Refilling propane tanks at a gas station is a convenient way to have extra supplies on hand at all times, but some people are worried that this practice is dangerous. Propane tanks are produced to be filled with propane for just one use, so it seems logical that refilling them would cause them to leak or explode. However, there is no evidence that this is true: people have been refilling propane tanks for decades with no unfortunate consequences. One of the most popular ways to refill your camping propane tank is to find a local propane service company that refills large 1lb propane tanks and has a refill adapter for your propane tank size.. For years, there have been two camps when it comes to refilling propane tanks: one that says its safe, and the other that says its dangerous. The truth is, its both. Refilling propane tanks isnt always dangerous if you follow some basic safety steps, but its the exception, not the rule. The problem is that the people who refill the propane tanks are not ...

N2 - The potential for catalytically enhanced ignition in low-heat rejection Diesel engines has been experimentally studied under engine simulated conditions in a high pressure chemical flow reactor. Results are presented for propane oxidation on platinum at 6 and 10 atmospheres, at temperatures from 800K to 1050K, and at equivalence ratios from 0.5 to 4.0. For turbulent transport rates which are typical of those in an engine, as much as 20% of the fuel was found to react on the catalyst before the onset of the gas-phase ignition reactions. Depending on the adiabaticity of the combustion chamber walls, this could lead to significant thermal enhancement of the gas-phase ignition process. Evidence of chemical enhancement was also observed, at 10 atm under very fuel rich conditions, in terms of a change in ...

We know that propane is used to make isopropanol, a key ingredient in many CDC-recommended hand sanitizers. It is also the raw material used to make polypropylene, which is widely used in many medical applications and to make protective gear such as face shields, masks, surgical gowns and gloves. There are also many other positive uses of propane that enhance our everyday lives. Throughout the summer months, we use propane to heat our pools, repel mosquitoes, and fire up our grills, generators and fire pits. Propane tankless water heaters can offer an unlimited supply of flowing hot water and lower bills by about 30% compared to electric models. Propane is also becoming more widely used for yard equipment like lawnmowers, trimmers and blowers. Propane happens to be the worlds third-most-common transportation fuel, behind gasoline and diesel. The popularity of propane makes sense, since it is abundantly available right in our backyard, is affordable, and is one of the cleanest fuel sources ...
At room temperature, and under normal atmospheric pressure, propane is a gas. In fact, in order to get propane to change into its liquid form, you have to either cool it to below its boiling point of -43.6 degrees Fahrenheit, or put it under pressure. Since liquid propane will become a gas when released from a pressurized container, theres no need for an intermediary vaporizing device when you wish to use it. This makes propane well-suited for portable stoves, since turning the valve on the tank releases the fuel, ready to burn.. Though propane has no color or odor of its own, it is odorized during processing to make its presence detectable. If propane is simply released into the open air, it will dissipate. On the other hand, if it is leaked into a closed space, propane gas will settle along the ground as it is heavier than air.. ...

