Intervention studies for depression and intimate partner violence (IPV) commonly incorporate screening to identify eligible participants. The challenge is that current ethical evaluation is largely informed by the four principle approach applying principles of beneficence, non-maleficence, and respect for justice and autonomy. We examine three intervention studies for IPV, postnatal depression (PND) and depression that used screening from the perspective of principlism, followed by the perspective of a narrative and relational approach. We suggest that a narrative and relational approach to ethics brings to light concerns that principlism can overlook. The justification most commonly used to incorporate screening is that the potential benefits of identifying intervention efficacy balance the risk of individual harm. However, considerable risks do exist. The discovery of new information may result in further depression or worries, people might feel burdened, open to further risk, unsure of whether to

Subject: Re: Physics of Chilly Magnus Chord Organs From: James W. Beauchamp ,jwb(at)TIMBRE.MUSIC.UIUC.EDU, Date: Tue, 5 Jan 1999 08:48:23 -0600 Expanding on Jonts explanation, the frequency of vibration is strictly proportional to the speed of sound and inversely proportional to the pipes effective length (f = c/(2*Leff)). The speed of sound depends on the properties of the gas contained in the pipe and the temperature of the gas: c = const*sqrt(T(kelvin)) = const*sqrt(273+T(celsius)) For dry air, const = 20.1, so at 20 degrees celsius c = 20.1*sqrt(273 + 20) = 344 m/s A useful approximation good for a range of temperatures around zero degrees C is c = 331.3 + 0.6*T(celsius) If the pipe were cold, at say 50 degrees F (10 degrees C), the frequency would be 337.3, according to this formula. (338.1 using the more accurate sqrt formula) When warmed to a room temperature of 20 degrees C we are back to 344 m/s. So this is an increase of about 1.8% or about 3 tenths of a semi-tone (which is approx. ...

It is well known among spectroscopists that two modifications of hydrogen exist: para-H$_2$ and ortho-H$_2$. Pure para-H$_2$ can be produced by leading `normal H$_2$, a 1:3 para:ortho mixture, over an iron-containing catalyst at low temperature, and can be kept for a long time also at higher temperature in specially prepared gas cylinders. It is perhaps less well known that para-ortho H$_2$ conversion is also accelerated by interactions with paramagnetic molecules, such as O$_2$. An important application of para-H$_2$ is in NMR spectroscopy and its imaging variant, MRI. By adding para-H$_2$ to the sample the sensitivity of NMR can be increased by four orders of magnitude through a phenomenon called para-hydrogen induced polarization (PHIP). The para-ortho H$_2$ conversion by O$_2$ was recently measured in view of this application.[1] Two mechanisms have been suggested for the para-ortho H$_2$ conversion by collisions with O$_2$. The first one, proposed in 1933 by Eugene Wigner,[2] is the ...
Contemporary clinical ethics was founded on principlism, and the four principles: respect for autonomy, nonmaleficence, beneficence and justice, remain dominant in medical ethics discourse and practice. These principles are held to be expansive enough to provide the basis for the ethical practice of medicine across cultures. Although principlism remains subject to critique and revision, the four-principle model continues to be taught and applied across the world. As the practice of medicine globalizes, it remains critical to examine the extent to which both the four-principle framework, and individual principles among the four, suffice patients and practitioners in different social and cultural contexts. Using the four-principle model we analyze two accounts of surrogate decision making - one from the developed and one from the developing world - in which the clinician undertakes medical decision-making with apparently little input from the patient and/or family. The purpose of this analysis is ...

Are your improvement efforts yielding short-term gains? Has your journey been all about the tools? In this learning session, participants will explore two architectural methods for improvement: 1. Tool-based architecture, and 2. Principle-based architecture. Both are necessary in the evolution of culture. Few organizations build on what they have previously learned - that tools alone are not enough, that people need to understand the WHY behind the HOW, or the principle-based architecture behind a lean transformation.. You will discover the key concepts behind The Shingo Model TM, which has guided lean transformations in many industries for more than 25 years and is now being applied in healthcare. During this one-day program, participants will learn from other healthcare organizations that are making this transition. Learn practical method and a framework to accelerate to world-class organization performance and operational excellence through the appropriate application of lean ...

