Downloadable (with restrictions)! We conduct a two-stage (DEA and regression) analysis of the efficiency of New Zealand secondary schools. Unlike previous applications of two-stage semi-parametric modelling of the school Òproduction processÓ, we use Simar and WilsonÕs double bootstrap procedure, which permits valid inference in the presence of unknown serial correlation in the efficiency scores. We are therefore able to draw robust conclusions about a system that has undergone extensive reforms with respect to ideas high on the educational agenda such as decentralised school management and parental choice. Most importantly, we find that school type affects school efficiency and so too does teacher quality.

models provide useful information about the impact of location, traffic, facility and operations in the motor fuel volume of a petrol station. On the other hand DEA identifies the best performers in terms of specific criteria chosen. The network analysis explores the effects of closing a station or aggregating two stations into one, in the other stations located in the same city. The main findings are that manned hours, effective positions, brand preference have a positive relationship with volume (in Milan). In Amsterdam shop sales is the most significant variable. Moreover two type of sites Hypermarket followed by service area have very good motor fuel sales in both cities. The effect of closing a station is the redistribution of ...

Generally, a typical problem which is crucial in a manufacturing system is increasing the production rate. To cope with the problem, different types of techniques are used in companies by trial and error which imposes high costs on them. Using simulation as a tool for assessing the effect of alterations on the performance of the overall system might be significant. This paper considers a simulation based data envelopment analysis goal programming (DEAGP) applied into a well-known automobile spare part manufacturer in Kurdistan to improve production rate. The objective is to develop a simulation model based on real system to identify the imbalances and improve the performance of production system. For this purpose, in 2013 data are collected from existing system and applying full factorial design of experiments technique, different scenarios have been considered then to find the best one we used data envelopment analysis goal programming technique as a method for measuring the relative efficiency of

Computational protein structure prediction has made great progress in the last three decades [1, 2]. Protein inter-residue contact prediction is one of the problems being actively studied in the structure prediction community. Recent CASP (Critical Assessment of Techniques for Protein Structure Prediction) [3-7] events have demonstrated that a few true contacts, extracted from template-based models, can provide very important information for protein structure refinement, especially on targets without good templates in PDB [8]. For example, Misura et al. [9] have revised the widely-used ab initio folding program, Rosetta [10], by incorporating inter-residue contact information as a component of Rosettas energy function, and shown that the revised Rosetta exhibits not only a better computational efficiency, but also a better prediction accuracy. For some test proteins, the models built by this revised Rosetta are more accurate than their template-based counterparts, which is rarely seen before ...

Downloadable! The literature of productive efficiency analysis is divided into two main branches: the parametric Stochastic Frontier Analysis (SFA) and nonparametric Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). This paper attempts to combine the virtues of both approaches in a unified framework. We follow the SFA literature and introduce a stochastic component decomposed into idiosyncratic error and technical inefficiency components imposing the standard SFA assumptions. In contrast to the SFA, we do not make any prior assumptions about the functional form of the deterministic production function. In this respect, we follow the nonparametric route of DEA that only imposes free disposability, convexity, and some specification of returns to scale. From the postulated class of production functions, the proposed method identifies the production function with the best empirical fit to the data. The resulting function will always take a piece-wise linear form analogous to the DEA frontiers. We discuss the practical

Background: Negotiating intersections is one of the principal concerns for older drivers as it requires precision and efficiency in visual-motor coordination (VMC). The complex intersection manoeuvre places high demands on visual perception, attention, motor control and executive functioning. Understanding the relationship between VMC and cognitive abilities in older drivers is important, but yet to be systematically explored.. Methods: We recorded 38 older adults driving manoeuvre at intersections using eye tracking and advanced surveying positioning technologies. VCM performance of the participants were indexed using multiple parameters of visual and motor behaviors with a Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) model. Participants also performed a battery of cognitive tests of visual attention, spatial abilities, visual-motor speed and executive functions.. Results: Significant correlations were identified between VMC performance and eight cognitive measurements: UFOV 2 and 3, Block Design, Bentons ...

- The purpose of this paper is to investigate the issue of efficiency in the Brazilian motor carrier industry, which has undergone significant transformations since the economy deregulation in the mid-1990s. The main research objective is to determine whether or not different types of cargoes and geographic regions serviced significantly impact trucking managerial efficiency levels. , - Research objectives are accomplished by applying a two-stage data envelopment analysis model with bootstrapped estimates. Based on an unbalanced panel model, secondary data from the annual study published by Transporte Moderno (years 2002-2010) were collected and analyzed. , - Results support anecdotal evidence regarding a heterogeneous impact of cargo mix and route mix on efficiency levels. , - A major limitation of this work concerns the fact of working with secondary data instead of primary data, especially with respect to the set of inputs and outputs used in the analysis, which may not cover all aspects relevant to

This paper combines the use of (binary) logistic regression and stochastic frontier analysis to assess the operational effectiveness of the UK Coastguard (Maritime Rescue) coordination centres over the period 1995-1998. In particular, the rationale for the Governments decision - confirmed in 1999 - to close a number of coordination centres is scrutinized. We conclude that the regression models developed in this paper represent a performance measurement framework that is considerably more realistic and complex than the one apparently used by the UK Government. Furthermore, we have found that the coordination centres selected for closure were not necessarily the ones that were least effective in their primary purpose - that is, to save lives. In a related paper, we demonstrate how the regression models developed here can be used to inform the application of data envelopment analysis to this case.. ...

