Four main causes of bruxism have been studied - high anxiety level, malocclusion, temporomandibular disorders (TMD) and oral habits. Effective dental treatment for this problem is unknown in children with primary teeth, although, high prevalence has been reported. The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of psychological techniques in children with bruxism. A total of 33 children, 3-6 years of age with normal occlusal features, without oral habits, rate in the Conners parent rating scales (CPRS) and more than 0.75% in Conners teacher rating scales (CTRS), and one or more temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders registered in the Bernal and Tsamtsouris examination, were selected from 188 children. Two psychological techniques, directed muscular relaxation and competence reaction, were applied for 6 months. The results were analysed with a Wilcoxon rank sum test. All patients reduced their anxiety level and TMJ disorders, with statistical significance (P , 0.05). The ...
Interventions that comprise interdisciplinary collaboration including behavioral elements are effective in addressing lifestyle disease risk factors. However, it is not known how best to conduct this collaboration for sustainable change. The aim of this study was to systematically examine the evidence for the effects of interdisciplinary interventions on lifestyle disease risk factors including weight, lipid levels, glycemic control, and blood pressure. To do so, a systematic review of the literature was conducted using the databases Scopus, Medline, and Web of Science (all years to September 2014). Eighteen articles describing 16 studies of interdisciplinary interventions were identified. Consistent results were found for effects on weight loss but not for effects on blood lipids, blood glucose, and blood pressure. Effective interventions involved collaborations between dieticians, exercise physiologists, and psychologists and incorporated intensive initial participant engagement. Few studies

The proposed conversational agent will provide interactive psychoeducation, assessment tools, and personalized illness management strategies to patients with PTSD. It will support turn-taking and interactivity, which will result in active information flow in both ways rather than just passive delivery of information content. The implementation of the CA will involve dialogue management, handling user input for branching, and delivering appropriate message for a given context. For sustaining longitudinal user engagement, it will leverage the Supportive Accountability model with a specific focus on maintaining social presence and process accountability through personalization, goal setting, and contextualized support. The CA will be developed as a stand-alone module that can be incorporated into a mobile app. This will streamline the deployment of the system to patients. The project will collect real-world data to determine domain specific usability issues and information needs. It will also ...

Patients who use drugs or alcohol who do not adequately adhere to antiretroviral medication have sub-optimal outcomes, but effective interventions for them are lacking. In this R34 application, we seek to develop and pilot an intervention program delivered by phone and supported by information technology that combines contingency management for medication adherence and a cognitive-behavioral approach to both adherence to antiretroviral therapy and abstinence from substances of abuse. The intervention, CARE (Centralized Off-site AdheRence Enhancement Program), builds on the published finding that adherence was robustly improved and viral load was significantly reduced among patients who received cash-reinforcement for opening MEMS-capped bottles to take prescribed medication on time. CARE involves transmission of bottle-opening data with real time operation from SimPill bottles to a website system which generates messages to patients indicating the amount of cash-reinforcement earned if ...

A similar study known as the QUALMAN Trial (Quality of Life in Managing Chronic Pain) was recently completed by TCOMs Dr. John Licciardone and published in Healthcare. The study demonstrated encouraging results with an eHealth intervention for patient pain self-management that was simple to understand and had essentially no costs or side effects.. The registry is conducting innovative research using a digital research platform to reach patients throughout the nation, said Dr. Licciardone. Our randomized registry trials use a new research paradigm that has been described as potentially the next disruptive technology in clinical research by the New England Journal of Medicine.. More than 1,600 patients are currently enrolled in the registrys research, which includes collecting biological samples for genomic analysis. The registry focuses primarily on chronic low back pain because it is the most prevalent anatomical site of pain and causes the greatest disability.. The Centers for Disease ...

