The law is vague on prostitution itself.[25] The primary law dealing with the status of sex workers is the 1956 law referred to as The Immoral Traffic (Suppression) Act (SITA). According to this law, prostitutes can practise their trade privately but cannot legally solicit customers in public.[1] A BBC article, however, mentions that prostitution is illegal in India; the Indian law does not refer to the practice of selling ones own sexual service as "prostitution".[26] Clients can be punished for sexual activity in proximity to a public place. Organised prostitution (brothels, prostitution rings, pimping, etc.) is illegal. As long as it is done individually and voluntarily, a woman (male prostitution is not recognised in any law in India but even consensual anal intercourse is illegal under section 377 of the Indian Penal Code) can use her body in exchange for material benefit. In particular, the law forbids a sex worker to carry on her profession within 200 yards of a public place. Unlike as ...
The United Nations Convention for the Suppression of the Traffic in Persons and the Exploitation of the Prostitution of Others[20] favors criminalizing the activities of those seen as exploiting or coercing prostitutes (so-called "pimping" and "procuring" laws), while leaving sex workers free from regulation. The Convention states that "prostitution and the accompanying evil of the traffic in persons for the purpose of prostitution are incompatible with the dignity and worth of the human person".[21] Sigma Huda, a UN special reporter on trafficking in persons said: "For the most part, prostitution as actually practiced in the world usually does satisfy the elements of trafficking. It is rare that one finds a case in which the path to prostitution and/or a persons experience with prostitution does not involve, at the very least, an abuse of power and/or an abuse of vulnerability. Power and vulnerability in this context must be understood to include disparities based on gender, race, ethnicity ...
The legality of prostitution in Europe varies by country. Some countries outlaw the act of engaging in sexual activity in exchange for money, while others allow prostitution itself, but not most forms of procuring (such as operating brothels, facilitating the prostitution of another, deriving financial gain from the prostitution of another, soliciting/loitering). In eight European countries (The Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Greece, Turkey, Hungary, and Latvia), prostitution is legal and regulated. The degree of enforcement of the anti-prostitution laws vary by country, by region and by city. In many places, there is a big discrepancy between the laws which exist on the books and what happens in practice. Depending on the country, various prostitution related activities may be prohibited (where a specific law forbids such activity), decriminalized (where there is no specific law either forbidding or allowing and regulating the activity), or regulated (where a specific law ...
Sex workers said they prefer self-collection of samples for sexually transmitted infections, British researchers said. Researchers at the University of Westminster tested a simple and convenient method for screening female commercial sex workers for sexually transmitted infections without the need for them to attend clinics. Dr. Patrick Kimmitt said the women were given tampons that they could use to collect their own samples and post them to the laboratory. Kimmitt said despite their risk of exposure to sexually transmitted infections, female commercial sex workers are reluctant to attend clinics for regular screenings. This may be due to unsuitability of opening times, fear of stigma or the false concern of the possibility of being reported to the police.. ...
I am for legal non-forced consensual prostitution (for adults with adults). First for me as in all things: people own themselves, thus have all rights to their body to use as they wish. Also if prostitution were legalized, then it can also be regulated and made more safe. Applicable and newly created laws would make it safer and more healthy for both workers and clients. Prostitution is never going to go away, but we can make it safer for everyone involved.. In 1949, the United Nations adopted a resolution in favor of the decriminalization of prostitution, which has been ratified by fifty countries. The National Task Force on Prostitution suggests that over one million people in the US have worked as prostitutes. Estimates in some larger cities found that 20-30% of prostitutes are male. One report cites 60% of the abuse against street prostitutes perpetrated by clients, 20% by police, and 20% in domestic relationships.. In a study in London, 50% of clients were married or cohabiting. 70% of ...
