The Eagles Nest :: Stevensville, Michigan :: An Empirical Investigation Into the Effect of Beta Frequency Binaural-beat Audio Signals on Four Measures of Human Memory
In the drive theory, basic human life force or energy is believed to transit from some type of inside or center out toward the world and other people. When the drives are working well, a person can succeed in a social, sexual and work sense. Drives move the person toward objects, which can be people or things. A competing emphasis, called object relations, is that those objects that happen to be people have a role in eliciting and shaping drives in other people, and that the availability of good objects cannot be taken for granted. Object relations emphasizes the appropriateness of the engaging other to help a person heal. It is posited that the original failure of a good enough other was the hampering event in emotional development, and that in psychotherapy with adults, the therapist must be an exquisitely good enough object to allow the real self of the client to be freed.. The drive of course has always been a very common intuitive idea about human functioning. Freud formalized it as an ...

Background: More than 35 million people in developing countries are living with HIV infection. An enormous global effort is now underway to bring antiretroviral treatment to at least 3 million of those infected. While drug prices have dropped considerably, the cost and technical complexity of laboratory tests essential for the management of HIV disease, such as CD4 cell counts, remain prohibitive. New, simple, and affordable methods for measuring CD4 cells that can be implemented in resource-scarce settings are urgently needed. Methods and Findings: Here we describe the development of a prototype for a simple, rapid, and affordable method for counting CD4 lymphocytes. Microliter volumes of blood without further sample preparation are stained with fluorescent antibodies, captured on a membrane within a miniaturized flow cell and imaged through microscope optics with the type of charge-coupled device developed for digital camera technology. An associated computer algorithm converts the raw digital ...

This paper seeks to identify the impact of the level of development on the return to export expansion, while controlling for capital and labor in a neoclassical rendering of an economy. The paper utilizes a switching regression estimation procedure to determine the level of development that best divides middle from high income countries as regards growth associated with export expansion. Such a division may be used, among other things, to provide an objective criterion for graduation from GSP (Generalized System of Preferences) treatment. The results suggest that the current GSP graduation level may be too high.

Action potentials in cardiac myocytes have durations in the order of magnitude of 100 milliseconds. In biomedical investigations the documentation of the occurrence of action potentials is often not sufficient, but a recording of the shape of an action potential allows a functional estimation of several molecular players. Therefore a temporal resolution of around 500 images per second is compulsory. In the past such measurements have been performed with photometric approaches limiting the measurement to one cell at a time. In contrast, imaging allows reading out several cells at a time with additional spatial information. Recent developments in camera technologies allow the acquisition with the required speed and sensitivity. We performed action potential imaging on isolated adult cardiomyocytes of guinea pigs utilizing the fluorescent membrane potential sensor di-8-ANEPPS and latest electron-multiplication CCD as well as scientific CMOS cameras of several manufacturers. Furthermore, we ...

