However, syndromic surveillance is the term that has persisted. In defining syndromic surveillance, certain authors have emphasized the importance of monitoring the frequency of illnesses with a specific set of clinical features (18), a definition that does not account for nonclinical data sources. Others have emphasized the importance of prediagnostic data to estimate a communitys health status, particularly by relying on outpatient visits (19). Inherent in the use of existing electronic data to describe prediagnostic health indicators is the central role of timeliness in the analysis, detection, and investigation of alerts. Perhaps the most comprehensive definition to date, and likely the one to be broadly adopted, is provided by CDCs evaluation framework, which describes syndromic surveillance as an investigational approach where health department staff, assisted by automated data acquisition and generation of statistical alerts, monitor disease indicators in real-time or near real-time to ...

Bovine abortion surveillance is essential for human and animal health because it plays an important role in the early warning of several diseases. Due to the limited sensitivity of traditional surveillance systems, there is a growing interest for the development of syndromic surveillance. Our objective was to assess whether, routinely collected, artificial insemination (AI) data could be used, as part of a syndromic surveillance system, to devise an indicator of mid-term abortions in dairy cattle herds in France. A mid-term abortion incidence rate (MAIR) was computed as the ratio of the number of mid-term abortions to the number of female-weeks at risk. A mid-term abortion was defined as a return-to-service (i.e. a new AI) taking place 90 to 180 days after the previous AI. Weekly variations in the MAIR in heifers and parous cows were modeled with a time-dependent Poisson model at the département level (French administrative division) during the period of 2004 to 2010. The usefulness of monitoring this
One of the primary principles of the Animal Health Safeguarding Review (2001) was that the United States must have a comprehensive, coordinated, and integrated animal health surveillance system. Veterinary Services has historically conducted animal health surveillance through a number of systems, mostly focused on disease eradication programs and passive reporting of foreign animal diseases. While both of these systems have been effective in meeting their established goals, they do not provide a comprehensive overview necessary to appropriately allocate resources and to assure international trading partners of the health of the Nations herd ...

Updated 5/4/20. As part of Minnesotas overall surveillance efforts, MDH urgently needs data that tells us more about who is seeking care in a hospital setting for symptoms that may be related to COVID-19. This syndromic surveillance effort requires MDH to be able to compute ratios of the volume of inpatient and emergency department patients presenting with COVID or COVID-like symptoms as a function of total daily emergency department and hospital patient volume. This will enable monitoring of hot-spots as social distancing policies are adjusted and assist in the states response effort.. MDH is utilizing an existing service to support this activity. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, beginning a few years ago, the Department of Human Services (DHS) funded the Encounter Alert Service (EAS) infrastructure to support statewide care coordination. MDH has been working with DHS to leverage this existing EAS infrastructure to fulfill the syndromic surveillance use case since more than half of the ...
Statistical methods for the modeling and monitoring of time series of counts, proportions and categorical data, as well as for the modeling of continuous-time point processes of epidemic phenomena. The monitoring methods focus on aberration detection in count data time series from public health surveillance of communicable diseases, but applications could just as well originate from environmetrics, reliability engineering, econometrics, or social sciences. The package implements many typical outbreak detection procedures such as the (improved) Farrington algorithm, or the negative binomial GLR-CUSUM method of Höhle and Paul (2008) ,doi:10.1016/j.csda.2008.02.015,. A novel CUSUM approach combining logistic and multinomial logistic modeling is also included. The package contains several real-world data sets, the ability to simulate outbreak data, and to visualize the results of the monitoring in a temporal, spatial or spatio-temporal fashion. A recent overview of the available monitoring ...

Link to Pubmed [PMID] - 17490909. Transfus Clin Biol 2007 May;14(1):16-7. Many emerging diseases (AIDS, SARS, avian flu) are related to viral zoonoses, which have crossed the interspecies barrier. The improvement of epidemiological surveillance has allowed live monitoring of epidemic progresses, while new molecular biological tools have allowed analysis of the various steps required for viral adaptation to their new hosts. These observations suggest lower transmissibility of viral strains at the start of epidemics. It is therefore essential to strengthen public health surveillance systems, so that swift moves can be made before viruses get adapted to humans. Early control measures will be more efficient.. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17490909 ...

BMI is the core scientific discipline that supports applied research and practice in several biomedical disciplines, including health informatics, which is composed of clinical informatics (including subfields such as medical, nursing, and dental informatics) and public health informatics (sometimes referred to more broadly as population informatics to capture its inclusion of global health informatics). There are related notions, such as consumer health informatics, which involves elements of both clinical and public health informatics. BMI in turn draws on the practical experience of the applied subspecialties, and works in the context of clinical and public health systems and organizations to develop experiments, interventions, and approaches that will have scalable impact in solving health informatics problems. However, it is the depth of informatics methods, shared across the spectrum from the molecular to the population levels that defines the core discipline of BMI and provides its ...

Death statistics are compiled from death certificates which are filed by state law with the Bureau of Epidemiology and Public Health Informatics at the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. The death certificate system has been in place in Kansas continuously since 1911, although changes in data items and definitions have taken place over the years. The denominator for rates is the population of residents. Kansas cooperates with other states in the exchange of death records. Therefore, data concerning deaths of Kansas residents include virtually all Kansas resident deaths regardless of where the death took place. See residency definitions. Cause of death in these tables refers to the underlying cause of death. The underlying cause of death is defined as the disease or injury which initiated the chain of events leading directly to death, or the circumstances of the accident or violence which produced the fatal injury. The causes of death presented here are classified in accordance with ...

