Aside from its size, a larger fish pond has a lot of differences from the usual-sized ponds. The water system itself requires extra care and maintenance. The creatures like the fish and the aquatic plants that dwell in large ponds require even more attention and concern.. Basic fish ponds normally use a biological filter to maintain the cleanness and health of the water feature. However, a usual biological pond filter cannot function well in a large pond due to the volumes of water in the pond. Some the reasons why bio filters do not work in large ponds include the requirement of effective water flow which cannot be ensured in a large pond.. If you are thinking of compacting gravel to sustain the filtration needs of a large pond, think again. This will just trap solid wastes which will decay in time. If this happens, anaerobic bacteria have a higher chance of developing. To make things simple, just search for pond maintenance services near me and hire the best guy you can find.. There are three ...
Tailing ponds are areas of refused mining tailings where the waterborne refuse material is pumped into a pond to allow the sedimentation (meaning separation) of solids from the water. The pond is generally impounded with a dam, and known as tailings impoundments or tailings dams.[1] It was estimated in 2000 that there were about 3,500 active tailings impoundments in the world.[8] The ponded water is of some benefit as it minimizes fine tailings from being transported by wind into populated areas where the toxic chemicals could be potentially hazardous to human health; however, it is also harmful to the environment. Tailing ponds are often somewhat dangerous because they attract wildlife such as waterfowl or caribou as they appear to be a natural pond, but they can be highly toxic and harmful to the health of these animals. Tailings ponds are used to store the waste made from separating minerals from rocks, or the slurry produced from tar sands mining. Tailings are sometimes mixed with other ...

Most sources state that Erasmus Arlington Pond was born in Rutland on January 19, 1872. Alumni surveys filled out in Ponds own hand, however, indicate that he was born on that date in 1873 in East Saugus, Massachusetts, which was also the birthplace of his mother, Ellen Stocker Pond. The Ponds and their four children moved to Rutland by the time Arlie was in grammar school. In later years sportswriters wrote that his father, Abbott Sequard Pond, was a farmer, and that young Arlie learned to pitch by throwing at a spot on a barn door for hours at a time.. While those common clichés about Vermont players were true in the case of Bert Abbey, in Arlie Ponds case they were utterly false. Abbott Pond worked for his brother, Dr. Erasmus Arlington Pond, at the Pond Sphygmograph Company, selling surgical instruments out of offices in the Morse Block in downtown Rutland. Arlie grew up at the corner of Main and Center streets, next door to 114 Main Street, the home of the uncle for whom he was named and ...
The Polymer can be injected directly in hopper dredgers, or used in settlement ponds. instead of using two or three successive settlement ponds, the addition of polymers decreases the settlement time. The overflow is clear after the first pond, saving land area and civil engineering work.. Dewatering of thickened sludge with either geo-textile tubes, centrifuges, belt filter presses or screw presses. Polymers have proved to be very efficient in the dewatering of sludge from municipal and industrial lagoons, ponds, lake clean-out projects, waterways, harbours and ship canals.. Port Construction SNF Canadas proposal is a change from the traditional lagooning process. After many years of natural drying, the soil is heterogeneous. Polymers, on the other hand, give homogenous flocs made of sand and slime, which after only 6 months of drying leave a valuable land. Our process means that less land area is consumed by settling areas and land is usable after 6 months. It is a cost-effective way to sort ...

Another thing you should consider is the filtration system of your pond When water is moving, ie from a small waterfall or fountain, it creates a filtration all of its own due to the action of the flowing water. Your pond filtration depends on the design of your system and the climate of the area in which you live. Although you may not need a filter for your garden pond it is always wise to consult someone who is knowledgeable concerning pond filtration. Many stores that provide supplies for garden ponds stock biological and cartridge filters that you may need and will be suitable for your particular garden pond may also discuss your requirements with the staff in store who should know and will point you in the right direction. As with everything, when you are going to start a new project, you really do need to educate yourself and find out about the essentials and exactly what equipment you will need. This is even more true when you are building a fish pond. You will need to establish whether ...