I come to Paula Bartleys book as someone who has for a number of years, been examining the extent and nature of prostitution in Ireland. Attitudes towards prostitutes and prostitution within Irish culture were in many ways similar to those that prevailed in England. They were also distinctly different. The difference becomes most obvious from the late nineteenth century when nationalist Ireland began to further differentiate its culture from that of England and when Catholicism as a social, ethical and moral force was supreme. It is also from the end of the nineteenth century that Bartley sees distinct developments emerging in the area of social purity and attitudes towards prostitution in England. Her book is a study of attempts to rid society of the curse of prostitution through prevention and reform, placed firmly within the context of rescue work. There is already a significant body of scholarship on prostitution and much of that scholarship, particularly as it relates to England, ...
... provides a critical re-examination of the growing body of literature on exiting and desistance. Moving beyond accounts which are mainly centred on men desisting from crime, this book focuses on female desistance, particularly in relation to prostitution and the exiting process. With interviews from over one hundred women involved in prostitution, the authors uniquely examine the exiting process considering not only the barriers and obstacles that women face when trying to leave prostitution, but also their individual strengths, capacities and aspirations. In this way, this book aims to present an approach that is more positive and progressive. It also provides a guide to best practice through an examination of the types of support that are currently available to those women involved in both on-street and off-street prostitution, and develops an outline model of support. Written by a highly experienced team of experts in the field, this book provides useful guidelines for ...
Prostitution has existed in Tasmania since its early days as a penal colony, when large numbers of convict women started arriving in the 1820s. Some of the women who were transported there already had criminal records related to prostitution. Prostitution was not so much a profession as a way of life for some women to make ends meet, particularly in a society in which there was a marked imbalance of gender, and convict women had no other means of income. Certainly brothels were established by the end of the 1820s, and records show girls as young as 12 were involved, while prostitution was associated with the female factory at Cascades. Nevertheless, the concept of fallen women and division of women into good and bad was well established. In an attempt to produce some law and order the Vagrancy Act 1824 was introduced.[1]. The Van Diemens Land Asylum for the Protection of Destitute and Unfortunate Females (1848) was the first establishment for women so designated. Other attempts were the ...
Supporters of the prostitution industry want us to believe that women would be safe if mens purchase of women for sex is legalized. In the name of womens security, they are arguing in an Ontario court this week that male johns and pimps have a constitutional right to buy and sell women. They are claiming that prostitution is womens work and that legalizing it would advance womens liberty. Opposition is dismissed as based on "moral panic." A closer look at the violent reality of prostitution exposes the utter fallacy of these claims.. ...
BERLIN, January 31, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) - News agencies around the world are carrying the story of a young German woman, a qualified information technologist, who has been told that she faces suspension of her government relief benefits if she refuses to take a job as a prostitute in a Berlin brothel.. The unemployed woman, who has not been named, had indicated her willingness to take jobs outside her field and has worked in a café. Britains Daily Telegraph reported that the woman, who has not been named, received a phone call offering her an interview for a job. She did not realize the job was prostitution in a brothel until she telephoned. After the woman refused, she was told by the job centre that her benefits would be cut off if she did not go into prostitution.. Germanys unemployment rate has reached the highest levels since reunification in 1990 and its welfare laws have recently been reformed. The new welfare regulations and the legalization of prostitution have combined to ...

