To assess the utility and frequency with which the initial emergency provider and/or the consulting medical toxicologist access the Prescription Drug Monitoring Program while evaluating patients presenting for emergency care after prescription opioid misuse resulting in medical toxicology consultation. Prescription opioid misuse and dependence have become an epidemic in the United States. Although these are commonly encountered exposures, little is known about the demographic characteristics of patients presenting for emergency care for misuse of prescription opioids that prompts medical toxicology consultation. In addition, less is known about the source of these medications. Medical toxicologists have the unique opportunity to interact with these patients during vulnerable moments and are able to obtain valuable information to help understand the misuse epidemic.. Current definitions of prescription drug abuse are inadequate to describe the ongoing epidemic. Abuse, misuse, and nonmedical use ...
People who inject drugs (PWID) often have poor health and lack access to health care. The aim of this study was to examine whether PWID engage in self-treatment through nonmedical prescription opioid use (NMPOU). We describe the prevalence and features of self-reported physical pain and its association with NMPOU. PWID (N = 702) in San Francisco, California (age 18+) were recruited to complete interviewer administered surveys between 2011 and 2013. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was conducted to examine the associations among self-reported pain dimensions (past 24-h average pain, pain interference with functional domains) and NMPOU, controlling for age, sex, psychiatric illness, opioid substitution treatment, homelessness, street heroin use and unmet healthcare needs. Almost half of the sample reported pain, based on self-reported measures in the 24 h before their interview. The most common pain locations were to their back and lower extremities. Past 24-h NMPOU was common (14.7%) and
RESULTS: In 2010, a total of 263.6 million prescriptions were dispensed to the US pediatric population, 7% lower than in 2002, while prescriptions dispensed to the adult population increased 22% during the same time. Washington, DC - The nations emergency physicians are issuing a strong warning to parents about the dangers of prescription drug abuse, which are now the second most abused drugs, after marijuana. Nearly three-quarters of a million people (741,425) needed emergency care in 2006 because of prescription drug abuse.. Often when you hear that someone has overdosed on drugs you think of illegal substances, such as cocaine or heroin, said Dr. Angela Gardner, president of the American College of Emergency Physicians. But parents need to know that many young people are taking prescription drugs from the medicine cabinets. Many of the kids wrongly believe the drugs are not addictive, and they dont realize they can be lethal.. The types of prescription drugs most commonly abused are painkillers, such as OxyContin, and Vicodin. Also, central nervous system depressants (or barbiturates), such as Valium and Xanax, are common. Twelve- to 14-year old girls are more likely than boys to have abused ...
Another sad drug abuse tragedy that is drawing more attention to the prescription drug abuse epidemic in the country. We need to continue to take action against the prescription drug problem. The overdose deaths over the weekend of two teenage brothers who were recent Penn High School graduates provided the latest example of a deadly drug abuse epidemic that has claimed lives across demographics.. Police said the brothers, 19-year-old Nick Savage and 18-year-old Jack Savage, were found dead Sunday morning after overdosing on a combination of drugs and alcohol at a late-night house party in the Knollwood area of Granger. Two other partygoers were treated for overdoses.. Experts said the incident highlighted how the upward trend of prescription drug abuse over the past five years - often associated with painkillers such as Oxycontin - has not spared affluent suburban communities.. Many of the adolescents have been using prescription drugs such as oxycontin, valium and vicodin. Following marijuana, prescription drug abuse is the second leading form of illegal drug use in the country. The findings of the study were recently revealed in the Journal of Adolescent Health.. Prescription drug use is the next big epidemic, explained the study´s lead author Robert Miech, a professor of sociology at CU Denver, in a prepared statement. Everyone in this field has recognized that there is a big increase in the abuse of nonmedical analgesics but our study shows that it is accelerating among todays generation of adolescents.. The latest news reports alleging that multiple prescription drugs have been found in Michael Jacksons house - some unmarked, others with pseudonyms often used by Jackson and one particular medicine- should send a wakeup call to many in the medical profession, especially those doctors working with or friends with the rich and famous.. It reminds me of the so-called medical professionals who prescribed medicines for Anna Nicole Smith and Elvis Presley to mention just a few of the more prominent names.. Prescription drug abuse is a very serious problem with over 8500 deaths due to prescription drug overdose in 2005 alone.. One of the first principles taught to doctors in medical school is First, to do no harm. How does it benefit anyone to be prescribed drugs when there is no real doctor-patient relationship? Keating said after his remarks to about 1,100 clinicians, addiction
Every year, three hundred million prescriptions - about 10 for every man, woman and child - are filled in Canada. Prescription drugs have benefited both the health of Canadians, and the health care system itself; they have meant dramatically improved quality of life for many Canadians, and have saved the country a great deal in hospitalization, social benefits and other expenses. However, it could be questioned whether all of Canadas prescription drug use is appropriate; patients may be receiving too few medications, too many medications or suboptimal medications for their conditions. In addition, prescription drugs carry a price tag of their own. Since 1975, expenditures on prescription medication have risen faster than any other category in the health sector in Canada, and more is now spent on prescription drugs than on physician services. Governments, health care providers, drug manufacturers and the public must constantly strive to ensure that Canadians receive optimal and appropriate ...