I am delighted to welcome two important programs to ACL-the Paralysis Resource Center (PRC) and the State Health Insurance Assistance Programs (SHIPs). These programs are moving to ACL as a result of the 2014 budget recently signed by President Obama.. ACL was formed in April 2012 to advance policy and implement programs that support the rights of older Americans and people with disabilities to live in their communities throughout their lifespan. The missions of the PRC and SHIPs align perfectly with our mission and provide ACL with important new programmatic opportunities to help persons with physical disabilities as well as older adults and people with developmental disabilities.. The PRC provides a comprehensive, national source of information for people living with paralysis and their families to promote health, foster involvement in the community, and improve quality of life. Resources on spinal cord injury, paralysis and mobility-related disabilities, including information and referral by ...
Hi all, As you may recall, the Protein Data Bank in Europe (PDBe; pdbe.org) regularly produces Quips, short stories about QUite Interesting Pdb Structures (pdbe.org/quips). Quips address biologically interesting aspects of one or more PDB entries, coupled with interactive graphics views and often a mini-tutorial or suggestions for further exploration using PDBe services and resources. Today another Quips episode was released. It is about autotaxins, physiologically important proteins that are pursued as anti-cancer drug targets. This Quips was developed together with scientists from the Netherlands Cancer Institute (Tassos Perrakis and Wouter Moolenaar) to accompany their review paper in Nature Reviews Molecular Cell Biology on autotaxin structure and function that was also published today. - For the Quips story (Autotaxins: inhibiting a greasy pocket), go to: http://pdbe.org/quips?story=Autotaxin - For the review paper (Insights into autotaxin: how to produce and present a lipid mediator), ...

Editor-It seems ironic that the issue of 14 December contained both an editorial on the effectiveness of cognitive behavioural treatment1 and a study of rehabilitation after myocardial infarction with negative results.2 Although two possible explanations are dealt with in Richard Mayous editorial (that many of the control group had good outcomes anyway and that the treatment arm offered a uniform treatment for a heterogeneous range of complaints),3 there are other important issues that merit discussion.. DA Jones and RR West set out a number of goals (provide information, increase awareness of stress, teach relaxation, improve stress management, promote positive adjustment to illness, and increase confidence) with the presumed hypothesis that attainment of these aims would reduce morbidity and mortality. Was the lack of effect due to failure to teach a programme that could be utilised by the treated patients, or are psychological techniques ineffective in reducing mortality? The lack of any ...
DAY EIGHTs material comes from the show Fear and Faith by illusionist Derren Brown.. As a magician, Brown mixes traditional magic with psychological techniques and the power of persuasion - all to warn people against the power of manipulation and the dangers of groupthink. His personal position is atheist (after having been raised in a Christian denomination), but though he considers belief in God unnecessary, he doesnt consider it stupid.. In the Fear and Faith episode How to Convert an Atheist, Browns goal is to give self-proclaimed atheists the experience of conversion.. Initially, he does a fascinating little experiment with his 160-person, predominantly atheist audience: he asks who would be willing to perform a satanic rite that involves dedicating oneself to Satan and stabbing the photo of a loved one. Of these 160 people, only 10 or so even believed that Satan exists. Of the 150ish nonbelievers, only very few were willing to do the experiment.. Browns contention is that for ...

1) The trading problem is a business problem - A while back, a trader reported to me that his trading was not making the kind of money that he had hoped. We examined his performance statistics and it indeed seemed as though he was making money. His hit rate on trades was favorable and he was making more money on winning trades than losing ones. His Sharpe ratio--the amount of money he was making per unit of risk taken--was solid. So what was the issue? Quite simply, he had a small trading account. He could not make significant money because he started from a small capital base. If he leveraged his account too much, his drawdowns would eventually place him in a risk-of-ruin situation even though his overall trading was sound. What he needed was greater access to capital. The answer wasnt a psychological technique; nor was the answer to change his trading. The answer was to gain greater access to capital. I helped him identify a proprietary trading firm that fronted his trading and he found far ...
By the way, the first image was somebody on the train to London; the next five are customers waiting at the counter in the Summertown Costa Coffee; and the last is competitors in the Wolvercote Midsummer Festival 2013 dog show. The first image was blind except for the right-hand side of the collar, which I drew blind after glancing at the paper to position it.. I have two questions. First, what psychological techniques could make blind drawing more accurate? There is a tale of a caricaturist who used to attend functions at which he wasnt allowed to draw, and so would draw surreptitiously on a notepad he carried in his pocket. Eventually, his drawings became very accurate. Could the Templar Cross software I mention below help? Are there any methods for teaching the blind to draw which might help?. Second, how can I get the same quality of line in drawings where Im looking at the paper as in my blind drawings? Does psychology have anything to say about this?. A related question is that of ...
Id Rather Protect Than Be Protected & Psychological Techniques for Romance That You Can Use Today. After its first crazy episode, I wasnt sure whether or not Sakamoto Desu ga? would be able to deliver on a second. Luckily, I was totally wrong. Wacdonalds. I think it became pretty apparent that Sakamoto isnt the type of guy to just give something to someone. Sure, hell go help those around him in need, but if youre feeling sorry for yourself, hes going to make you put in the effort before coming to help you. Something that honestly isnt that bad of a policy especially when it comes to bullying. I mean, sure, Sakamoto could have just leapt in and saved Kubota from those two thugs, but why simply give a man a fish when you should be teaching how to fish instead? Something which happily caught me off guard since I never took this show for one where Sakamoto wouldnt necessarily be the one looking cool, cooler, and coolest. But lo and behold, we got to see Kubota, a pretty unappealing ...

