With the advent of methods from behavioral genetics, molecular biology, and cognitive neuroscience, affective science has recently started to approach genetic influences on emotion, and the underlying intermediate neural mechanisms through which genes and experience shape emotion. The aim of this volume is to offer a comprehensive account of current research in the genetics of emotion, written by leading researchers, with extensive sections focused on methods, intermediate phenotypes, and clinical and translational work. Major methodological approaches are reviewed in the first section, including the two traditional workhorses in the field, twin studies and gene-environment interaction studies, and the more recently developed epigenetic modification assays, genome-wide association studies, and ...
Differences in beliefs may also exist about the challenges of doing no harm. First, do no harm is a constant reminder to physicians. In 2006 the American Psychiatric Association voted overwhelmingly to discourage its members from participating in devising strategies to get information from detainees. When the Pentagon announced it would try to use only psychologists in this role, Stephen Behnke, director of ethics for the American Psychological Association, said psychologists knew not to participate in activities that harmed detainees.[14] The president of the American Psychological Association in 2007 wrote: The associations position is rooted in our belief that having psychologists consult with interrogation teams makes an important contribution toward keeping interrogations safe and ethical.[15]. It seems worth examining these assurances in light of increasingly detailed reports about detainee interrogations. Eban reported, Psychologists werent merely complicit in Americas ...

Dr. Wei has been a distinguished exemplar of a Scientist-Practitioner. Her practice spans 8 years of counseling Taiwanese students in Taiwan and 3 years of specialty service to Asian Americans in USA. She has served as a member in the Editorial Board of Journal of Counseling Psychology, The Counseling Psychologist, and Chinese Journal of Guidance and Counseling (an Asian ...

How many of our brothers and sisters truly feel a sense of that purpose any longer? How many of us wake up early, fresh, ready to tackle the world before us and as they move about their day, they do so with 110% making them completely exhausted to the point, the moment their bodies hit the bed, they pass out? Compare that to the many that stay awake all day, behind a computer, making comments on social media, living off measly benefits making every excuse in the book NOT to get up and find a job.. Sure, I believe the numbers are very tilted to one side-meaning, yes, I believe more veterans are actually out there hitting the racks with complete exhaustion, kicking ass and taking names every single day versus those who decided to become social media warriors with zero passion in their lives. BUT, which of the two identified groups do you believe the public sees most?. This is not about those go getters out there. No, this is about those who lack a purpose in life-a purpose full of passion they ...

Psychological processes in sport are inextricably linked to the social contexts within which they occur. However, research and practice in applied sport psychology have shown only marginal concern for the social dimensions of participation. As a consequence of stronger ties to clinical and counseling psychology than to social psychology, the prevailing model of intervention in applied sport psychology has been individually centered. Focus at the individual level has been further bolstered by cognitive emphases in modem psychology. The purpose of this paper is to highlight the need for a balanced consideration of social and personal influences. Four social psychological dimensions of interest will be explored, including athletic subculture membership; athletic identity concerns; social networks of influence; and leadership processes. The relevance of these forms of influence will be examined in relation to applied concerns in the areas of athlete academic performance, overtraining and burnout, ...
Tantra is the oldest and most evolved intuitional science extant today, drawing those practicing it into subtler realms of being, launching new thresholds of excellence, and flourishing all they come into contact. Intuitional science is a birthright for ethical people, perhaps that means you too. Here tantra is explored as evolving from specific psychological dimensions, often not yet fathomed in Western psychology. Explore further this sublime practice, be all that you ethically can be.. ...
The sheer amount of qualifying statements in those sentences is outstanding. But let us ignore such brazen tautology and meandering qualifying rhetoric for a moment, as there is something far more important and interesting going on here.. Why does Samuelson insist that this is not a psychological function? After all, we have just shown that the theory of utility contains a strongly psychological dimension in which it gives a very definitive view of human psychology.. This is a classic shunning of intellectual responsibility on the part of Samuelson. He assures us - and with us, himself - that he is not passing psychological judgement. He does this by insisting that we are engaged here in science (whatever that means).. Of course, the critical observer can see that this is a strongly psychological argument with absolutely psychological foundations, but Samuelson doesnt want to know anything about this.. Why? Because that would lead him to be questioned regarding the psychological basis of ...

