Primula veris (cowslip, common cowslip, cowslip primrose; syn. Primula officinalis Hill) is a herbaceous perennial flowering plant in the primrose family Primulaceae. The species is native throughout most of temperate Europe and western Asia, and although absent from more northerly areas including much of northwest Scotland, it reappears in northernmost Sutherland and Orkney and in Scandinavia. This species frequently hybridizes with other Primulas such as Primula vulgaris to form false oxlip (Primula × polyantha) which is often confused with true oxlip (Primula elatior), a much rarer plant. The common name cowslip may derive from the old English for cow dung, probably because the plant was often found growing amongst the manure in cow pastures. An alternative derivation simply refers to slippery or boggy ground; again, a typical habitat for this plant. The species name veris (of spring) is the genitive case form of Latin ver (spring). However, primrose P. vulgaris, flowers earlier, from ...

Valentine termed the phenomenon of post-fertilization failure in interspecific crosses seed incompatibility. On the basis of the results obtained from crossing them, he allotted different genetic values to the genomes of three species of Primula. The genetic ratio R (ratio of genomes of endosparm and maternal tissue) was calculated for each cross. When R is greater than the normal 1.5, so-called type B seeds, large and often empty, are produced. When R is less than 1.5, type A seeds, small and often well-filled, are formed. The present study is a detailed histological investigation of seed development of some crosses in the genus Primula. type A seeds have been shown to have overdeveloped inner integuments but relatively normal endosperms; type B seeds have thin integuments and poor endosperms. In every case the condition of the embryo apparently depends on that of the endosperm. In the cross between diploid P.Veris and its autotetraploid, the 4n x 2n mating (R = 1,25) produces ...

This rosette-forming evergreen or semi-evergreen perennial has egg-shaped to oblong, leathery, serrated leaves, to 4 inches long. Primroses like
Although the effects of deterministic factors on population viability often are more important than stochasticity, few researchers have dealt with the effect of deterministic habitat changes on plant population demography. We assessed population viability for the perennial herb Primula veris L. and identified targets for management based on demographic data from five different habitat types representing different degrees of canopy closure. We conducted replicate studies at the border of the distribution area and in more central parts. Demographic patterns were similar between the two regions. Most study populations had a positive population growth, and only populations in late phases of forest succession showed consistently negative trends. The populations of open habitats had high seedling recruitment, and the populations of early and middle forest succession had high seed production. The importance of survival for population growth rate increased with increasing habitat closure, whereas the importance
In this thesis, I combine molecular analyses, common-garden and field experiments to examine how evolutionary and ecological processes influence patterns of genetic variation among and within populations of the declining, insect-pollinated, self-incompatible, perennial herb Primula farinosa. More specifically I examined 1) whether genetic diversity at neutral marker loci was related to habitat fragmentation and habitat stability, 2) whether floral display and flowering time were more strongly differentiated among populations than were putatively neutral marker loci, 3) whether adaptive population differentiation could be detected on a local spatial scale, and 4) whether floral display differentially affected male and female reproductive success.. Genetic diversity at neutral marker loci was lower within fragmented populations on the Swedish mainland than within the more densely occurring populations on the island Öland, SE Sweden. On Öland, fluctuations in population size were more pronounced ...

But skin symptoms of poisoning appear in sensitive patients even without coming in direst contact with the plant, mere nearness being sufficient, just like Poison ivy. Intermittency of symptoms; worse right side. Pain in liver and spleen. Deep infiltration and tension of tissues; blisters. Paralyzed sensation. Weakness. Pharyngeal soreness alternates with diminished facial irritation.. Face.--Moist eczema. Papular eruption on chin. Burns at night. Urticaria-like eruption. Eyelids swollen.. With over 350,000 described species, angiosperms currently represent the dominant, most diverse group of plants on earth [1]. Their success has been frequently linked with the evolution of a complex structure, the flower, which typically includes both male and female sexual organs - often inconspicuous - inside whorls of attractive, asexual organs. This evolutionary innovation opened up a new landscape of opportunities for elaborate interactions with animals, mostly insects, which can transfer male gametes (that is, pollen grains) between flowers of different plants more efficiently than abiotic vectors (for example, wind; [2,3]). Most flowers are hermaphroditic, theoretically enabling fertilization within the same individual (selfing), a breeding system that can lead to detrimental evolutionary consequences [4,5]. Different strategies have thus evolved in flowering plants to avoid selfing and promote outcrossing, and one of the most effective mechanisms is heterostyly.. Extensively investigated ...