Silt, CO- By Ivy Vogel, Post Independent Staff - A 54-year-old Silt man remains in critical condition after his trailer exploded April 16.. Robert Leo Corrigan burned 97 percent of his body in a propane gas explosion.. Corrigan, who hitched his trailer to a lot in Green Diamond Campground, was in the shower when his trailer exploded.. Earlier in the day, Corrigan changed his propane refrigerator to a gas refrigerator but did not properly disconnect the propane line, officials think.. As a result, propane, which is a vapor gas, filled Corrigans trailer. When he turned on the hot water in the shower the flame from the water heater ignited the methane gas in the trailer. No one else was hurt in the explosion.. Corrigans sister, Jennifer Sutter of Washington, said Corrigan is in a critical care unit. Hes received a tracheotomy and is trying to fight an infection, Sutter said.. No further information on Corrigan was available.. When used correctly, propane is safe for household use. Selectively deuterated and methylated analogs of the nematocide 1,2-dibromo-3-chloropropane (DBCP) were compared to DBCP in causing acute renal damage in rats. All of the six deuterated analogs tested at 340 mumol/kg, including the perdeutero compound, failed to significantly alter the kidney necrosis observed at 48 hr compared to DBCP. Furthermore, when the perdeutero analog was administered at several doses (42.5, 85, 170, and 340 mumol/kg), it caused kidney damage that was not significantly different than that caused by an equivalent molar dose of nondeuterated DBCP. Of the five methylated analogs tested at 170 and 340 mumol/kg, only C3-methyl-DBCP and 1,2-dibromo-4-chlorobutane caused nephrotoxicity. The C2-methyl-, C1-dimethyl-, and C2-methyl-DBCP analogs failed to cause renal necrosis determined 48 hr after dosing. In distribution studies DBCP, perdeutero-DBCP, and all the methylated analogs were found to concentrate in the kidney approximately 25 times relative to plasma 1 hr after administration
Propane was discovered by the French chemist Marcellin Berthelot in 1857.[5] It was first identified as a volatile component in gasoline by Walter O. Snelling of the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1910. Although the compound was known long before this, Snellings work was the beginning of the propane industry in the United States. The volatility of these lighter hydrocarbons caused them to be known as wild because of the high vapor pressures of unrefined gasoline. On March 31, the New York Times reported on Snellings work with liquefied gas, saying a steel bottle will carry enough gas to light an ordinary home for three weeks.[6]. It was during this time that Snelling, in cooperation with Frank P. Peterson, Chester Kerr, and Arthur Kerr, created ways to liquefy the LP gases during the refining of natural gasoline. Together, they established American Gasol Co., the first commercial marketer of propane. Snelling had produced relatively pure propane by 1911, and on March 25, 1913, his method of ...

In this work, several metal oxides and zinc salts were used to catalyze propylene carbonate (PC) synthesis from urea and propylene glycol (PG). According to the results of catalytic test and characterization, the catalytic pattern of ZnO was different from that of other metal oxides such as CaO, MgO and La|sub|2|/sub|O|sub|3|/sub|, but similar to that of zinc salts. In fact, the leaching of Zn species took place during reaction for ZnO. And ZnO was found to be the precursor of homogenous catalyst for reaction of urea and PG. Thus, the relationship between the amount of dissolved zinc species and the catalytic performance of employed ZnO was revealed. In addition, a possible reaction mechanism over ZnO was discussed based on the catalytic runs and the characterization of XRD, FTIR, and element analysis.

There are three significant categories of RV propane regulators. These are first/single stage, two/dual-stage, and automatic dual tank regulators.. First or Single Stage Regulators - Single-stage regulators are the most basic and least expensive. They attach to a single propane tank securely and drop the initial pressure of the propane from 100+ psi down to a much safer operating pressure of 10-15 psi.. They attach to a single tank and require you to manually move the regulator when a tank is exhausted. Many also have a manual pressure knob that allows you to adjust the end pressure.. Two or Dual Stage Regulators - Dual-stage regulators have the same initial stage of single-stage regulators plus another one that further controls and manages the pressure. It drops it down to a consistent pressure of 1 psi.. Thats perfect for operating your RVs appliances at peak efficiency.. The only downside to dual-stage regulators is that you still have to manually switch them from tank to tank when one is ...

Background: Reuterin produced from glycerol by Lactobacillus reuteri, a normal inhabitant of the human intestine, is a broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent. It has been postulated that reuterin could play a role in the probiotic effects of Lb. reuteri. Reuterin is active toward enteropathogens, yeasts, fungi, protozoa and viruses, but its effect on commensal intestinal bacteria is unknown. Moreover reuterins mode of action has not yet been elucidated. Glutathione, a powerful antioxidant, which also plays a key role in detoxifying reactive aldehydes, protects certain bacteria from oxidative stress, and could also be implicated in resistance to reuterin. The aim of this work was to test the activity of reuterin against a representative panel of intestinal bacteria and to study a possible correlation between intracellular low molecular weight thiols (LMW-SH) such as glutathione, hydrogen peroxide and/or reuterin sensitivity. Reuterin was produced by Lb. reuteri SD2112 in pure glycerol solution, purified and