CiteSeerX - Document Details (Isaac Councill, Lee Giles, Pradeep Teregowda): There is much positive research on computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL) environments in asynchronous distributed learning groups (DLGs). There is also research that shows that contemporary CSCL environments do not completely fulfil expectations on supporting interactive group learning, shared understanding, social construction of knowledge, and acquisition of competencies. There appear to be two major pitfalls impeding achievement of the desired social interaction in CSCL environments: taking social interaction in groups for granted and the lack of attention paid to the social psychological dimension of social interaction outside of the task context. Current solutions offered to avoid the pitfalls placed responsibility on instructors and teachers to encourage collaborative learning and social interaction. To both free educators from this burden and be more cost effective, we propose an intelligent CSCL environment.

Spare a thought for poor old Palm. Nokia has succeeded in convincing analysts, and portions of the press, that its $399 Linux Wi-Fi tablet, the Nokia 770, is an entirely new device category. Even the Wall Street Journal said so.. But for a hundred dollars less, Palm will also sell you a Wi-Fi tablet, only one with a vast range of third-party applications, a built-in personal organizer and an MP3 player. The Palm OS has been powering Wi-Fi tablets for three years, of course, only the world calls them PDAs.. But the limitations of browsing on a Palm device have been all too obvious. The built-in Blazer browser is good for about two task switches before crashing the device - and thats if you can get it to start at all without hanging the PDA. The browser appears to be only vaguely aware of what to do with a local cache, and it only allows one page to be viewed at a time.. So Palm fans have long petitioned the champ of mobile browsers, Opera, to bring its sophisticated, multi-window browser to ...

This book, a member of the Series in Affective Science, is a unique interdisciplinary sequence of articles on the cognitive neuroscience of emotion by some of the most well-known researchers in the area. It explores what is known about cognitive processes in emotion at the same time it reviews the processes and anatomical structures involved in emotion, determining whether there is something about emotion and its neural substrates that requires they be studied as a separate domain.
Can you detect someones emotional state just by looking at his face?. It sure seems like it. In everyday life, you can often read what someone is feeling with the quickest of glances. Hundreds of scientific studies support the idea that the face is a kind of emotional beacon, clearly and universally signaling the full array of human sentiments, from fear and anger to joy and surprise.. Increasingly, companies like Apple and government agencies like the Transportation Security Administration are banking on this transparency, developing software to identify consumers moods or training programs to gauge the intent of airline passengers. The same assumption is at work in the field of mental health, where illnesses like autism and schizophrenia are often treated in part by training patients to distinguish emotions by facial expression.. But this assumption is wrong. Several recent and forthcoming research papers from the Interdisciplinary Affective Science Laboratory, which I direct, suggest that ...

Anger is generally considered to be an negative emotion.. It is often intense, powerful, and unpleasant for everyone around it. The emotion may have several negative health effects, and may be especially bad for your heart. Anger management resources are widespread. Because of the problematic nature of anger, that it is such a forceful negative emotion and makes people uncomfortable, as one Psychology Today article puts it, taboos about expressing it are widespread.. To further complicate matters, many psychologists believe that holding anger in is bad for you, that it only builds pressure to be expressed. On the other hand, the American Psychological Association (APA) now says that freely expressing anger may be a dangerous myth used as a license to hurt others. Furthermore, research has found that letting it rip with anger actually escalates anger and aggression and does nothing to help you (or the person youre angry with) resolve the situation.. Feeding into the taboo nature ...
Daniel Olim This paper will focus on psychological interpretations of UFO phenomena not because of any prejudice on my part but because I believe psychology can serve as a very useful tool in attempting an explanation of UFOs. All of the existing theories expounded by the Air Force and various physical scientists which have sought to explain UFO sightings have operated on the assumption that the empirical approach of the physical sciences, being less subjective, was therefore the superior approach. I cannot concur with that assumption, for a number of reasons. Firstly, I believe that as Michael Polanyi (Oxford philosopher) pointed out in a recent article in the magazine of the American Psychological Association, that, all science is both intuitive methodologically and essentially subjective. Secondly, the physical.science explanations of natural phenomena (meteors, cloud formations, planets, stars, ball-lightning-plasma, birds, temperature-inversions, marsh gases) or artificial ...

A new study is the first to examine the effectiveness of a widely used counseling approach to treating substance abuse among African Americans. The study found that African American women were more likely than men to continue a counseling approach to treating substance abuse, but their substance abuse issues continued. Published this month in Cultural Diversity and Ethnic Minority Psychology, a journal of the American Psychological Association, the study investigated the effectiveness of Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET) compared with the standard treatment, Counseling as Usual (CAU)-two clinical approaches to treating substance abuse among African Americans. As a secondary analysis of a clinical trial by the Clinical Trials Network of the National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA), the study serves as a rare examination of both treatment retention rates and the effectiveness of MET in reducing drug abuse, specifically among African Americans.. Motivation Enhancement Therapy is designed to ...