Background: As a result of teaching recurrence relations in various courses over the years, I am working on a paper on periodic integer sequences generated by second-order, linear, homogeneous recurrences with constant coefficients.. Briefly, if the recurrence generates a sequence of integers, must the coefficients be integers?. More precisely: Consider the recurrence defined by $G_{n+2} = r G_{n+1} + s G_n$, with $G_0$ and $G_1$ given integers. Suppose no lower-order recurrence generates $G$, and further, that $G$ is a sequence of integers. Must $r$ and $s$ be integers?. (1) The condition about lower-order is required. It is not hard to come up with 0th- or 1st-order examples which can also be generated by second-order recurrences with non-integer coefficients.. (2) It is not hard to see that $s$ must be an integer. A simple induction proof shows that for all $n\ge0$, $G_n G_{n+2} - G_{n+1}^2=(-s)^n(G_0 G_2 - G_1^2)$, from which is follows easily that $s$ is an integer.. (3) It seems that it ...

This work develops a generalized modeling framework using several techniques for assessing the feasibility of an eco-industrial network or eco-park in order to demonstrate the environmental and economic benefits of industrial facilities with cooperative goals to conserve energy and materials. The work takes advantage of three distinct types of modeling techniques (linear programming, mixed-integer linear programming and mixed-integer non-linear programming) to incorporate increasingly complex circumstances for designing eco-industrial networks. The purpose of this research is to provide policy-makers and facility designers with an approach to optimize construction of facilities based upon economic and environmental incentives. This framework allows for optimizing the material and energy efficiency of a network of facilities to reduce emissions, waste, and input of materials and energy while maintaining production levels. Major contributions from this thesis are to examine the potential for ...

One of the essential components of a branch-and-bound based mixed-integer linear programming (MIP) solver is the branching rule. Strong branching is a method used by many state-of-the-art branching rules to select the variable to branch on. It precomputes the dual bounds of potential child nodes by solving auxiliary linear programs (LPs) and thereby helps to take good branching decisions that lead to a small search tree. In this paper, we describe how these dual bound predictions can be improved by including domain propagation into strong branching. Domain propagation is a technique usually used at every node of the branch-and-bound tree to tighten the local domains of variables. Computational experiments on standard MIP instances indicate that our improved strong branching method significantly improves the quality of the predictions and causes almost no additional effort. For a full strong branching rule, we are able to obtain substantial reductions of the branch-and-bound tree size as well as ...

Development of an efficient and effective home health care (HHC) service system is a quite recent and challenging task for the HHC firms. This paper aims to develop an HHC service system in the perspective of long-term economic sustainability as well as operational efficiency. A more flexible mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model is formulated by incorporating the dynamic arrival and departure of patients along with the selection of new patients and nursing staff. An integrated model is proposed that jointly addresses: (i) patient selection; (ii) nurse hiring; (iii) nurse to patient assignment; and (iv) scheduling and routing decisions in a daily HHC planning problem. The proposed model extends the HHC problem from conventional scheduling and routing issues to demand and capacity management aspects. It enables an HHC firm to solve the daily scheduling and routing problem considering existing patients and nursing staff in combination with the simultaneous selection of new patients and nurses, and

The approach allows more beams to be used over the course of therapy while limiting the number of beams required in any one session. In the proposed field rotation method, several sets of beams are interchanged throughout the treatment to allow a wider selection of beam angles than would be possible with fixed beam orientations. The choice of beamlet intensities and the number of identical fractions for each set are determined by a mixed integer linear program that controls jointly for the distribution per fraction and the cumulative dose distribution delivered to targets and critical ...

as the type for a negative number, the resulting varint is always ten bytes long - it is, effectively, treated like a very large unsigned integer. If you use one of the signed types, the resulting varint uses ZigZag encoding, which is much more efficient. ZigZag encoding maps signed integers to unsigned integers so that numbers with a small absolute value (for instance, -1) have a small varint encoded value too. It does this in a way that "zig-zags" back and forth through the positive and negative integers, so that -1 is encoded as 1, 1 is encoded as 2, -2 is encoded as 3, and so on, as you can see in the following table ...

The main focus in this thesis is on the aspects related to the implementation of integer and non-integer sampling rate conversion (SRC). SRC is used in many communication and signal processing applications where two signals or systems having different sampling rates need to be interconnected. There are two basic approaches to deal with this problem. The first is to convert the signal to analog and then re-sample it at the desired rate. In the second approach, digital signal processing techniques are utilized to compute values of the new samples from the existing ones. The former approach is hardly used since the latter one introduces less noise and distortion. However, the implementation complexity for the second approach varies for different types of conversion factors. In this work, the second approach for SRC is considered and its implementation details are explored. The conversion factor in general can be an integer, a ratio of two integers, or an irrational number. The SRC by an irrational ...