The composites of biodegradable poly(propylene carbonate) (PPC) reinforced with short Hildegardia populifolia natural fiber were prepared by melt mixing followed by compression molding. The mechanical properties, thermal properties, and morphologies of the composites were studied via static and dynamic mechanical measurements, thermogravimetric analysis, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques, respectively. Static tensile tests showed that the stiffness and tensile strength of the composites increased with an increasing fiber content. However, the elongation at break and the energy to break decreased dramatically with the addition of short fiber. The relationship between the experimental results and the compatibility or interaction between the PPC matrix and fiber was correlated. SEM observations indicated good interfacial contact between the short fiber and PPC matrix. Thermogravimetric analysis revealed that the introduction of short Hildegardia populifolia fiber led to a slightly ...

These brass orifices are a replacement for appliances that use male threaded orifices. They can be drilled to size to convert to natural gas or propane. Size is rated at 7mm, but actual size at the threads is 5.92 mm (standard equivalent of 0.233 inch or nearly 1/4 inch), so measure your orifices carefully before ordering. Many cooktops, free standing stoves, bar-b-ques, and rangetops use these types of orifices and they will retrofit a number of other units which usually feature a sealed burner design. This set includes 6 orifices for a stove with up to 6 burners. Many cooktops, rangetops and free standing stoves usually come with a dual gas regulator that can be converted between natural gas and propane. Other manual adjustments might be necessary, so check your factory instruction manual details. No other hardware parts should be required to complete the conversion if your unit uses a dual gas regulator. These orifices come with a #72 pilot hole, so they must be bored to suit your ...

In this study, Cr and Co promoted, as well as unpromoted vanadium phosphate (VPO) catalysts were synthesized by the reaction of V2O5 and o-H3PO4 in organic medium followed by calcination in n-butane/air environment at 673 K. The physico-chemical properties and the catalytic behavior were affected by the addition of Cr and Co dopants. H2-TPR was used to investigate the nature of oxidants in the unpromoted and promoted catalysts. The results showed that both the Cr and Co promoters remarkably lowered the temperature of the reduction peak associated with V5+. The amount of oxygen species originated from the active phase, V4+, removed was significantly increased for Co and Cr-promoted catalysts. Both Cr and Co dopants improve strongly the n-butane conversion without sacrificing the MA selectivity. A good correlation was observed between the amount of oxygen species removed from V4+ phase and the activity for n-butane oxidation to maleic anhydride. This suggested that V4+-O was the center for the ...
We investigated the efficacy of fuel stratification in a pre-mixture of di-methyl ether (DME) and n-Butane, which have different auto-ignition characteristics, for reducing the pressure rise rate (PRR) of homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) engines. A new chemical reaction model was created by mixing DME and n-Butane and compared to existing chemical reaction models to verify the effects. The rate of maximum pressure rise depends on mixture ratio. When DME was charged with stratification and n-butane was charged with homogeneity, the maximum PRR was the lowest. The calculations were performed using the SENKIN application of CHEMKIN-II.. Copyright © 2011 by KSME ...

Liquefied petroleum gas or liquid petroleum gas (LPG or LP gas), also referred to as simply propane or butane, are flammable mixtures of hydrocarbon gases used as fuel in heating appliances, cooking equipment, and vehicles. It is increasingly used as an aerosol propellant and a refrigerant, replacing chlorofluorocarbons in an effort to reduce damage to the ozone layer. When specifically used as a vehicle fuel it is often referred to as autogas. Varieties of LPG bought and sold include mixes that are mostly propane (C 3H 8), mostly butane (C 4H 10) and, most commonly, mixes including both propane and butane. In the northern hemisphere winter, the mixes contain more propane, while in summer, they contain more butane. In the United States, mainly two grades of LPG are sold: commercial propane and HD-5. These specifications are published by the Gas Processors Association (GPA) and the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM). Propane/butane blends are also listed in these specifications. ...
Pt/Al2O3and Pt-Sn/Al2O3catalysts, coked during propane dehydrogenation, have been studied using temperature-programmed oxidation (TPO). Time on stream, temperature, and reaction gas composition have been varied. Three different peaks were identified from the TPO profiles on the Pt-Sn catalyst and attributed to different types of coke; coke on and in the vicinity of the metal, coke on the carrier, and graphitic coke on the carrier. The amounts of these types were related to reaction conditions. The formation of the coke belonging to the first two peaks in the TPO profiles increases with temperature and partial pressure of propene. Hydrogen, on the other hand, suppresses the formation. The amount of coke that can be attributed to the third peak increases with temperature and propane partial pressure. A model is discussed where a minor part of the coke deactivates the catalyst. This coke is formed in parallel with the coke that is seen in the first two peaks in the TPO experiments. The graphitic coke

