. ...
Government neglect in the delivery of basic services to the people is most keenly felt by the masses, especially those in depressed areas in urban centers and in the countryside. At present, some of the basic services needed by the people are being provided by the revolutionary forces in the guerrilla fronts through campaigns and programs such as those in literacy, health care, and productive activities.. It is anticipated that inflation, upon the overthrow of the reactionary government, scarcities of some goods, production breakdowns, speculation and other ills that attend the decline and final collapse of the puppet regime will be carried over into the early years of the new government. The new government shall take swift and decisive steps to control and solve these problems by judicious use of political power and by reviving production and the delivery of social services as soon as possible as the new state passes through a period of reconstruction and rehabilitation.. The full recovery and ...

Background: one of the toughest decisions PPP had to make in conducting its polls last year was whether to weight for party id. Ultimately we decided not to. The main reason was that we really werent sure, if we did weight for party id, what numbers we should be using. Should we use past exit polls? The most recent Gallup data? The most recent Pew data? What if party id shifted back and forth over the course of the year in relation to various events? Weighting to an out of date or incorrect party id target in a particular state could foul up an otherwise well conducted poll. Ultimately we decided just to weight for gender, race, and age and let party id fall where it fell and given that a Wall Street Journal analysis of swing state pollsters soon after the election showed us as one of the two most accurate in the country I dont regret it ...

The 2010 UNRISD flagship report, Combating Poverty and Inequality, highlights three interrelated sets of issues for effective and sustained progress in alleviating poverty: employment-centred growth and structural change that improves incomes; comprehensive social policies that are grounded in universal rights and that are supportive of structural change, social cohesion and democratic politics; and political arrangements that ensure states are responsive to the needs of citizens and the poor have influence in how polices are made. The report makes the point that for countries with high levels of agricultural employment, progress cannot be made without improving the productivity, incomes and well-being of smallholders, whose livelihoods depend on agriculture and who can provide a strong foundation for food security ...
APTAs public policy priorities for 2013-2014 were posted this week on APTAs website for members and public audiences, representing issues to which APTA will direct its efforts in the 113th Congress and federal agencies. Initially adopted by the Board of Directors in November 2012, the priority list has been adjusted to reflect implications of the fiscal cliff legislation and sequestration, such as the multiple procedural payment reduction (MPPR) and a Blue-Ribbon Commission report on the future of rehabilitation research at the National Institutes of Health.. Every 2 years, APTA, through its Public Policy and Advocacy Committee, develops public policy priorities by gathering extensive member feedback on the issues that matter to your practice and patients. The committee will continue to update and revise the priorities as challenges and opportunities emerge over the next 2 years.. This list does not include all issues for which the association is advocating to advance physical therapy ...

Andrew,. I am happy that you appreciate diagreements, because I really do disagree. You have the strong policy recommendations in your title, so you should be able to back them up. But all you really have is a rather vague "seems that some policy implications are involved." If that is all you can actually argue, you should retract the earlier allegations. The irony is that you make strong allegations without much basis in a piece in which you criticize just that. If what you provide is - by your own admission - "not necessarily "strong" recommendations" (though this has a slight aftertaste of snark, if I am not mistaken), you should not anchor your piece on them being exactly that.. But I even doubt the "recommendations" part. There are three instances in which I see policy relevance (as claimed by Tol), one in the negative: a) whatever initial benefits (of warming) there are (not), they are sunk and thusly not policy relevant; b) total damage estimates are bad and uncertainty is huge and skewed ...
