Adventist Health Studies (AHS) is a series of long-term medical research projects of Loma Linda University with the intent to measure the link between lifestyle, diet, disease and mortality of Seventh-day Adventists. Seventh-day Adventists have a lower risk than other Americans of certain diseases, and many researchers hypothesize that this is due to dietary and other lifestyle habits. This provides a special opportunity to answer scientific questions about how diet and other health habits affect the risk of suffering from many chronic diseases.[1]. Two studies on Adventist health involving 24,000 and 34,000 Californian Adventists were conducted over the last 40 years. Although not sponsored by the Adventist church itself, the church is supportive of the studies. These studies have been the subject of significant national media coverage on programs such as ABC News: World News Tonight, Good Morning America and in the National Geographic feature article "Longevity: The Secrets of a Long ...

Protestantism in Brazil began in the 19th century, and grew in the 20th century after restrictions against Protestants were abolished throughout Latin America. The 2010 Census reported that 22.2% of the Brazilian population is Protestant, about 44 million people, making it one of the worlds largest concentration of Protestants. Brazilian Protestantism is primarily represented by Evangelical Protestant and Pentecostal churches, and a smaller proportion of Baptists. The remainder is made up of Lutherans, Adventists, Presbyterians and other mainline Protestant traditions. Protestantism was first practiced by Huguenot travelers in attempts to colonize the country while it was under the Portuguese colonial rule. These attempts, however, would not persist. A French mission sent by John Calvin was established in 1557, in one of the islands of Guanabara Bay, where the France Antarctique was founded. On March 10 of the same year, these Calvinists held the first Protestant service in Brazil and, ...

Evangelicals everywhere are flooding into political activity, frequently without a carefully developed biblical framework or reliable socio-political analysis. As a result, evangelicals are often unnecessarily divided, inconsistent, and ineffective in their public engagement.Toward an Evangelical Public Policy is designed to guide conscientious evangelicals in their ongoing national political involvement. It serves to deepen evangelicals understanding of political involvement and unify and strengthen the evangelical presence in politics.Contributors to this volume include David Gushee, Max Stackhouse, Paul Marshall, Nicholas Wolterstorff, and Richard Cizik.

As a pastor, Ive sat through MANY a denominational gathering over the years (Southern Baptist, Cooperative Baptist, Alliance of Baptist, Progressive Baptists, National Baptists, and American Baptists) and as executive editor of Baptists Today, I covered many a Baptist event, but NEVER have I felt what I felt tonight, being present for ABCUSAs Missions Summit in Overland Park: I heard the names of Adoniram and Ann Judson, Abe Lincoln, Walter Rauschenbush, Martin Luther King Jr, Edwin T. Many thanks to you and to the many others who had a part in making this evening - and the rest of our Missions Summit - what it is and will be.. Dear President-Elect Trump:. Congratulations on your election as President. We write you as evangelical and Catholic pro-life Christian leaders who share your faith. We pray that God gives you the wisdom and compassion you need to be the leader He is calling you to be.. Psalm 72:13 says a righteous king "will have compassion on the poor and needy, and the lives of the needy he will save" (NASB). Jesus also teaches us to care for the vulnerable (e.g. Mt. 25), and when God created humanity he commanded us to be good stewards of His creation (Gen. 1:28; 2:15). Together these are linked in our defense of life: from the moment of conception until natural death a whole life ethic permeates both Catholic social teaching and the evangelical commitment to the sanctity of life, as articulated by The National Association of Evangelicals. Caring for Gods creation is a matter of life and our faith compels us to act, especially to reduce pollution. We have made important progress while our economy has ...

Posted By Phillip Morgan on Aug 8, 2017 , 0 comments. At the turn of the twentieth century, very little was known about the development of the Palmer Movement of Free Will Baptists. Since then, historians have gathered and synthesized myriad documents into excellent narrative accounts.[1] Now Free Will Baptist historians need to begin filling in details and applying relevant historical analysis.. Our understanding of how Free Will Baptists spread geographically could benefit greatly from such research. Two periods of intense migration occurred in the history of the Palmer Movement. By applying migration pattern analysis, we can better understand this complex process. For example, migration analysis strengthens Benjamin Lakers connection with the English General Baptists and offers insights into why so many Free Will Baptist churches have ties to the Separate Baptists.. The Story We Know. Benjamin Laker emigrated from Surrey, England, to the colony of North Carolina in 1684. Laker had converted ...
It is perhaps an open question whether Trumps candidacy represents a true change in evangelicals DNA or whether it simply revealed previously hidden traits, but the shift from values to nostalgia voter has undoubtedly transformed their political ethics. The clearest example of evangelical ethics bending to fit the Trump presidency is white evangelicals abandonment of their conviction that personal character matters for elected officials. In 2011 and again just ahead of the 2016 election, PRRI asked Americans whether a political leader who committed an immoral act in his or her private life could nonetheless behave ethically and fulfill their duties in their public life. In 2011, consistent with the "values voter" brand and the traditional evangelical emphasis on the importance of personal character, only 30 percent of white evangelical Protestants agreed with this statement. But with Trump at the top of the Republican ticket in 2016, 72 percent of white evangelicals said they believed a ...