The η2 complex of nickel bis(diphenylphosphanyl)propane with fullerene, {Ni(dppp)(η2-C60)}·(C6H14)0.84·(C6H4Cl2)0.16 (1) (C6H14: hexane, C6H4Cl2: o-dichlorobenzene), has been obtained by reduction of the Ni(dppp)Cl2 and C60 mixture with sodium fluorenone in o-dichlorobenzene and slow precipitation of the single crystals by diffusion of hexane. Nickel coordinates to the 6-6 bond of C60 by η2-coordination to form Ni-C(C60) bonds with a length of 1.948-1.951(2) Å, which are the shortest M-C bonds among known η2 complexes of fullerenes. The 6-6 bond length [1.488(3) Å] where the Ni atom is coordinated is noticeably longer than the average length of other 6-6 bonds in C60 [1.388(2) Å]. Coordination of nickel to C60 results in the splitting of two bands for two IR-active modes of C60 into three bands, because of the lower symmetry of C60, and a noticeable shift in the F1u(4) mode of C60 to lower frequencies, as a result of π back-donation. The dark green complex manifests two absorption ...

Fifteen states and Washington, D.C., have proposed full electrification of medium- and heavy-duty trucks by 2050 with a target of 30 percent zero-emission vehicle sales by 2030. The rationale behind the proposals is based on the dubious assumption that the electrical grid will be fully decarbonized by that time. Likewise, policy based on exhaust carbon dioxide (CO2eq) emissions alone as opposed to life-cycle analysis results misses the full picture. As a result, policy proposals today conflate the promise of electrification with actual decarbonization. The comparative analysis also reveals that MD-HD vehicles powered by renewable propane provide a lower carbon footprint solution in every U.S. state except Vermont where electricity is generated by, and imported from, Canadian hydroelectric power plants. Renewable propane is derived from sources such as beef fats, vegetable oils, grease residue, and other biomass feedstocks.. Moreover, the analysis shows that decarbonization can be accelerated ...
article{cf22e409-6a34-4b4b-ba61-8b1498d91334, abstract = {Pure Sb0.9V0.9O4 and various preparations with excess of either vanadia or antimony oxide, including mechanical mixtures, have been investigated for propane ammoxidation to acrylonitrile. The catalysts were characterized before and after use in catalysis by various methods, including electron microscopy, infrared spectroscopy and XPS. The catalytic data show that preparations with approximate to SbVO4 and alpha-Sb2O4, compared with the single phases, are more selective to acrylonitrile formation on the condition that the excess antimony oxide is present while synthesising the approximate to SbVO, phase. Considering the catalytic data together with the results from the characterisations, various possibilities are discussed to explain the role of excess alpha-Sb2O4 in propane ammoxidation. Possibilities that can be excluded on rational grounds are catalysis on two phases, or, at grain boundaries, an influence on the morphology of ...

On April 9, 1998, 20 fire fighters from a volunteer fire department responded to a propane tank fire located at a turkey farm about 2.5 miles from the fire department. Upon arrival at the fire scene a decision was made to water down the buildings adjacent to the propane tank and allow the tank to burn itself out since the tank was venting. Some of the fire fighters positioned themselves between th

Downloadable (with restrictions)! This study examines the impact of oil price uncertainty on the US industrial production by decomposing oil price volatility into permanent and transitory components. The decompositions provide important evidence on sources and asymmetric effects of oil price volatility. To estimate the component structure of volatility and to analyse the dynamic impacts of the volatility components, the study uses a threshold based CGARCH and VAR modelling over a period from 1980 to 2010 for the US economy. The CGARCH model estimates show significant asymmetric effect of oil price shock on the transitory oil price volatility. Dynamic impulse response functions obtained from the estimated VAR models reveal that there is a significant and prolonged dampening impact of increased transitory oil price volatility on industrial production. The results also suggest that shocks to transitory component induce increased volatility in the general price level and non-fuel commodity prices in the US.