A variety of complex adaptive traits are controlled by supergenes. These are tightly linked genetic loci that are inherited as a single unit, and are associated with the switch between different polymorphic features. Supergenes were first described for the heterostyly system of plants such as buckwheat and Primula species, in which they control the development of pin or thrum flower morphs. In these cases, different elements of the supergene control the different and developmentally separate features, such as stamen level or stigma height [1,2].. In addition to the heterostyly system in primroses, supergenes have been studied in a number of different polymorphisms including the Rhesus blood groups of humans and shell morphology in snails [3,4], but perhaps the best-known examples come from butterflies. Supergenes in the palatable Batesian mimics Papilio memnon and Papilio dardanus contain multiple loci that control different elements of the mimetic pattern on both the forewing and hindwing, ...
Speciation by hybridization is likely to be a signature of the Anthropocene. A new hybrid species of Rhagoletis fruitfly has colonized invasive honeysuckle in North America. A primrose species,Primula kewensis, arose by hybridization and continues to be propagated in Londons Kew Gardens. And five species (Spartina anglica and four Senecio species) that have arisen by hybridization between native and introduced species in Britain have become naturalized. Remarkably, the introduction of plants to Britain seems to have increased the global species list. These five (out of a flora of 2,711 naturalized and native species) suggest a speciation rate (0.00184 per original species in the past 150 years) similar to the extinction rate reported for mammals over the past 100 years. If sustained, with no subsequent extinctions, it would be sufficient to increase the number of plant species by 20% within 15,000 years ...

The Primula veris says: A friend of mine is rich and owns a mansion, so on my day abroad, I stayed in his house to see how the other half live. I got into the plush bed and put on silk PAJAMAS, which frankly didnt fit very well because I am a flower. I sipped a glass of wine, inhaling deeply to take in the BOUQUET, and then had difficulty drinking it because, again, I am a flower. Having never had a very complete education, Ive been reading a text on ALGEBRA, but it was getting late, so I stopped solving for x, used a BOOKMARK to save my place, and closed my eyes to get some sleep. Just then, there was a crash. Robbers had broken in! They came into the room and demanded all of my friends money! I tried to explain that I had SWITCHED places with him, but they didnt believe me (my friend looks like a flower too, so I can see how from their VIEWPOINT, theyd think I was lying). I was ordered to open a sealed LOCKBOX next to the bed, but I didnt have the key. I offered them the single FARTHING ...

Obviously Darwin was not on the right wavelength to be able to use inheritance data from crosses involving unit characters. Why not? The material was there and the problem of inheritance was patently unsolved and important. Much has been written, and with justice, of Mendels extraordinary preadaptation to solving the problem he so precisely set himself: his mathematical bent, and his education in biology, physics, statistics and probability theory [7] that was far superior to anything Darwin could have got in a British university. Even if Darwin had decided to press on with his Antirrhinum or Primula studies he perhaps would not have seen through the stochasticity of the experimental results to the whole numbers that were waiting to be discovered. The explanation, though, for why Darwin turned away from the inheritance of unit characters as a possible route to resolving the general inheritance problem was simply that he did not believe that such characters had anything to do with the kind of ...

We all naturally love our own country, and rejoice over the animals, birds, flowers, and trees among which we have been brought up. There is much here in Yezo to remind us of them, and this fact is one source of interest and happiness to us. Many of the trees and shrubs, for example, are like those at home. Among them we recognize our old friend the oak; also the chestnut (both horse and Spanish), the walnut, fir, larch, elm, magnolia, poplar, birch, yew, guelder rose, lime, and even the mistletoe, with many others. Then there is the lespediza and scrub oak, grape vine, and also the hydrangea and many climbing plants besides. Then, too, we have the wild violet, dandelion, primula, gentian, monkshood, ox-eye daisy, lily of the valley, bracken, maidenhair fern, mosses, crows-foot, wild convolvulus, jack-in-the-pulpit, plantain, chickweed, groundsel, and other such-like plants. Nor should we forget the fruit. In some places we find the wild cherry, strawberry, raspberry, [54/55] gooseberry, and ...

Some species can be very reluctant to set seed. Stellata mirifica and Minutifolia, in particular, set very little seed for me. Even using the Mexican form of Minutifolia, which is observed to be more seed fertile than the Californian form, results in few hips carried to maturity. The hybrids I have raised from Minutifolia have all been from using its pollen on moderns. Puzzlement, my presumed hybrid between Stellata mirifica and Fedtschenkoana, does not set seed, but its pollen has worked on fertile triploids and are listed on HMF, as are many of the Minutifolia seedlings. Primula and Xanthina arent as easy to obtain mature hips from than all of the modern seed parents Ive put them on. The few which have held to maturity contained few seed, while the moderns resulting from their pollen have produced numerous seeds. Could some of them actually be selfs? Absolutely, but shouldnt your chances of raising actual hybrids increase with increased numbers of seed? Banksiae sets few seed from any ...

