The concept and meaning of medical professionalism is changing towards a new professionalism. Medical Professionalism is a set of values, enacted through behaviours and relationships, which underpin the publics trust in doctors.1 New professionalism refers to the subtle but important evolution in the values and responsibilities that relate to being a good doctor.2 This evolution has been influenced by changing expectations in the doctor-patient relationship, increasing requirements for doctors to demonstrate ongoing clinical competence and the drive to improve quality and patient safety.3 Patients trust in doctors is influenced by: effective communication; respect for autonomy and shared decision-making; maintaining confidentiality; honesty, openness and transparency; raising concerns about patient safety and maintaining competence and assuring the quality of medical practice.4 A recent survey of the Irish public revealed that approximately 8 out of 10 were very confident or fairly ...

December 12, 2012 -- How should medical professionalism be taught to radiology residents? Small group discussions are effective, according to a study presented at the RSNA 2012 annual meeting that focused on teaching the principles of professionalism.. Originally published in 2002, the Physician Charter on Medical Professionalism mandates three important principles about patient care: the primacy of patient welfare, patient autonomy, and social justice (Annals of Internal Medicine, February 5, 2002, Vol. 136:3, pp. 243-246), explained Dr. Ethan Halpern in his RSNA presentation. In his experience, talking about the charter in small groups of residents is a better way to approach the subject than measuring and grading professionalism formally.. The charter is poorly understood despite its formal adoption in many medical specialties -- including radiology through the RSNA, said Halpern, who is a professor of radiology at Thomas Jefferson University. But its principles can be taught in ways that ...
Abstract The topic of developing professionalism dominated the content of many academic medicine publications and conference agendas during the past decade. Calls to address the development of professionalism among medical students and residents have come from professional societies, accrediting agencies, and a host of educators in the biomedical sciences. The language of the professionalism movement is now a given among those in academic medicine. We raise serious concerns about the professionalism discourse and how the specialized language of academic medicine disciplines has defined, organized, contained, and made seemingly immutable a group of attitudes, values, and behaviors subsumed under the label of "professionalism." In particular, we argue that the professionalism discourse needs to pay more attention to the academic environment in which students are educated, that it should articulate specific positive behaviors, that the theory of professionalism must be constructed from a dialogue ...

Mortality statistics remain the least ambiguous measure of significant illness, certainly beyond youth and early middle age. Therefore, when testing the validity of any supposed predictor of health, its association with mortality will be an acid test and many of the recent reports on the relationship between socio-economic status and health have used mortality data [1-17]. These late 20th century studies confirm what had been detected in the 19th century [18] - that poor socio-economic circumstances are associated with reduced life span. But our understanding of the mechanisms involved remains defective, perhaps because there is no way of relating the many different, and often proxy, measures of socio-economic status: social standing lacks the definitude of death. Researchers have used occupational role [19], levels of educational attainment [12], ad hoc combinations of occupation, home and car ownership [20], refined indices such as that of Carstairs [21] or of Townsend [1], and so-called ...

I chose the topic of self-concept through interpersonal communication because I had an interest in it. This interest is because I didnt understand that ones self-concept affected the way one is perceived by others. I learned self-concept through class discussions, but I wanted a better understanding of how communication affects ones self-concept and how it affects ones perception Ones self-concept affects ones perception, attitude and behavior, which can be demonstrated during the process of interpersonal communication. Aspects of ones life influence their self-concept, which not only affect how people perceive them but how they perceive themselves. Such things are gender, motivational level and psychological type. It is widely known that in order to communicate with others one must first understand oneself. This is self-concept, and affects the way one communicates. In the process of communication, self-knowledge and the way one feel about oneself is revealed to others, and affects how ...
The longstanding commitment to enhancing professionalism by the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society (AΩA) and the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation is remarkable. Their recent commitment to highlighting the need to focus on remediation strategies to address lapses in professional behavior is farsighted and welcome in the educational community. Many tools have been developed to assess professional behavior, but as was pointed out in the 2011 AΩA Think Tank on lapses in professionalism,1 assessment has limited value unless it leads to improvement. What is known about remediation for lapses of professional behavior in medical students? Hauer et al. reviewed the published outcome data on remediation efforts in a 2009 paper in Academic Medicine.2 She and her colleagues found that many of the published studies lacked the robust scientific outcomes that learners and medical educators deserve. The conclusion from the Hauer paper was that there was an urgent need from multi-institutional outcomes-based ...

Anyone who is a member of one of 27 professional science bodies that are based in the United Kingdom and licensed by the Science Council can gain CSci accreditation, provided they can demonstrate the level of professional competence and seniority established by the constituent professional body, typically a masters degree with 4 years of work experience. They must also demonstrate a prior commitment to continuing professional development (CPD), and to keep the CSci certification they must meet Science Council-stipulated CPD requirements every year.. To me, the most valuable aspect of becoming a CSci is the structure it provides for CPD. A major component of each program is a "block" experience that contains a minimum of five weeks of classroom experience integrated with education methods courses.. The School of Education is responsible for maintaining the professional competence of students. If the teacher candidate is judged to be unable to discharge the responsibilities entailed in a clinical experience laboratory, the student may be dropped from the course or program. Purpose The purpose of this paper is to report on the validation of a management competency assessment tool for health services managers (HSM), which resulted from the development and validation of the framework, addressed by a previous paper. Design/methodology/approach The management competency assessment tool (MCAP Tool) was validated using assessment data from a sample of 117 senior and middle managers working in two public hospitals and five community services in Victoria, Australia. The assessments were conducted between January 2013 and September 2014. Findings Both validity and reliability of the MCAP Tool were demonstrated. Practical implications The MCAP Tool has the potential to assist in the measurement of the competencies of HSM. Further research is required to determine if the framework and tool are applicable to HSM in other settings. Originality/value This is the first published study outlining the validity and reliability of an assessment tool to measure the management ...