As interdisciplinary interventions, especially those that have been specifically designed for this age group, have been shown to improve glycemic control in elderly individuals with diabetes, these people should be referred to a diabetes healthcare team (7-9). Pay-for-performance programs improve a number of quality indicators in this age group (10,11). Telemedicine case management and web-based interventions can improve glycemic control, lipids, blood pressure (BP), psychosocial well-being and physical activity; reduce hypoglycemia and ethnic disparities in care; and allow for detection and remediation of medically urgent situations, as well as reduce hospitalizations (12-21). A pharmaceutical care program can significantly improve medication compliance, as well as the control of diabetes and its associated risk factors (22).. The same glycemic targets apply to otherwise healthy elderly as to younger people with diabetes. In older patients with diabetes of several years duration and ...
In lean older people with type 2 diabetes, the principal metabolic defect is impairment in glucose-induced insulin secretion (84). Initial therapy for these individuals could include agents that stimulate insulin secretion without causing hypoglycemia, such as dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitors. In older people with obesity and type 2 diabetes, the principal metabolic defect is resistance to insulin-mediated glucose disposal, with insulin secretion being relatively preserved (85-87). Initial therapy for older people with obesity and diabetes could involve agents that improve insulin resistance, such as metformin.. There have been no randomized trials of metformin in the older person with diabetes, although clinical experience suggests it is an effective agent. Metformin may reduce the risk of cancer in older people with diabetes (88,89). There is an association between metformin use and lower vitamin B12 levels, and monitoring of vitamin B12 should be considered in older people on this ...

article{8604872, abstract = {Adolescents and young people are arguably the most dynamic and challenging group among populations living with HIV. The adherence to anti-retroviral treatment (ART) is often low among HIV-positive youth, thus creative and context specific interventions are necessary. We aimed at evaluating the usability and effectiveness of the pilot digital peer support platform - ELIMIKA, implemented in Mombasa, Kenya. We applied a pre-post-test design. Data collection consisted of two parts: pre- and post-online knowledge and behavior questionnaires, and a mid-term usability survey. From 90 recruited participants, 81 completed the pre- and post-questionnaires. Overall, the participants were satisfied with the main features of the web platform and stated that they would use it again (95%). However, there was not a significant change in knowledge and behavior, but adherence intentions after 3 months intervention period have improved. This study provides valuable information on ...
Korean researchers have described a novel control system to regulate the expression of a therapeutic transgene by targeting the passenger strand of a microRNA (miR-122) linked to the transgene. The researchers report that a control system based on targeting the passenger strand of miR-122 rather than the guide strand can regulate expression of an exogenous, therapeutic gene, while not affecting the expression of endogenous genes, in an article in Nucleic Acid Therapeutics.

Sports are 10% physical, 90% mental, this common phrase used in sports is easily transferred into the world of injury rehabilitation. Sport psychology has started to be incorporated into the sports medicine realm. Athletic Trainers (ATs) are required to participate in some type of psychological or behavioral classes as part of an athletic training program curriculum. Many people have heard of collegiate or professional athletes using psychological techniques such as imagery, stress reduction and positive self-talk as part of their pre-game regimen. They have credited these techniques as helping their game excel, but what if we transferred these techniques into the athletic training facility? There are some athletes who still feel the stigma of psychosocial help and may not see it as the ATs place to employ sport psychology theories into the rehabilitation program.1 However, these interventions have been shown to have positive effects on athlete compliance to rehabilitation programs, better ...