Ideally put off the work until late autumn as this is when there are least amphibians in the pond to disturb. If urgent work is needed during the spring, adult amphibians can be kept out of the way in a bucket of damp vegetation with a little water (as long as its not for more than a day or two) and then released into a quiet part of the garden or back into the pond afterwards.. If urgent work is needed when there is spawn/tadpoles in the pond - scoop them out and keep them in a bucket of pond water while you do the work and then return them to the pond when youve finished. If you need to hold tadpoles for any length of time ensure there is enough food for them and supplement their diet with boiled lettuce (for young tadpoles) or fish food if necessary.. You might come across adult frogs when doing work on your pond at other times of year. These should be moved to another area of the garden that provides cover from predators and extreme weather (compost heap, log pile, amongst long ...
The Gobler Laboratory has set forth a specific research action plan to gather key missing information to help develop a management plan for Georgica Pond and to better inform the Georgica Pond community. The four main objectives of this plan are as follows:. 1. Evaluation of nutrient sources to Georgica Pond: Excessive loading of nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus is the main factor leading to the suite of environmental problems plaguing Georgica Pond. However, it is unclear whether the majority of nutrients originate in groundwater, streams, run-off or the atmosphere, and if fertilizer or wastewater are the main sources. With data from our proposed field and modeling effort, we can identify the largest sources of nitrogen and phosphorus so that a fact-based, measurable solution can be proposed.. 2. Genetic and toxin analysis of algae in Georgica Pond: The algae in Georgica Pond, stimulated by excessive nutrients, are the primary direct and indirect threat to the health of this ecosystem. ...

Our garden wildlife pond has become, fairly rapidly, full of green slime...horrid wispy (and more solid) trails, like veils under the surface and floating islands. The surface is also covered by bubbles - the bottom of the pond seems to be fermenting! Last year there was masses of oxygenating pond weed in the deeper half but its as if its all died and is decomposing. I know theres a fair amount of sludge at the bottom, and yes, we have at times allowed our ducks to have access, tho its been mostly duck-free for over a year. The shallower half of the pond has a good coverage of pond plants which seem to be fine, albeit with much duckweed amongst the foliage. There are loads of newts. Any ideas, pond-people???
The pond is an artificial pond created for fish breeding. For the construction of ponds it is best to use natural depressions, such as depressions and gullies. It is preferable to find such hollows near rivers, to avoid problems during the flooding of the ponds. Such ponds are called riparian. For the formation of floodplain ponds enough to block the earthworks elevated part of the shore. In front of an earthen embankment will be saved by river, atmospheric, ground water. In such ponds it is good to raise warm-water fish species.. In that case, if a future pond removed from river beds, it can be used other sources of flooding. Key ponds filled by water gushing from the ground up the keys, and brown - due to streams flowing across the land. Key ponds are created by the embankment and the strand by dividing creeks dams. These ponds are well used for the cultivation of Coldwater fish species.. Before you decide definitively on the choice of land where to locate the pond, it is necessary to conduct ...
Additional alternatives and treatments that have been considered include Floc Logs and bio-augmentation with aerobic bacteria and enzymes. The Floc Logs and Pond Logs are a product manufactured by Applied Polymer Systems, Inc. (APS) and utilize anionic polymers to floc out (settle) suspended solids and phosphorus within the water column. However, according to the manufacturer, this product works most effectively when there is flowing water around the logs either with an aerator or other circulating system. Flowing runoff water into the ponds may be sufficient to activate or release the anionic polymers, but high flows may also overwhelm the logs and require regular maintenance and replacement.. Since the product contains a regulated polymer, regulatory approval would be required and the cost of replacement and maintenance must be considered. Manufacturers literature indicates the pond logs can treat 325,000 to 500,000 gallons of water. The smallest of the ponds is West Pond at 1.1 acres with a ...
Bottom based aeration system, or diffused aeration involves the act of pushing air down to the bottom of a pond to allow bubbles to rise to the surface. These units are most efficient for aerating deeper pond and lakes since the bubbles provide most of the work. However, these system can be used in shallower ponds, but they would need to installed evenly throughout the pond, which would in turn cost more. When the bubbles rise, they de-stratify the water eliminating the oxygen poor zone at the bottom and mixing it with the oxygen rich water above. This then creates a healthier water column. These systems also create very little surface agitation ...

I have to say that this years temps, in So Cal, have also been much cooler than usuall. On fish that we purchased last October as 2 year olds, we have seen an average of 3 inch growth. On our koi over 24" this season our average growth so far is right around 1.5 inches. We have been able to add some weight to all of them, but nothing extrodinary. Our ponds have all been in great shape as far as filtration. We had 1 koi bump her mouth and had to give her 2 silver bullets. She is 100% recovered with no visable scaring. Maintenance is very easy. Husband wants to distroy turtle pond and 2000 gallon pond and make one larger pond for koi. Turtles all went to a new home so it looks like he will be starting his new profect this winter... As the temperature of your pond water approaches 42°F, your fish will start looking for food. In cooler temperatures, when the water temperature is between 42° F (6° C) and 72° F (21° C), fish require a high carbohydrate/reduced protein diet. In cooler water, fish metabolism slows and so does the need for protein. Feeding a high protein food in cooler waters will result in poor water quality. In fact, the excess protein is converted to ammonia and excreted by the fish, adding to the pollution of the pond. To prevent this from happening, feed your fish PondCare Spring and Autumn Pond Food, a reduced-protein, high carbohydrate, vitamin-enriched diet, specially formulated to feed pond fish when water temperatures are between 42°F and 70°F.. ...

