Three different derivatives of macrocyclic tetraimine Schiffs base have been synthesized and explored as a neutral ionophores for preparing poly(vinyl chloride) based membrane sensors selective to Dy3+. The addition of sodium tetraphenyl borate and various plasticizers, viz., o-NPOE, DBP, DBBP, DOP and CN has been found to substantially improve the performance of the sensors. The best performance was obtained with the sensor no. 1 having membrane of Schiffs base (SL-1) with composition (w/w) SL-1 (4.5%): PVC (30.5%): o-NPOE (59.5%): NaTPB (5.5%). This sensor exhibits Nernstian response with slope 19.4 mV/decade of activity in the concentration range of 10−8 to 1.0×10−2M Dy3+, performs satisfactorily over wide pH range of (2.8-7.2) with a fast response time (10 s). The PVC membrane of an ion-selective electrode (ISE) sensitive to dibasic phosphate ions (HPO4-ISE) has not been optimized for maximum selectivity, sensitivity, and useable ISE lifetime and further work was necessary to improve its performance. Two areas of investigation are reported here: include the parameters for the lipophilicity of the plasticizer compound used and the amount of cyclic polyamine ionophore incorporated in the PVC membrane. Six candidate plasticizers with a range of lipophilicity were evaluated for their effect on the useable lifetime, sensitivity, and selectivity of the ISE against 13 different anions. Selectivity was determined by a modified fixed interferent method, sensitivity was determined without interferents, and the usable lifetime evaluated at the elapsed time where 50% of the HPO4-ISE failed (L50). The results show that choosing a plasticizer that has a lipophilicity similar to the ionophores results in the best selectivity and sensitivity and the longest L50.

In this paper the behavior of the molecularly oriented polyvinyl chloride (PVC-O) pipes during transients is investigated, by means of tests on a PN16 DN110 pipe installed at the Water Engineering Laboratory of the University of Perugia, Italy. Pipe characteristics, such as wave speed and Kelvin-Voigt parameters, are estimated by the comparison of experimental and numerical results. Analyses are performed both in time and frequency domain. The photostability of PVC films (40 μm thickness) in the presence of Schiff bases (0.5 wt %) upon irradiation (300 h) with a UV light (λmax = 365 nm and light intensity = 6.43 × 10−9 ein∙dm−3∙s−1) was examined using various spectroscopic measurements and surface morphology analysis. The changes in various functional groups indices, weight and viscosity average molecular weight of PVC films were monitored against irradiation time. The additives used showed photostability for PVC films, with Schiff base 1 being the most effective additive upon irradiation, followed by 2 and 3.