West Nile virus (WNV) is a growing public health concern in Europe and there is a need to develop more efficient early detection systems. Nervous signs in horses are considered to be an early indicator of WNV and, using them in a syndromic surveillance system, might be relevant. In our study, we assessed whether or not data collected by the passive French surveillance system for the surveillance of equine diseases can be used routinely for the detection of WNV. We tested several pre-processing methods and detection algorithms based on regression. We evaluated system performances using simulated and authentic data and compared them to those of the surveillance system currently in place. Our results show that the current detection algorithm provided similar performances to those tested using simulated and real data. However, regression models can be easily and better adapted to surveillance objectives. The detection performances obtained were compatible with the early detection of WNV outbreaks in ...
Syndromic surveillance is increasingly used to signal unusual illness events. To validate data-source selection, we retrospectively investigated the extent to which 6 respiratory syndromes (based on different medical registries) reflected respiratory pathogen activity. These syndromes showed higher levels in winter, which corresponded with higher laboratory counts of Streptococcus pneumoniae, respiratory syncytial virus, and influenza virus. Multiple linear regression models indicated that most syndrome variations (up to 86%) can be explained by counts of respiratory pathogens. Absenteeism and pharmacy syndromes might reflect nonrespiratory conditions as well. We also observed systematic syndrome elevations in the fall, which were unexplained by pathogen counts but likely reflected rhinovirus activity. Earliest syndrome elevations were observed in absenteeism data, followed by hospital data (+1 week), pharmacy/general practitioner consultations (+2 weeks), and deaths/laboratory submissions (test ...

0132]The creation of the data stream 70 is further restricted by the following constraints in order to enable the detection of the first VCL NAL unit of a primary coded picture: [0133]w) Any coded slice NAL unit or coded slice data partition A NAL unit of the primary coded picture of the current access unit shall be different from any coded slice NAL unit or coded slice data partition A NAL unit of the primary coded picture of the previous access unit in one or more of the following ways. [0134]frame num differs in value. frame_num is an identifier in each VCL NAL unit indicating the picture 12 of the video 10a it belongs to. A value of frame_num may be assigned to more than one picture or access unit, but the value of frame_num in the payload data of the VCL NAL unit of successive access units 74 may not be the same. In other words, frame_num is used as a unique identifier for each short-term reference frame. For example, when the current picture is an IDR picture, frame_num shall be equal to ...
Originally posted by the ACLU of Northern California.. Today, the ACLU of Northern California went to court in two separate cases with the same goal: shedding light on the governments use of controversial and arguably unconstitutional surveillance techniques. In the first, we filed a motion to unseal secret court papers authorizing the government to use a device called a stingray to track an individuals location. In the second, we filed a new lawsuit to force federal prosecutors to disclose their policies, practices and procedures for tracking cell phones.. Last week, the New York Times reported on the rise of a secret docket on a scale that has no parallels in American history. This docket consists of government requests to engage in various novel forms of electronic surveillance - including tracking peoples movements through their cell phones. According to a federal judge profiled in the article, there were more than 30,000 sealed electronic surveillance orders issued in one recent year ...

It has been clear for much time that cigarette smoking is harmful to the health of smokers and non-smokers alike. Listed below is an incomplete list of the harmful effects of both second-hand and mainstream smoke. Also below is a link to an informative and helpful website from the The New York City Department of Health and Men. Although most of us know that smoking increases ones risk for a variety of cancers, most notably lung cancer, many are unaware of the other harmful effects of smoking. As we go through our studies, we will identify those not-so-obvious effects of smoking. This list is under construction and is by no means exhaustive!. Specific references for some of the conditions can be found below. Otherwise, the information can be readily found in Robbins Pathologic Basis of Disease, 7th Ed.. ...
Based on comments received on the Draft Generic Environmental Impact Statement for the Fresh Kills Park project, it was determined by the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation (DPR) that a Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement (SEIS) would be prepared that focuses on the proposed East Park roads. The purpose of the SEIS is to provide a targeted and detailed analysis of the proposed East Park roads, as well as an examination of proposed alternatives. Since these segments of the proposed roads require a number of critical discretionary approvals from state and federal agencies, it is intended that the Draft SEIS (DSEIS) will address the environmental issues and concerns of these agencies through a coordinated environmental review under the direction of DPR.. As part of the SEIS process, a scoping meeting was held to provide the public and all interested and involved agencies with the opportunity to comment on the Draft Scope of Work to prepare a DSEIS. The purpose of the Scope of ...

Non-expenditure health care data provide information on institutions providing health care in countries, on resources used and on output produced in the framework of health care provision. Data on health care form a major element of public health information as they describe the capacities available for different types of health care provision as well as potential bottlenecks observed. The quantity and quality of health care services provided and the work sharing established between the different institutions are a subject of ongoing debate in all countries. Sustainability - continuously providing the necessary monetary and personal resources needed - and meeting the challenges of ageing societies are the primary perspectives used when analysing and using the data. The output-related data (activities) refer to contacts between patients and the health care system, and to the treatment thereby received. Data are available for hospital discharges of in-patients and day cases, average length of stay of
One of the major factors contributing to this epidemic is a systemic disconnect between primary care physicians and psychiatrists or therapists. In response to the damning report by the NASMHP, experts like Massachusetts state medical director Mary Ellen Foti suggest a nationwide move toward a better organized system of co-location whereby patients suffering from serious mental illnesses can receive physical examinations and treatments on or near the very same premises, making the process much more convenient and facilitating the crucial relationship between the two related practices. In order to better measure and contain the epidemic, they recommend increased tracking of mentally ill patients, maintaining a national health surveillance system specifically for psychiatric patients. They also believe that increased federal funding for concerns like smoking cessation weight reduction among the mentally ill population will ultimately reduce the number and severity of their cases, ultimately making ...