WASHINGTON -- When leaders use a moral argument rather than a pragmatic one as the basis for a position, they may be judged harshly if they change that position later. They are perceived as hypocrites, less effective and less worthy of future support, according to research published by the American Psychological Association.. Leaders may choose to take moral stances, believing that this will improve audiences perceptions. And it does, initially. But all people, even leaders, have to change their minds sometimes, said lead author Tamar Kreps, PhD, of the University of Utah. Our research shows that leaders who change their moral minds are seen as more hypocritical, and not as courageous or flexible, compared with those whose initial view was based on a pragmatic argument. Due to this perception of hypocrisy, they are also seen as less effective and less worthy of support.. The research was published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.. In the study, Kreps and her colleagues ...

The Psychology Training Program, which is fully accredited by the American Psychological Association for internship training, has the goal of assisting interns in the development of the knowledge, skills and techniques necessary to function as professional psychologists. Ours is a practitioner / scientist program in that the emphasis is placed upon the various supervised activities an intern might perform. That is, patient care activities, such as assessment and intervention, are typically given a higher priority than more academic pursuits, such as research and teaching. This is not because we devalue the latter; rather, it is because we perceive our site better suited to providing training in patient care functions than university training programs, which seem better suited to providing training in ...

One of the earliest psychology societies was La Société de Psychologie Physiologique in France, which lasted 1885-1893. The first meeting of the International Congress of Psychology took place in Paris, in August 1889, amidst the Worlds Fair celebrating the centennial of the French Revolution. William James was one of three Americans among the four hundred attendees. The American Psychological Association was founded soon after, in 1892. The International Congress continued to be held, at different locations in Europe, with wider international participation. The Sixth Congress, Geneva 1909, included presentations in Russian, Chinese, and Japanese, as well as Esperanto. After a hiatus for War War I, the Seventh Congress met in Oxford, with substantially greater participation from the war-victorious Anglo-Americans. In 1929, the Congress took place at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, attended by hundreds of members of the American Psychological Association[25] Tokyo Imperial ...

Going, going …gone. Even though baseball is a game of singles, every player secretly wants to blast a home run into the center field seats every time they step up to the plate. Hitting for power has always been baseballs premier play. Even more exciting than base stealing, double plays and the suicide squeeze.. Everybody knows it takes strength, power and eye-hand coordination skills to excel in baseball and softball.. Second only to golf, accurate eye-hand coordination makes or breaks the skill level of baseball players. Whether its hitting, fielding or base running, the ability to coordinate eye-hand movement and eye-foot movement with power separates the good from the best at every level of the sport.. The problem is you also need to have good balance combined with a minimum core strength and power baseline for balance stability. Like anything else thats built solid. You have to build it from the ground up. It has to start off balanced and each additional layer has to be strong enough to ...
There are, of course, limitations to science-fiction movies. People used to love to be frightened by ghost stories -- those evil portents of a world beyond death, with their intimations of haunted, macabre sex. Those stories belonged to an age when people lived in fear of their own impulses, and in dread of punishment. And movies were able to bring out the stories primitive-sophisticated power -- their suggestiveness. Science fiction, the modern successor to tales of the supernatural, lacks those psychological dimensions, it doesnt have the whole nighttime apparatus of guilt and superstition clinging to it. The attraction of science fiction is that its an escape into an almost abstract unknown. Those who are frightened of, despairing about, or bored with this world like to turn their hopes to other worlds in space, but theyre not much interested in people. Imagination and idealism are expressed in simplified, allegorical terms. Generally speaking, when a speculative fantasy deals with human ...
SYDNEY, Australia - As public conversation about mental health has grown louder and busier in recent years, mental illness has become more than a category of disease with social and psychological dimensions. Especially in the case of depression and anxiety, mental illness has come to be seen as a proxy for what is wrong with the modern Western world.. Depression is like a Rorschach test: People see in it whatever they like, in order to make whatever point they like, about what they perceive to be the ills of society. Blame for depression is found in capitalism, loss of religion, social media, processed food. Recently a book was released promising to tackle anxiety for good with a two-week sugar detox.. Much good has come of the increased willingness to discuss mental disorders. There is greater acceptance than in the past that mental illness is real and common, and that when it arises, its causes are complex and cannot be explained away as weakness or lack of character. All of this is vital in ...

