Several methods for auricular cartilage engineering use tissue engineering techniques. However, an ideal method for engineering auricular cartilage has not been reported. To address this issue, we developed a strategy to engineer auricular cartilage using silk fibroin (SF) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogel. We constructed different hydrogels with various ratios of SF and PVA by using salt leaching, silicone mold casting, and freeze-thawing methods. We characterized each of the hydrogels in terms of the swelling ratio, tensile strength, pore size, thermal properties, morphologies, and chemical properties. Based on the cell viability results, we found a blended hydrogel composed of 50% PVA and 50% SF (P50/S50) to be the best hydrogel among the fabricated hydrogels. Electrospinning technique was used to fabricate polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-based magnetic biodegradable nanofibers. PVA solution was mixed with ferrofluid or magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) powder and formed two individual nanofibrous membranes (PVA/ferrofluid and PVA/MNPs powder) by electrospinning. The surface morphology of the nanofibrous membrane was characterized by scanning electron microscopy and the magnetic properties were measured by vibrating sample magnetometer. In this study, poly(vinyl alcohol) nanofibres were produced and evaluated for wound dressing applications. However, the solubility of the poly(vinyl alcohol) matrix in the aqueous medium generally limits its applications. To overcome this problem, 1,2,3,4 butanetetracarboxylic acid (BTCA) and citric acid (CA) were used as crosslinking agents. Successful bead-free nanofibres were produced, and they both preserved their fibrous structure after water treatment. The mean fibre diameters of polycarboxylic acid crosslinked nanofibres were lower compared to pure PVA nanofibres. Although the morphology of BTCA and CA crosslinked nanofibres was similar, the swelling degree of PVA/CA was found to be higher. Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/Ag-zeolite nanocomposite hydrogels were prepared by UV irradiation using PVA solution mixed with Ag-zeolite nanoparticles. Physical properties and changes in morphology of the PVA/Ag-zeolite hydrogels were investigated. The PVA/Ag-zeolite hydrogels were prepared at a PVA concentration of 9 wt% with a UV irradiation distance of 15 cm, where gel fraction and swelling ratio were optimized. The nopal cactus (Opuntia ficus-indica) releases a substance through its mucilage, which comes from the degradation of pectic substances and chlorophyll. Combined in a polyvinyl alcohol matrix, this substance can be used as a recording medium. The resulting extract material has excellent photosensitizer properties, is easy to handle, has a low cost, and low toxicity. This material has the property of self-developing, and it can be used in holographic applications. The polyvinyl alcohol and extract from the nopal cactus was deposited by a gravity technique on a glass substrate, which dried to form a photosensitive emulsion. We show experimental results on a holographic grating using this material, written by a He-Cd laser (442 nm). Here we communicate our experimental results on the synthesis of silver nanoparticles in solution and thin films using silver nitrate and poly vinyl alcohol (PVA) mixture at different concentrations and different laser irradiations. Detailed studies were carried out by varying pulse width, wavelength, exposure time, and energy of the laser. Formation of nanoparticles was confirmed through color change from transparent to yellow. Irradiated solutions and thin films at different concentrations showed plasmon peak in the absorption spectra. Formation of different sized nanoparticles at different energies with peak shift is observed. Transmission electron microscope (TEM) results confirmed the formation of nanoparticles with size of the particles varying from 2 to 200 nm. The MP2 and DFT/B3LYP methods at 6-311++G(d,p) and aug-cc-pdz basis sets have been used to probe the origin of relative stability preference for eclipsed acetaldehyde over its bisected counterpart. A relative energy stability range of 1.02 to 1.20 kcal/mol, in favor of the eclipsed conformer, was found and discussed. An NBO study at these chemistry levels complemented these findings and assigned the eclipsed acetaldehyde preference mainly to the vicinal antiperiplanar hyperconjugative interactions. The tautomeric interconversion between the more stable eclipsed acetaldehyde and vinyl alcohol has been achieved through a four-membered ring transition state (TS). The obtained barrier heights and relative stabilities of eclipsed acetaldehyde and the two conformers of vinyl alchol at these model chemistries have been estimated and discussed.