There is evidence that the global COVID-19 crisis is exacerbating existing inequalities and marginalization of vulnerable groups, including exceptional learners, stateless, street, migrant, and refugee children and youths, and the limited use of frameworks of emergency planning with and for marginalized and at-risk individuals. These challenges are multi-sectoral and intersecting, and they require multi- and interdisciplinary interventions to inform inclusive responses. These issues include being at a greater risk of excluding vulnerable learners from gaining access to equitable education (online/remote and blended education). Intersecting forms of discrimination such as gender, socioeconomic and legal status further exacerbate the problem. This has alerted us to examine the living conditions of marginalized and vulnerable populations around the globe, and to reveal their experiences, problems, and needs from an educational perspective, thus bringing insights into their vulnerabilities during the

Slow to cycle, when under nutritional stress or lactation stress, but response to cycle is immediate when nutrients are plenty.. Ongole Breed Tract:. Originally the breed tract comprises areas where there is no assured or commercial crops, leaving cattle raising as the only profitable proposition by selling bull ghee (Clarified butter), since crops and cultivation are not profitable. The farmers are quite aware of the food, investment, manure, forage, draught animal power and employment linkages, improving through subsistence security, transfer of nutrients, modification of vegetation and finally increasing the human support capacity of the land through Ongole breed of cattle. These cattle raising formed a part of risk education strategy with agriculture, as livestock is a saving account and their calves are interest. However, If something goes awry in this area - such as a mentally or physically unhealthy parent, domestic violence, chronic stress, addiction in the home, or any form of emotional neglect - then we experience developmental trauma, which leads to the brain and nervous system not being able to self regulate or soothe on its own.. As we grow, if our environment doesnt change for the better and were not getting the love, attention and boundaries that we need for healthy growth and development, then this leads to complex trauma with even more symptoms of dysregulation. Dysregulation of the nervous system can manifest in both emotional and physical symptoms. Emotional symptoms include low self esteem, a vicious inner critic, social anxiety, and toxic shame. Physical symptoms are often connected to the digestive tract, the immune system, or chronic pain.. The body and the nervous system want relief! Therefore, it stays in a constant hypervigilant mode which keeps the most primitive part of our ...
Once the initial shock had subsided, these mothers took control of the situation. Watching over encompasses the intense care these children need to survive, and includes monitoring fluid balance, looking for signs of sepsis, and meticulous care of the line and its insertion site. The vigilant, sometimes hypervigilant, watching over contributed to the mothers growing knowledge/experience base. As the mother gained experience and knowledge of the intricacies and patterns of her childs condition and care, she might move to a more relaxed vigilance, although some of the mothers never seemed to relax their vigilant stance.. Mastering the complicated care of this child might be accomplished in a short period of time if no complications arose, the child was not progressing through developmental stages or the care stayed the same. However, typically it took a year before the mother considered herself an expert. Most often in that first year of parenteral nutrition, the central line became infected ...
It was dark. Not just turn-the-light-off dark. Not the whispered good nights or the gentle brush of lips that he could still remember. Not the perfume or the comforting arms. This dark was empty, a yawning space ready to swallow him whole. For a heart-stopping second, Gaels pulse drummed so loudly in his ears, he had thought there was someone else there until he realized the whimpers he could hear were coming from his own throat.. He had stayed on the steps for hours. He could hear voices from behind the door. His hearing was sharp, and he had listened, hypervigilant for any cry from his brother now that Gael wasnt there to protect him. He had finally had to pee down the concrete steps, not daring to move, and he was so thirsty. Gael wasnt really sure how long he had been down there, certainly all the next day because he had heard the TV, and then finally his uncle had let him out with a brusque instruction to get a shower.. Wyatt had cried again when Gael had crept back upstairs. Hed ...

PURPOSE: Increasing Black patients participation in cancer clinical trials is particularly important because of the populations lower survival rate. Accrual to clinical trials remains low among the general population (1-3%), with recruitment of Blacks the lowest of all groups at 0.5-1.5%. INSPIRE-BrC aims to increase trial participation rates among Black breast cancer patients and examine the relationship between the intervention and attitudes/beliefs on the decision to participate. METHODS: The study was approved by the Institutional Review Board at all sites and opened in March 16, 2014. Black breast cancer patients at five MedStar sites will view a 15 minute, culturally-tailored video about clinical trials, which targets six cultural and attitudinal barriers to participation. A pre-test/post-test method is used to determine the impact of the video on three variables -- likely participation in therapeutic clinical trials; attitudes toward therapeutic clinical trials (assessed based on the 6 ...
We developed an innovative home-based HIV self-testing (HIVST) service that included mailing of a free HIVST kit, and providing online real-time instructions and pre-test/post-test counseling (HIVST-OIC). The present parallel-group and non-blinded randomized controlled trial was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of promoting HIVST-OIC in increasing HIV testing rate among 430 men who have sex with men (MSM), with access to online live-chat applications in Hong Kong. At month 6, as compared to the control group, the intervention group reported significantly higher prevalence of HIV testing of any type (89.8 vs. 50.7%; relative risk (RR): 1.77; p < 0.001). Among those who have taken up any HIV testing in the last six months, significant between-group difference was found in multiple male sex partnerships (34.2 vs. 47.7%, RR: 0.72; p = 0.021). HIVST-OIC has a strong potential in increasing prevalence of HIV testing and reducing sexual risk behaviors. Implementation research is warranted. ...

