Since arriving at Madonna University in 1994, I have been committed to teaching students the theories and practices of clinical psychology so they can provide compassionate and effective care to those suffering with psychological difficulties. In 2001, I took the lead in creating the Masters of Science in Clinical Psychology Program, and a year later, helped establish the Madonna University Psychological Services training clinic. My clinical training has been in contemporary psychoanalytic training. Following my post-doctoral training, I began psychoanalytic training at the Michigan Psychoanalytic Institute. Since then, I have recognized the importance of a psychoanalytic/psychodynamic background for effectively making use of other theoretical approaches, such as ACT, CBT, DBT, family systems and emotion focused therapies. While in college, I was exposed to neuropsychology through a personal experience, which helped to mark my career path. A family member suffered a blunt head trauma during a terrible car accident. After two weeks in a coma, he emerged to consciousness with a multitude of physical, cognitive, and interpersonal deficits. This experience presented an opportunity for me to become involved with his rehabilitation process and to become familiar with the treatment tools that facilitated his recovery.. The interaction of explicit motives and implicit motives is also clinically relevant. When they are in harmony, the outcome is usually positive; when they conflict, negative outcomes ensue.