Ethylene-(vinyl alcohol) (EVOH)/organo-modified montmorillonite clay (OMMT) composites were prepared using commercial OMMTs with two different organo-modifiers. The first one has polar groups, which interact with EVOH chains, whereas the second one is non-polar. Composites with a high weight percentage of OMMT were prepared bymelt-extrusion in a twin-screw extruder. An apparent increase in the PVA crystallinity with a concomitant change in its main crystalline phase and a reduction in the crystalline domain size were observed in the SWNT/PVA composite nanofibers, indicating the occurrence of a SWNT-induced nucleation crystallization of the PVA phase. Both the pure PVA and SWNT/PVA composite nanofibers were subjected to the following post-electrospinning treatments: (i) soaking in methanol to increase the PVA crystallinity, and (ii) cross-linking with glutaric dialdehyde to control the PVA morphology. The goal of this study was to explore the effects of spray-drying on w/o/w double emulsions of methyltestosterone (MT) loaded in a stearic acid matrix. MT-loaded nanoparticles were formulated by a water-in-oil-in-water emulsion technique using 50, 75, and 100 mg of stearic acid, 2% and 3% w/v polyvinyl alcohol, 5% w/v lactose, and 0.2% w/v chitosan. The emulsions were immediately spray-dried based on an optimized model of inlet temperature and pump rate, and characterized for optimized responses with regard to particle size, polydispersity index, and zeta potential, for both emulsion and powder samples. Dynamic light scattering analysis shown that the nanoparticles increased in size with increasing concentrations of polyvinyl alcohol and stearic acid. Acoustic and mechanical properties of different compositions of polyvinyl chloride/ground tyre rubber were tested in order to determine their suitability for applications fulfilling industry requirements. Sound absorption has been analyzed, showing interesting results at frequencies higher than 2500¿Hz. Spray deposition technique for microneedle fabrication had been investigated as a potential way to fabricate polymer microneedles under mild processing conditions. The spray process generates fine droplets from a bulk solution with the assistance of pressurized gas. Water-soluble polymers, including polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), have been used for microneedle fabrication. A PVA microneedle encapsulating FITC-BSA at the tip portion was formed by spraying BSA-PVA aqueous solution into a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) mold and showed reliable insertion into pig cadaver skin. The PVA microneedles were dissolved within 5 min after insertion and released FITC-BSA in the skin. An easily prepared, chemically sensitive substrate for the detection of soluble micron-sized atmospheric sulfate and certain other water-soluble particles, with a light microscope, was developed. The substrate is made from an aqueous solution of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), barium chloride, glycerol, and Triton X-100 which is spread on a glass slide and dried. Particles are collected on the slide and then observed under a dark field or phase contrast optical microscope. Under humid conditions, barium chloride reacts with sulfate particles to form PVA-insoluble barium sulfate. This precipitates in a Liesegang ring, while nonsulfate water-soluble components dissolve into the PVA medium. Photomicrography before and after moisture treatment reveals the sulfate and soluble constituents of the particulate sample. The method can be employed to detect sulfate particles as small as 0.3 microns. The number of soluble particles and percent sulfate composition per particle in aerosol samples can be estimated.

Pin-bearing test is an important tool to evaluate the ability of the material to retain fasteners and the ability of the material to sustain load during the service life. The present paper evaluates the effect of variation of FA and IM on the pin bearing strength, tensile strength, modulus elongation at break and impact strength. Scanning electron microtopography indicates that the impact modifier forms a co-continuous phase at 10% of IM in PVC. Increase in void content decreases impact strength and tensile strength. As void content increases moisture absorption also increases. The results of pin bearing tests were analogous to tensile test and correlate well. SCN~- selective electodes were developed based on polyvinyl chloride-diphenylthiocarbazone cupper(Ⅰ) (PVC-DTZ-Cu(Ⅰ)) and PVC-DTZ-Cu(Ⅱ). The selectivity order was: SCN~-》ClO_4~- Sal~- 》NO_3~- ~ Cl~- PO_$~(-3) SO_4~(2-)。 At 16℃, the linear response of the electrodes, the composition of its membrane of PVC-DTZ-Cu(Ⅱ): PVC: o-nitrophenylocty ether(o-NPOE) was 12: 22: 66, was 10~(-2) to 5 ×10~(-6) mol/L thiocyanate with the slope of 58± 2 mV/dec at 0.02 mol/L hydrochloride acid solution.The detection limit was 2×10~(-6) mol/L. The sensors, the compostion of its membrane was 8: 22:55:15 (PVC-DTZ-Cu(Ⅱ ): PVC: o-NPOE: lipophilic salt potassium tetraphenyl borate), showned the linear response was in the range of concentrion of 10~(-2) to 2× 10~(-6) mol/L SCN~- with a slope of 54±1 mV/dec SCN~-, in 0. 1 mol/L sodium acetate-0.1 mol/L acetic acid buffer solution.