ON PROSTITUTION, ART AND PHILOSOPHY by Peter Morrell. On prostitution, art and philosophy. Sir,. As so often happens, BMJ raises a complex social issue and then runs away from it by offering little analysis of its fundamental aspects. In offering some reflections upon this topic, I hope to give firstly some comments about sex in general and prostitution in particular; second, to give some thoughts about the men who use prostitutes; third, to look at the various modes of condemning both and a few refutations.. With very few exceptions, sex ordinarily occurs between two people who know and like each other, who are attractive to each other and who have at least a modicum of affection for one another. Women and churchgoers predominantly tend to draw a wider, though incorrect principle from this observation - that affection is an essential pre-requisite ingredient, while most men can more often and genuinely take or leave the affection side. The widespread existence of a thriving soft porn trade and ...

Strongs lawyer, Daniel Lilley, has filed a motion to dismiss the first promotion of prostitution charge, arguing that prosecutors have failed to provide him with evidence in the case as required by the rules of discovery.. Lilley had filed a similar motion in August. During a hearing the following month, Superior Court Justice Joyce Wheeler decided that dismissal would not be an appropriate sanction because there was no evidence that prosecutors acted in bad faith.. Prosecutors said at the time that they were grappling with extremely large amounts of data seized during police searches.. Lilleys motion to dismiss is one of a number of issues that may be addressed at a hearing in Cumberland County Unified Criminal Court on Tuesday.. The Zumba instructor, 29-year-old Alexis Wright of Wells, was also indicted last week. She faces 106 counts, mostly engaging in prostitution, promotion of prostitution, conspiracy, tax offenses and charges related to receiving welfare benefits when ineligible. She ...
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and HIV are largely preventable diseases, as they result directly and indirectly from potentially modifiable factors such as those related to cultural, individual and socioeconomic conditions and access to health services.. The practice of prostitution or commercial sex is something that has existed or been identified in all societies throughout history.1 ,2 According to the report by the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV-AIDS (UNAIDS),3 there are approximately 34 million people infected with HIV worldwide, and it emphasises that commercial sex workers (CSWs) are one of the groups at the greatest risk of acquiring and transmitting STIs/HIV. The report also underlines that there is currently a serious need for effective strategies and measures to raise awareness and improve the healthcare, control, treatment and social support networks of CSWs and their clients to reduce the burden of morbidity, mortality and disability that STIs/HIV cause(s) to ...
The operation began after police said they received numerous complaints from residents and business owners in the area of FM 1960 and Interstate 45.. Four of the 44 people arrested claimed they were victims of human trafficking and five were identified as pimps. One of the alleged pimps had a 2-year-old child and a stolen handgun in his car while he delivered a prostitute, police said.. The arrests follow multiple other crackdowns by police in Houston and Harris County this summer.. In mid-August, more than 250 people were arrested in a massive, weeks-long sting as part of the national, annual "National Johns Suppression Initiative" that this year included 37 law enforcement agencies in 17 states.. Another 138 were arrested in a similar sting last year.. While Herman could not say definitively Thursday if prostitution crimes were up or down in recent years, he noted that the department and other agencies have changed their approach to handling prostitution, opting to try to stymie smaller, ...

REPLY TO PROFESSOR R WEISS BY DR. VF TURNER OF THE PERTH GROUP. JULY 21st 1999. Dear Professor Weiss,. Scientists should be particularly hard on hypotheses. An hypothesis must explain and predict everything. For example, the HIV theory has to explain why, in Western countries, HIV/AIDS has remained in the original risk groups. It is claimed that HIV/AIDS is spread predominantly by sexual contact of one kind or another and "everyone is at risk" from "a virus that does not discriminate". But prostitutes who do not use drugs are not infected with HIV. In Australia for example, a decade after the beginning of the AIDS era, the number of prostitutes infected by sexual intercourse, despite their being "seriously at risk of HIV infection", was zero. In 1994, Manaloto reported on the "Natural history of HIV infection in Filipino females commercial sex workers". Over seven years 72/53,903 (0.01%) were found to be HIV positive and "Intravenous drug use was denied in all cases". We can take a step further ...

The unintended but predictable consequence of how the real villains - pimps and other traffickers in human misery - will respond to this new law isnt difficult to foresee. Pimping and pandering will still be against the law whether it involves running adult women or young girls. But legalizing child prostitution will only incentivize the increased exploitation of underage girls. Immunity from arrest means law enforcement cant interfere with minors engaging in prostitution - which translates into bigger and better cash flow for the pimps. Simply put, more time on the street and less time in jail means more money for pimps, and more victims for them to exploit ...
Just curious, how can one support abortion rights (my body, my choice, state has no right to decide for me what she does with her body, etc) but NOT equally support the right of women to choose to engage in sex for money, i.e. prostitution? In both cases, its is 100% use of a womans body, made by the woman in question. What would then be the rational argument by a Pro-Choice Supporter AGAINTS legalization of prostitution as a protected federal right, same as abortion?
Kent police detectives began their investigation of Overton in May when undercover Kent officers contacted an 18 year old woman for prostitution activity on Pacific Highway South," Lowery said in a statement. For me, this news brought to mind a fall 2009 dispatch from the Daily NK in Chinese (and its English translation) which had indicated that a prostitution scandal had shaken the city. In the interest of providing more context for the current RFA story, I have gone back and expanded upon the earlier Daily NK translation about the practice of prostitution in Hyesan. My modified format has the original Chinese followed by my modified English version. For a more detailed description of how this content significantly differs from the Daily NKs original presentation of the story in English, see here.. The re-translation is followed by some commentary and a note on the concept of the "flower girl" in the DPRK.. Prostitution Shanghai China. The oldest occupation in the world is illegal but as in most countries, prostitution in Shanghai China is flourishing. It is relatively easy to avoid ladies of the night if you know what to look for but in some, especially small or locally-run hotels, it can become a nuisance as the room telephone rings at 11pm to see if you would like a
WASHINGTON (AP) - Authorities rescued 105 children who were forced into prostitution and arrested 150 pimps and others in a three-day law enforcement sweep in 76 American cities, the FBI said Monday. The victims, almost all girls, range in age from 13 to 17. The largest numbers of children rescued were in San Francisco, Detroit, Milwaukee, Denver and New Orleans. The campaign, known as Operation Cross Country, was conducted under the FBIs Innocence Lost initiative. Child prostitution remains a persistent threat to children across the country, Ron Hosko, assistant director of the bureaus criminal investigative division, told a press conference. The FBI said the campaign has resulted in rescuing 2,700 children since 2003.

