Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) is employed in a wide range of devices based on its excellent mechanical, optical, high thermal, piezoelectric, pyroelectric, and ferroelectric characteristics. In the current investigation, the pristine and neodymium oxide (Nd2O3) nanoparticles embedded polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) thick films were prepared via solution casting method. The Nd2O3 nanoparticles were synthesized via hydrothermal technique. The functional groups were identified in the nanocomposite films via infrared vibrational spectroscopy. It revealed the presence of ferroelectric β-phase in the annealed nanocomposite films. All-important optical constants have been determined for the first time via UV-VIS transmission spectroscopy for the nanocomposite films in the ferroelectric phase.

Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) hollow fibre membranes with asymmetric structures and good hydrophobicity have been prepared by a phase-inversion method and have been applied to removal of ammonia from water. Aqueous solution containing sulfuric acid was used as stripping solution to accelerate the removal of ammonia. A mathematical model was presented to simulate the ammonia removal in PVDF hollow fibre modules. Experimental results indicate that the post-treatment with ethanol is useful to improve both the hydrophobility and the effective surface porosity of the resulting PVDF hollow fibre membranes, and thus favors the ammonia removal. Increasing the pH value of water is capable of promoting the removal of ammonia. The initial concentration of ammonia and the feed velocity of the acid stripping solution have negligible effects on the ammonia removal. In this work an impact sensor was prepared from a sandwiched structure PVDF film, and the related detection circuits were presented. The dependence of the PVDF sensors response on the elasticity of the supporting materials was examined and discussed. Here two response indexes were discussed, which were the peak-to-peak voltage (Vpp) and the recovery time. Firstly, falling impact experiments were executed on desk-supported PVDF sensors (100 mm PVDF film) using free falls of different weights from different heights. Then the same shock experiments were repeated on the same sensor, but changing the backstops to a sponge and rubber, respectively. In this study, Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) hollow fiber hemodialysis membranes were prepared by non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) with compound addtive. The compound additive was made with polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) and Poly ethylene glycol (PEG). The results showed that the modified PVDF membrane had better separation performance than virgin PVDF membrane. The UF flux of modified PVDF membrane can reach 684 L·h−1·m−2 and lysozyme (LZM) passage is 72.6% while virgin PVDF membrane is 313 L·h−1·m−2 and 53.2%. At the same time, the biocompatibility of PVDF membranes was also improved. Compared with commercial polysulfone hemodialysis membrane (Fresenius F60S membrane), the modified PVDF membrane had better mechanical and separation performance. The stress and tensile elongation of modified PVDF membrane was 0.94 MPa and 352% while Fresenius F60S membrane was 0.79 MPa and 59%. Preferably, the modified EVOH comprises structures IV, V, and VI: wherein x is an integer greater than or equal to 1, y is an integer greater than or equal to 1, z is an integer greater than or equal to 1, and R comprises a cycloalkenyl group. The modified EVOH is useful in oxygen barrier applications, such as a forming an oxygen barrier layer of a packaging article. Also disclosed are methods of modifying ethylene vinyl alcohol polymers, and using the modified EVOH to make packaging articles with a superior barrier to entry by atmospheric oxygen.

Ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) is in widespread use as a polymeric biomaterial with diverse applications such as intravitreal devices, catheters, artificial organs, and mouthguards. Many biomaterials are inherently prone to bacterial colonization, as the human body is host to a vast array of microbes. This can lead to infection at the biomaterials site of implantation or application. In this study, EVA was coated with chlorhexidine (CHX) hexametaphosphate (HMP) nanoparticles (NPs) precipitated using two different reagent concentrations: CHX-HMP-5 (5 mM CHX and HMP) and CHX-HMP-0.5 (0.5 mM CHX and HMP). Data gathered using dynamic light scattering, transmission electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy indicated that the NPs were polydisperse, ~40-80 nm in diameter, and aggregated in solution to form clusters of ~140-200 nm and some much larger aggregates of 4-5 µM.