And finally, the growth in national spending on prescription drugs is shown ...
DALLAS -- There are many points at which a Y2K breakdown could interfere with the production and delivery of prescriptions drugs, says Bruce Webster, author of The Y2K Survival Guide. Webster, a software engineer and co-chair of the Washington D.C. Year 2000 Group, says of all the potential problems with Y2K, health care concerns him the most.. According to Webster, 80 percent of the raw materials used in prescription drugs come from overseas sources. The rest of the world is farther behind in Y2K compliance than we are, he said.. While big U.S. pharmaceutical companies may be Y2K ready, smaller third-party suppliers may not. He is also concerned about the level of preparation by the Healthcare Finance Administration (HFCA), which processes 1 billion claims per year.. The issue is not will there be a catastrophe but will there be enough problems to cause disruption and delay in people getting their prescription drugs? said Webster. However, he thinks the prescription problem can be more ...

Cancer survivors have higher rates of prescription opioid use but do not have increased rates of prescription opioid misuse compared with those without a history of cancer, according to a study published online Aug. 17 in JAMA Network Open.. Vikram Jairam, M.D., from the Yale University School of Medicine in New Haven, Connecticut, and colleagues conducted a cross-sectional study involving 169,162 respondents to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health from January 2015 to December 2018 to compare the prevalence and likelihood of prescription opioid use and misuse for adult cancer survivors and respondents without cancer.. Of the respondents, 5.2 percent were cancer survivors, with 1.2 and 4.0 percent reporting having more recent and less recent cancer histories, respectively. The researchers found that compared with respondents without cancer, the rates of prescription opioid use were higher for more recent cancer survivors and less recent cancer survivors (54.3 and 39.2 percent, ...

The profile of opioid misuse and opioid use disorder in the United States is changing, in that nonmedical use of prescription opioids has become as significant a problem as the use of heroin.1 Federal data for 2013 indicate that approximately 4.5 million people in the United States reported nonmedical use of prescription pain relievers in the past month and 289,000 reported use of heroin in the past month.2 Despite the dimensions of the problem, nearly 80 percent of people with an opioid use disorder do not receive treatment because of limited treatment capacity, financial obstacles, social bias, and other barriers to care.3. Researchers, federal health agencies, and pharmaceutical manufacturers have focused on developing medications that can be used to expand access to treatment of an opioid use disorder in medical office settings, rather than limiting use to specialized opioid treatment programs (OTPs).4 This effort has yielded two important products that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) ...