Dr Beauchamp believes breastfeeding mothers can prime their childrens taste buds to be familiar with fruit and vegetables by eating them themselves. In contrast formula milk is bland and constant tasting, he said. We have demonstrated that there is a very sensitive period between two and five months of age when infants will learn to like these milk formulas, he said. This learned preference for formula milk will last at least into adolescence and we believe for their entire lives. By exposing infants at this very sensitive period is appears to be possible to make them like something that they would otherwise deem to be horrible. If we could enhance consumption of vegetables amongst pregnant and nursing women, it ought to impact on their childrens later food choices and result in healthier eating. We have yet to do this work, but we would like to run a large-scale trial to see if this would be the case. Dr Beauchamp presented his findings at the American Association for the ...

|p style=text-indent:20px;|The present article investigates a continuous-time mean-variance portfolio selection problem with regime-switching under the constraint of no-shorting. The literature along this line is essentially dominated by the Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) equation approach. However, in the presence of switching regimes, a system of HJB equations rather than a single equation need to be tackled concurrently, which might not be solvable in terms of classical solutions, or even not in the weaker viscosity sense as well. Instead, we first introduce a general result on the sign of geometric Brownian motion with jumps, then derive the efficient portfolio and frontier via the maximum principle approach; in particular, we observe, under a mild technical assumption on the initial conditions, that the no-shorting constraint will consistently be satisfied over the whole finite time horizon. Further numerical illustrations will be provided.|/p|

But people dont make decisions by consulting a slab of mental commandments and tabulating the dilemmas they create when they intersect! We make decisions based on what is the good we see and the habits we have. I could go on a long rant about principlism, but now is not the time; in fact, now is the time to study for Fridays test. But principlism as an explanation for human behavior fails. The truth is, we act according to the goods and habits described by virtue ethics (Aristotle was right ...

A quantitative comparison of the graphic novel method and the traditional written case study is analyzed. The literature on ethics, graphic novels, and training are brought together from theories of narrative and literature perspective to formulate a study. The study uses a 2 × 2 repeated-measure MANOVA to analyze the participants reaction to bribery situations (...) based on varying levels of grayness. The overall study finds that ethical efficacy increases with the use of the graphic novel method. The greatest improvements are in the individuals level of self-efficacy and understanding of principle-based ethical issues. In addition, the participants level of industry experience may play a factor in applying the graphic novel technique. Finally, guidelines on how to effectively utilize the graphic novel method are stated. Improving ethical efficacy through ...

Yes. Preliminary injunctions (PIs) are normally granted inter partes. Ex parte PIs are possible but as far as patent matters are concerned, they are granted only in cases of exceptional urgency. PIs are granted subject to (i) a prima facie case of validity and infringement and (ii) the risk of an irreparable harm for the patentee in the absence of an injunction. Since our judges do not have a technical background, assessing prima facie validity and infringement will normally require the appointment of a Court Appointed Expert to provide a non-binding opinion untangling the technicalities of the case and providing an opinion to the court (see point 12 above). As opposed to ordinary proceedings, the CAEs assessment in PI proceedings is necessarily condensed in time given the urgent nature of the proceedings. As regards irreparable harm, the patentee must prove that without a PI it will suffer an irreparable harm, namely a harm that would be impossible to restore by means of mere economic ...

To begin with, I would admit the existence of common objective moral principles in all of mankind, in all cultures, and throughout all time. I openly admit that those moral principles have not been kept by any human being, culture, or society. But all human beings, cultures, and societies are aware of the requirements of objective moral principles. Ironically, Christopher Hitchens seemed to indicate that he believed in the existence of such an objective moral standard. The problem for him is that the existence of that moral standard is one of the strongest evidences for the existence of God. And not just any god, but rather the specific God found in classic Christian theology. Atheists attempt to argue that natural conditions of the world result in the evolution of identical moral principles everywhere. This makes little or no sense. In the animal world, we see highly diverse and numerous ways of dealing with environmental needs which have evidently evolved or been designed to appear in ...

