Considerable familiarity with the symptoms of whiplash injury and a knowledge of the risk factors contributing to delayed recovery are requirements for the professionals who write expert reports. In addition, good skills in evaluating the factors influencing pain and illness behavior are necessary, as is the assessment of cognitive performance. Knowing these factors allows an integrative assessment of whiplash patients and is preferebly performed by psychiatrists or physicians trained in psychosomatic medicine.

Patients with medically unexplained physical symptoms (MUPS) are common in primary care, with a spectrum from mild to moderate and chronic MUPS. The burden of chronic MUPS is high, and early identification of moderate MUPS patients is important to prevent chronicity. The PRESUME screening method to identify moderate MUPS patients in primary care was developed, but insight in prognostic accuracy is needed. Therefore, our objective is to determine the prognostic accuracy for identification of moderate MUPS patients using the screening method with 5 year follow-up. The PRESUME screening method consists of three subsequent steps based on consultation frequency, exclusion of medical/psychiatric diagnosis and identification of MUPS. In a random 10% sample of patients from the Julius General Practitioners Network (n = 114.185), patients were identified with mild, moderate or chronic MUPS in 2008 (index year), using routine care data. In 5 years follow-up we calculated predictive values and odds ratios for
A systematic review finds that compared with enhanced care CBT is not more effective for medically unexplained physical symptoms.

There was a significant but comparatively weaker correlation between length of stay and timing of referral in older patients compared with the younger group, which was a disappointing finding as this is a large and important target group for CLP services. This result is in contrast to the study of the rapid assessment, interface and discharge integrated model (RAID), which found that most of the services cost savings were achieved through reduced lengths of stay and fewer readmissions in the geriatric wards.2 The authors suggested these outcomes were related to educating general hospital staff about mental health problems and efforts to link patients to appropriate pathways for community care.2 The difference in strength of correlation of the association found in the study presented here may be because of the inherent differences between the two age groups, including the need for an interpreter. The study hospital serves an ethnically diverse population with 48.1% of the hospitals catchment ...

Sharmalab at Channing division of Network medicine focuses on broad area of systems medicine and high throughput experimental data ranging from genomics to health care records. We explore the relationship between different type of interaction networks and human disease and aim to gain a deeper knowledge of the molecular bases of pathological processes. The complexity of biological systems motivates us to use network and computational based to provide deep understanding of disease etiology. A deeper knowledge of the cell networks and molecular bases that drive pathological processes will inspire novel therapeutic strategies, ultimately leading to the development of more effective and safer drugs to fight complex diseases. We focus on providing the prominent predictive models to integrate omics data aided by the systems and network biology. A team of scientists led by Dr. Michel Desjardins from the University of Montreal and Dr. Heidi McBride from the Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital (MNI) at McGill University have discovered that two genes associated with Parkinsons disease (PD) are key regulators of the immune system, providing direct evidence linking Parkinsons to autoimmune disease.. Using both cellular and mouse models, the team has shown that proteins produced by the two genes, known as PINK1 and Parkin, are required to prevent cells from being detected and attacked by the immune system. ...

Yuri: Aubrey, thank you very much for agreeing to this interview. Why dont we dive right in? I am sure everybody asks you this: how and when did you become interested in aging, and when did you decide to make it your lifes mission to defeat it?. Aubrey de Grey: I became interested in aging and decided to work on it in my late 20s, so, in the early 1990s. The reason I became interested was because that was when I discovered that other biologists were almost all not interested in it. They did not think that aging was a particularly important or interesting question. I had always assumed, throughout my whole life, that aging was obviously the worlds most important problem. I thought that people who understood biology would be working on it really hard. Then, I discovered that wasnt true and that hardly any biologists were working on it. The ones that were werent doing it very well, not very productively as far as I could see. I thought Id better have a go myself, so I switched fields from my ...