This means learning not just the content of psychology but how and why psychology is organized into concepts, principles, laws, and theories The most frequently cited definition of critical thinking points to the importance of belief, yet there is a dearth of research and theory in the reading arena concerning the construct of belief. This is the absolute basics of critical thinking. All who profess to know a field, and those who want to keep abreast of advances, are necessarily consumers of research. Pauline Magee-Egan. Psychologys War on Religion, edited by Nicholas Cummings, et al. (Phoenix, Arizona: Zeig, Tucker & Theisen, 2009) Order online at www.zeigtucker.com or call 1-800-666-2211. The editors of this important volume have assembled the writings of various experts to comment on several religions and the impact of psychologys stand on religious beliefs. The collection maintains that psychology has systematically attacked all religions, without exception.. In the introductory chapter, the editors offer an accurate account of the movement within the profession, as exhibited by the American Psychological Association (APA), and the way religious values and beliefs have been attacked. The statements made by the APA have been influential in the resignation of psychologists who practice their religion. The APA does not speak for all psychologists, and in recent years it has introduced outrageous positions when it comes to abortion and homosexuality. A supposedly professional organization ...
First, do no harm. This tenet of medicine applies equally to psychologists, yet they are increasingly implicated in abusive interrogations, dare we say torture, at U.S. military detention facilities like Guantanamo. While the American Medical Association and the American Psychiatric Association both have passed resolutions prohibiting members from participating in interrogations, the American Psychological Association refuses to, despite the outrage of many of its members.

The largest association of psychologists in the United States is on the brink of a crisis, the Guardian has learned, after an independent review revealed that medical professionals lied and covered up their extensive involvement in post-9/11 torture. The revelation, puncturing years of denials, has already led to at least one leadership firing and creates the potential for loss of licenses and even prosecutions.. For more than a decade, the American Psychological Association (APA) has maintained that a strict code of ethics prohibits its more than 130,000 members to aid in the torture of detainees while simultaneously permitting involvement in military and intelligence interrogations. The group has rejected media reporting on psychologists complicity in torture; suppressed internal dissent from anti-torture doctors; cleared members of wrongdoing; and portrayed itself as a consistent ally against abuse.. Now, a voluminous independent review conducted by a former assistant US attorney, David ...
WASHINGTON-Fatigue can lead to dangerous errors by doctors, pilots and others in high-risk professions, but individuals who work together as a team display better problem-solving skills than those who face their fatigue alone, new research shows. Teams appear to be more highly motivated to perform well, and team members can compare solutions to reach the best decision when they are fatigued. This appears to allow teams to avoid the inflexible thinking experienced by fatigued individuals, said Daniel Frings, PhD, a senior lecturer in social psychology at London South Bank University. His study was published online this week in the American Psychological Associations Journal of Experimental Psychology: Applied®. The work was supported by a grant from the Economic and Social Research Council, a government-funded organization serving the United Kingdom. The study examined the problem-solving skills of 171 army officer cadets during a weekend training exercise. Individual cadets and teams of four ...

2 Linguistics 2. STUDY. Branches of Linguistics. Various definitions have been given by different scholars on what language is. the study of the production, perception and the physical nature of sounds of speech and how these can be recorded with written symbols. Linguistics spans a large number of subfields, each dealing with a different part of the language faculty. Theoretical linguistics is the branch of linguistics that is most concerned with developing models of linguistic knowledge. Cech (1999), the performance of family dogs (Cants familiaris) was examined in a 2-way food choice task in which 4 types of directional cues were given by the experimenter: pointing and gazing, head-nodding (at target), head turning above the correct container (above target), and glancing only (eyes only). The results showed that the performance of the dogs resembled more closely that of the children in D. J. Povinelli et al.s study, in contrast to the chimpanzees performance in the same study. One problem: all the attention on scientific rigor, and all the focus on pathology did not make Martin Seligman, or anyone else, any more fundamentally Happy. From the time that the German pioneers (Wundt, Freud, et al) began their study of psychology in the early 20th century to the dawning of the new millennium when Seligman reigned over the American Psychological Association, our rates of Happiness had not improved. In other words, Seligman, and the rest of us had to concede that we were WRONG. The experiment hadnt proven what we set out to prove. In fact, we seemed to have disproven our thesis in many ways. It was humbling. And if we had been belief-based in our approach, we would have stayed the course, insisting that we were RIGHT, even though the science, the numbers, the facts and findings did not support that conclusion. Instead, good old stodgy Seligman is a man of Reason. And he said, its time for a new course. Thus he began studying Happiness, not Pathology. What was born of that ...