The occasion for this reflection is a recent paper by Hugh Desmond. It makes a rather interesting distinction between economic and ethical approaches to the social epistemology of science. The economic approach, we are told, has scientists modeled as credit-maximizing agents responding to incentives such as promotion, funding, or publication criteria. Whereas those who take the ethical approach understand scientists as agents concerned with ideals such as honesty, respect, or reliability, and are capable of acting contrary to incentive structures. Desmond seeks to show that while the economic approach might apparently leave the ethical approach with little to do, in fact there are sociologically and epistemically important aspects of science that can only be explained on the ethical approach. (To find out more go read his paper!). Both authors of this post are social epistemologists of science, interested in the same sort of issues as Desmond. One of us (Heesen) is even a major focus of ...

CPAs are professionals that are required to make ethical decisions daily when performing their duties. Ethics are moral principles or values that tend to be unique to each individual and are used to shape decisions. Ethical standards are based on ethical principles. All CPAs are required to apply ethical principles to their practice and to the services that provide. This course identifies why it is crucial for all CPAs to practice ethics and to solve ethical dilemmas that they encounter. Part one of this course will identify the need for ethics in the CPA profession and the ethical principles that all CPAs are required to comply with when performing their duties. This course will review ethics rules, regulations, and entities that provide ethics enforcement for CPAs. Part 2 of this course will review the principles of the AICPAs Code of Professional Conduct. It will identify when independence is considered to be impaired and define discreditable acts.. ...

In response to this there then tends to emerge a concern with thinking about how to relate formal universal principles to maxims that specifically are such as to be action-guiding. The result of that inquiry tends to be that there is a felt need for something like what Richard Hare once described as rules of thumb. These rules are meant to play some kind of role (as happens in versions of rule-utilitarianism) that gives us a safeguard way of protecting the principles of common sense morality whilst admitting a base of reference to universal principles when trouble arises. This kind of solution produces dissatisfaction of a different sort if the rules in question are not thought specific enough and from there we can easily move to invocation of Ross prima facie duties. The problem, however, with that mode of reconciliation between Ross and Kant is precisely the difficulty that Ross prima facie duties are not, strictly considered, really duties at all (as demonstrated in previous ...
As shown in Figure 1, the key Smart R&D decision phases fall into five key areas: portfolio creation, portfolio management, core capability strategy, partner strategy and innovation balance. None of these concepts are new; the essence of Smart R&D is the use of these concepts in a concerted sequence on the path to market to drive principle-based decisions. I also include a decision to invest in Smart Lab technology - modeling, simulation and high throughput technology - in this set as it is a key approach to reducing the capacity imbalance.. It all begins where business strategy meets R&D strategy in portfolio creation and management (PCM). Poor PCM choices lead to many of the ills that can befall commercial R&D. This is where project creep happens and R&D organisations find themselves stretched beyond their capability and capacity to develop significant innovation. Creation must focus on value and risk/return balance but many issues come in disciplined choices of what not to work on and in ...

Extrapolation methods are reliable, objective, inexpensive, quick, and easily automated. As a result, they are widely used, especially for inventory and production forecasts, for operational planning for up to two years ahead, and for long-term forecasts in some situations, such as population forecasting. This paper provides principles for selecting and preparing data, making seasonal adjustments, extrapolating, assessing uncertainty, and identifying when to use extrapolation. The principles are based on received wisdom (i.e., experts commonly held opinions) and on empirical studies. Some of the more important principles are:• In selecting and preparing data, use all relevant data and adjust the data for important events that occurred in the past.• Make seasonal adjustments only when seasonal effects are expected and only if there is good evidence by which to measure them.• In extrapolating, use simple functional forms. Weight the most recent data heavily if there are small measurement errors,

Autonomys radical expression exerts a harmful effect on modern culture not just by its supposed power to liberate us from our perceived shackles, but also by its power to deprive persons of their rights and liberties. They chose instead to grow a network of teams. Radical is defined as: …thoroughgoing or extreme, especially as regards ...

