Dear Facebook/blog friends, If you recall from a previous blog post, I attended the Whole Person Care Preceptorship because I felt God telling me 2 things: 1) Trust Me. 2) Make decisions that will make you more like Me. Well, the preceptorship has further convinced me that God has really long legs…at least in a…
INFORMATION SUBMITTED BY INDIVIDUAL STUDENTS ON PRECEPTORS FROM PREVIOUS PRECEPTORSHIPS. INTRODUCTION. The following pages have been transcribed from the original hand-written materials submitted by upper classmen (MS2s, MS3s, and MS4s) who bravely ventured out into the real world of clinical practice as pioneers in this program for introducing first year medical students to primary care preceptors in community-based settings. All of the physicians serving as preceptors for this course volunteer their time. The students who took the time to answer our request for more personalized information to give to incoming medical students did so on their own time. Not all of them had the time available to answer our questionnaire so not all of the preceptors who have previously participated are listed in the Preceptor Scrapbook. Also, there are several new preceptors participating this year. Since this may be their first year, we have no history for them.. After the course has ended, you will all be ...

A significant nursing shortage exists in the United States, which is compounded by high turnover rates. Skilled nurse preceptors are needed to train and assimilate nurses, which would improve retention of nurse preceptors, facilitate transition of nurses to the practice environment, and increase the number of preceptors within the organization. A preceptor preparation program in a 300-bed hospital was developed to promote nurse preceptor success while enhancing learning outcomes and creating a supportive work environment. The organizations leaders are interested in the successes of the program and its long-term role in retaining nurse preceptors who completed the preceptor preparation program. Therefore, the purpose of this doctor of nursing practice (DNP) project was to develop a program evaluation model where the institution could assess the retention rate of preceptors and the overall effectiveness of the program. The evaluation framework consisted of the Benners model skill acquisition, from

8) Doctors arent always reliable, and dont necessarily know everything. If a patient rips his chest tube out and is at risk for respiratory distress or a pulmonary embolism or stroke or worse, the doctor on call should get out of his bed and come to the hospital to assess him. Always advocate for patients to get the care they deserve ...

PDF: RobertsJSESpring2013. Abstract: Jack Turner (2005) once wrote we treat the natural world according to our experience of it. How are our students experiencing sustainability in U.S. colleges and universities? With the rise in popularity of education for sustainability initiatives in both K-12 and higher education, experiential education has been championed as a key pedagogical approach moving forward. Experiential curriculum projects come in many different forms. From outdoor education and service learning to so-called hands-on applied work on campus projects and field science research, students are increasingly learning by doing. Yet far from just another methodology to be used in the classroom, the rise of experiential approaches indicates deeper tectonic shifts in higher education. As students and faculty engage in this form of learning, questions are raised as to the historic divide between theory and practice, the separation between so-called town and gown cultures, the ...
A: Industry professionals can help students gain practical experience and a better understanding by getting involved in the educational process. There are a variety of ways to get involved, including hosting students for internships and preceptorships, guest-speaking opportunities for student clubs and courses, providing relevant case examples for student courses, interacting with students at meetings and events, and providing funding for student scholarships or educational programs. Everyone has a stake in the development of the next generation (prevention of foreign-animal disease, integrity of food safety, protecting our export markets, etc), and industry input is absolutely essential.. ...

I could say the same about nursing school. Why are there suddenly nurse residencies and nurse fellowships? Because there is too little clinical time while in school. My nursing school has a name that you would recognize. Our med-surg clinical days were one half-day per week spent at the hospital, about 26 in total over 2 semesters. Peds and maternity, about 5 half-days each. I was lucky because I was on a general medicine unit and got to see a variety of patients. We all complained that our clinical time was inadequate. The preceptorship in the last semester consists of working eight shifts one-to-one with a staff RN. No wonder, then, that hospitals are not confident in the capability of new nurses to practice safely and effectively. ...