He is also mistaken about the role of mathematics and logic in empirical science. Mathematics is itself open to empirical investigation by scientists, and scientists only use mathematics and logic as tools of their investigations because empirical investigation shows them to be helpful. If mathematics didnt work to describe nature, we wouldnt use it. Consider the discovery by mathematicians of non-Euclidean geometry. With this mathematical discovery, the geometry of space became a subject for empirical, physical investigation. Kant believed that the fact that space was Euclidean was an a priori (and obvious) fact. Gauss tried to measure the sum of the angles of a great triangle from Alpine mountaintops, and today we know that the geometry of space, really space-time, is non-Euclidean. The same is even true in the case of logic, as quantum mechanics has led to the discovery that logics law of the excluded middle is inadequate to describe nature.. ReplyDelete ...
The project computed expected crime reducing benefits that were conditional on treatment modality as well as arrestee attributes and risk of drug dependence or abuse. Moreover, the principal investigators obtained estimates of crime reducing benefits for all crimes as well as select sub-types. More specifically, in order to create the dataset, the principal investigators defined a detailed exhaustive set of client attributes (based on availability across the three data sources) as a base data set. The attributes that defined the synthetic database included all characteristics available for all the databases used in this study. A synthetic dataset of 40,320 client profiles with the attributes and categories that include age, race, gender, current offense, criminal history, drug treatment history, history of violence, current criminal justice status, co-occurring alcohol problem, and geographic location was created. The base synthetic dataset was a cross combination of all of these attributes. ...
This study investigates the impact of two organizational antecedents, (1) SixSigma resources (technical) and (2) team psychological safety (social), on learning behaviour and knowledgecreation and, in turn, on the success of SixSigma process improvement projects. The paper proposes an integrated model to explain process improvement implementation success through two learning activities undertaken by SixSigmaproject teams: Knowing-what and Knowing-how. The conceptualization of these knowledge types in this research is different from usual conceptualization as it represents the knowledge brought into projects through various phases of SixSigmaprojects. The three hypotheses proposed in the model were tested using the data collected from 52 SixSigmaproject teams from a single organization. Regression analysis showed psychological safety affects project performance through knowing-how. Regression and bootstrapping analyses showed resources influence project performance through the combined mediation ...
Downloadable! This paper examines the impact of labor market institutions (LMI) on business cycle (BC) synchronization. The authors first develop a two-country right-to-manage model of wage bargaining. They find that, following a symmetric demand change, cross-country differences in LMI generate divergent responses in employment and output. They then investigate the empirical relevance of this result using panel data of 20 OECD countries observed over 40 years. Their estimation strategy controls for a large set of possible factors influencing GDP correlations, which allows to confront their results with those found in previous studies. Consistently with their theoretical results, they find that similar labor markets tend to favor more synchronized cycles. In particular, disparity in tax wedges yields lower GDP comovement. Besides, interactions between labor market institutions do matter, as they are found to affect the effect of tax wedge divergence on BC synchronization. Their overall results suggest

As the development of smart biped robots has been thriving, research and development of personal robots with unique personalities will become an important issue in the next decade. For instance, we might want to have robots capable of affording us pleasure by chatting, singing or joking with us in our homes. Most of these functions are realized by verbal communications. However, motion of a whole body, namely non-verbal communication, also plays an important role. We can get information concerning the personality of a subject when we observe his or her body motion. ...

To get an agreement you have to ask them personally. When sending out an email or a document you will miss the non-verbal communication. A stand-up meeting might be a good tool to check if they fully understand and agree. When we agreed about the definition and meaning of these labels they continue thinking about test cases based on their experience with the system and processes. And they classified their test cases as such.. Using these labels helped me to check the purpose of their test cases and translate it for me to those techniques I know about and see whether we could extend their test cases. In this case the step 4 is executed by me using my test knowledge.. Now the real testing begins. (step 5) The testers can execute their test scripts. They communicate verbally (instead of spoken words, written words) with the system. They also communicate non-verbally. Its not uncommon for people to think that once they have a significant other that there is no more work to be done. Thats so far from the truth. Now that "you" are a "we" you have to learn what that means. You have to learn what your "signif" needs, and thats a process in itself.. Remember the fundamentals: Attraction begets Interest begets Like begets Intense Like. If you dont, theyre are clearly defined in the book, "The Business of Dating.". In a nutshell, we move through these four phases by way of intimacy. Spatial intimacy, emotional intimacy, and spiritual intimacy, to be exact. (Note that physical intimacy was not included.) How do we create intimacy? By sharing time and space; by verbal and non-verbal communication; by being reactive and proactive…you get the idea.. And all of these things-while making perfect sense to us-can create closeness, openness, and the need to run away from you very fast in our significant other. This is why we have to work on our relationships, and ...

Many health care organizations have no processes in place to prompt discussions with patients and families about health care directives or end-of-life wishes, or to record, access, and follow the instructions when the time comes. In 2012, IHI and a group of end-of-life experts and concerned health care organizations launched the "Conversation Ready" initiative. Together, this group committed to establishing what it means for a health care organization to be "Conversation Ready," by developing and piloting processes to create systems that reframe patient-provider relationships around the question, "What matters most to you?," and, in some instances, break the silence between patient and provider. ...