The idea was proposed by one of our senior officers and I immediately jumped at the opportunity to help organize it. I made a shortlived effort to start up an Ethics club last year; I realized that I didnt have the time and energy to commit myself to another club since Im already an officer for MSMP and the Family Medicine Interest Group (FMIG). We put together a Problem-based learning case on ethics. I found this great case about Andrea, a locked-in patient from an article in the Discover Magazines Vital Signs column. Andrea Beauchamp helped the students talk through such difficult topics as advanced directives, access to medicine, universal health care, and physician assisted suicide ...
ACGIH®, AIHA, AIH, AND ABIH REVISE THE CURRENT JOINTLY SHARED CODE OF ETHICS. Cincinnati, Ohio May 24, 2007 After careful consideration, much deliberation, and solid legal advice, the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH) decided to develop a new, enforceable Code of Ethics for all ABIH-certified professionals, applicants, and examinees. ACGIH®, the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA), and AIHAs Academy of Industrial Hygiene (AIH) have created a set of principles that will complement the enforceable Code of Ethics for ACGIH®, AIHA, and AIH, which they will share. Though the Member Ethical Principles document was developed in cooperation with ABIH and is based on the same concepts as its newly approved and enforceable Code of Ethics available at http://www.abih.org/members/documents.html#ethicscode, the joint principles are not enforceable; rather, the document represents shared Member Ethical Principles. These principles were available for member input and were recently ...

I am getting quite a bit of flack in the Blogosphere for my post last week pointing out, in the context of the controversy over the Janice Brown nomination to the D.C. Circuit, that its not at all clear why the Lochner decision and its progenywere so terrible that saying some nice things about these decisions should disqualify Justice Brown, or anyone else, from a seat on the DC Circuit. What all of the criticism that has come my way has in common is (1) that the authors dont really know anything about Lochner (which at least Atrios admits), in particular claiming that Lochner prohibited regulation of child labor, which is simply not true. The Lochner era Court unanimously upheld state regulation (prohibition) of child labor (Sturges & Burn Mfg. Co. v. Beauchamp, 231 U.S. 320 (1913), as did lower courts at the time (Ex Parte Weber, 149 Cal. 392 (1906); United Steel Co. v. Yedinak, 87 N.E. 229 (Ind. 1909); Bryan v. Skillman Hardware Co., 76 N.J. 45 (1908); People v. Taylor, 192 N.Y. 398 (1908); ...

March 1, 2001) - The North American Securities Administrators Association supports congressional efforts to provide the staff of the Securities and Exchange Commission with much-needed pay parity with their counterparts at the federal banking agencies, said Marc Beauchamp, NASAA`s executive director. State securities regulators understand the difficulties the SEC faces in recruiting and retaining a professional workforce; state regulators face the same challenges. Dedicated and well-trained staff are essential to protecting investors and maintaining market integrity. As technology and globalization continue to change our markets, the SEC must have the staffing resources to meet the regulatory challenges.. As for SEC fees, NASAA wants to ensure a formula that eliminates the possibility of a funding shortfall should there be a dramatic reduction in securities transactions in the future. The SEC must receive full funding to continue to carry out its essential investor protection mission. Strong, ...

Hastings Beauchamp Morley sauntered across Union Square with a pitying look at the hundreds that lolled upon the park benches. They were a motley lot, he thought; the men with stolid, animal, unshaven faces; the women wriggling and self-conscious, twining and untwining their feet that hung four inches above the gravelled walks.. Were I Mr. Carnegie or Mr. Rockefeller I would put a few millions in my inside pocket and make an appointment with all the Park Commissioners (around the corner, if necessary), and arrange for benches in all the parks of the world low enough for women to sit upon, and rest their feet upon the ground. After that I might furnish libraries to towns that would pay for em, or build sanitariums for crank professors, and call em colleges, if I wanted to.. Womens rights societies have been laboring for many years after equality with man. With what result? When they sit on a bench they must twist their ankles together and uncomfortably swing their highest French heels clear of ...