Push one Pond Flourish Tab™ into the root zone for each pot gallon. For non-potted plants, use one tab for each six inch radius of root zone. Each Tab should feed for about three months. The Tabs will disintegrate slowly and need not be removed as even the residue will continue to provide some nutrients. Re-dose as required to promote desired growth, usually about every 3-4 months. In most ponds, Pond Flourish Tabs™ will not alter pH, but, in very soft and unbuffered water, they may have slightly acidic properties similar to peat moss. Each bottle of 30 Tabs is sufficient to fully treat 30 gallons of potted pond plants.. ...
PVC - Also known as plastic pond liner, this is a watertight material that is also highly durable. PVC pond liners are the most widely used type of pond liners due to their cost, flexibility and ease of installation. Average thickness of a PVC pond liner is 0.5mm and they are the most cost effective kind of pond liner on the market; favored by the casual pond enthusiast. The downside of PVC pond lining is that it lacks UV stability, meaning that the liner has to be completely buried underneath the pond and that any exposure to direct sunlight will cause the PVC lining to start breaking down.. Epalyn - Epalyn pond liners are made from top quality material with a thickness of approximately 0.75mm. In addition to this benefit, Epalyn also offers high UV stability and protection against exposure to sunlight. Epalyn pond liners are also considered fully stable when they come into contact with chemicals and other materials carried in soil. Epalyn is an extremely durable liner that is not affected by ...

Because these insects do not bite they are only a nuisance pest. But they can be a considerable nuisance. They will rest and hide in vegetation and on buildings around their breeding sites. Numbers can be such that as one walks past and disturbs them they lift off and will stick in hair and can be breathed in. This is rather unpleasant as I well know. Kiwicare is within a kilometer of the Christchurch settlement ponds and the building is covered with midges. The shrubs in the car park are also full of hiding insects. Each time I open the boot of my car a cloud of flies is disturbed and I have had to spit one or two out. There is also a carpet of dead ones building up in the car park. If the problem gets much worse I will have to spray the exterior of the building with NO Bugs Super to reduce the numbers. It will not get rid of them all as there is such a rapid turnover of numbers but it will help to make the place more pleasant to work around ...
MLS will suspend veteran Rapids forward Drew Moor two games for his elbow to the face of Los Angeles midfielder Marcelo Sarvas in a game last week, Colorado coach Oscar Pareja said. The league is expected to officially announce the suspension soon.. Moor drew a straight red card in the 50th minute against the Galaxy, and it led to a penalty that L.A.s Mike Magee converted into the game-winner for a 1-0 victory.. "The contact wasnt as hard as I think its been made out to be, but it was a poor decision on my part," Moor said Tuesday after the Rapids trained in the cold in Commerce City.. "The linesman saw it right away. There was no reason to argue.". Moor at the time was wearing the captains arm band for the Rapids, after Pablo Mastroeni left in the 23rd minute. The foul put the Rapids down a man with 10 and Hendry Thomas took over as captain.. "You play in this game long enough, you find yourself in situations you cant explain," Moor said. "Its uncharacteristic of me. Not only am I ...

Stephen, who first took samples in the area in 2009, says the ponds provide a unique research opportunity because there are very few places which house such extreme geochemical variability within such a small area. "Within three days of sampling for my Masters I sampled nine very diverse ponds which youd normally have to travel kilometres for. Because of the extreme environment theyre unique, and because the communities are so simple you can describe them a lot more accurately, and they can then be used as a model for more complex environments.". As well as bacteria the ponds contain archaea, a superficially similar group of microbes which have radically different biochemistry and which often live in extreme environments. Stephen analyses the DNA of his microorganisms using a technique called 454 sequencing, which he says is much faster and provides far more information than previously available methods, and by targeting genes which are unique to one group or the other he can readily ...

Animal matter may exist from dead insects to bird droppings. Make sure to check your pond frequently for anything that has fallen into the water and remove it quickly so it does not overwhelm the pond filter and produce ammonia. Also, if you see a dead frog in your pond, take it out ...
The most influential organisms in a pond are aerobic, requiring a steady supply of oxygen. Besides koi, this includes plant life, and the vast majority of micro-organisms that become established in their own niche. If we supply additional aeration to a pond, besides having a direct beneficial effect on koi health, it will also boost the performance and health of the pond
We just built a pond in our backyard. I want to have plants in it only, but when I purchased plants today and got them home, I wasnt really sure how to place them in the pond. I noticed that there are several different types of plants and I just need to know how many and of what? Thanks so much. Debra ...