OBJECTIVES Disabled, homebound individuals tend to suffer both chronic pain and depression; however, low-income, homebound older adults have been underexposed in pain and depression research. We examined the extent of pain frequency, intensity, and interference; the relationship between pain and depressive symptoms; and prescription analgesic use and its association with use of antidepressant and anxiolytic medications among these older adults. METHOD The data came from the baseline assessment of 215 homebound individuals aged 50+ who were referred to a clinical trial of depression treatment. Bivariate and multivariate analyses were used to examine the research questions. RESULTS Almost 87% (n = 186) of the participants reported having had chronic pain in the preceding three months. Of the pain reporters, the mean frequency, intensity, and interference of pain were 8.65 ± 2.05, 7.71 ± 2.10, and 7.80 ± 2.82, respectively, on a 1-10 scale, and 61% were taking a prescription analgesic. [...] a recent report from a national nonprofit group shows prescription drugs, particularly painkillers, cause more fatal overdoses than heroin and cocaine combined. A report released by the Trust for Americas Health shows that drug overdose deaths jumped 12 percent in Connecticut between 1999 and 2010. Connecticut was also one of 29 states (and Washington, D.C.) where drug overdose deaths exceeded motor vehicle deaths in 2010. About 50 Americans die from prescription painkiller overdoses each day, and the medications are responsible for more than 16,000 deaths and 475,000 emergency department visits a year. Gillespie said there are multiple reasons that prescription drug abuse continues to be a major public health concern. [...] many people who become hooked on prescription drugs start using them for legitimate reasons, said Pamela Mautte, director of the Valley Substance Abuse Action Council in Ansonia. Staff from consumer protection, the state department of public health and other agencies
A Gulfport narcotics officer says prescription drug abuse is quickly becoming an epidemic. A lethal combination of methadone and Xanax killed the young man. He got the drugs prescribed to him, by an out of state doctor. Drug overdose is now the No. 1 cause of unintentional death in the United States. In 2018, over 67,000 people died from drug overdoses. The main driver of these deaths is opioids - including prescription opioids, heroin, and fentanyl and its analogues. People who take prescribed opioids, even as directed, may build up a tolerance. When pain has subsided, some people find it easy to stop taking them and others find it harder to quit. Some people who find it harder to quit may continue to take opioids for longer than necessary, or may develop an opioid use disorder. Over 50% percent of people who have misused prescription opioids reported getting them from friends or relatives. Most people dont even know that sharing opioids is a felony. People who take opioid pain relievers for too long or in doses too large are more at risk of developing an opioid use disorder and more likely to die of drug overdose. The National Survey on Drug Use and Health found that 9.9 million people ages 12 and older ...
Abuse of Prescription Opioids Is a Serious and Growing ProblemWe need only read the news to be reminded that prescription opioid abuse is a serious problem across our society.
There are multiple factors leading to the escalating use of opioids and other controlled substances. This is mostly based on the personal philosophy of the undertreatment of pain and continuous total pain relief at any cost. Many organizations promoting opioid use, guidelines which obviously were developed with substantial bias towards manufacturers and those who support the unlimited use of opioids, accreditation standards, advocacy efforts, legitimization of abuse of prescription drugs, and enormous publicity of pain as a 5th vital sign. Even the model guidelines developed by the Federation of Medical Boards which have been adopted as a bible by multiple licensure boards are seriously flawed and biased.. With regard to the recent announcement of federal government initiatives aimed at preventing prescription drug abuse, I find it somewhat disappointing. They are issuing numbers which we have been talking about for several years including deaths and side effects, etc. They have been embracing ...

The suggestion that broader access to marijuana might reduce prescription opioid misuse and overdose comes largely from two recent reports, Mark Olfson, M.D., M.P.H., of the New York State Psychiatric Institute and Columbia University Medical Center and colleagues wrote in the AJP paper. These studies found aggregate annual death rates from opioid overdoses were lower in states with medical cannabis laws compared with states without such laws. Such ecologic analyses, however, provide no information on whether individual patients who use cannabis have a lower or higher risk of developing opioid use disorders, they noted. ...
