Female-oriented cigarette packaging is becoming increasingly common and has been identified as an important market driver, particularly with respect to convincing women in low-income and middle-income countries to smoke.25 The results of the current study demonstrate that female-oriented packs have considerable appeal among young women. For example, the highest-rated female pack, Capri Cherry, was rated more appealing than other brands by almost 67% of participants. In addition, removing descriptors and colours from packs reduced the appeal of brands: for example, the appeal of Capri Cherry fell from 67% to 17% among women who viewed plain packs without the word Cherry. Plain packs were also associated with significantly fewer positive characteristics than fully branded packs, including glamour, being slim, popular, attractive and sophisticated. These findings are consistent with previous research demonstrating that plain packages are less attractive and engaging than fully branded packs, ...
Drawing upon social information process theory, this study examines the extent to which social media engagement and eWOM activities (namely opinion seeking, passing, giving) in a higher education context shape the perceived brand image of higher education institutions and, subsequently, their enrollment intention. The study also takes into consideration the moderating effect of prospective groups (undergraduate vs. graduate students) in these relationships. Findings from a sample of 444 prospective students in Vietnam indicate that social media engagement has an indirect effect on perceived brand image through eWOM seeking and passing activities, ultimately impacting enrollment intentions. Further, perceived brand image of undergraduate prospect is influenced more strongly by their eWOM seeking activities on social media, whereas for graduate prospects, future enrollment intentions is determined more strongly by the perception of brand image ...

Only indirect evidence of plain packagings effectiveness was available until its release in Australia. On 24 May 2011, Cancer Council Australia released a review of the evidence supporting the introduction of plain packaging to reduce youth uptake.[10] The review had been conducted by Quit Victoria and Cancer Council Victoria. The review includes 24 peer-reviewed studies conducted over two decades, suggesting that packaging plays an important role in encouraging young people to try cigarettes.[11] First impressions in Australia indicated that smokers feel that cigarettes taste worse in plain packaging - an unexpected side effect.[12][13] In addition, evidence from quantitative studies, qualitative research and the internal documents of the tobacco industry consistently identify packaging as an important part of tobacco promotion. Smoking among Australian teenagers (12-17 year old and 18-19 year old) decreased between 2013 and 2016 from 3.4% to 1.5% and from 10.8% to 4.6% respectively.[14] There ...

Tobacco control policies to date have encompassed various elements including cessation assistance, taxation, restrictions on tobacco advertising and removal of point of sale displays, tobacco packaging regulations and designation of non-smoking areas.1 Most tobacco control policies have considerable public support across varying countries and among both smokers and non-smokers.2-12 As the evidence base relating to the harms associated with secondhand smoke grows and tobacco consumption becomes increasingly de-normalised in many countries, some governments are stepping up their efforts to further discourage smoking at a population level.13 14 Two areas of possible tobacco control policy extension include plain packaging of cigarettes and smoking bans in outdoor locations.1 2 14. In line with work demonstrating that the visual characteristics of cigarette packages convey important information to consumers and influence their perceptions of the healthiness and desirability of the product,15 recent ...
September 26, 2014. France plans to mandate plain packaging of cigarettes as part of an effort to reduce one of the highest rates of smoking among major European countries.. Plain packaging will be enforced as part of a law to be presented in coming months, Health Minister Marisol Touraine said today at a Cabinet meeting. The ministry doesnt have a timetable yet for putting the plan into effect.. France is joining the U.K. and Ireland in moving toward banning distinctive and alluring tobacco packaging. With 31 percent of adults smoking daily, France has the third-highest rate of smoking in Western Europe behind Greece and Austria, according to the World Health Organization. That compares with 14 percent in the U.K. and 24 percent in Germany, the WHO says.. "There is no miracle cure for tobacco addiction," Touraine said today. "Neutral packaging is one measure among others to efficiently fight the industrys marketing.". The law will allow for the cigarette brand names to be stated on the ...

Philip Morris Asia (PMA) is keen to get to the core of its dispute with the Australian government over the issue of standardized tobacco packaging.. In a note posted on its website, the company reported that the tribunal assigned to hear PMAs challenge to Australias plain packaging law yesterday decided to divide the proceedings in the case into two phases-one to decide certain questions related to jurisdiction and a second to hear the arguments at the core of the case.. "Australias plain packaging law entails the destruction of brands," said Philip Morris Internationals vice president, communications, Julie Soderlund, in commenting on the tribunals decision.. "It is evident that brands are core to consumers understanding of the intrinsic characteristics of a product and of their ability to differentiate. Brands drive the creativity and innovation that propel economies. Building a brand is a long-term, significant investment that international law protects from arbitrary government action ...

Plain packaging of cigarettes will be mandatory from Friday after the high court in London rejected an attempt by the tobacco industry to prevent the change in the law.. Campaigners say other countries considering plain packaging - including Canada, Hungary, Norway and Slovenia - will be encouraged by the defeat of the industry.. "This landmark judgment is a crushing defeat for the tobacco industry and fully justifies the governments determination to go ahead with the introduction of standardised packaging," said Deborah Arnott, chief executive of the charity Ash (Action on Smoking and Health).. "Millions of pounds have been spent on some of the countrys most expensive lawyers in the hope of blocking the policy. This disgraceful effort to privilege tobacco business interests over public health has rightly failed utterly.". Plain packs will not be in shops immediately, because the companies have been allowed to sell off existing stocks first, but within a few months it is expected that the ...

