In the past few years we have focused on field building initiatives centered around building the capacity of evaluators to incorporate culturally responsive evaluation (CRE) and social justice into their practice. We see this goal as paramount to create a thriving field ready to respond to the evaluation needs of a multicultural world. This past year, during our flagship event, the Social Justice & Evaluation conference, is where we promoted this work. We provided CRE 101 sessions in addition to sessions helping evaluators address isms during the evaluation process from start to finish, how to assess what the current political climate can impact evaluation and the people we serve, or how social justice can be infused into practices such as results-based accountability.. Lessons Learned:. We recently administered a survey to Wisconsin evaluators and asked them about how much they use CRE. The full results will be shared in the future, but we can share a couple points for discussion. For ...

When I was in medical school in the late 1950s, a visiting professor (a psychiatrist from Yale, I think, whose name I have forgotten) gave a talk advocating a restructuring of training that would lead to a degree of Doctor of Medical Psychology. I think that it was an idea much like yours, even then, before the current split between talk therapy and pharmacological therapy. I infer that you are advocating training that plays up the essentials and does away with the nonessentials, and I agree wholeheartedly. I have ordered your book and am eagerly awaiting it. It seems to me that some authority will have to be persuaded to license people trained in that manner. In another of your blogs, I suggested that a possibly promising route would be the military (i.e. the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences). What do you think? ...

Social jet lag, a term coined by researchers in Europe, refers to the discrepancy between your natural body clock and your social clock - the schedule you need to keep for your job and other social commitments. If youre relying an alarm clock to wake up every morning during the week, but sleeping in on weekends, thats a good sign theres a mismatch. The end result is that your bodys basically shuttling back and forth between time zones each week while youre becoming increasingly sleep-deprived.. While during the workweek [people] get too little sleep and are woken by the alarm clock in the middle of their biological night, they sleep in on the weekends in order to fill up their tanks with the sleep they need, researcher Dr. Till Roenneberg of the University of Munichs Institute of Medical Psychology, in Germany, said in a video about the study.. Theory of Mind (ToM) is defined as one’s ability to understand others’ wishes, beliefs, intentions, and other psychological states and thereby to judge others’ behavior, as an essential component of social cognition. However, there have been limited studies on social cognition,

A very well documented study of the lying factor, Lack of Evidence for Transmission of HIV Through Vaginal Intercourse, was published in the Archives of Sexual Behavior, Vol 24, No. 4, November 1995. The study by Stuart Brody, Ph.d., a specialist in medical PSYCHOLOGY traces the invalid reports of heterosexual contact in detail including data on broader sexual lies told and the various psychological tests to measure the lie factor in other activities. The strong conclusion is lying by respondents (including socially desirable response bias), is one of a number of factors resulting in HIV-positive reports that fail to show the true risk factor of anal intercourse or iv drug activity. Mr. Brody says: Scientifically proving that something does not exist or occur is always very difficult and usually impossible. The primary point this paper attempts to convey is that there has been the assumption in both scientific and lay communities that vaginal HIV transmission does commonly exist, and that the ...

Using performance review templates initiate dialog by creating clear expectations for performance. When you provide a performance management system that focuses on coaching, by making imbedded tools available to spark ongoing dialogue, employees are less likely to be surprised about their need for improvement. And like every team, whether its football or your customer service department, coaching is necessary for everyone, including those team members who continue to win week after week. Coaching templates provide an excellent tool to reinforce the performance of your high potentials ...
There is no medical progress without clinical research. Laws and directives ensure that people who participate in clinical studies are adequately protected. Too much protection makes medical progress impossible, and too little protection puts the health of study participants at risk. In order to find the right balance between protection and progress, an ongoing dialogue is needed between authorities, the public, and researchers from both academia and industry. And to find globally viable solutions, exchanging information and ideas with other countries is necessary.. The SCTO offers platforms for this dialogue on its own initiative and upon request. For example, SCTO representatives are regularly involved in discussions with swissethics, the Swiss Ethics Committees on research involving humans.. In addition, experts from the SCTO network actively participate in working groups to implement the Human Research Act in a practice-oriented way. Open discussions between researchers and authorities help ...

by Brennan Lagasse. On October 12, 2011, indigenous elders and medicine people came together on a conference call with several representatives of the federal government. The purpose of the call was to continue an ongoing dialogue centered on the protection of indigenous sacred sites that continue to be comprised under federal leadership. It was a very relevant exercise in where the modern day power culture of the federal government still stands in regards to respect for the well-being of indigenous peoples.. Although several governmental representatives took part in the call, the clear and salient message received by those not affiliated with the federal government was, firstly, that sacred site protection is not important enough for Secretary Tom Vilsack to be a part of the call-the one whom all indigenous elders and medicine people were planning on being involved. And secondly, that it is not important enough to honor the request of those who hold these places as central to their well-being ...

Getting enough sleep is vital to supporting our immune system in fighting off pathogens - so much is common knowledge. But what we dont know is how exactly sleep affects certain immune functions. Scientists at the University of Tübingen and the University of Lübeck have now discovered a new mechanism by which sleep supports the immune system. The team led by Dr. Luciana Besedovsky and Dr. Stoyan Dimitrov from the Institute of Medical Psychology and Behavioral Neurobiology in Tübingen and Dr. Tanja Lange from the Clinic for Rheumatology and Clinical Immunology in Lübeck were able to show that the function of T cells, the white blood cells that are responsible for combating pathogens, was impaired after only three hours without sleep. The study was published in the Journal of Experimental Medicine.. The scientists conducted a 24-hour experiment with volunteers: One group was allowed to sleep for eight hours at night, a second group stayed awake for the whole period. During the experiment, ...
The overarching purpose of the current article was to examine the status of sport psychology as a profession in 4 ways. First, the author characterizes the profession of sport psychology as an illusion because there is so little demand for sport psychology services and because there are so few full-time practicing sport psychologists. Second, paradoxically, it appears that many people assume that applied sport psychology is a healthy and viable profession, so the author comments on why this is the case. Sidestepping the lack of jobs does a disservice to graduate students who believe they can easily become practicing sport psychologists. Third, it is clear that few athletes or teams want to pay for sport psychology services, so some reasons why this is the case are presented. Fourth, the author speculates about the future of the sport psychology profession, followed by some recommendations that would rectify his claim that the fields relative silence on this issue does a disservice to students. ...

We believe that labels, including mental health diagnoses, broad behavioural descriptors (e.g. pejorative descriptions of types of drug use or emotional regulation patterns) and identity labels can be experienced as stigmatising and serve to reinforce unhelpful societal power differences and so should be avoided. We aspire to use language that is empowering, inclusive and valuing the whole person ...

The editors would like to offer their thanks to the authors of the chapters in this book for their thoughtful contributions. Inheritors of a long tradition of silent service, they have been willing to add their voices to an ongoing dialogue between providers of and observers of medical care in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, for which we are grateful.. The children and the families for whom we have had the privilege of caring during their various illnesses are honored as well in these pages, though the details of the cases have been changed by the authors to prevent any identification of particular patients.. Although it is the physicians voice that is most often heard in this volume, we gratefully acknowledge that the work of the hospital involves many helping professions, including nurses, therapists, chaplains, social workers, and clinical ethicists.. The areas of pediatric medicine and of medical ethics have been impoverished by the loss of William A. Silverman, who ...