Hawkins, who attended the arguments, encouraged prayer for the court afterward.. "We are thankful for the opportunity to make our case before the High Court and pray for wisdom for the justices and favor in the outcome," Hawkins said in a written release. "We are thankful for the prayers of so many in our Southern Baptist and broader evangelical family; this is the time to continue praying for these men and women who will render the verdict.". Russell Moore, president of the Southern Baptist Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission (ERLC), pointed to the pending decisions importance for the church and the country.. As Ive written about mental illness and the church over the last couple of years, Ive addressed the church in general. But today I especially want to address my fellow evangelicals.. A recent LifeWay Research survey produced some interesting statistics related to mental illness, among them two stats that reveal a shocking contrast. Among the evangelical, fundamentalist, or born-again Christians surveyed, 64 percent believe churches should do more to prevent suicide. At the same time, 48 percent believe serious mental illness can be cured by prayer alone.. Now heres what I find shocking: That second statistic reveals an attitude that actually accomplishes the opposite of what 64 percent claimed they want the church to do. Heres a tip: If you believe churches should do more to help prevent suicide, heres one tangible and quick way to help right now: Stop telling people they can cure their mental illness with only prayer.. Granted, just because people say mental illness can be overcome with ...

A hilarious new book provides instructions on how to argue the big issues with ultra-conservative fundamentalists. Editors Note: The following excerpt has been reprinted with permission from The Sinners Guide to the Evangelical Right by Rob Lanham, Penguin Putnam, 2006.The real theological problem in America today is no longer the religious Right, but the nationalistic religion of the Bush administration. -- Reverend Jim Wallis, Gods Politics.Until the sixties, evangelicals were just as likely to be Democrats as they were to be Republicans.
I ended up deciding to become an Army Chaplain and to do this I would need to obtain an Masters of Divinity degree. I left the active Army in September 1987 and attended a liberal seminary. Part of my reason for going there, even though I was still conservative in my politics and faith, was that since I had come to the realization that the evangelical world did not offer me any good answers as to why the Bible had not worked in my sons birth. I reasoned that perhaps a liberal school would offer me some way to make sense of what had all happened. It did: The problem was that the scriptures were not to be taken literally, but that they were mythic and legendary by nature. I also came to realize that as an evangelical and charismatic Christian, I had never been taught to "contextualize" the scriptures. I read in regards to its original time, setting and social location. Yanking versus out of their historical and social context and saying that what was written 2,000 years ago can be applied to ...

The national standard for "door-to-balloon" time is 90 minutes. Door-to-balloon time is a measure of how quickly a team is able to restore blood flow in a patient having a heart attack; it is tracked from when the patient arrives in the hospital "door" (or emergency department) to the point in time when angioplasty is used to open the blocked heart artery causing the heart attack. The sooner the blockage is opened, the less damage to the heart muscle.. Rather than transporting patients to another hospital for emergency angioplasty, our patients can be taken to Evangelicals cath lab, minimizing time to treatment, and allowing diagnosis and treatment to happen all in one place. Evangelicals "door-to-balloon" time is consistently below national standard.. ...

The environmental movement has a political agenda that has enjoyed some success and in the process generated a significant backlash movement. Evangelical Christians are on both sides of this controversy, causing no small confusion in the ranks of believers. Several case studies of anti-environmentalism show the dimensions of this controversy: 1. Criticism of the Evangelical Declaration on the Care of Creation; 2. The charge that global eco-war is being planned as a way for government to gain more control over people; 3. The emergence of the Wise Use movement; 4. The writings of E. Calvin Beisner and Larry Burkett, an economist and a financial advisor, challenging environmentalism from a Christian perspective; and others. Some people argue that the battles over environmentalism are basically political, and that the Christian attack on the environmental movement is primarily a political attack from the right in the name of Christianity. In this paper, I explore the scientific dimensions of the ...