Objectives: To assess the feasibility of testing indoor commercial sex workers (CSW) for Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae in an outreach setting.. Methods: All CSWs seen on outreach over a six week period were offered self-taken vulval swabs for Chlamydia and gonorrhoea testing. Feasibility was assessed by all the outreach workers on a standardised proforma.. Results: Of the 93 women offered the service 40 accepted, of whom 5 (12%) had not previously accessed sexual health services. The majority of women declining the service had recently attended a sexuaol health clinic. Three cases of Chlamydia and one of gonorrhoea were diagnosed. The cost per sexually transmitted infection (STI) was £392.50. Conclusions: Most of this group of women were knowledgeable about sexual health and were already having regular check ups, but a significant minority did not know how to access STI care. Offering STI testing on outreach was feasible and cost effective. ...

The combination of using injection drugs, smoking crack cocaine, having multiple sex partners, and inconsistent condom use results in substantial risk for acquiring and transmitting HIV, and many drug dependent adults who have been arrested on charges of prostitution fit this profile. Existing interventions for reducing HIV risk have had limited efficacy in drug-dependent sex workers, and criminal justice approaches have been ineffective despite their high cost. A potentially ideal alternative is to divert drug-dependent arrestees from prosecution to a treatment that reduces drug use and HIV sex risk behaviors, while providing job skills training and promoting community employment to alleviate the financial need to continue sex work. In order to provide an effective therapeutic alternative to criminal prosecution, the investigators propose to develop a multifaceted intervention that includes opiate agonist treatment (i.e., methadone OR buprenorphine) and the Therapeutic Workplace. Resistance to HIV infection in a cohort of commercial sex workers living in Nairobi, Kenya, is linked to mucosal and antiinflammatory factors that may be influenced by the vaginal microbiota. Since bacterial vaginosis (BV), a polymicrobial dysbiosis characterized by low levels of protective Lactobacillus organisms, is an established risk factor for HIV infection, we investigated whether vaginal microbiology was associated with HIV-exposed seronegative (HESN) or HIV-seropositive (HIV(+)) status in this cohort. A subset of 44 individuals was selected for deep-sequencing analysis based on the chaperonin 60 (cpn60) universal target (UT), including HESN individuals (n = 16), other HIV-seronegative controls (HIV-N, n = 16), and HIV(+) individuals (n = 12). Our findings indicate exceptionally high phylogenetic resolution of the cpn60 UT using reads as short as 200 bp, with 54 species in 29 genera detected in this group. Contrary to our initial hypothesis, few differences between HESN and HIV-N women ...

Southeast Asian women work in several different branches of prostitution, such as sex clubs, bars, brothels, peep shows, live-show sex theaters and escort services. Only a small number of them work as window prostitutes. In some clubs the women earn ten to twenty percent of profits on drinks and thirty to fifty percent on sex. In businesses where the women dance or act, they get a steady income of three to five hundred guilders per week. Some of their income goes to the club owner for room and board. The womens earnings contrast bitterly with those of the bar or club owner. In some clubs clients pay a fixed fee of two to three hundred guilders. This entitles them to drinks, women and entertainment. Working hours and sanitary conditions vary from club to club. Some women work and live in small compartments. Usually the women work from eleven in the morning to late into the night and often they still have to clean their room and the club afterwards. Exploitation by club owners is common. One ...
The Canadian Public Health Association says regulating the sex industry under existing occupational health and safety regulations would help deal with some of the root causes of prostitution, such as poverty and homelessness.
According to Bakwesegha, prostitution is caused not by biological and psychological factors but by socio-economic pressures exerted on an individual by urbanisation, industrialisation and migration resulting from the Western capitalistic system.. Women become prostitutes mainly due to the brutality of economic problems.. "If we cannot solve the economic problem of these marginal women, if we cannot find well-paying jobs for them, if we cannot close, or at least narrow, the glaring gap between the rich and the poor in our society, then it is inhuman for us to start persecuting them," sociologist Bakwesegha argues.. He contends that when a prostitute sells her sex to a man in order to obtain money to pay off her sisters school fees, all that she is doing is to promote a socially desirable good (education) in society" and that when she sells her body to a wealthy man hers is an effort in the direction of closing the gap between the poor and the rich.. Additionally, the writer says, one would ...