Appearing almost molten under the flames, these specially formulated tempered fire gems have been tumbled to remove all edges, making them smoother than standard fire glass. Deep Amber Fire Gems are featured in this set and includes enough to fill the burner pan. Designed to run on Propane, the main burner of the G45 emits generous undulating flames enhanced by a conspicuously effective front ember burner. See-Thru burner design allows the fire to be enjoyed from either side of the fireplace. The vented G45 burner provides hour after hour of hypnotic glimmering flames. Lit with a push button ignitor, the manual safety pilot is simple to operate. The manual safety pilot will automatically close the valve when the flow of gas to the burner is disrupted or the pilot light is extinguished.
In this study, the dehydrogenation component of Ga2O3 was introduced into ZSM-5 nanocrystals to prepare Ga2O3/ZSM-5 hollow fiber-based bifunctional catalysts. The physicochemical features of as-prepared catalysts were characterized by means of XRD, BET, SEM, STEM, NH3-TPD, etc., and their performances for the catalytic conversion of n-butane to produce light olefins and aromatics were investigated. The results indicated that a very small amount of gallium can cause a marked enhancement in the catalytic activity of ZSM-5 because of the synergistic effect of the dehydrogenation and aromatization properties of Ga2O3 and the cracking function of ZSM-5. Compared with Ga2O3/ZSM-5 nanoparticles, the unique hierarchical macro-meso-microporosity of the as-prepared hollow fibers can effectively enlarge the bifunctionality by enhancing the accessibility of active sites and the diffusion. Consequently, Ga2O3/ZSM-5 hollow fibers show excellent catalytic conversion of n-butane, with the highest yield of light olefins

The chemisorption of propane and n-pentane on Raney platinum in the presence of varying amounts of pre-adsorbed water was studied at 100C by a combined gravimetric and mass spectrometric technique. It was found that the amount of saturated hydrocarbon chemisorbed is independent of the amount of pre-adsorbed water. If water is present on the surface, a portion of it is displaced upon chemisorption of hydrocarbons. At high coverages of the surface with pre-adsorbed water the amount of displaced water is constant. The ratio of displaced water molecules to chemisorbed propane molecules is about 1 with propane and 0.6 with n-pentane. If oxygen is chemisorbed on the catalyst surface before water and/or hydrocarbon is admitted, propane chemisorption is strongly enhanced. At a coverage of 1 oxygen atom for every 2 platinum surface atoms, the subsequent propane chemisorption is increased by a factor of about 2.5. Moreover, if on top of the oxygen layer water is adsorbed, the ratio of displaced water

Two recently reported bacterial strains that are able to reductively dehalogenate polychlorinated aliphatic alkanes, including 1,2,3-trichloropropane, 1,2-dichloropropane, 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane, 1,1,2-trichloroethane and 1,2-dichloroethane, were further characterized to clarify their taxonomic position. The two strains, designated BL-DC-8 and BL-DC-9T, were mesophilic, non-spore-forming, non-motile, Gram-negative staining and strictly anaerobic. Cells were irregular cocci, 0.3-0.6 μm in diameter. The two strains were resistant to ampicillin and vancomycin. Hydrogen was utilized as an electron donor. The genomic DNA G+C content of strains BL-DC-8 and BL-DC-9T was 54.0 and 53.8 mol%, respectively. The major cellular fatty acids were C18 : 1 ω9c, C16 : 1 ω9c, C16 : 0 and C14 : 0. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that the strains cluster within the phylum Chloroflexi, but are related only distantly to all recognized taxa in the phylum.