I got my first job at Sutter after I passed my RN. I did some leadership hrs at Sutter and asked if I can work for them. The manager really liked me and said sure call me when you are done with RN.. I thought she was being nice and did not mean to really hire me. So, I called her day after I found out that I passed RN with the feeling that I am never going to get her call back.. To my surprise, she called same day and asked if I liked to be interviewed. It was a great surprise for me, I am blessed to have this job in this economy and I always keep my eyes open to recommend other new grads when appropriate. Therefore, keep in mind everything is possible and be positive.. The second job as a case manager was offered to me after my preceptorship at LPCH. Thanks to my family support, my special friends and my wonderful teachers.. ...

I recently received a video made by Dr. Amy Doneen in honor of Womens Heart month and will share my takeaways. I had the great professional pleasure of attending the Bale-Doneen Preceptorship Program and have heard Drs. Bale and Doneen speak on numerous occasions. A sobering statistic is 1/3 of women will die of cardiovascular disease (CVD). One woman will have a heart attack every 25 seconds with someone dying every minute. 64% of women who suddenly die this way had no idea they were suffering from CVD. The death rates for females age 35-44 years has increased by 1.3% every year since … [Read more...] ...
I left KL six hours ago and Ive been missing home since then. Sigh, why? Letting home go has always been so hard eventhough I was back for about a week only. My mom accompanied me at the airport until I entered the departure hall. Kinda glad that she insisted on accompanying me because I told her that she didnt have to take the trouble to follow me all the way to LCCT. Anyway, this summer vacation has been a meaningful one, especially the second half of it. Ive been so busy ever since preceptorship started and even when it ended, I wasnt any less busy! My mom came down the day after my last day of work for a short holiday. We covered quite a number of places such as Chinatown (her favourite!), Bugis, Orchard, Suntec City, Clementi (lol), Merlion Park etc. Could have gone to more places if she stayed longer. But I wanted to go home until my holidays were over. Amidst all that touring, I was also busy rushing my SOAP notes and prescriptions for my report! The morning on the day I left for KL, ...

Obesity is an important public health problem that is taking epidemic proportions worldwide. Indeed, nearly 50% of Canadians are obese and their number has increased dramatically in the last 20 years. Direct costs of obesity added to those of sedentary represent nearly 5% of the health systems budget. Also, obesity is linked with multiple co-morbidities; furthermore, modest weight loss has significant impact on type 2 diabetes, blood pressure and even reduces mortality. The investigators group has implemented an interdisciplinary team that has demonstrated its effectiveness for obesity management. However, the majority of obese subjects should be treated by primary care physicians (PCPs) that often feel uncomfortable when faced with the management of obesity. The investigators have therefore developed a clinical preceptorship for PCPs; this continuing medical education (CME) activity aims at engaging PCPs in obesity/overweight management. The current research proposal is aimed at the ...

One of the most interesting observations to come out of this study was that there also appeared to be a correlation between student perceptions and faculty service-learning training. Students were more likely to agree or strongly agree with survey statements in courses that had instructors trained in effective service-learning pedagogy or instructors who were being mentored by individuals who had been trained. Knowledgeable service-learning practitioners were more likely to incorporate best practices such as having class requirements that included an orientation to the service setting and the nature of service-learning, provide an opportunity for the community based organization to formally assess student work, and formally recognize student contributions. Instructors in the courses in which students were less likely to agree or strongly agree with survey statements had received little or no formal training. These observations are also consistent with Katula and Threnhauser who argue that it is ...

My first week at EBAC flew by fast. On my first day I was given an overview of the pharmacy and the clinic as a whole. My preceptor explain how EBAC developed and how she acquired a position in this specialty. She discussed the patient population and explained how I would not be able to counsel patients until she thought I was ready to handle this patient population. At first I didnt fully comprehend her statement, handle this patient population. We have been counseling in school, internships and our IPPEs - how am I not ready? When I started reading the patients charts I finally understood. Some of the patients have a history of (or currently going through) domestic violence, prostitution, homelessness, and drug addiction. Of course this isnt every patient, but I realized why my preceptor was caution with students counseling.. The entire first week I reviewed patient charts and learned the different classes of HIV medications. I was given a list of 10 patients. My preceptor made sure to ...
