While The Pump Handle is on holiday break, we are republishing some of our favorite posts from the past year. This one is from July 2016: In 2005, the World Health Assembly adopted a revised version of its International Health Regulations, a legally binding treaty among 196 nations to boost global health security and strengthen the worlds capacity to confront serious disease threats such as Ebola and SARS. A decade later, just one-third of countries have the ability to respond to a public health emergency. Thats why Rebecca Katz thinks its time to get creative.
Foreign companies may be wary of investing in a location that lacks the capacity to mitigate the consequences of disease or exposes workers to dangerous pathogens, write Katz and Seifman. Yet, many nations lack the resources to build sufficient capacity to prevent, detect and respond to disease without sufficient investments and improve economic status. Katz and Seifman propose a solution that would incentivize potential investors while at the same time encourage development of public health systems to prevent, detect and respond to outbreaks. The two propose that guarantees to potential external investors be provided through an existing mechanism called the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA), part of the World Bank Group. MIGA is designed to guarantee private investors concerned about risks, which impact the decision of whether or not to invest. The researchers say its Articles of Establishment provide flexibility in interpreting what these risks might be and in calculating ...

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has warned that there will likely be more cases within the U.S., but at this time they do not believe there will be the kind of widespread outbreaks here as there have been in South America.. President Obama has requested $1.8 billion in emergency funding in his Fiscal Year 2017 budget to prepare for and respond to the Zika virus. The Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education and Related Agencies is holding a hearing today to review the request. TFAH supports the request for emergency funding, but emphasizes the need for consistent support for the nations public health infrastructure.. The reports that the Zika virus may be related to a steep increase in birth defects in infants ...

Last month, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared a global public health emergency in response to the outbreak of the Zika virus in Brazil and other Latin American countries. The WHO estimates the virus has spread to 52 countries to date and can infect up to 4 million people by years end. While the symptoms of the virus are moderate, it is strongly suspected the disease causes brain damage in newborns. In this Policy Alert, we examine commentary from Brazil, China, India, Russia, Japan, and South Korea on the Zika outbreak.. BRAZIL. Its completely understandable that everyone wants to know, When can we go out again. But the question we must answer is: What do we have to do, right now, so we reopen as soon and safely as possible?. A key concept is that we need to reopen the faucet gradually, not allow the floodgates to reopen. We can then loosen or tighten physical distancing according to levels of virus transmission, healthcare preparedness and public health capacity.. A cross-sectional study was undertaken to analyse the impact of the 2009 influenza A(H1N1) pandemic on frontline public health workers in the Netherlands and to consider its implications for future pandemics. A structured, self-administered questionnaire was made available online (26 March to 26 May 2010) for frontline public health workers employed by the communicable disease departments of the public health services in the Netherlands (n=302). A total of 166 questionnaires (55%) were completed. The majority of respondents reported an increased workload, perceived as too busy (117 respondents, 70.5%) or extreme (13 respondents, 7.8%). Most respondents were not anxious about becoming infected (only seven were regularly concerned). The overall compliance with the control measures was good. The case definition was strictly applied by 110 of the 166 respondents (66%); 56 of 141 (39.7%) consistently consulted the Preparedness and Response Unit within a centralised assessment system, while 68 of 141 (48.2%)

Epidemiology. Epidemiology is the study of the distribution and determinants of disease in human populations. Epidemiology is often referred to as the basic science of public health because it is so central to public health practice and research. Tracking the distribution of disease and risk factors for disease is accomplished through surveillance. Studies of the determinants of disease span a spectrum from the molecular basis of disease causation to lifestyle and social factors to societal factors that influence health and disease.. Research Opportunities. The epidemiology faculty is engaged in research that encompasses these domains applied to a broad range of health outcomes that includes aging, cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, infectious disease, injury/trauma, neurological disorders, oral health, tobacco and other substance use, and perinatal/reproductive conditions. A cross-cutting theme in common to much of this research is a focus on health disparities. The goal of this novel, ...
