The Tanzanian government recommends women who attend antenatal care (ANC) clinics to accept receiving intermittent preventive treatment against malaria during pregnancy (IPTp) and vouchers for insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) at subsidized prices. Little emphasis has been paid to investigate the ability of pregnant women to access and effectively utilize these services. To describe the experience and perceptions of pregnant women about costs and cost barriers for accessing ANC services with emphasis on IPTp in rural Tanzania. Qualitative data were collected in the districts of Mufindi in Iringa Region and Mkuranga in Coast Region through 1) focus group discussions (FGDs) with pregnant women and mothers to infants and 2) exit-interviews with pregnant women identified at ANC clinics. Data were analyzed manually using qualitative content analysis methodology. FGD participants and interview respondents identified the following key limiting factors for womens use of ANC services: 1) costs in terms of money
A recent illuminating qualitative study by Zulueta and Boulton1 explores the practicalities of informed consent in routine antenatal HIV testing. Its results support what I have argued1 is inevitable with routine testing policies of this kind: that routine antenatal testing regimes are incompatible with requirements for informed consent. It has become clear that intervention could reduce the risk of transmitting HIV from mother to child from 15-20%2 to around 8%,3 or possibly as low as 2%.4,5 The evidence of this possibility produced a general trend towards introducing routine antenatal HIV screening in developed countries worldwide.6,7,8,9,10 The aim was to dramatically reduce the rate of HIV transmission from mother to child by encouraging universal antenatal HIV testing. The UK has been no exception, and in 1999 the government instructed health authorities to implement a policy of offering and recommending an HIV test to all pregnant women.11 ...

For my course project, I have chosen the challenge area of prenatal risk factors with the subtopic of health. Prenatal health is a factor in a childs development and affects their school readiness and their learning. American babies, compared with those from other developed nations, are receiving inadequate prenatal care and less time at home with their parents during the first year of life (Lally, 2010). I am interested in assisting the women in my community receive quality prenatal care so that they have a safe pregnancy and so that their child has the best opportunity to be healthy, happy, and successful. In addition, I believe early childhood education is the foundation to a childs overall education and a mom who has quality prenatal care and has assistance for their childs development and learning from age birth to three, their child will be successful and ready to enter Pre-K or K. It is during the first few years of life that early experience starts shaping the foundational learning ...
Over the past decade, Cambodia has seen a significant decline in its malaria burden. The government has established the goal of eliminating malaria in the country by 2025. With PMI/USAID support, Cambodia is implementing a package of interventions as part of its efforts. This assessment aimed to describe the cost of malaria elimination activities in Sampov Loun Operational District (OD) between July 2015 and March 2018, to describe the cost per malaria case detected under PMI programming, and to estimate the incremental cost-effectiveness of the elimination programme per Plasmodium falciparum (Pf) or P. vivax (Pv)/Pf mixed case averted under the Cambodia Malaria Elimination Programme (CMEP) and the U.S. Presidents Malaria Initiative. Opportunity costs of government workers were also assessed to understand the theoretical cost of sustaining this programme through government efforts alone. We conducted an empirical micro-costing analysis based on elimination activities alone using CMEP internal ...

One of the biggest reason given for the funding of Planned Parenthood is that it provides needed services to low-income women. That if it were not for the abortion giant, many women would not receive the vital cancer screenings and prenatal services they so desperately need.. This has proved to keep many of the wolves at bay. Many in the political realm have backed off or been shouted down by this claim. It is one of the reasons given by women marching in the streets of Washington D.C. this weekend. But are these claims true?. One video shows that it is not true.. Christian News reports. ...

How is it that there are so many wonderful, caring people who yearn to have children and never get that opportunity when I see children every day with parents who are unable to care for them or just dont want to? For instance, there is a little four week old girl I have been taking care of since she was a few days old whose mother was in jail for most of the pregnancy, did not get adequate prenatal care, was taking four different types of narcotics including heroine and came to visit her daughter zero times during her hospital stay. The baby stayed in the hospital for over three weeks because she was withdrawing from narcotics ...