Overall, we found evidence that smokers were more likely to show short-term increases in quitting intentions, and to engage in quitting behaviours after implementation of the packaging changes. After adjusting for important covariates and baseline levels of each outcome variable, compared to the pre-PP period, we found greater increases in rates of smokers stopping themselves from smoking when they had an urge to smoke and higher quit attempt rates in the early transition period, and greater intentions to quit in the next month and greater avoidance of GHWs through covering or concealing their pack during the late transition phase. Also, we observed higher levels of pack concealment, more stubbing out of cigarettes prematurely, and higher quit attempt rates in the first full year of the new packaging.. Given the observed reductions in pack appeal and greater GHW effectiveness in cross-sectional surveys by Dunlop et al15 and Wakefield et al,16 and the ability of these appeal and GHW effectiveness ...
Not surprisingly, the tobacco industry has reacted vehemently to plain packaging legislation, arguing that it will lead them to cut prices. From an economic standpoint, it is hard to see why this should occur. Price wars are generally a reaction to a temporary change in market conditions (such as the entry of a highly-leveraged competitor) - not to long-run changes in the market environment. The industry has also claimed that plain packaging will boost the illegal market, a strange claim given that many black market cigarettes are already sold in plain packages ...

Internationally, Australia is a leader in tobacco control policies that reduce community exposure to tobacco-related harm. In December 2012, Australia became the first country in the world to enact legislation mandating plain packaging for all tobacco products.1 The Tobacco Plain Packaging Act 2011 (Cwlth) is designed to prevent tobacco industry promotion by simultaneously reducing pack attractiveness and increasing the size of graphic health warnings. The legislation required manufacturers to produce plain packs with new warnings from 1 October 2012. From 1 December 2012, plain packaging became compulsory for all tobacco products. The new plain packs are olive green and devoid of brand design. Telephone numbers for the national smoking cessation helpline, Quitline, feature prominently on the packs.. Plain packaging legislation exists to encourage smokers to quit and discourage the uptake of smoking.1 Quitline is a free resource that can be used by smokers who are motivated and seeking support ...

In addition, a new set of 14 health warnings and images have been rolled out, enlarged to cover at least 75% of the front of the packet.. Its a long-overdue move which has been discussed for over 30 years, Action on Smoking and Health (Ash) programme manager Boyd Broughton said.. Its not the be-all and end-all - a lot of other strategies have to be put in place in order to get to smoke-free 2025 - but we can achieve that goal.. Old-style packets of cigarettes will still be seen for a few weeks yet: retailers have a six-week grace period for old stock to be distributed and a further six weeks for that stock to be sold.. From June 6, tobacco can be sold only in the new standardised packets.. Mr Broughton said the change came at the halfway point of the timeframe for a smoke-free New Zealand - smoking rates of less than 5% - to be achieved.. Plain packaging is one part of a whole suite of strategies recommended to stop young people being addicted to cigarettes, Mr Broughton ...
A security sleeve for merchandise storage containers includes a frame that defines a storage compartment. Properly formulated cosmetic compositions can stimulate the receptors to produce very positive pleasant effects. One of the oldest stimulants is 1menthol; it imparts a cooling sensation to the skin. Menthol and related terpenes do not really cool through the effect of latent cold. Actually they heighten the perception of cold in the nerve endings in the skin, so that the surface of skin "feels cold". ; John Joseph (Mocksville, NC) Assignee(s): R. J. Shares in tobacco firms have suffered a knock after news that a law introducing plain cigarette packaging in England could come into force before May. As Hayley Platt reports it ends years of debate and lobbying over the issue.}
As with other surveys of this kind, it is clear that the teenagers questioned are no fools. They understand why people of their age smoke better than the campaigners, and they know it is not because of the colour schemes on the packs. If asked whether they think the plain packs look worse than existing packs, they say that they do. Anyone would. The question that campaigners have never come close to answering is whether making the packs look worse will put people off smoking. The experience with graphic warnings suggests that it wont-because it hasnt-and there are plenty of clues in the surveys themselves to confirm this ...

As part of the new EU action plan for a circular economy published in December 2015, the EUs Waste Framework legislation will be revised, with special attention given to roots of environmental pollution and hazardous waste, such as packaging and plastics. Setting ambitious standards is of utmost importance to improve product and product packaging sustainability requirements, especially for home and industrial composting, and ultimately for recycling.. Enabling the biodegradability of plastics is also essential considering its substantial proportion in the total amount of waste generated (approximately 10%), its low recovery rate (approximately 5%) and the disproportionate amount of time needed for plastics to degrade into the environment.. ECOS will work to set clear and ambitious sustainability requirements for product and product packaging, good waste composting and recycling practices, and to improve conditions for plastics biodegradability..