The promotion of volunteer workers is an indispensable part of the human resources policy of self-help organizations and requires specific concepts. Using the example of the rheumatism league Baden-Württemberg -an organization with 65,000 members, 3,000 volunteers and 10 fulltime employees- there will be shown best- practice examples.. A successful concept covers the areas of recruitment, training, support and integration.. The support of volunteers should include four key areas:. 1. Transfer of knowledge and professional competences. 2. Individual support for personal development. 3. Promotion of teamwork and social skills. 4. Framework conditions (insurance cover, reimbursement of expenses). The implementation of these requirements should be carried out by specifically trained volunteer managers on the basis of a strong and motivating personal relationship.. This strategy can be seen as a precondition for establishing a long-term relationship of the volunteer with the association, a ...

Dr. Marie Heaton takes great pride and pleasure in guiding her patients into the land of Nod so they can have their gallbladder out, their knee replaced or their baby delivered without pain and often even without awareness. She loves her job until the unbearable happens --- an eight-year-old girl under her care dies in surgery, despite all her best efforts. The crisis leads her to question not only her professional competence but also her personal relationships. And yet, even as she carefully documents each methodical step she took and each drug she administered, she is haunted by inconsistencies.. This first-person narrative works on many levels --- as a mystery, as an exposé of the sometimes brutal juncture of the medical and legal professions, as a family drama, and as a romance of sorts. Marie has never found time for a husband. I never meant to dam myself off from those. I just knew they would require careful scheduling. In the aftermath of the childs death she feels more alone than ...

One of our central goals at the University of Alberta, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, is to help both students and faculty understand and embrace the values of medical professionalism, and continue to develop and refine their own sense of professional identity. Our sense of professionalism, or professional identity, is perpetually evolving; awareness of the factors that contribute to it will help guide its development.. It is the lack of professional conduct, not inadequate knowledge or technical skills, that leads to most complaints against health professionals. Unfortunately, the terms we use to explain professionalism are often abstract and, therefore, hard to characterize; altruism, integrity, compassion, and respect are concepts that may be difficult to measure in practice. We need to make the recognition of professionalism overt and tangible such that we may improve care for patients and satisfaction for health professionals.. This website was created to help you understand that ...

The CSA Annual Meeting and Clinical Anesthesia Update, held May 31-June 3, was a success with an outstanding educational program and over 275 attendees. The CSA House of Delegates took action on several important issues, including approval of Guidelines for Deep Sedation by Non-Anesthesiologists; a resolution that expresses the CSAs philosophical opposition to Pay for Performance as a means to improve quality and patient safety for anesthesia services and calling on the CSA to work to minimize the negative effects of P4P, and work with other entities to develop alternatives to P4P that support medical professionalism. In another resolution, the CSA Committee on Physician Health and Well Being is charged to research and develop strategies of benefit to individual anesthesiologists for the recognition and management of personal emotional distress that can impair attention to, and safe care of, patients.. ...
A discussion panel in the afternoon brought together six different points of view (from an advocate of private services, orthopedist Nicolas Duval, to the president of the Conseil pour la protection des malades, Paul G. Brunet) that nevertheless converged on the fact that any change to the Québec health care system had to be for the benefit of patients.. QMA Board Chairman Dr. Jean-Bernard Trudeau concluded this day of information sharing and reflection by reminding everyone that, for the Association, although the public health care system was not perfect, it had to remain the primary player in the health care sector and that the private sector had to be limited to a complementary role. "As for dual medical practising, this had to be analysed through the prism of medical professionalism. Further reflection was necessary by studying it as a tool in a basket of initiatives to improve medical practising and the health of the population. It was necessary to be prudent. The impacts, such as cost, ...

The research methodology was a quantitative approach, based on descriptive research, with a clinical competence development model to guide the data collection procedure. The target population of the study included a sample of 250 learners in the four-year B.Cur programme, that extended from first-to-fourth-year. Stratified random sampling was applied to select the sample learners for this research and data were collected by means of a five-point Likert scale questionnaire. Data were organised and managed using the SAS statistical software package. Descriptive statistics were gathered with measures of central tendency and dispersion included, and their findings were illustrated on descriptive tables. According to the organizations 2012 Form 990, Dr. Lavisso-Mourey pulls in a cool $918,519 in salary and benefits as its President and CEO. Not a bad day job. But why was she authoring an article on medical professionalism? Shouldnt she have recused herself when not actually practicing medicine? This course is designed specifically to improve students ability to compose effective persuasive prose. We will rely primarily upon exemplars of public address in a variety of modes, from corporate advocacy and political campaigning to artful ceremonial display. These exemplars will be supplemented with theoretical and conceptual material intended to foster a critical appreciation of these exemplars. Students will be asked to emulate these exemplars, not to copy them but to mine them as living repositories of rhetorical strategy. These exemplars, then, form part of a catalog of possibilities from which students might begin to fashion their own voices as persuasive rhetors. The class will not function as a lecture, but rather as a workshop and discussion group. Reasoned critique, as a skill complementary to skillful composition, will be developed as we read and evaluate each others work throughout the semester. Assignments will include seven 750-word papers, with at least one opportunity to ...