GDM now affects about 17.5% of pregnant women in the Chinese population,28 and the prevalence is also increasing in the global population.12. Early diagnosis of GDM would play an important role in the prevention of short-term and long-term complications that affect both the mothers and their offspring. However, in current clinical practice, the diagnosis of GDM is mainly based on an OGTT between 24 and 28 gestational weeks and therapy typically begins in the third trimester, which may not be early enough for prevention of complications.. Different strategies have been studied for early diagnosis of GDM. We joined a multicentre investigation on the predictive value of FPG for subsequent GDM. The result of the study showed that about two-thirds of pregnant women whose FPG≥6.10 mmol/L at the first prenatal visit would develop GDM, but an OGTT was still recommended at 24-28 gestational weeks.28 Following this study, we found that the FPG level at the first prenatal visit was associated with ...
This is one of the more underrated prenatal vitamins in our opinion, but nonetheless, is one that wed recommend if you are looking for the best prenatal vitamins with folic acid. Now, you may wonder, doesnt all prenatal vitamins come with folic acid since it is such a vital nutrient to pregnant (or trying to get pregnant) women? Yes, most prenatal multivitamins do, but not many provide folic acid in its natural form - the folate (like New Chapters) and Best Nest Prenatal Vitamins is one that does so, but not quite at New Chapters price tag. In fact, Best Nest Prenatal Vitamins content of methyl folate (a natural form of folic acid and 7x more bioavailable) and methylcobalamin (a natural form of B12) is unheard of in a multivitamin. These, together with 25+ other key vitamins are 100% organic blend and is made from whole food. Probiotics are present too to combat any constipation problem.. We also love how it is vegetarian friendly and is free of, fish/shellfish, sugar, preservatives, ...

About two thirds of pregnant women in sub-Saharan Africa attend antenatal clinics at least once during pregnancy, presenting a major opportunity to prevent and treat malaria. The aim is to deliver this package - especially intermittent preventive treatment - to pregnant women as part of their routine antenatal care, using and strengthening the existing antenatal care infrastructure. This strategy is now an integral part of WHOs Making Pregnancy Safer initiative, which aims to strengthen antenatal services and provide preventive measures, treatment, care and counseling to improve all aspects of health in pregnant women and their newborns. ...

Prenatal clinic is a place, where an expectant mother receives maximum care and support during her pregnancy. Every pregnant woman has her own opinion on prenatal care that can meet her needs and exceed her expectations. Of course, everyone wants to hear the doctors words: Everythings going to be fine, Your baby is completely healthy, Your pregnancy is going well. At the same time, every woman wants to be sure that, if she or her unborn child face any problems, her prenatal care provider will be able to detect them in a timely manner, order all necessary tests and examinations, or, if required, refer to the next level of medical care (specialized department of the hospital, perinatal center, etc.). Therefore, the main requirement, when choosing prenatal clinic, should be body-certified specialists and state-of-the-art equipment, which allow a pregnant woman to have all necessary tests and examinations in the healthcare facility ...
This research demonstrates the feasibility of implementing a group prenatal visit program for Japanese women in a family medicine setting. We culturally modified the Centering Pregnancy program based on our previous clinical experience16,17 and research.21 To our knowledge, this is the first-ever application of a group prenatal visit program in Japanese. We firmly believe that sociocultural adaptations to the Centering Pregnancy model were critical. Especially important changes included fewer sessions and changes in the topics covered, for example, dropping the topic of domestic violence and adding newborn care and teaching about differences in pregnancy care between Japan and the United States.21⇓-23 We did not modify the approach to a semiprivate clinical examination in the room, but opinions about this varied: about half expressed concerns about compromised privacy, a primary source of discontent related to them not wanting other participants to overhear conversations.. This study adds to ...
This first paper of the Lancet Series on ending preventable stillbirths reviews progress in essential areas, identified in the 2011 call to action for stillbirth prevention, to inform the integrated post-2015 agenda for maternal and newborn health. Worldwide attention to babies who die in stillbirth is rapidly increasing, from integration within the new Global Strategy for Womens, Childrens and Adolescents Health, to country policies inspired by the Every Newborn Action Plan. Supportive new guidance and metrics including stillbirth as a core health indicator and measure of quality of care are emerging. Prenatal health is a crucial biological foundation to life-long health. A key priority is to integrate action for prenatal health within the continuum of care for maternal and newborn health. Still, specific actions for stillbirths are needed for advocacy, policy formulation, monitoring, and research, including improvement in the dearth of data for effective coverage of proven interventions for ...
HIV can be transmitted to the offspring from an infected pregnant woman. Anyone who suspects herself to be infected with HIV should seek the doctors counselling and receive an HIV antibody test before embarking on pregnancy. Currently, HIV antibody routine screening is adopted in the public antenatal services under the Department of Health and Hospital Authority (the attending pregnant women may however opt not to be tested according to their own will). If any of the expectant mothers are found to be HIV-positive, they will be counselled by the concerned doctors with the support of the nurse counsellor and social worker on issues such as the available treatment options (including those intended for prevention of mother to child transmission of HIV), the potential adverse effects of such treatments, the risk of vertical transmission to the baby, the natural course of HIV infection, the possible psycho-social effect of HIV infection to the woman, the expectant baby and her family.