There are indeed few people who are actively engaged in some sport without ever having injured their knee. Regardless of whether we are walking, sitting or standing, the weight of our body puts pressure on our lower extremities making them an easy target for injuries and pain and often we are not aware of it. Knee injuries can be divided into sprains and strains as well as injuries of more important parts such as meniscus and ligaments. The former fall into the category of simpler injuries and it is enough to treat them using physical therapy methods while in more serious injuries, an operation is usually necessary. Thanks to modern orthopaedic methods which are used in the Etela Polyclinic, even with the most complicated injuries, a fast recovery is possible and the patient can return to everyday activities very quickly feeling minimal pain. In case of degenerative problems we perform a range of operations in the knee area, from osteotomies (procedures which correct the misalignment of lower ...
The national price tag for substance abuse is about $500 billion. Between lost productivity, criminal prosecution and health/social programs, the cost of drug abuse is high. Finding effective therapy methods to work with rehab programs is important to successfully lowering the devastating numbers of drug abusers. Interestingly, one of the best drug recovery therapies may also be one of the most low tech and cost-effective - massage therapy.. Most therapies during drug rehab are highly interactive and demand something from the patient. Whether it is through exercise, counseling, 12-step or some other approach, the patient is asked to think, communicate or practice a new skill throughout much of rehab. Massage is different, as it is one therapy that is almost wholly passive, yet it yields significant benefits. A 1998 study conducted in Norway helped to show how massage therapy benefits patients.. Stress is a serious impediment to addiction recovery. Patients who feel stressed and anxious are ...
What CBT & ERP is and How They Are Used in Todays Health Field to Treat OCD. CBT and ERP are two different treatment options available to treat OCD. CBT is short for cognitive behavioral therapy. This therapy is a talking therapy that aims to solve problems by focusing on identifying the thoughts, emotions and habits that lead to a person repeating the same pattern that leads to the problem.. ERP is short for exposure and response prevention. This is a treatment method that has the subject confronting their fears. It also identifies the thinking process and emotional patterns used that leads to the subject repeating a habit. It then attempts to get the person to respond differently to the way he or she used to respond by refraining from the previous behavior.. Both therapy methods are used to treat OCD. OBJECTIVE: To review the literature systematically and perform meta-analyses to address these questions: 1) Is there evidence that self-measured blood pressure (BP) without other augmentation is superior to office-based measurement of BP for achieving better BP control or for preventing adverse clinical outcomes that are related to elevated BP? 2) What is the optimal target for BP lowering during antihypertensive therapy in adults? 3) In adults with hypertension, how do various antihypertensive drug classes differ in their benefits and harms compared with each other as first-line therapy? METHODS: Electronic literature searches were performed by Doctor Evidence, a global medical evidence software and services company, across PubMed and EMBASE from 1966 to 2015 using key words and relevant subject headings for randomized controlled trials that met eligibility criteria defined for each question ...
The spinal orthopedics team headed by Prof. Robert Pflugmacher and senior physician Dr. Yorck Rommelspacher treats the entire spectrum of this popular ailment. Conservative therapy includes physiotherapy, pain management, and infiltration, in which a locally acting anesthetic is injected together with an anti-inflammatory drug directly to the pain point. However, if these methods result in no further complaint reduction, state-of-the-art therapy methods including minimally invasive, endoscopic surgery are options to consider. These methods on the contrary to older approaches are gentler for the patient as only small cuts are made. Our goal is to make our patients fit again as soon as possible, says Prof. Wirtz.. ...
Penises come in all sorts of lengths, sizes and shapes. Some of them are tiny while most are average sized. Some of them are pretty huge. Therefore, gay men always want to know where they are on the scale. A personal estimation is always better done if you know what the average penis size is.. According to studies, the average penis is between 5 and 7 inches in size when fully erect. This is the length from the tip to the base. In terms of girth, the average penis has a circumference of 5 inches. Anything less than this is considered small. A penis that has bigger dimensions than this is considered large. With this information, gay men can identify where they are on the international scale of average size.. Men can utilize the scientific findings on penis traction to help determine if these non-invasive therapy methods are something worth utilizing to help their penis size.. ...