Holmqvist, G. & Lundqvist Persson, C. (2011). Is there evidence for the use of art therapy in treatment of psychosomatic disorders, eating disorders and crisis? A comparative study of two different systems for evaluation. Scandinavian Journal of Psychology. As with any type of treatment the requirement for evidence based practice (EBP) has also affected art therapy (AT) when used as an intervention. This review evaluates the available evidence for using AT for psychosomatic disorders, eating disorders and crisis. The search in Cochrane, Best Practice, AMED, CINAHL, PION, PsycINFO and PubMed from 1987 until now resulted in a huge number of articles but only 32 articles met our criteria for evaluations. The articles were assessed with two evaluation systems, the GRADE system used by the Swedish Council on Health Technology Assessment (SBU) and the US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF/Task Force). When comparing the results we found that the GRADE evaluation system rejected the quality in 84% ...
Medically unexplained physical symptoms (MUPS or MUS) are symptoms for which a treating physician or other healthcare providers have found no medical cause, or whose cause remains contested.[1] In its strictest sense, the term simply means that the cause for the symptoms is unknown or disputed-there is no scientific consensus. Not all medically unexplained symptoms are influenced by identifiable psychological factors.[2] However, in practice, most physicians and authors who use the term consider that the symptoms most likely arise from psychological causes. Typically, the possibility that MUPS are caused by prescription drugs or other drugs is ignored.[3] It is estimated that between 15% and 30% of all primary care consultations are for medically unexplained symptoms.[4] A large Canadian community survey revealed that the most common medically unexplained symptoms are musculoskeletal pain, ear, nose, and throat symptoms, abdominal pain and gastrointestinal symptoms, fatigue, and dizziness.[4] ...

The program is internationally respected as one of the first of its kind, serving as a model for other medical universities working to set up longitudinal curricula. One of the most significant innovations was the Caring for our patients with Cancer Program in which students follow a patient with newly diagnosed cancer across all disciplines and sites for the entire year. This gives them an un-paralleled view of the disease from the patients perspective, an understanding of the patient experience of complex chronic illness, a unique understanding of the way health systems work. Mondino in Pavia to study the mother and baby relationship. At the end of the follow-up period, from the birth to the end of the second year of age, all children had psychosomatic disorders (repeated rejections, anorexia, sleep disturbances characterised by difficulty in falling asleep and frequent wake-ups, gaseous colics many times during the day). The psychosomatic disorders are considered as the result of an early distortion of the mother and baby relationship. Thus children born from HIV positive mothers are exposed to the possibility of developing psychological problems related to a distorted relationship with their ...
Psychiatrists bring a unique understanding to clinical ethics, but psychiatrists need a precise awareness of the difference between exercising their clinical expertise and facilitating ethical decisionmaking. The author outlines a schema for recognizing and honoring that distinction and illustrates pseudoethics, pseudopsychiatry, and psychiatry/ethics consultations. The author describes how to make a situational diagnosis that includes patient/family issues, staff issues, joint issues, legal/regulatory issues, and ethical issues, thus enabling the psychiatrist to institute an appropriate hierarchy of interventions: educational, psychological, and ethical. The literature on ethics education for psychiatric practitioners is reviewed and a program is suggested. ...

Engraved into the top of the metal case of the Iomega eGo Helium is the company name - and thats the only decoration on this minimalist product. One end is entirely plain, while the other has a mini-USB 2.0 port and a white LED that lights when connected.. As with all USB 2.0 drives, the Iomega eGo Helium is rather slow when it comes to actually getting data into or out of it. In our lab tests we saw a peak sequential transfer speeds of 37MBps for reading files, and 28MBps for writing.. In the unlikely event that you could sustain that peak transfer rate, it would take 5 hours to fill this drive with your data. Construction is simple and sturdy looking, although the ends and especially corners are a little sharp and will scratch any plastic or delicate objects if you carry it loose in your bag. There is no carrying case included in the Iomega eGo Heliums packing box. Nor are there any form of feet to reduce damage to or from surfaces you lay it on..
