This study was conducted to assess caries treatment thresholds among Japanese dentists and to identify characteristics associated with their decision to intervene surgically in proximal caries lesions within the enamel. Participants (n = 189) were shown radiographic images depicting interproximal caries and asked to indicate the lesion depth at which they would surgically intervene in both high- and low-caries-risk scenarios. Differences in treatment thresholds were then assessed via chi-square tests, and associations between the decision to intervene and dentist, practice, and patient characteristics were analyzed via logistic regression. The proportion of dentists who indicated surgical intervention into enamel was significantly higher in the high-caries-risk scenario (73.8%, N = 138) than in the low-caries-risk scenario (46.5%, N = 87) (p < 0.001). In multivariate analyses for a high-caries-risk scenario, gender of dentist, city population, type of practice, conducting caries-risk assessment, ...
When can my child begin early orthodontic treatment?. Pediatric dentists recognize three age-related stages of orthodontic treatment. These stages are described in detail below.. Stage 1: Early treatment (2-6 years old). Early orthodontic treatment aims to guide and regulate the width of both dental arches. The main goal of early treatment is to provide enough space for the permanent teeth to erupt correctly. Good candidates for early treatment include: children who have difficulty biting properly, children who lose baby teeth early, children whose jaws click or grind during movement, bruxers, and children who use the mouth (as opposed to the nose AND mouth) to breathe.. During the early treatment phase, your pediatric dentist works with parents and children to eliminate orthodontically harmful habits, like excessive pacifier use and thumb sucking. The dentist may also provide one of a variety of dental appliances to promote jaw growth, hold space for adult teeth (space maintainers), or to ...

EDITORIALS. Oral health, general health and quality of life. Aubrey Sheiham. Professor of Dental Public Health, Department of Epidemiology and Public Health, University College London Medical School, University College London, 1 19 Torrington Place, London WC1E 6BT, England (email: [email protected]). The compartmentalization involved in viewing the mouth separately from the rest of the body must cease because oral health affects general health by causing considerable pain and suffering and by changing what people eat, their speech and their quality of life and well-being. Oral health also has an effect on other chronic diseases (1). Because of the failure to tackle social and material determinants and incorporate oral health into general health promotion, millions suffer intractable toothache and poor quality of life and end up with few teeth.. Health policies should be reoriented to incorporate oral health using sociodental approaches to assessing needs and the common risk factor approach ...

Objective. Focusing on 70-year-old adults in Sweden and guided by the conceptual framework of International Classification of Impairments, Disabilities and Handicaps (ICIDH), the purpose of this study was to examine the extent to which socio-demographic characteristics, self-reported oral disease and social/psychological/physical oral health outcome variables are associated with two global measures of self-assessed satisfaction with oral health in Swedish 70-year-olds and if there is a degree of discordance between these global questions. Background. It has become an important task to create a simple way to measure self-perceived oral health. In these attempts to find practical ways to measure health, the global oral health question is a possible tool to measure self-rated oral health, but there is limited knowledge about how important the wording of this question is. Materials and methods. In 2012, a questionnaire was mailed to all persons born in 1942 in two Swedish counties, Orebro (T) and ...

Youve been concerned for some time about your childs bite, so youve visited an orthodontist for an evaluation. Even though your child is quite young and still with primary teeth, the orthodontist recommends they begin wearing a retainer device, with the possibility of braces in a few years.. That may at first sound like an overly extensive treatment plan. For certain bite problems, however, undergoing an early stage of orthodontic treatment could reduce or even eliminate the need for more advanced and costly treatment later.. An example of such a problem is a crossbite, also known as an underbite. With this type of malocclusion (bad bite) the lower front teeth bite in front of the upper front teeth rather than behind them as in a normal bite relationship. Because the teeth and jaws are still in development (including the primary teeth, which are preparing the path for the permanent teeth erupting later), wearing a retainer device could exert just enough pressure to influence the teeth toward ...

That is twice as many as the U.S. workforce as a whole, Jacobs said.. The need for public assistance among fast-food workers is the rule rather than exception even if you work more than 40 hours, he said.. Low wage jobs are expensive for all of us, said Jack Temple, an analyst with the National Law Employment Law Project, which released a similar report Tuesday called Super-Sizing Public Costs.. Opponents attacked the findings as a backdoor attempt to unionize workers.. Its no surprise that two organizations the SEIU funds generously would carry the unions water in these specious new reports, Michael Saltsman, an analyst with the Employment Policies Institute, wrote in a statement released Tuesday.. Dramatic wage hikes would hurt fast-food workers, according to the statement from EPI, a Washington, D.C.-based organization founded and run by Rick Berman, a well-known lobbyist for the restaurant, hotel, alcoholic beverage and tobacco industries.. Burger King responded in an email that ...
The mouth and oropharynx are among the ten most common sites affected by cancer worldwide, but global incidence varies widely. Five-year survival rates exceed 50% in only the best treatment centers. Causes are predominantly lifestyle-related: Tobacco, areca nut, alcohol, poor diet, viral infections, and pollution are all important etiological factors. Oral cancer is a disease of the poor and dispossessed, and reducing social inequalities requires national policies co-ordinated with wider health and social initiatives - the common risk factor approach: control of the environment; safe water; adequate food; public and professional education about early signs and symptoms; early diagnosis and intervention; evidence-based treatments appropriate to available resources; and thoughtful rehabilitation and palliative care. Reductions in inequalities, both within and between countries, are more likely to accrue from the application of existing knowledge in a whole-of-society approach. Basic research aimed ...

At one time or another, anyone may pick up a bad habit. But there are some situations where a youngsters parafunctional (detrimental to health) habits can actually influence the development and function of his or her teeth, jaws and mouth. Some examples of these are persistent thumb sucking, tongue thrusting and mouth breathing.. The sucking reflex is natural in early childhood; it usually disappears between ages 2 and 4. But if it persists much later, the pressure of the digit on the front teeth and the upper jaw can actually cause the teeth to move apart and the jaws to change shape. This can lead to the orthodontic problem called open bite, and may impair speech. An open bite can also be caused by the force of the tongue pushing forward against the teeth (tongue thrusting).. Mouth breathing - an abnormal breathing pattern in which the mouth always remains open, passing air directly to the lungs - is related to alterations in the muscular function of the tongue and face. It may cause the ...

Alexander and her classmates kept each other motivated through the rigorous five-month training program.. It was stressful, she said. If someone wasnt there, we were always concerned about where they are and if theyre okay because we knew we were limited in the number of days we could miss.. This camaraderie seems to be a serendipitous by-product of the COIP program.. We all looked out for each other, like making sure we were there on time, making sure we were there period, Bass said. I was reminded of all the training we went through by looking at the new graduates here who are going through what we went through this time last year.. Graduating from COIP does not necessarily guarantee employment. It places 85 percent of graduates into jobs at UCSF. As of 2005, 62 percent of COIP graduates advanced to administrative assistant II roles from clerk positions; and 26 percent advanced to administrative assistant III positions at UCSF.. In the beginning I thought I could get a job ...