Darwins early work on heterostyly and related style polymorphisms (the presence of two or three style morphs within a population) generated much interest to understand how precise interactions between ecological and genetic mechanisms influence the evolution of floral diversity. Here we tested three key hypotheses proposed to explain the evolution of heterostyly: (i) the presence of self-incompatibility; (ii) the role of pollinators in promoting dissasortative mating; and (iii) floral architecture, which restricts pollinators movements and ensures more exact pollen deposition on their bodies. We combined data from experiments, field observations, and published studies to test whether evolution of style polymorphism in Narcissus is driven by the incompatibility system, pollinator guilds, or floral architecture, within a phylogenetic framework. Neither differences in pollinator environment nor the presence of genetic self-incompatibility were correlated with presence of style polymorphism. ...
How does climate change affect seed and pollen dispersal, an essential process for plant reproduction? To gain an in-depth understanding, Dr. Céline Born traveled to Marion Island in the sub-Antarctic Indian Ocean to study Azorella selago, a keystone plant species due to its critical importance to ecosystem function. Using the genotyped specimens found on the island, she is studying the impact of wind patterns on pollen dispersal of Azorella. Our research will be used for the development of a conservation plan for the sub-Antarctic region, which is particularly affected by climate change, she explained. This data will be used to predict colonization of the plant based on various global warming scenarios.. Many proteins form small droplets that separate out of the cells cytoplasm, just like oil de-mixes from water. Since their discovery, these liquid-like protein droplets have been identified in myriad important biological phenomena ranging from embryonic development over neuro-degeneration to DNA regulation. For instance, the localization of protein droplets in a specific location during early development of a worm is believed to determine which cells will become the sexual organs of the adult worm. In another example, protein condensation into droplets under cell stress is associated with the growth of fibers related to neurodegeneration as seen in ALS (Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) disease. Observations have shown that the material properties of these protein condensates change with time. However, an appropriate measurement and description of the material properties and their evolution over time was missing so far. Researchers from the MPI of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics (MPI-CBG) and ...
Its sort of like a reservoir which will never replace my rectum but is better than nothing! I will still have to spend my life knowing where the toilet is and running for it.. He said in 50% of cases he can create the pouch, but even if he cant its not always necessary.........worst thing that would happen if I couldnt cope is Id go back for a permanent colostomy.. He also said there are a lot of risks (which I know) with the other organs and nerves to my bladder and sexual organs......lets not think about that eh? Oh but hes only ever nicked a ureter (your wee tube) once in his whole career. Then theres the risk of lung and breathing problems........not thinking about that either, not after poor old Dave (fellow sufferer, severe complications including lungs and a stroke - luckily making progress and after weeks and weeks may be coming home soon).. Also he said all my siblings DO need colonoscopies to check, despite Umpalumps doc saying she didnt (well I KNEW SHE DID) so that made us ...

Dear EarthTalk: Can you explain what hormone disrupting chemicals are, how they affect our health and what they have to do with environmental problems? -Tom Rose, Oakland, CA. Many of the human bodys process, including reproduction, mental processing and metabolism, are controlled and regulated by hormones, chemical messengers produced by the endocrine glands. In the embryo and fetus, hormones guide the development of the brain, the nervous and immune systems, the sexual organs, and the liver, blood and kidneys, among other organs and tissue.. Hormones work by attaching to receptors, molecules on cell surfaces that carry information into the cells, triggering certain actions. In recent years, scientists have found that certain man-made chemicals disrupt this process by blocking it altogether, throwing off the timing-or by actually mimicking natural hormones and binding with the cells themselves. Such chemicals have been dubbed hormone disruptors. Since the 1940s thousands of chemicals ...
All you need to know about penis length - Bee-Potent.com. The vast majority are concerned about the size of their sexual organ and wish to increase their volume to better satisfy their partner. So, there are many remedies or natural products that help to increase the size and thickness of the penis, and this is what we will talk about below.. I already want to tell you very clearly that if you are wondering how to enlarge your penis, studies have indicated that the average size of a penis is 6 inches, which, in fact, for the vast majority of women is already more than enough. The problem is, men always equate their organ size with potency and manhood, so even though theyre above average, theyre still looking for a way that they can increase even more.. BUT ANYWAY, HOW TO ENLARGE THE PENIS?. ...
You may recall learning about the facts of life, but do you remember being taught about your vulvovaginal anatomy? Most women dont and it certainly didnt help that body parts below the belly button were often referred to as down there. Many women dont realize that the vulva and vagina are actually separate organs composed of different tissue and that they exhibit different problems. The distinction between the vagina and vulva is comparable to that of the mouth and the lips. If you have chapped lips, you apply lip balm to the surface of your lips and not inside your mouth. The same applies to a vulvar disorder, i.e., you dont insert medicine into the vagina to treat a condition of the external tissue. On the other hand, if youre diagnosed with a vaginal disorder, such as a yeast or bacterial infection, you should insert medicine into the vagina.. The vulva is located on the outside of the body.. The vulva is the external part of the female genitalia. It protects a womans sexual organs, ...
The etymological origin of eunuch is found in the Greek word eunoûchos, which derived in the Latin eunūchus. An eunuch is a man who has undergone castration (that is, the removal of his sexual organs). The eunuch may have suffered partial or total castration. When both the testicles and the penis are ablated, emasculation is discussed.
