It thus gives ratios of weight for height (W/H), height for age (H/A) and weight for age (W/A) which respectively determine acute malnutrition, chronic malnutrition and global malnutrition. The results show that in a cohort of 129 children, aged 0 to 59 months, 5.22 % of children suffer from acute malnutrition, 14.78 % suffer from chronic malnutrition and 7.75 % are suffering from global malnutrition. Two patients with malabsorption syndrome and weight loss refractory to conventional pharmacologic and dietary therapy were evaluated on a metabolic ward. Baseline studies indicated moderate to severe protein-energy malnutrition, and severe energy, fat, and nitrogen malabsorption. Metabolic balance studies on low-fat elemental formulas infused nasoenterally over 18-hour periods indicated improved retention of nitrogen, phosphorus, calcium, magnesium, and energy when compared with a solid food diet. Because this dietary modification appeared to correct their malabsorption, both patients learned to insert the nasoenteral tube themselves, and a low-calorie solid-food diet combined with nocturnal tube feedings was continued at home. Purpose: To study the prevalence of intestinal parasitosis, anaemia and protein-energy malnutrition (PEM) and to analyse the possible association between these diseases and other variables of a biological, clinical and socio-economic nature. Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted in the Joana Bezerra (urban) and Jaboatão (rural) areas of Pernambuco, Brazil. The groups were selected at random and consisted of children and adolescents between 1 and 16 years of age and of both sexes. Two samples of faeces and one of blood were collected. Background. Although amino acid peritoneal dialysate (AAPD) substitution is thought to improve protein-energy malnutrition in patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis (PD), it may also increase plasma homocysteine (Hcy) levels due to the methionine load in the dialysate. However, it is still unclear which factors are important for elevating Hcy in patients treated with AAPD.. Methods. Sixteen malnourished PD patients (age 48±18 years) were treated daily with one exchange of 1.1% AAPD for 3 months. The effects of AAPD on nutrition, Hcy, methionine, leptin and insulin resistance were studied. We also analysed factors that influenced plasma Hcy levels.. Results.
