At the heart of this interprofessional module is the belief that all health care students should not only share the same core values and skills that underpin their professional practice, but they should also have learning opportunities that enable them to learn with, and about, each other. This module is intended to provide a foundation on which the different programmes leading to professional registration can be built. The module seeks to contextualise health and social care by exploring its origins, philosophy and priorities - including the promotion of good health as well as the management of ill-health. Health and social care has had a continued focus on client-centred practice for some years but, nonetheless, has experienced concerns about the extent to which service users may not always have been treated with dignity and respect. Professional practices tend to grow during the owners 30s and early 40s, they coast during the professionals remaining 40s and 50s and decline during the professionals 60s and beyond. This happens to dentists, lawyers, accountants and almost all other professionals. The reasons for this are simple. When you first start your career, you work hard to make your practice grow, when you start to achieve good success you work a little less hard in order to enjoy that success. Ultimately, working less hard catches up with you and your practice starts to decline, and in some cases the professional finds themselves out of gas with a declining practice - not good. The objective is to sell your practice when you are relatively close to the top and certainly before you are out of gas with a declining practice. If you are over 60 you are moving toward the slope and should seriously consider selling sooner rather than later ...

The impetus for undertaking this study emerged from my professional practice of 'making things happen' in the evolving digital culture of Amsterdam between 1988 and 2003. As will become clear later, I draw upon a great number of my own experiences and perceptions in trying to understand more about the design of presence. Therefore, my work as a designer and producer of concepts has had a significant influence on the work conducted here. The manner in which I have embedded my own experiences will be addressed in the next section. Here, I want to sketch briefly how the question "How to design presence in environments in which technology plays a crucial role?" has been informed by my 15 years of 'making things happen'.
